In today’s Gospel Jesus reassures us that “the Father in heaven” knows
“how to give good gifts” to His children. Jesus teaches us that we can dare to call
God our Father and ask Him for “our daily bread.” Sometimes we think that the
food we eat is already “ours” because we earned it with our own hard work using
our own intelligence. But in reality even our strength and our intelligence comes
from God. We must be humble and “pray gratefully.” We have a Father who
provides for our every need. We also have “Mother Church” who gives us Jesus in
the Sacraments and provides for our spiritual lives.
People forget that the Catholic Church is a loving mother who has great
concern for her children and for their rights. Many of our teachings show how
much value we place on children, for example: the teachings against abortion,
contraception and in-vitro fertilization. We believe that children are always a
blessing and that the marriage act should have a procreative meaning which must
never be attacked, blocked or poisoned with contraception.
Children not only have the right to life, but they also have the right to be
born naturally as part of a family with a father and a mother united in holy
matrimony. The church thinks of the children’s rights. Infertility is terribly sad
and a couple may feel that they have a “right” to have a baby. But this does not
justify producing a baby in a test tube. Every baby has the right to jabber from his
crib: “I am the fruit of a love act between my mother and my father.” It is because
of her concern for the rights of her children that Mother Church opposes both invitro fertilization and same-sex marriage. Adults must not selfishly ignore the
rights of children and of potential children. It is a sin to produce a child though invitro fertilization with the intention of raising that child in an incomplete family
without both a mother and a father.
In today’s first reading the Lord condemns the cities of Sodom and
Gomorrah. The Lord’s displeasure is not only with the sins of sodomy and lust, but
also with the selfishness that causes adults to seek their own pleasures without
concern for the rights of the little ones.

Religious Education
St. Alphonsus Ligouri, Priest and Doctor… Pray for us!
By Michael Webster, Director of Religious Education
During this Year of Faith, we are taking time on this bulletin page to reflect upon
the lives of the saints, particularly the early fathers and doctors of the Church.
During these summer months, we celebrate some of the lives of these great saints
such as St. Justin, St. Anthony, St. Bonaventure, St. Peter Chrysologus, St. Bernard
and St. Augustine. The one I would like to highlight in this article is St.
Alphonsus Ligouri, whose feast day is this week, August 1.
St. Alphonsus was born in 1696 close to Naples, Italy. At the age of 16 he went to
law school, but in 1723 he decided to abandon his legal career and pursue the
priesthood. In 1726 he was ordained a priest and first went to work with the
homeless youth of Naples. In November of 1732 he found the Congregation of the
Most Holy Redeemer, also know as the Redemptorists. This religious community
is one of the largest in the Catholic Church and they minister to people in 77
countries world-wide. He wrote a great number of works on spirituality,
morality, and theology. He died in 1787 and was canonized in 1839 by Pope Gregory XVI.
St. Alphonsus Ligouri & Stewardship
Taken from his homily: Eighth Sunday after Pentecost (www.catholicharboroffaithandmorals.com)
Beloved Christians, of all the goods of nature, of fortune, and of grace, which we have received from God, we
are not the masters, neither can we dispose of them as we please; we are but the administrators of them; and
therefore we should employ them according to the will of God, who is our Lord. Hence, at the hour of death,
we must render a strict account of them to Jesus Christ, our Judge. For we must all be manifested before the
judgment seat of Christ, that every one may receive the proper things of the body as he hath done, whether it
be good or evil (2 Cor. v. 10). This is the precise meaning of that "give an account of thy stewardship," in the
Gospel of this day. "You are not," says St. Bonaventure, in his comment on these words, "a master, but a
steward over the things committed to you; and therefore you are to render an account of them." I will place
before your eyes today the rigor of this judgment, which shall be passed on each of us on the last day of our
life. Let us consider the terror of the soul, first, when it shall be presented to the judge; secondly, when it shall
be examined; and thirdly, when it shall be condemned.
JOHN PAUL II LECTURE SERIES — TODAY
Everyone is invited to this month’s lecture
that will take place in the John Paul II
building, room 7 at 2pm. Mrs. Kathryn Casey
will speak on “The Self, the Family and
Society: Through the Lens of Gaudium et Spes.”
Refreshments will be provided.
BIBLE STUDY ON THE GOSPEL OF JOHN
Everyone is invited to this bible study on the
Gospel of John led by Gary Nelson. We will meet
tomorrow, Monday July 29, 7pm in the John Paul II
building in room 4 (All Saints Room). There is no
cost to this bible study, bring your own bible and a
friend.
CATECHISTS NEEDED FOR 2013-2014 YEAR
The main reasons people say that they can’t be a
catechist are: I am too intimidated, I can’t teach children
about the faith, I don’t know enough!
And to that we say: Great! You can learn about the
Catholic faith, too! God might be calling you, especially
during this Year of Faith to take a leap of faith and
become a catechist! It is in giving that we receive, so
come receive the joy of children learning about the love
God has for them. Call Debbie Greco at 551-4973 ext.
205 or email her at [email protected]. Pray about it!
 RCIA 
Inquiry classes are for people who want
to learn more about Catholicism, but
aren’t necessarily sure they want to
become Catholic. The RCIA process is
also for Catholics who have not yet
completed their sacraments of
Confirmation or Holy Communion. To
start the process: call John and Nichole
Sablan 581-8477 to make an
appointment.

