PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I saw this reflection in Daily Reflections for Lent, Not by Bread Alone 2002 published by Liturgical Press and wanted to share it with you.
The water I shall give will become a spring of water
welling up to eternal life. John 4:5-42
Thirst of one kind or another launches all our efforts.
Whether it is a thirst for love, for security, or a deep longing for meaning, human beings are thirsty types.
Thirst led the Samaritan woman to the well.
She comes in the heat of noon, not like the other women of the town who would
have come in the cool morning.
Was it because of shame for her lifestyle?
I imagine that the thirst that led her to Jesus was the same thirst that led her through
all the detours of her past and all the lovers of her life.
She had to recognize that her thirst was never really quenched by them.
This is hard to do.
It’s hard to recognize our deeper thirst, and we can get confused.
I once heard a woman who was a roaring alcoholic in her past say, “I came to realize
that alcohol wasn’t my problem … it was my answer, and what a terribly wrong answer it was!”
Her wrong answer made her thirstier still.
The Samaritan woman allowed Jesus to speak to her deeply and to lay her heart
bare.
She also found that her real thirsts were starting to become quenched.
She went from being an antagonist of Jesus to being his prophet in the town, proclaiming him to the very people she had been avoiding that day at the well.
Questions for Reflection:
Where do we look to meet our deepest thirst?
Do they make you thirstier still?
Third Sunday of Lent
CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES
MARCH 5 AND 6
Next weekend we will have a special collection
for Catholic Relief Services. The
Catholic Relief Services funds six
Catholic agencies that work to
serve our suffering brothers and
sisters around the world.
Through humanitarian aid, resettling displaced
individuals and families, and advocating on behalf of
victims, the Catholic Relief Services collection allows
us to see every encounter with a suffering person as
an opportunity to help Jesus in disguise.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS:
TAIZÉ STYLE
FRIDAY, MARCH 11
7:00 PM
The Taizé Religious Community of Southern
France is well noted for its meditative and reflective music. Often, a short verse or chant is
intoned and sung many times in a meditative
style. This allows the participants a chance to let
music fill the soul and deepen prayer.
The OLPH Music Ministry has combined this
musical style with a reflective version of the Stations of the Cross in a way that is sure to enrich
your Lenten journey.
FIRST FRIDAY
This Friday, March 4 is the First Friday of the
month. Mass will be at 8:15 am and Eucharistic
Adoration will be continuous from after Morning
Mass until Benediction at 5:30 pm. We invite
you to sign-up for ½ hour visits with our Eucharistic Lord.
PAPAL INTENTIONS FOR FEBRUARY
General Intention: that we take good care of creation
- a gift freely given - cultivating and protecting it for
future generations.
Missionary Intention: that opportunities may increase
for dialogue and encounter between the Christian
faith and the peoples of Asia.

"Confess our Mess"
I would like to invite you to our Penance Service on
March 1, 2016, Tuesday at 7 pm here at OLPH. This is
one important and helpful Lenten observance so we will
have a very meaningful season of repentance.
Lent is also a time to unclutter. And that's what the Sacrament does for us. It unclutters our lives of the sins and
the guilt that robs us of joy and freedom. That's exactly
what one feels after confession. Let us pray that we will
have the courage and the humility to confess our sins.
"24 Hours for Jesus"
Since it is the Jubilee Year of Mercy, we are going to
hold "24 Hours for Jesus" (adoration and confession) on
March 5 and 6, (Friday and Saturday) 2016. We will be
joining three other neighboring parishes: Santa Rosa de
Lima Church, Maywood, St. Gertrude The Great Church,
Bell Gardens, and Sagrado Corazon, Cudahy. The 24
hours will be divided among these four churches. OLPH,
Downey will be offering 8 hours of adoration and confession on March 5 from 6am to 2pm. We will be blessed to
also have some guest priests from these neighboring
churches to serve us in confession.
In case you're interested to visit these other churches,
Sagrado Corazon and St. Gertrude The Great will have
theirs on Friday, March 5, from 2pm to 10pm. Santa Rosa
de Lima Church will have theirs on Friday, March 5 from
10pm until Saturday March 6, 2pm. "24 Hours for Jesus"
will be a wonderful gift to our Lord and most of all for ourselves this season of Lent. Let's all try it!
Together In Mission
Let us all pray that we, as a parish, will always remember Together In Mission. "Together" means each family in
our parish would really take part in this worthy project.
"In" is the opposite of "out". Let's be all IN this together.
"Mission" is the very purpose, the very reason, "The Why"
of our lives. It is doing something for others especially
those in need. And TIM is one of the many missions we
need to respond to as we make a difference to people's
lives. For TIM, let's all work together as a TEAM!
"Feast and Fast"
How's your Lent doing so far? Lent is not only a time
of fasting. It's also a time for feasting. Fasting may not only
be applied to food. It can also be applied to habits. As we
fast from vices, let's at the same time feast on virtues. What
about fasting from complaining and feasting on gratitude?
Fasting from selfishness and feasting on generosity? Fasting
from speaking ill of people and feasting on charity and encouragement? Fasting from grudges and feasting on forgiveness and mercy? There are just so many opportunities
to fast and to feast. The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first fast and the first feast. It's never too late.
"To do more for the world
than the world does for you that is success." Henry Ford

