FUNSEPA was born from the promise that my mother, my siblings and I did, to honor the memory of my father, Sergio Paiz Andrade, following his mission and work. Being here after four years, reporting our achievements is a sign that we have fulfilled that promise and we are following his footsteps. FUNSEPA was conceived with the mission to implement the teachings and vision of country development, of my father, focused on 3 issues that were important not only for him but it goes hand in hand with poverty reduction and are oriented to the most important issues for the society progress: Education, Technology and Country Development. For me education translates to “prepare the next generations for the road ahead” and in an era where technology appears as a condition of development, we must teach our children to use it. So FUNSEPA aims to improve the quality of education in Guatemala, leading our people to the competitive levels needed to advance in the XXI century. humble, but decided to work to pay for his studies. We believe that the results and accomplishments he achieved in his life are the product of hard work and education. We are entering the second decade of the twentyfirst century, technology is essential for much of the current work. That is why digital literacy must become a moral obligation of all the Guatemalans. We understand also, that the quality of education can not be greater than the quality and skills of teachers and principals, which is why we have focused on the training program. We know that this is a difficult task and that the future of our children is in our hands, therefore to do a good job is imperative. But we also know that success is based on partnerships, so we take this opportunity to thank all our partners, donors, volunteers and all those Guatemalans who somehow or other have enabled us to do our work and say today: We’re doing good! Salvador Paiz President The value of education is something that comes from my grandfather, Carlos Paiz, who was orphaned at age 7 and his only brother died at age 11. He had a hard time to obtain access to education that he seek for himself. His origins were 5 6 Welcome Friends...! computers, will also receive training that our team provides in digital initiation. It is an honor to share with you the work we do in the Sergio Paiz Foundation - FUNSEPA. It was a year full of changes and new projects, analysis and proposals that lead us to a synergy of programs. We believe in self-management and community sustainability. For which we have developed a manual to give to schools, which allows them to learn from real success stories, learn and manage their own internal processes that allow them to grow and strengthen the technology project initiated by our support. Before sharing with you the actions we have taken, I want to thank every staff member, for their enthusiasm, commitment and dedication to the tasks they perform. One of the major forces that FUNSEPA undoubtedly counts with is its human resource, and what better time to acknowledge before you the work that each one performs, as they are key throughout the process that we do to promote the development and education in the communities, municipalities and departments of our Guatemala. I am fortunate in having a team that unites a mystique of service and commitment. We all embrace the same mission: to reduce the digital gap in the classrooms of our public schools ..! FUNSEPA recognizes that only equipping computers to the public schools will not managed to decrease the digital gap. Therefore it is considered necessary to connect the equipment of schools with the training of teachers; and with it we will obtain much more in improving education quality. This has been one of the significant achievements of 2010, the synergy between Education Technology and Opening the Future. Beginning 2011, schools that receive the Opening the Future project in 2011 will be our Training and Development Program that will continue ongoing research on new technological processes of learning, developing new technological tools and educational support to the teacher; enabling each school that we equip and monitoring the progress of teachers in their classrooms. In 2010 we are installed the 10,000th computer and it fulfilled us with great satisfaction. We are also committed to not only continue to expand coverage to more schools but to improve our performance, to offer our educational system better tools to seek the development of our children, the future decision makers of Guatemala. Jessica Hammer Executive Director 7 About Us Sergio Paiz Andrade Foundation Our History Sergio Paiz Foundation - FUNSEPA is a nonprofit organization founded in memory of businessman Sergio Paiz Andrade, who throughout his life used the technology and education as a mean to sustainable development in Central American Region. FUNSEPA since its inception in 2006, has pioneered and innovated actions concerning the inclusion of the technology in education to promote the improvement of educational quality. It began its activities with the implementation of the Technology for Education Program - TPE, which aims to bring technology to elementary public schools. FUNSEPA aims to reduce the digital gap