Did you know?
Join us each month in the
church for a night of music,
prayer, and worship. All are
welcome! Our next session
will be held this Friday,
August 2, from 8-9pm.
It might seem too early to
think about, but this retreat

it! Permission slips are
available in the youth office
and parish office. The cost is
$100 for a weekend at the
beach while growing and
learning more about our faith,

Last Tuesday at 8 a.m.
daily Mass there were

Angelica Vallejo
Angelica is a true gift to St.
Joseph’s youth ministry
department. She first got
involved and joined the CORE
team back in 2008 and has served
off and on since then, and been
part of the WYD group. Even
when she lived in Sacramento for
a couple of years, finishing
school, she would still give her
time and attention to St. Joseph’s
youth group helping out at
retreats and special events when
she could.
Angelica has a quiet strength
about her and a deep love for
Christ and the Catholic faith. She
is so open to share stories about
Christ in her life with teens in our
program and young adults she
works with. She is a great
listener and is very prayerful in
her advice or answers to teens,
making them feel very
comfortable. She served with
NET ministries, receiving a lot of
training in youth ministry, but
also has support and guidance
from her family. Her father,
Deacon Phil Vallejo, her mother,
her siblings and in-laws are all
very involved in the church and
serve where they can.
Thank you, Angelica, for being a
faithful steward in our parish.

