Nineteenth Sunday
in Ordinary Time
1883-2016
A Prayer for Faith,
Hope & Love
God of faith,
deepen our faith
so we may bear witness to
Christ in the world;
God of hope,
strengthen our hope
so we may be signposts to
Your transforming presence;
God of love, kindle our love
so that, in a fragile and
divided world, we may be
signs of the faith, hope, love
which we share in Jesus Christ.
Amen

WHAT’S IN YOUR HEART?
The Letter to the Hebrews offers one of the most eloquent definitions of
faith in scripture: ―Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence
of things not seen.‖ It’s true, isn’t it? So much of faith has to do with
believing in the invisible. But there’s more to it. It is also about
―realization‖ and ―evidence‖—things you can perceive. Though faith does
have an unseen, ―not here‖ quality, it’s also very much in the here and now.
Where do you ―see‖ faith today?
WHERE WE LIVE, SERVE,
& WALK TOGETHER IN FAITH.
ST. JOSEPH’S
PAG E TW O
FROM THE PASTOR
My Dear Parish Family,
Thank you so much for all your prayers and well wishes
while I was gone. After helping with a wedding in the
Naples, Italy area, I flew to Uganda via Istanbul. Little
did I realize that there was an attempted coup taking
place. I was able to make my connections and arrived to
Entebbe Airport with no problems. I thank God (and my
guardian angel) for keeping me safe throughout.
Many of you have asked me how my trip was and what
was it like. It is very hard for me to answer in any kind of
complete way, so I usually say it was wonderful or great.
But, that doesn’t do the experience justice. I hope within a
few weeks or so to be able to present a talk and some
slides in reflection of a whole different world I found
while I was away.
In today’s Gospel passage from Luke there is this one
verse that has always resonated with me: ―For where your
treasure is, there also will your heart be.‖ (LK 12:34) This
sentence has always given me pause to ask myself, ―What
do I treasure? What is my treasure? Is that my heart? My
passion?‖ And I think for each of us, we should ask ourselves the same questions. What really matters to me?
What is important? When we ask ourselves these questions, opened to God’s grace and in the light of faith, we
find the guiding answers to living our lives with purpose
and passion.
May God bless you all.
Fr. Scott

ATTENTION ENGAGED COUPLES:
St. Joseph’s/St. Gertrude Wedding Liturgy & Planning Workshop
Are you getting married during 2016 and early 2017 at St. Joseph’s or St. Gertrude
Church? All engaged couples who will be getting married at either church are required to attend a mandatory Wedding Liturgy Planning Workshop prior to finalizing their wedding plans. Our next workshop is being held on Sunday, August 21,
2016 at 2:00pm in the Church. Please note that those couples who are getting
married between September of 2016 through early March 2017 SHOULD attend
this upcoming session to ensure that their preparation process is finalized.
The purpose of the workshop is to review the sacramental requirements for
your upcoming wedding. One of the main focal points of the workshop will revolve around the music selections and musician options available to you through
our growing music ministry. Our goal for the workshop is to review the church/
diocesan procedures & requirements, help you identify the options available,
and finalize some of your music selections for your upcoming wedding.
We look forward to working with you, our special engaged couples, as you get
ready to receive the sacrament of Matrimony. If you have any questions or to
RSVP, please contact us at [email protected].

PAGE SEVEN ST. JOSEPH’S
EXCERPT FROM “MERCY AND TRUTH
SHALL MEET”
BISHOP DAVID M. O’CONNELL, C.M.
The Psalmist proclaims ―mercy and truth shall
meet (Psalm 85: 10).‖ What happens when they
do? Do they recognize one another as coming
from the same source? Do they embrace one another and
work together in search of what is good and right and just?
Or do they cancel one another out, as some suggest, or exist
in some competitive hierarchy where truth is acknowledged
as good but mercy is better, preferable, presumed, even
―more Christian.‖
Mercy and truth are many times presented as an ―either/or
proposition.‖ In the Catholic Church, the same type of argument is often made regarding what the Church asks and requires of Catholics in its law and policy versus what is perceived as ―more pastoral.‖ How can something truly
―pastoral‖ or ―merciful‖ not flow from what we profess and
believe?
The word ―mercy‖ appears as many as 276 times in the Bible,
depending upon what translation is used; the word ―truth‖ is
used almost as many times. In the Gospels, there are numerous accounts of the Lord Jesus – who revealed himself as
―the truth (John 14: 6)‖ – extending mercy to those who
crossed his path. As I reflect upon these accounts and all that
I have tried to share in this pastoral letter, my attention turns
to the Gospel story of the woman caught in the act of adultery
(John 8: 1-11). To me, this narrative best highlights how
―mercy and truth meet.‖

MENSAJE DEL PARROCO
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Estimada Familia Parroquial,
.
.

o pequeño, rico o pobre, sabio o ignorante.