and as a first step it is necessary to promote access of technology in education. FUNSEPA recognizes that the work of technology inclusion in schools is not only to supply the hardware to educational centers, but as well provide training to key players in this development and educational improvement. That is why FUNSEPA 8 leads the implementation of Opening the Future project, which aims to train and strengthen the abilities of teachers of the public sector in the use and application of technology as a tool to boost educational development, with emphasis in priority areas. Mission To contribute to the development of Guatemala by improving education through the use of technology. Vision Be the lead organization, a pioneer and innovator, in the field of education by using technology to influence and better the development of Guatemala. Action Methods 1. Access to Technology. This action ensures the insertion of technology to classrooms, schools and communities through the installation of computer labs, and the training for teachers, school authorities and community members. 2. Sustainability of The Foundation. Ensures that the foundation has sufficient resources to achieve its vision. 3. Positioning and Institutional Development. Ensures that the Foundation has policies, actions and mechanisms that improve the development of the institution, and allows it to achieve recognition in a national and international level. 4. Continuous Innovation. Ensures that the Foundation has updated information, a result of perpetual Monitoring and Evaluation and its processes, in the investigation and research, and upgrade of new technology and educational tools that can achieve quality in the operation. 5. Administration and Human Resources. This action ensures the proper support for the successful implementation of strategic planning from 2011 to 2015. 6. Connectivity. Be the catalyst for the creation of a network that is sustainable and free for schools nationwide. 9 Our Programs Technology for Education - TPE Technology for Education Program was born as a multisectoral alliance with an innovative vision of national change involving the private sector, government, foundations and international organizations. Members of the Alliance - who relied on FUNSEPA the implementation of the Technology for Education project-TPE -, share the same vision: to improve the quality of education of the children in Guatemala and prepare them for the exercise of citizenship in a developed society. To develop TPE, we had the support and advice from Computers for Schools from Colombia, which since its inception have accompanied the process with the support of the Canadian Government through the Fund for the Development of Education in Guatemala (FODE). The overall objective of TPE is to create a selfsustaining program of continuous supply of donated computer equipment, new or used to improve the quality of education and global competitiveness of our Guatemalan children in elementary public schools. To achieve this goal, TPE counts with a Refurbishing center which receives, repairs and renovates used computers for later delivery at no cost to the nation’s public schools. Educational software that has been installed on the computer equipment delivered to schools, has been prepared by the research team of FUNSEPA and been approved by the Ministry of Education. TPE provides the educational and technical 10 support as crucial to ensuring a positive impact on school and community life. After the period of support, ongoing maintenance and sustainability are the responsibility of the School Board and school as well. Opening the Future In 2007 the Ministry of Education launched the project “Opening the Future” (Abriendo Futuro in Spanish), with the goal that public school teachers could acquire their own computers at a low price and with affordable financial plans. Given the success of this project, the Ministry of Education and Microsoft have selected FUNSEPA to be the organization responsible for the training of the teachers in the public sector, of the use and application of technology as a tool to boost the educational development, with emphasis on priority areas. FUNSEPA promotes technology education to all teachers and educational supervisors, with the object to facilitate educational and technological processes in school management, leading the pursuit for continuous professional updating. Opening the Future began the process of training teachers in the course on Digital Initiation, and then on to develop school management and Values Growth courses. This certainly shows the influence and strength of this program, which not only it counts with the preference of the teachers sector, but as well with the confidence of Microsoft and the Ministry of Education, who relied this task on FUNSEPA. It is noteworthy that the trained teachers participate constantly in Opening the Future webpage created for this project, www.funsepa. net and www.funsepa.org /abriendofuturo. Opening the Future not only has the expertise but the ability to develop workshops using technology to promote and develop skills and empowers professional training in education. Basically it has influenced teachers to seek new ways to update their knowledge and their practice for the benefit of their communities, having a similarly influence on children and teenagers, encouraging them to use technology as a means of development and learning. Components As principal axes of the Opening the Future Project were determined the components that enable the development, systematization, participation and integration of virtual communities. a. Training The main task is to train teachers in the public sector in the use and development of digital resources and services available and in integrating them in the teaching and learning processes. 