From our Holy Father in Brazil
APOSTOLIC JOURNEY TO RIO DE JANEIRO
ON THE OCCASION OF THE XXVIII WORLD YOUTH DAY
WELCOME CEREMONY ADDRESS OF POPE FRANCIS
Monday, 22 July 2013
Madam President, Distinguished Authorities, Brethren and Friends!
In his loving providence, God willed that the first international trip of my
pontificate should take me back to my beloved Latin America, specifically to
Brazil, a country proud of its links to the
Apostolic See and of its deep sentiments of
faith and friendship that have always kept it
united in a special way to the Successor of
Peter. I am grateful for this divine benevolence.
I have learned that, to gain access to the
Brazilian people, it is necessary to pass through its great heart; so let me
knock gently at this door. I ask permission to come in and spend this week
with you. I have neither silver nor gold, but I bring with me the most precious
thing given to me: Jesus Christ! I have come in his name, to feed the flame of
fraternal love that burns in every heart; and I wish my greeting to reach one
and all: The peace of Christ be with you!
... Christ has confidence in young people and entrusts them with the very
future of his mission, “Go and make disciples”. Go beyond the confines of
what is humanly possible and create a world of brothers and sisters! And
young people have confidence in Christ: they are not afraid to risk for him the
only life they have, because they know they will not be disappointed.
As I begin my visit to Brazil, I am well aware that, in addressing young
people, I am also speaking to their families, their local and national church
communities, the societies they come from, and the men and women upon
whom this new generation largely depends.
Here it is common for parents to say, “Our children are the apple of our eyes”.
... applying to young people an image drawn from our eyes, which are the
window through which light enters into us, granting us the miracle of sight!
What would become of us if we didn’t look after our eyes? How could we
move forward? I hope that, during this week, each one of us will ask ourselves
this thought-provoking question.
Listen! Young people are the window through which the future enters the
world. They are the window, and so they present us with great challenges.
Our generation will show that it can rise to the promise found in each young
person when we know how to give them space. This means that we have to
create the material and spiritual conditions for their full development; to give
them a solid basis on which to build their lives; to guarantee their safety and
their education to be everything they can be; to pass on to them lasting values
that make life worth living; to give them a transcendent horizon for their
thirst for authentic happiness and their creativity for the good; to give them
the legacy of a world worthy of human life; and to awaken in them their
greatest potential as builders of their own destiny, sharing responsibility for
the future of everyone. If we can do all this, we anticipate today the future
that enters the world through the window of the young. The arms of the Pope
now spread to embrace all of Brazil in its human, cultural and religious
complexity and richness. From the Amazon Basin to the pampas, from the dry
regions to the Pantanal, from the villages to the great cities, no one is
excluded from the Pope’s affection. In two days’ time, God willing, I will
remember all of you before Our Lady of Aparecida, invoking her maternal
protection on your homes and families. But for now I give all of you my
blessing. Thank you for your welcome!

podemos osar decirle a Dios: “Padre Nuestro” y pedirle “nuestro pan
nuestro trabajo y nuestra inteligencia.

CORRESPONSABILIDAD (STEWARDSHIP)
Por el Ministerio Juvenil
VIAJE APOSTÓLICO A RÍO DE JANEIRO
CON OCASIÓN DE LA XXVIII JORNADA MUNDIAL
DE LA JUVENTUD
CEREMONIA DE BIENVENIDA DISCURSO
DEL SANTO PADRE FRANCISCO
Lunes 22 de julio de 2013
Señora Presidente, Distinguidas Autoridades, Hermanos y amigos,
desarrollo; darle una base sólida sobre la que pueda construir su vida;
garantizarle seguridad y educación para que llegue a ser lo que puede ser;
Angelica Vallejo
Angelica es gran regalo para el
departamento de Ministerio Juvenil
de St. Joseph’s. Ella comenzó
siendo parte del equipo de CORE en
el 2008 y ha servido de vez en
cuando desde esa fecha, lo mismo
que en el grupo de la Jornada
Mundial Juvenil JMJ.
Hasta cuando vivía en Sacramento
por un par de años, terminando sus
estudios, todavía dedicaba su tiempo
y atención a ayudar con retiros y
eventos especiales cada que podía.
Angelica tiene una fuerza silenciosa
y un gran amor por Cristo y por la fe
Católica. Siempre está dispuesta a
compartir historias sobre Cristo en
su vida con los adolescentes de
nuestro programa y los adultos
jóvenes con quienes trabaja.
Ella escucha y con oración da
consejos o responde las preguntas
de los adolescentes, haciéndolos
sentir cómodos. Ella ha servido en
el ministerio de NET, y ha recibido
bastante entrenamiento sobre el
ministerio juvenil, y también ha
recibido apoyo y dirección de su
familia. Su papá, el Diacono Phil
Vallejo, y su mamá, hermanos y
cuñados se encuentran muy
involucrados en la Iglesia y sirven
donde pueden.
Gracias, Angelica por ser una fiel
corresponsal con tu parroquia.
