Free Annual Wellness visit and preventive
services made available for Medicare
beneficiaries as part of Health Reform Law
January 2, 2011: U.S. Sen.
Sherrod Brown (D-OH)—as
part of his statewide tour—
announced at a press conference today at the Monroe
Street United Methodist
Church in Toledo that Ohio
seniors receiving Medicare
can now receive free preventive health screenings with
no
co-payments
or
deductibles.
As part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care
Act (PPACA) – the new health
reform law –Medicare beneficiaries will also receive free
annual wellness check-ups
and 50 percent discounts on
brand-name drugs and
biologics in the Medicare
prescription drug coverage
gap, also known as the “donut hole.”
“I have heard from so many
Ohio seniors struggling with
rising health care and prescription drug costs – seniors
who are cutting pills in half,
or skipping doses altogether,
because prices are simply
unaffordable. Ohio seniors
shouldn’t have to worry about
how they’re going to afford
doctor visits on top of prescription drug costs, and this
bill works to ensure that they
don’t have to,” Brown said.
“These new Medicare benefits will remove financial barriers to care and enable Ohio
seniors enrolled in Medicare
to receive free annual wellness
checkups and preventive
screenings, and this new law
will help alleviate the expensive costs seniors must endure
when they enter the ‘donut
hole.’
While the majority of
PPACA will not take effect
until 2014, according to the
Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services (CMS),
approximately 1.8 million
Ohio seniors will be eligible in
2011 for free preventive services and free annual wellness
check-ups as a result of the
new health reform law.
Below are some of the preventive services that will be
free for Medicare beneficiaries beginning Jan 2011:
• Screening for colorectal
cancer in adults, beginning at
age 50 years and continuing
until age 75 years;
• Osteoporosis screening for
women aged 65 and older; &
• Mammography screening for women every 1-2 years
for women aged 40 and older.
Nearly 100,000 Ohio seniors entered the “donut
hole”—a gap in prescription
drug coverage in the Medicare Part D program—last year.
In 2010, seniors who entered
the “donut hole” received
$250 rebate checks to assist
with the prescription drug
costs.
Beginning in Jan 2011, the
new health care law will provide Medicare beneficiaries
with 50 percent discounts on
brand-name drugs and
biologics in the “donut hole.”
Discounts will increase every
year until 2020, when the “donut hole” will be closed altogether.

Paper Tiger for the DREAM Act
Op Ed by David G. Arredondo, January 3, 2011, Lorain, Ohio
Ever since the Democraticcontrolled Senate failed to
vote on the DREAM Act December 18, 2010, thus ensuring its failure, there has been
no shortage of vitriolic criticism aimed at Ohio Senator
George Voinovich and other
Republican members of Congress for failing to pass the
Dream Act.
For the record, 38 Democratic representatives, including four Ohio Democrats,
voted against it, In the Senate,
five Democrats voted against
cloture. Latino advocates of
amnesty and illegal immigration need to take an honest
look at who is to blame for the
demise of the Dream Act and
Comprehensive Immigration
Reform.
From 2007 to 2010 when
the Democrats controlled
both houses of Congress, they
never saw fit to bring the
DREAM Act to a vote until
this current Lame Duck session. During the 111th Congress, neither House nor Senate, both overwhelmingly
controlled by Democrats, held
one committee hearing on the
DREAM Act. Zero! ¡Nada!
They never sought Republican input or amendments to
the bill.
Although the DREAM Act
vote came in the Lame Duck
session of congress after the
November election, I find it
interesting to see which Democrats actually voted against it
even though they had nothing to lose. These would be:
John Boccieri, Zack Space,
and Charlie Wilson, Ohio
Democrats who lost their seats
and who had nothing to lose
by voting “Yes.” The same

crat Bart Stupak who also
voted “No” and who won’t
return.
Locally, Hispanic voters
need to get an answer from
Toledo/Lorain congresswoman Marcy Kaptur who
also voted “No” on the
DREAM Act.
Why did CIR and the
DREAM Act fail this year?
The number one reason was
Democratic, not Republican
opposition which was to be
expected. While President
Obama was not opposed to
passage of this legislation, it
was not a priority either by
giving it mere lip service during his State of the Union
speech last year.
And that’s the message he
gave to the so-called Hispanic
leadership and media—
”you’re free to push it but I’m
not going to carry your water.” That same message was
well taken by Congress, especially the 255 House Democrats who were up for election
this year. With 255 votes in
the House, 59 in the Senate,
and a President who would
have signed the bill, what was
the problem?
The problem was THE
DEMOCRATS. Wake up
Latino leader, the problem is
not the Republicans the problem then and now are the
DEMOCRATS. Yep, the same
ones who keep disrespecting
you while you continue to
put all your eggs in their basket.
There is no such thing as a
monolithic “Latino Vote.” No
leader, group, or organization
can deliver any significant
number of Latino voters one
way or another. Latinos tend
to vote Democratic due to the
nature of their socio-economic status, education, place
of residence, and values. As
recently as 2004, Republican
George Bush received 40% of
the Latino vote.
In 2008, Barack Obama
earned 68 percent of the Latino
vote. Republicans could
adopt CIR as an issue and
David Arredondo
they STILL WOULD NOT
GET an appreciable percentage of the Latino vote.
Republicans continue to
be demonized by Latino leadership and media as being antiimmigrant when the fact is
that Republicans are anti-ILLEGAL immigrant and favor
enforcement of existing laws
such as penalizing those employers who hire illegal workers.
It is unlikely that liberal
Comprehensive Immigration
Reform (CIR) will be introduced in the Republican-led
Congress over the next two
years. What is more likely is
that individual states will introduce legislation like
Arizona’s which is designed
to enforce current federal immigration laws, regardless of
the ethnicity of the violator.
The DREAM Act was a
flawed piece of partisan legislation that failed to pass due
to Democratic negligence and
indifference. The recent vote
was an exercise in political
theater designed to cast Democrats as heroes versus Republicans as villains to the Latino
electorate.
This is all the more reason
for both parties to work at
replacing the currently broken immigration system with
one that attracts the best and
the brightest, not your tired
and poor.

