Time is Now” – a rally for an immigration reform by Alejandra Herrera T his past Tuesday, April 9, over 100 families gathered at the Casa Michoacán in Pilsen to depart to Washington, DC, to participate in the “Time is Now” rally on April 10. On that day thousands of community, labor and immigrant rights supporters and immigrant families converged on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, urging Congress to pass common sense immigration reform in 2013 that includes a clear and direct path to citizenship for the nation’s 11 million undocumented immigrants. “This moment is critical because they are defining the last details. We hope that in the last hour the bill many have promised us since January will come forth. They have been chuckling it around but in reality the end product is still to be seen,” said Artemio Arreola from the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR). The “Time is Now” rally, hosted by local organizations, CASA de Maryland, SEIU 32BJ, and the Alliance for citizenship, supported by prominent local and national organizations, will close a week of events in communities across the country urging immediate action to address the nation’s immigration crisis. “Keep their word,” said Maria Salinas after being asked what she expected from the elected officials in Washington DC. The purpose is for Congress to hear them out. Three busses were parked in front of Casa Michoacán to be filled with over a hundred people ready to demand Congress to pass legislation in favor for an immigration reform. “The organizations themselves and ICIRR through FIRM [funded the trip], some folks had to pay those who were directly impacted,” said Becca Shi, one of the key organizers of the rally. We need a bill now, an inclusive bill that keeps families together. We call upon the White House, the House of Representatives, or other elected officials to put forward their bills. “ - ICIRR retary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, Attorney General Eric Holder and congressional leaders, expressing the need for broad reform of the federal immigration system. “We are writing to convey our support for federal immigration reform that improves our immigration system, keeps our communities safe and protects our borders,” stated the letter. “We need a bill now, an inclusive bill that keeps families together. We call upon the White House, the House of Representatives, or other elected officials to put forward their bills. ICIRR, along with our national partner, the Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM), will continue to organize and lift up the voices of families impacted by our unjust immigration laws until an inclusive bill is put forward,” said ICIRR. According to ICIRR 1,100 families are separated each day. The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights is a statewide coalition of more than 130 organizations dedicated to promoting the rights of immigrants and refugees to full and equal participation in the civic, cultural, social, and political life of our diverse society. n Many held posters that said, “We love our families,” “Don’t break up our families,” and “We support immigration reform.” “I’m really interested for the immigration reform to be passed simply because there are so many children without their parents,” said Nieves Vega, one of the protestors. ¿Cómo sabemos si estamos en riesgo cardio- Healthy sex decreases the risk of a heart attack by Nikoleta Morales Managing Editor A prominent cardiologist, educator, researcher, and lecturer, Dr. Juan José Rivera is the director of cardiovascular prevention for Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach. He practiced in association with Dr. Arthur Agatston, creator of the world-famous South Beach Diet, focusing on the prevention and early detection of cardiovascular disease. Prior to joining Univision as the chief medical correspondent, he was the chief medical correspondent for the Telemundo Network and an online contributor to NBC News. EXTRA: What foods are best to eat to keep a healthy heart? Dr. Rivera: We shouldn’t be eating red meat more than once a week. We should concentrate on chicken, fish and turkey. They have Omega 3 – the good fat. We want to stay away from the saturated fat, fried food. People that want to prevent cardiovascular problems, instead of eating white rice, and white bread, should concentrate on whole wheat products, they have more fiber and control the blood sugar. It is very important to eat four to five servings of vegetables and fruits every day. Every diary product should be low-fat. What are some of the ways to prevent cardiovascular diseases? We know that the longer you spend time sitting down, the higher your risk of a heart attack. The American Heart Association recommends [walking] three to four miles a day. Another risk is a high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, stress, and anxiety. What happens is when you have someone with plaque and they live a stressful life, stress hormones are elevated and that inflammation goes up and that causes the plaque to rapture vascular? In general there needs to be a philosophical change, in other words, going to the doctor and taking care of yourself; we have to shift that mentality to preventative mentality. We need to start taking care of our bodies every day, be very active and maintain an ideal weight. We should sleep seven to eight hours a night. We have to be more relaxed, whether we do that through exercise, mediation, yoga or sex [safe sex obviously]. Healthy sex decrease cardiovascular risk. Quit smoking! How do you know you are at a cardiovascular risk? What are the early signs? I do a lot of cardiovascular prevention in practice. In 50 percent of the instances [heart attack] is without a sign. [You need] cardiovascular prevention evaluation. I measure the size of the cholesterol particles. I measure the inflammatory markers, the level of inflammation in your body. I also measure some genes that have been associated with cardiovascular risk (with blood samples). I start by assessing the advanced metabolic signs – blood pressure, blood sugar. It makes sense to check for plaques before they start to build. For men 40 years or older, I recommend a heart scan. A limited scan in the heart, which lasts five minutes, allows me to see if that person has developed a plaque in his coronary arteries and how much, and I create a prevention plan. It is important to note that heart test should be taken once every five years. What are the most common cardiovascular