THE CONSTRUCTION OF FUTURE SCENARIOS (FS) AS A CONTRIBUTION TO A CREATIVE EDUCATION, GLOBAL AND SUSTAINABLE Felipe Kong ([email protected]) / Mercè Junyent ([email protected]) Children are not the future of human community; adults are. We are the future of our children because they will be “shape” according to what they live with us. The future is in our present (Maturana, 2006) SUMMARY Meanings and definitions of the concept of future are very diverse; in point of fact, it is used in astrology as well as in finance. However, we are not concerned about the myriad of uses and definitions of the term. What we are really concerned about are the social representations that are build upon the concept, taking into account that nowadays people have labeled and manipulated the concept of future as they pleased, even to the point of conveying a pessimistic view of what is to come. Now, we would like to share a research that seeks to validate the construction of future scenarios (FT) as a tool for educational and methodological contribution to the field of education. Below, there is an exercise of FT carried out by children from a school in Barcelona. The questions considered for this investigation are related to the children’s representations of the future and the interactions that can be distinguished as coming from geography (space/scales). Also, this research seeks to explore how future scenarios created by children can contribute to the design of an educational proposal utilizable in different contexts of education. In order to carry out this research, we have placed ourselves in the interpretative paradigm of the educational investigation under a qualitative approach. The techniques and tools used are oral and written narrations, obtained through audio recordings and letters, respectively. About the usefulness of narration, we can assert that it is a form of representation of reality. It also works as a tool for elucidating our thoughts and allows us to subtly create and imagine fictitious and real scenarios at the same time. The main actors of this investigation are 45 6th grade children –aged ten and eleven- from a private school in Barcelona. ANALYSIS AND RESULTS In order to find some clues about the common words or concepts used by children, their letters were transcribed verbatim with the objective of establishing categories for a subsequent analysis and interpretation of results. The dimensions designed and used in this investigation represented the grouping of meanings and trends written and described by children. These dimensions allowed us to establish three groups of interest: The dimensions that emerged from the narratives are: TECHNOLOGICAL, SOCIO-FAMILY and ENVIRONMENTAL. Each dimension was given a definition in order to be related to the units of meanings described in the children’s narratives. Where are we heading? In this research, we have opened a window through which one can regard the concept of future as a new tool of innovative contribution when talking about or working in education. This approach allows us to project a different and optimistic way of seeing the world, a new world under an educational point of view where the incorporation of the educational teaching and learning of geography will let us use such relations in the classroom and encourage critical and reflexive thinking, which will lead students to work in the present in order to modify and shape the future. We are seeking to explore how sustainable education, global education and creative education, the three of them together, can facilitate the construction of positive future scenarios that will modify the way people act and the way they see the world or vice versa.