11 training process. b. Visit and Monitoring Follow up is provided to teachers, principals and supervisors that attend training, by visiting schools, through phone calls, text messages, chat and E-Learning webpage with the purpose to provide the necessary advice and encouragement to continue the started c. Projects Using a guide for this purpose is made to ensure if the participants achieve specific objectives for each course. Projects are delivered to the trainer for assessment and feedback. d. Inter-institutional Coordination Opening the Future makes strategic links with the Departmental Offices of Education with the purpose to create this approach that allows a better interaction between FUNSEPA and teachers. e. Development of resources and digital services One of the most important components is to develop digital resources and services to promote the integration of technology in the classroom, based on the basic national curriculum (Currículo Nacional Base) of the Ministry of Education and the priorities set by the Ministry. 12 Opening the Future Courses Opening the Future has implemented Digital Initiation courses, School Management and Values Growth which promote the improvement of educational quality in schools. a. Digital Initiation This course is developed to give educators the basic tools in the use of technology. Through adult education teaching methodology is intended that educators begin to learn and understand the technology. Total: 96 horas Live Distance Technical Support 4 Workshops of 3 hours each one (12 hours) 15 hours weekly as minimum for aplication and material excercise. (60 hours) 3 hours weekly following up on the process of the training by instructor. (24 hours) 13 b. School Management This course allows you to develop coordination relations in the three levels of the management: the classroom, the school and the institution (MINEDUC). This process has achieved a new vision of school management, focusing not only the purely administrative aspects of it, but coming to view it as the management of education. The School Management course is designed to be taught at three levels: • Classroom Management, aimed for teachers • School Management, addressed to school principals • Institutional management, aimed for educational supervisors and management technician coordinators This course has a digital mentor called SEPI, a caterpillar that with the process of self development it becomes a butterfly in the end. Distance Online Technical Support Live Total: 96 horas 4 workshops of 3 hours each one. (12 hours) 30 hours weekly for material application and exercises. (60 hours) 3 hours weekly online where they can access the website at any time and day. (12 hours) 3 hours weekly living support to the training process by the instructor. (12 hours) 14 c. Growing in Values Opening the Future developed and implemented the course Values Growth to support and promote the Culture of Peace and Full Life program that the Ministry of Education launched in September 2010. FUNSEPA developed a pilot plan in the department of Chimaltenango in November. This course aims to strengthen in the Guatemalans the culture of peace, thus contributing to the education of “changing agents” and protagonists of their own development. 15 GuateConnects The access to information is a human right, and in Guatemala less than 0.6% of schools have Internet access. It is for this reason that FunSEPA implemented the project, GuateConnects. GuateConnects is an initiative that seeks to connect the 18,000 public elementary schools in Guatemala with the latest technology, at affordable costs, performing a multi-sectoral alliance that works to achieve this vision with a sustainable Project. GuateConnects also seeks to provide quality content to the students, teachers and their community, in the areas of Information Technology and Communication Technology (ICTs), education, health. Also providing support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), in terms of business administration, especially for the youth, and small business owners, interested in becoming internet service providers and others. This project seeks to achieve the connectivity required to carry out the first project of “Digital Literacy,” of immense importance to the history of Guatemala. 