Dear sportsmen,
sportswomen, and billiard fans.

Two years ago, in
Brandenburg
on
the Havel, a new
era began in the
over 50-year history of the
Confédération Européenne
de Billard (CEB): For the first
time, the men and women
from all Carom disciplines,
and all ages, met in the „Steel
Palace“ for a common European Championship. The
great success of this new
form of European Championship, has shown that the
European
championship
concept implemented in Famagusta (Cyprus) at the CEBcongress in 2011, is valid and
sustainable.
After the successful premiere, the second edition of this
major international event in
billiards is set for April, 24th
to May, 3rd 2015. For many
months, head organizer, Helga Blawid, has been working
diligently with her team, on
the preparation for the European Championship. As
always, for the Brandenburg
billiard enthusiasts, it is not
only about providing optimal
competition conditions and
fair decisions, for the European elite players, on their
way to winning the coveted
title. As we know, a success-

ful Championship always requires the appropriate organization and conditions. The
Federal Garden Show, which
is being held this year in our
city, as well as in four additional locations in the region,
offers ideal possibilities. Our
guests, from near and far,
have not only the opportunity to experience billiards at
the highest level. They will
also feel welcome in a colourful and thriving city with
hospitable and open-minded
people, and an international
flair.

River. Nearly 500 players will
compete, under the watchful
eyes of international referees, for titles and medals in
all disciplines. Not only in
match billiard play, but also
on the „small tables“. I wish
you all the best of luck, and
hope that you are able to
reach your goals and objectives.
An event of such grand
proportions, can only be organized with close partnership, and support, from the
city and valued sponsors.
Brandenburg on the Havel,
has once again demonstrated that it is truly a „sports
friendly“ city with much to

Mayor of Brandenburg, Dr.
Dietlind Tiemann, who has
supported this event with
great personal commitment,
as well as Mr. Gunter Baaske
(SPD), Brandenburg‘s Minister of Education, Youth and

With Gabriels Biljarts tables,
Simonis cloth, and Aramith
Billiard balls, this year‘s
competitors will have the
best conditions, allowing
for maximum performance.
We would like to thank our
sports partners for their
generous support, and especially the Mittelbrandenburgische
Sparkasse,

well. Without their help, the
championship would not be
possible.
The Stahlpalast in the Axxon
Hotel provides an outstanding tournament location,
with an unforgettable atmosphere.
Kozoom will be live streaming all the action on the
20 billiard tables, around the
world - so the excitement in
Brandenburg on the Havel,
can be experienced anywhere on the globe. The Touch
magazine team will be responsible for spreading the
word via print media.
More than 100 referees and
personal, from several European nations, will ensure
a fair and enjoyable tournament for all. I would also
like to thank all of you, for
volunteering your expertise
and integrity.
I‘m looking forward to seeing
all of our supporters, guests,
and spectators in Brandenburg. Together, we will experience 10 days of excitement,
titles, and the best performances from the diverse

18 titles in ten days
On April, 24th 2015, the Lord Mayor of the city of Brandenburg on the Havel, Dr. Dietlind Tiemann, as proud
supporter and patron, presents this year‘s European
Billiards Championship, of the Continental Association
of the Confédération Européenne de Billard (CEB).