exceeded the goal of 5,000
students. Other than registering by the deadline of

requirements for its scholarships are that students
attend a Detroit Public

scholarships to all 75,000
DPS students. The scholarships are for tuition at any
Michigan public college or
university, and are valid for
up to 10 years from high
school graduation. The
amount of the scholarship
for graduating seniors is announced each spring, based
on funds raised privately.Dr. Nat Pernick, Executive

TMA acquires Fred Wilson’s Iago’s Mirror
in black Murano glass
Jan. 1, 2011: The Toledo Museum of Art has
purchased the dramatic
work in glass entitled
Iago’s Mirror by artist
Fred Wilson. The large,
ornate work in black
Murano glass has been
installed in Gallery 5 of
the Glass Pavilion ®.
“Fred Wilson is an important artist whose work
crosses boundaries between the glass world and
contemporary art,” said
TMA Director Brian
Kennedy. “One of the
Museum’s goals is to acquire works of art of singular merit by distinguished living artists.
Iago’s Mirror is a perfect
fit within our comprehensive glass collection.”
Wilson was born in the
Bronx, New York in 1954.
He received a BFA from
SUNY/Purchase where he
was the only African American student in his program.
A conceptual artist with a
focus on social justice, he
returns, with this object, to
a common thread within his
work: a meditation on
themes in Shakespeare’s
Othello.
Iago is the jealous vil-
lain of the story who sets
about destroying his
“friend” Othello, a black
man, through the deliberate sowing of jealousy and
suspicion that his wife is
unfaithful. When Iago
looks in the mirror, all he
sees is blackness—in this
case, the blackness of his
own soul.
Wilson was introduced
to glass as a medium in
2001 during a residency
at the Pilchuck Glass
School. In 2009 he worked
with Berengo Studios in
Venice, Italy to develop a
process for layering mirrors together while preserving the intricate details of a traditional 18thcentury Murano mirror. To
create the dark reflection
cast by Iago’s Mirror, the
back side is colored black
rather than silver. Black
glass is the most difficult
to create and always has a
colored hue, here a deep
purple.
While he has always
been interested in big concepts, Wilson remains fascinated by the way beauty
functions in art and society. This accounts for
some of the strong appeal

of glass as a medium for
his work. He has said of
the piece, “I like the fact
that it is beautiful yet not
comforting.”
“Iago’s Mirror ties in
beautifully with the
Museum’s glass collection,” said Jutta Page, curator of glass and decorative arts. “Glass mirrors are
an important aspect of
luxury glass production
since the Renaissance,
and Venetian mirrors especially—which had to be
imported and were precarious to ship due to their
size—were and still are
the epitome of such
luxury home furnishings.”

HOROSCOPE
ARIES: MARCH 21 - APRIL 20
If you’re really over this, why does it keep you awake
at night? Denying old hurts and pretending life couldn’t
be better isn’t fooling anyone but you. Coming to terms
with yourself will involve getting real.
TAURUS: APRIL 21 - MAY 20
The formality of things and the importance of showing
up well in public has tied your spirit to a whole new ball
game. This isn’t you, but it’s obviously up to you to find
a way to bring yourself to the situation.
GEMINI: MAY 21 - JUNE 20
This cage you’ve created will start to feel too small
sooner than you think. You’ve traded your freedom for
security without realizing that when you bind yourself to
someone else’s expectations you lose it all.
CANCER: JUNE 21 - JULY 20
Life gets easier when we disengage from toxic situations and people. Your decision to cut out all the dead
wood has changed things completely. Now that you’re
out of the woods, where do you want to go from here?
LEO: JULY 21 - AUGUST 20
You can’t get beyond this until you clear up the past.
Moving on will involve telling those you love that
you’ve just about had it. Don’t let their needs and expectations override your desire to grow and evolve.
VIRGO: AUGUST 21 - SEPTEMBER 20
Your spirit knows what you need but your ego doesn’t
want to hear it. It’s too bad because this could be a tough
lesson. You’re about to find out that it doesn’t serve you
to keep trying to be something that you’re not.
LIBRA: SEPTEMBER 21 - OCTOBER 20
You can keep smiling about things but you’re having
a hard time with this. Its times like these that that make us
wish we could tell it like it is. Feel free to ahead and speak
up; it’ll quell all of your doubts and fears.
Columbia Gas of Ohio begins
meter readings
Columbia Gas has announced the next phase of
the Automated Meter Reading (AMR) system, as
monthly meter readings
commenced on January 3,
2011 across the Northwest
Ohio Operating area, virtually eliminating the need to
calculate customers’ gas consumption every other month.
The Northwest Ohio service area includes the communities of: Toledo, Sylvania,
Holland, Maumee, Perrysburg, Rossford, Oregon,
Northwood, Walbridge,
Millbury, Curtice, Clay
Center, Genoa, Elmore, and
Woodville.
Approximately 180,000
natural gas meters across
the Northwest Ohio Operating area have been upgraded with new AMR devices. The installation took
approximately 18 months
to complete and reflects a
$9 million investment in
Northwest Ohio.
The AMR system uses
radio technology to automatically read the
meter from a vehicle. As