diseases? The three main problems that we are facing in our [Latino] community: obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. It’s all interconnected - if you are obese you are more likely to get diabetes and then more likely to get a heart attack. All of these issues could be targeted in a uniform way, we have to go straight to the problem – how we eat, exercise and our lifestyle in general. No matter what you eat, you have to be very used to reading nutritional labels – how much mono-saturated fat, how many carbohydrates, is there a trans fat, so the first thing - read the nutritional label. There are no magic pills and no magic foods; it is a combination of how you eat and exercise. Your 2012 tax return and health care Compiled by EXTRA Newspaper The Affordable Care Act [health care reform] is the biggest change to the federal tax code in the past 20 years and impacts almost every taxpayer, but many are unaware of its implications. H&R Block provides its clients with a free personalized review of how the health care law would directly impact them. A survey conducted by the Tax Institute at H&R Block found that three out of four taxpayers do not know the guidelines for health insurance eligibility under the new law. In addition, 45 percent of Hispanic respondents were not aware of a possible tax penalty, if they do not have health insurance. The law, which was passed two years ago and upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court last summer, mandates that most individuals have health insurance by 2014 or pay a penalty via their tax return. Those who qualify could be eligible for government assistance to help pay their insurance premium. “There certainly is an intersection of health care and taxes,” said Joanna Castillo, tax professional with H&R Block. “This tax season will be one of historical significance – both in terms of understanding what credits and deductions remain in the new tax laws, as well as how health care reform will impact taxes. This is not the year to go do it alone.” Taxpayers to receive personalized healthcare and tax review According to the Tax Institute at H&R Block, 77 percent of consumers were unaware their 2012 tax return can be used to determine eligibility for health care benefits. Based on information from the tax return, H&R Block will provide information to clients showing if they qualify for a subsidy and how much they can expect to pay out of pocket for the monthly premium. Also, it will detail the possible penalty clients would pay if they do not obtain health insurance. For example: • A family of four earning approximately 90,000 dollars could be eligible for some government assistance paying for health insurance. • A married couple with two minor children and income of 40,000 dollars would owe approximately 170 dollars a month for insurance and be eligible for government assistance. If they choose not to obtain insurance their penalty would be 285 dollars for 2014 and 975 dollars for 2015. New tax consequences also emerge from health care law Beginning with the 2012 tax return, those with health insurance through their employer may notice additional data on their W-2 detailing the cost of their employer-provided insurance. That information is for informational purposes only to help individuals understand the true cost of health insurance, but is not a taxable benefit to employees. Take a test drive through health care reform New for this tax season, H&R Block has launched a website – www.hrblock.com/healthcare. The site is designed to educate consumers on the basics of the law and provide real-life examples of the impact on various taxpayers. This user-driven experience enables the taxpayer to get a sense of the impact of the law through examples of four different taxpayers based on where they live, their family size, income and current health care insurance status. n Insomnia | Teatro Friday, April 12, 2013 :: Extra Newspaper | Leader Post 11 “Cruzar la Cara de la Luna” - la primera ópera mariachi >> Wisin Foto: www. Aún no empezaba yo a trabajar como Remembering Roger Ebert by Kiko Martinez I was only six-years-old when “Siskel and Ebert and The Movies” (later changed simply to “Siskel & Ebert”) made its TV debut on September 20, 1986 under the Buena Vista Television umbrella. By then, Chicago-Sun Times film critic Roger Ebert had been critiquing movies for nearly two decades and in 1975 became the first film critic in history to win the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. During the show’s premiere year, while Ebert was passing judgment on important cinema like “Blue Velvet” and “Platoon,” I was laughing at a dancing animated Pepsi can in “The Golden Child” and crushing on Lea Thompson in “Howard the Duck.” It was a few years later when I truly un- derstood what being a movie critic actually entailed when I discovered “Siskel & Ebert” on TV one weekend. Two men sharing opinions about movies I had never heard of was somehow fascinating to me. Sometimes they agreed with each other. Sometimes they fought like mad dogs. Terms like “film noir” and “cinematography” were from a foreign language. I only knew the basics: “Home Alone” was the funniest thing I had ever seen in my 10 years of life — and that was satisfying enough for me. But every weekend, I would always find my way back to “Siskel & Ebert.” When I read about Ebert’s passing Thursday afternoon, I was genuinely heartbroken. It made me think about when Siskel died in 1999. I hadn’t begun working as a film critic yet (that came the following year), so I don’t crítico de cine (eso llegó el año siguiente), así que no recuerdo si me afectó de la misma forma. But with Ebert, I can say I know some of the joys of his profession that he will never get to experience again and it saddens me. When a film critic is as respected in the industry as Ebert was for the last 50 years, you know he found his true calling; a passion he worked at till the very end. So, thank you, Mr. Ebert, for introducing me to a world I love and a profession in which I can only hope to one day have a fraction of the influence you did. I’ve admired your open-mindedness to the everchanging cinematic landscape, your vast knowledge of film history, and the unflinching manner in which you could defend your opinion. You made me appreciate film in ways few teenagers would and taught me to understand that cinema, whether it’s happiness, anger or wonder, should make you feel something. n 13 14 sports | deportes Arranque rudo de la temporada 2013 para el Fire de Chicago por Gabe Salgado trad.