16 Coverage and Results 2010 Technology for Education Equipped schools by department GENRAL RESULTS 2010 19 Equipped Schools 739 Kids with access to technology 258,650 Refurbished computers 10,052 32 63 41 28 27 25 25 43 46 24 27 124 25 45 15 13 15 32 28 19 32 17 Opening the future Trained teachers by gender Women: 15,765 Men: 9,436 63% 37% Trained Teachers Projected vs. Trained Teachers Achieved Achieved Projected 25000 21,171 20000 15000 12,000 10000 5000 0 7,799 3,869 200 Digital Initiation School Management 186 Growing in Values Note: In 2010, Opening the Future gave Digital Iniciation Course in Guatemala, Sacatepéquez, Sololá and Totonicapán, achieving the coverage to all the country. I also believe that to be a teacher one has to keep 22 up with technology because students manage very well the computer and it is good to know how to use it and go in hand by hand with them to know how to guide them. Thanks to FUNSEPA for the opportunity given us to receive this training because we bought the computer and it was urgent to teach us how to use it and what better than by the CDs given to us because there is everything that one needs to know, it is only matter of dedicating time and practice to all activities that are included”. ”It was a dream for us to get to have computers in the school” Luis Emilio Morales, Principal of Escuela Oficial Rural Mixta José Basconcelos, Champerico, Retalhuleu Each school that Technology for Educating – TPE- supports, has great significance not only for its team but for every community that it benefits. For us, in 2010 it was special to equip 7 schools in Retalhuleu, as we saw again the selfmanagement and commitment of the principals of the municipalities Santa Cruz Muluá, El Asintal, Retalhuleu and Champerico. From the moment they knew about the TPE, the school principals organized the community to convey the importance of bringing technology into the schools and the benefits for their children. At first both parents and the community did not believe it was possible to realize this dream, “a better education for children”, but the principals injected the enthusiasm and organized soon to have a Technology and Training Centre at their school . That was how parents organized themselves to build an area to be designated for the computers. Tasks were performed by electricians, carpenters and masons, and which all contributed their time. We were able to witness the drive and perseverance of the communities who worked hard to prepare not only physical space but to get a computer teacher that will support the education of their children. When they were ready, they prepared a party to receive the donation that FUNSEPA provided, 112 computers in total were distributed in seven different schools in the municipalities mentioned above. The whole community celebrated for having reached their goal and see their dream come true. Parents, teachers and children were ready to begin a new path: technology. There were more than 2,000 excited children who received the donation and that from that moment were open to new opportunities. Currently, schools are committed to maintain in good condition its Technology and Training Center and not only for children to use computers, but as well parents learn how to use them. We are pleased and honored to have been part of the development process of these communities. Our commitment to schools in Guatemala grows stronger every day. 23 special thanks to our donors Abelino Pérez ACME Producciones Adriane Engelberg Agencias Way Aldo Bonilla Alexandra Cabané Alfredo Figueroa Alicia de Mayora Alma de Luna Ana Lucía Solórzano Anabella Pilman Andrea de Tejeda Angel Ovando Allied Contact Center & BPO AMANCO APROFAM AVON BACO Banco Agrícola Mercantil Banco Americano Banco Azteca Banco de Occidente Banco G&T Banco Industrial Banco Internacional Banco Mundial Banco Reformador Banrural Barbara Marsicovetere Blue Oil Byron Menéndez Calzado Cobán Cámara de Industria de Guatemala Canales 3 y 7 Canadá Cargill Carmen Alegría 24 Carrillo & Asociados Celina Paiz Central de Radios Citibank CODISA Colegio Americano Colleen Moll CONCYT COPA Airlines Corporación Aceros de Guatemala CPS De Museo Dennis Levi Eco Young & Rubicam Edificio Europlaza Electra El Taller del Stand Empresarios por la Educación Emy Torres Erick González Erick Ruiz Erick Soto ESSO Eugenia Farchi Evelyn Davison Fahonda Familia Yoc Matul Familia Los Fernando Ortiz Fernando Paiz Fondo Unido Francisca Leal Francisco Acevedo Fundación Azteca Fundación Paiz Gabriel Biguria Geraldina Dávila de Bolaños GNC Gonzalo Rodríguez Gregg Koenigsberger Grupo Financiero de Occidente Grupo Los Tres Centroamérica Grupo Santander Grupo Solid Grupo Tecun Grupo Unipharm Guandy Guillermo Ortiz Guillermo Porras Heineman Research Henkel Hotel Radisson INGUAT INTEL Isabel Paiz de Serra Isabel Rodill Isopan Ivon Trejo Jorge Montenegro Joanne Engelberg JPMorgan Juan Carlos Rivera Judy Dent Kellogg`s KOREA Laprin Laura María Velásquez Librería Piedrasanta Luis Guillermo Luvia Gularte de Miranda Macro Print Maersk Maria del Rosario de Moreno María Mercedes de Asturias Marta Regina Minence Martha Muñiz Mayaprint Melanni de Paiz Merck Microsoft Milly Reyes Ministerio de Educación Ministerio de Finanzas Nestlé Nuestro Diario Organización de los Estados Americanos Orlando Palencia Patricia Coronado Paulina Delgado de Paiz Pecos Bill Pepsi Persiluz Pfizer Policolor Pollo Campero Programa de Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo Purina QuickPhoto Raúl Aguilar Ricardo Laparra Regina Cordón Rudy Keller SAT Saúl E.