AQUARIUS: JANUARY 21 - FEBRUARY 20
Helping others dig themselves out of a hole is risky
business. There’s always the danger of getting dragged
down right along with them. You can keep this up only if
you know for sure that you can handle it.
PISCES: FEBRUARY 21 - MARCH 20

sends a signal to the
AMR, which in turn transmits the meter reading
data to a computer in the
vehicle. The AMR is
powered by its own longlife battery and does not
draw from a home’s electrical system.
Columbia Gas is implementing the AMR system,
with monthly meter readings, statewide. Currently
the company is on pace to
have all 1.4 million meters
in their service territory
complete within fiveyears.
The AMRs are part of a

of our Doing More for You

SAGITTARIUS: NOVEMBER 21 - DECEMBER 20
You haven’t got the energy for this. It’s OK to accept
the fact that you can’t handle it. Take a break and figure
out how to delegate half of what you’re doing so you can
focus on the things that actually matter to you.
CAPRICORN: DECEMBER 21 - JANUARY 20
When the truth has been hidden for this long, telling
it is ten times harder. Too bad you waited. Now that you
have no other choice, it’s time to figure out what’ll you’ll
do when others go ballistic over this.

Start the New Year off right:
Donate blood!
By resolving to donate
blood or platelets in the
coming year, you can help
save the lives of the one out
of 10 hospital patients who
need blood for emergency
or ongoing medical care.
Your frequent donations
through the American Red
Cross can help keep the
nation’s blood supply
strong and ensure that
blood is available anywhere and anytime it’s
needed.
“A resolution to donate
blood in the New Year
works on so many levels,”
said Kathy Smith, Collections Director for the Western Lake Erie Region of the
American Red Cross. “Your
donation can make a difference to hospital patients,
their family and friends,
and the larger community.
Your act of giving, too, can
make you feel good about
helping to save the day.”
According to
i t s
press release, when you
donate through the Red
Cross, you’ll join about 4
million blood donors nationwide in a lifesaving
cause. Blood is used for the
treatment of cancer patients, people with blood
disorders, premature infants, transplant recipients,
trauma victims and more.
And while most of us will
probably know someone
in our lifetime who needs
blood, just 38 percent of
people are eligible to give.
“Blood donors help provide the gift of life for patients with serious medical
needs,” said Smith. “When
you come to give blood,
you’re performing a vital
community service that
only someone like you can
do.”

LEARN THE POWER OF A POSITIVE ATTITUDE AT LCCC’S TRANSITIONS
Attitude is important, especially in your job search.
Studies have confirmed that
attitude is a better predictor
of success than I.Q., education and most other factors.
LCCC’s Transitions will
explore the power of positive thinking at their next
meeting at 7 p.m., Monday,
January 10, 2011 in room
207/208 of the Spitzer Conference Center on the Lorain
County Community College campus.
Popular seminar trainer
and coach Kim Langley
kicks off the New Year with
“The Science of Optimism:
Fostering a ‘Can do Attitude.” Langley, president of
LifeBalance Enterprises,
Inc., will provide a lifechanging guide grounded
in extensive clinical research, and yet so practical
that it is sure to motivate job
seekers.
Langley will share how
to acquire more optimism
and boost mood. She will also
share how you can change your
“interior dialogue,” which can
positively influence everything from professional success, to self-esteem, and the
ability to stick to your goals.
A much sought after
speaker, Langley conducts
more than 100 seminars annually for corporations, health
care organizations, libraries,
schools, agencies and associations. A professional trainer
with more than 20 years of
experience, Langley is also an
adjunct faculty member and
continuing education facilitator for area colleges and universities including Case Western Reserve University, Notre
Dame College, and Cleveland
State University.
Transitions is a free networking group for business
professionals sponsored by
LCCC’s Employment and
Career Services.
Transitions meetings feature short seminars on topics
relevant to a successful job
search, the sharing of job leads
and support, and networking
contacts. The group meets the
second and fourth Monday of
each month from 7-8:30 p.m.
in room 207/208 of LCCC’s
Spitzer Conference Center.
To register for this session
or for more information, call
