PARENT PORTAL INFORMATION
In an effort to stay connected, West Ottawa
Schools is pleased to provide the Infinite Campus Parent Portal communication tool. The Portal
connects parents/guardians to students’ data
online, anytime, from anywhere there is internet
access. Once the Portal is accessed, information
about only their child’s progress can be viewed.
Making this information-rich connection with
parents is a clear way to improve communication
between teachers, parents and students. Access to
the Parent Portal can be gained from home,
work, public library, or anywhere an internet
connection can be established. The Parent Portal
is a free service to our district families.
Please visit our website for more information and
form.

Student leaders from Calling All Colors the Leaders for the 21st Century as well as a group of 6th graders worked diligently to plan 2 exciting
events this past week. The first, UNITY day was in celebration of National Bullying Prevention month. Students and staff were encouraged
to wear orange to show their support of the Make It Orange, Make It
End campaign. Stickers with slogans were distributed in 1st hour so
everyone had the chance to show their support. At lunch students were
invited to get their picture taken and sign our UNITY day banner. The
photos were then turned into videos and shown during homeroom. It
was a remarkable day highlighting the group effort it will take to end
bullying. The 2nd event these student leaders planned was a Mix It Up
at Lunch Day. Students were randomly reassigned to sit at a new table
with new peers. A list of icebreaker questions was provided as well as
a word search and crossword puzzle. The last challenge of the lunch
was a jenga style stick pulling strategy game which led to a lot of laughter as students tried to stay in the game and not knock the tippy tepee
over. The goal of Mix It Up At Lunch Day (which is put on nation
wide) is to get middle school students in particular to branch away from
their cliques and get to know someone new. The cafeteria can be one of
the most brutal places for a new student or a student without a lot of
friends. By helping students break down those walls we are working on
creating a positive climate at Harbor Lights for all students. Congratulations to those students whose hard work really benefited our 900+ students.
HOLIDAY GREETING CARD COMPETITION
I would like to announce the 26th annual Holiday greeting card competition which is open to all West Ottawa students. I invite all
students to share their artistic talent and submit an entry for our holiday greeting card competition.
The drawing selected for first place will be used on the front of our holiday greeting card that will be sent to all West Ottawa employees from the West Ottawa Board of Education.
1.
The original artwork may be done in black and white or color on an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of white paper.
2.
The competition involves the front of the card only.
3.
Each entry must have the student’s name, grade, and school printed on the back in order to be considered.
4.
All entries are due to your school’s office by Tuesday, November 20, 2012.
The artist of the entry selected will be invited to the December Board meeting to receive 25 copies of the card. The artist will also
receive a $50 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble Bookstore.

Thomas K. Martin

“The Jazz Age lives on in this light, romantic spoof
of 1920's musical comedy.” ~ Music Theatre International
A show the entire family will enjoy!
The setting is the French Riviera. Polly, an English heiress attending Mme. Dubonnet's
Finishing School, falls in
love with Tony, a delivery boy. Recalling her father's warning to beware of fortune seekers, she poses as a working girl.
Things get complicated with the unexpected arrival of Polly's parents and Lord and Lady Brockhurst
-- but not to worry, a happy ending is in store for all!
With its catchy tunes, period dances (including the inevitable Charleston) and winning sense of humor, THE
BOY FRIEND is a sparkling, tongue-in-cheek 1920's romp.