It’s time to start planning for Vacation Bible School!
We are looking for adults and teens to volunteer for
a good time this summer at our annual Vacation Bible School. The theme is “Cave Quest.” This promises to be an awesome experience.

    
We are in the midst of Lent. This is a time of reflection that should lead to changes in our lives.
Last Sunday’s Gospel was on the Transfiguration.
How are you letting this season transfigure you?
Here’s an idea to pray over… Have you thought
about sharing your faith?
We have many catechetical programs here at
OLPH. All of them run on volunteer hands and
hearts. We have programs for ages 3 year-olds to
adults who are looking for something to enrich their
lives. Think about your life being transfigured
through service to others. Prayerfully consider
where you fit into this picture.
Don’t wait or think you don’t have the ability or
talent. We will give you the tools you need, all you
need to do is call the Religious Education office at

FAITH BUILDING
SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN
GOD’S MERCY IS REAL
Gather the most information possible
about your children’s whereabouts
Pope Francis recently said, “Mercy is real. It
is the first attribute of God.” How can we experience God’s mercy ourselves in a powerful and
personal way.
Practice it. Jesus taught us to pray, “Forgive us
our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.” In order to receive mercy, we
must offer it ourselves. Release your debtors,
whether it is material, emotional, spiritual, or
psychological debt they owe to you. Then learn
to ask for mercy from others. You will find that
kindness is contagious and God’s mercy will
flow through you.
Open the door to it. The door of your parish
church is the door to the path of salvation. Use it
at least weekly to attend Sunday Mass.
Ask for it. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is
the offer of Mercy God never withdraws. We
may be afraid to ask. To return to the embrace
of our Father, all we need do is recognize our
wrongs, ask his pardon, and to seek his love in
the Sacrament.
Growing in Faith, February 2016, Copyright 2016 Success Publishing & Media, LLC
The core best practice rule for child safety is
to have as much information as possible and
replace blind trust with knowledge and healthy
suspicion. That means asking questions:
“Where are you going? What will you do while
you are there? Who will be with you? When will
you return? Which adults will be present?” Then
evaluate the situation and determine if it is safe
for your child to participate. And, don’t be afraid
to say “No.” When you and your children think
safety, summer is filled with fun opportunities for
children to enjoy.

MARRIAGE WAKE-UP
As Barb was getting to know David and his
family, she was very impressed by how much his
parents loved each other.
"They're so thoughtful," Barb said. "Why,
your dad even brings your mom a cup of hot
coffee in bed every morning."
After a time, Barb and David were engaged,
and then married. On the way from the wedding to the reception, Barb again remarked on
David's loving parents, and even the coffee in
bed.
"Tell me," she said, "does it run in the family?"
"It sure does," replied David. "And I take after
my mom.

MINISTERIO HISPANO
Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Vi esta reflexión en Daily Reflections for Lent, Not by Bread Alone 2002 publicada

qué hora vas a regresar? ¿Qué adultos van a estar
presentes? Cuando tenga esta información evalúe
la situación y determine si es seguro que su hijo/a
participe o no en esa actividad. Y no tenga miedo de
decir “NO”. Cuando usted y su hijo/a piensan en la
seguridad el verano de ellos estará lleno de
diversión y oportunidades para que los niños se
diviertan. “Información de Seguridad para el Verano
puede ayudar a prevenir el abuso sexual”.
