Dear Colleagues
No words of praise are too great
for the excellent performances of
the NACAC athletes at the recently concluded World Athletics
Championships in Berlin. I was
not totally surprised at the showing as our athletes demonstrated
at earlier regional events that they
would peak in Berlin.
However, the performances that
caught my attention were:
(a) Ryan Braithwaite (BAR)
- 110m Hurdles
(b) Daniel Bailey (ANT)
- 100m
(c) Javier Coulson (PUR)
- 400m Hurdles
(d) Josanne Lucas (TRI)

(g) Shara Proctor (AIA)
- Long Jump
All the above performed, in some
instances, beyond expectations, a
clear indication that talent
abounds in every country, it is up
to those of us who occupy leadership positions to ensure that we
have programmes that will
encourage athletes to participate
in the sport of Track and Field

BERLIN'S TIME TO BE STRUCK BY LIGHTENING! /
ES TIEMPO QUE EL RELAMPA GO RESPLANDEZCA EN BERLIN
Jamaica's
running sensation, 23-year-old
Usain Bolt, smashed his Beijing 200M world
record of 19.30, which he set a year ago,
when he scorched the Berlin tracks with a blistering 19.19.
But first, lets go back to the 100M. Bolt started
off his Berlin exploits by running a mind-boggling 9.58 seconds. Leaving his competitors in
his dust once again the 6ft 5inch Jamaican
joked and clowned around at the start,
scorched the field in the middle in 9.58
secs, did his now familiar chestslapping antics at the finish. To
say that Usain ran and
charmed his way into the
hearts of the hundreds of
thousands of track and field
fans watching the 12th IAAF
Championships in Track and
Field in Berlin Germany
would be to understate the
impact of this young man
on the sport.
Donning his new orangecoloured Puma spikes,
Bolt decimated the outstanding field (only Chambers spoiled the
NACAC party) comprised of Britton Dwain
Chambers, his training partner Antiguan
Daniel Bailey, Trinidadians Marc Burns and
Richard Thompson, Jamaican and former
world record holder Asafa Powell and
Americans Tyson Gay and Darvis Patton.
The highly talented
Tyson Gay, thought
by many to be Bolt's
greatest threat, had
to settle for 2nd
place (in a US
national record) time
of 9.71, with Bolt's
compatriot Powell
running his season
best 9.84secs completing the top three
spots.
norteamericanos Tyson Gay y Darvis Patton.

Historic performances for BVI Women at CAC Championships in Cuba
By Dean Greenaway
Outstanding British Virgin Islands (BVI) sprinter Tahesia Harrigan led
her country's historic performances at the 22nd Central American and
Caribbean (CAC) Track & Field Championships at the Pan American Stadium in
Havana, Cuba July 3-5, 2009.
Since the BVI's first participated in these Championships in 1975, this was the largest
team representing that country - the team was comprised of seven women and 2 men.
The BVI won their first gold medal when Tahesia Harrigan won the 100m in a time of
11.21seconds; Trinidad and Tobago's Semoy Hackett edged Puerto Rico's Carol
Rodriguez for second place besting her 11.38 with a time of 11.35.
By the end of the competition, BVI athletes had walked off with two national record performances and a World Jr. Championships qualifier. The team placed 14th overall
among the 24 teams in competition and 10th in the medal standing of the 20 teams that
scored.
Ms Harrigan-who has a season's best of 11.15 - easily won her heat in 11.43 seconds,
and was the 2005 silver medalist. Her medal is the territory's sixth and first gold in the
CAC Championships and comes exactly 30 years after the BVI won its first medal in
1979..
The quartet of Samantha John, Chantel Malone, Ashley Kelly and Dominique Maloneythe first women's relay team to represent the BVI in a senior championships - debuted

y competitiva. El joven Ryan Braithwaite de
Barbados, Terrence Trammell y David