Just two years ago,
the „Steel Palace“
was the venue for
the title competitions, and this year
it was decided by the German organizing committee,
with the CEB-president Wolfgang Rittmann, that the city
on the river Havel will host
this prestigious event once
again. „The many large billiard events which have already taken place in Brandenburg, inspired us two years
ago, to hold our finals here.
Our expectations concerning
the infrastructure as well as
the nearby hotel have been
exceeded - so it makes perfect sense, in 2015, to return
back here,“ said Rittmann.
After the premiere billiard
competitions, held all under
one roof, was such a great
commercial success two
years ago, the European
carom-ec 2015
Association is staying with
this proven model. So now
around 500 players, from all
member federations, will be
meeting from April, 24th to
May, 3rd to compete for 18
different titles, to decide the
new leaders in European
billiards men, women and
youth categories.
For Rittmann the youth
involvement is especially
important, „because young
players are the future of our
sport.“
In the spotlight, with almost
30.000 Euros in prize money,
is the men‘s Three Cushion
competition. The best of the
best will be on hand this year
- defending champion Marco
Zanetti from Italy, Frederic
Caudron (Belgium) as well
as previous champion Torbjorn Blomdahl from Sweden,
have all registered to compete. The German particicarom-ec 2015
pants will also want to prove
themselves, with 2013 European champion runner-up
Christian Rudolph (Bottrop)
hoping to secure a spot in
the winner’s circle. BergischGladbach’s Martin Horn also
deserves a serious look.
Most recently he impressed
the billiard community by
placing second in his class,
at the Lausanne Masters.
Many enthusiasts in Germany have discovered
the game with the 5 small
cones in the middle of the
table, which must be knocked by a carom. This popular billiard variation is
gaining traction especially
in Italy, both as individual
and team competition. It‘s
anyone‘s guess as to who
will win the gold this year,
but Germany is sending a
very capable group of players. The Azzurri were defea-

How to play carom-billiards
Also called French billiards, carom billiard is played at competitive
tournaments on both smaller tables (2.10 meters x 1.05 meters) as well
as on the large 10-foot Match billiard tables (2.84 meters x 1.42 meters).

Basically, in all
carom-disciplines an athlete
plays the whole
match with the
white (yellow) cue ball. A
properly point is made by
touching the other two balls
(carom). Varying per discipline, on the way to the last carom, various tasks have to be
fulfilled. It applies not only to
make the point, but also to

control the balls in a way to
have an easy following position, and to leave a difficult
situation for the opponent.
Depending on the discipline,
the matches are played to a
particular distance with or
without limitation of takes,
or in a set-system. Except
for Three Cushion and Artistique, the other disciplines
are also called “classic” or
“serial” disciplines, because
series of one hundred or
more points are not uncommon.
Partie Libre:
This is the basic version of
carom billiards. On the table
there is a white, yellow, and
red ball. The object of the
game is to hit both balls with
your cue ball (white or yellow). It does not matter if the
contact is made directly, or

off one or more rails. When
you hit both balls, it is called
a carom, and the player receives one point.
The best strategy is, of
course, to try to keep the
three balls as close together
with minimal movement, in
order to be able to score a
high number of points. Since
it is much easier to make a
point when the 3 balls are
resting together in a corner,
there are only a limited number of points available in the
corners.
One Cushion and
Three Cushion
Here, the cue ball has to
hit at least on cushion before the carom with the third
ball. When this contact takes
place does not matter. In

5 Pin is a specific variant
of carom billiards, which is
mainly based in southern Eu27

the World Association UMB
carries out an Individual’s
World Championship. In Europe, the CEB organizes an
Individual’s European Championship every two years
and a National Teams Championship each year.
Since 1990, 5 Pin attracts
more and more applicants in
Germany, who fight in individual and team competitions
for federal and state titles.
By far the most successful
nation in 5 Pin is Italy. There, the National Association
has built a competitive sports
system over the last ten years. The pre-requisite for scoring points is quite simple:

of mother-of-pearl (1 red
and 4 white) placed in the
middle of the table. As with
the other disciplines the one
player uses the white ball
as cue ball, the other player
uses yellow.
In conjunction with the red
ball, also located on the table, not only do successful
caroms bring points, but
knocking down the pins
score the most points. These
must be indirect, meaning
that the pin is knocked over
only after contacting a ball
from the opponent. The red
ball may never be played
first, and you may not knock
over the pin with your own
game ball - otherwise the op-

the other variations of billiards, in 5 pin, the player does
not continue shooting until
he misses a shot - instead the
players alternate shooting.
It is important, of course, if
the left situation is an offensive or defensive position.
The interested viewer already knows this from snooker
TV broadcasts.
The
goal is to achieve the defined
score.
Even if this game sounds
complicated, every viewer
will easily be able to judge
and acknowledge the individual shots after a short time
of watching.
