CHILE
AT
SAN
For the fourth time, CinemaChile is back at San Sebastian
with a substantial delegation and seven films participating
in diverse competitions. We are delighted to be back,
because we perceive this instance as one of the most
important festivals for our industry, and we are convinced
that our filmmaking has consolidated itself as one of the
most interesting ones on an international level due to its
diversity and professional quality.
Several things have happened since the last time we
gathered, and our films have travelled to France, Korea,
Switzerland, Mexico, Germany, and many other places
of the world, where they have found recognition and
admiration. In one year, our filmmakers have received
awards as distinguished as an Academy Award, for the
short film Bear Story, by Gabriel Osorio.
On this opportunity, the Chilean film industry arrives
with Jesus, by Fernando Guzzoni, which is part of the
official selection. There’s also Rara, by Pepa San Martín;
Much Ado About Nothing, by Alejandro Fernández
Almendras; and The Blind Christ, by Christopher Murray,
which shall all participate in the Horizontes Latinos
section. Likewise, the film The Winds Know That I’m
Coming Back Home, by José Luis Torres Leiva, and
the short film The Stranger, by Pablo Álvarez, shall
participate in the Zabaltegui-Tabakalera section. Finally,
Neruda, by Pablo Larraín, will be available for viewing
in the Pearls section. Not to mention the delegation that
will be attending the Co-production Forum and Films in
Progress, both strategic opportunities for our industry’s
growth.
We are thrilled to be once more at San Sebastian, a
festival where we feel right at home.

Jesus (18) is in search of his identity. He
dances with a Korean dance group, doesn’t
attend school, and doesn’t have a job. Since
her mother died, he lives with his father,
Hector (53) in a department where TV
and silences make up for their inability to
communicate with each other. One night,
Jesus opens up to his father and confesses
him an irreversible event in which he was
involved. This fact forces them to join
together for the first time. Hector tries to
protect and help his son out, but keeping
the secret starts to trouble him. One day,
he decides to go to pick him up, but not
precisely to take him back home.

“Jesus is a perspective on the hyper-masculine
world, about the complexity of generational
clashes, about abandonment, violence, the
search for identity, betrayal, love, and the blurred reality of a contradictory and crude Chile.”

“I wasn’t the one driving,” says Agustín,
as he struggles to remember what went
down last night. All he has on mind is the
cute girl he was making out with in the
back seat of a moving car. But the driver,
he recalls, happens to be the son of one of
Chile’s most powerful politicians.
Alejandro’s meditation on Chilean justice began with his previous film, the Sundance-winning “To Kill a Man”. With a focus on how the
poor’s access to justice is frustratingly unfair,
the film reflects upon how the inoperative
Chilean judicial system could force a man to
take justice into his own hands, and the bitter
internal moral conflict that follows. With
“Much Ado About Nothing,” Alejandro opens
this portrayal of injustice from a different
perspective: that held within a
wealthy environment.

Michael (30) is a mechanic who says he
had a divine revelation in the desert. Far
from believing him, neighbors treat him as
the crazy person in town. One afternoon,
he realizes that a friend has suffered
an accident in a distant place. Michael
decides to leave everything behind so he
can embark on a journey barefoot, and
heal his friend with a miracle. On the road,
he starts drawing attention on himself
from people who’ve been exploited by
the mining industry, live a drug-abused
lifestyle, and see him as a new Christ who
is able to ease the harsh reality of the
Chilean desert.
“The Blind Christ’ reflects on how faith
emerges as a form of survival in Pampa del
Tamarugal, the most potent relgious pole in
the country as well as the victim of a dramatic
social reality due to the abuse of the mining
companies. A film inspired and protagonized
by the desert communities themselves.”

Being interested in boys, thinking they’re
stupid, being really close to your best
friend and keeping secrets from her,
having trouble in school, and having
annoying parents: these are the kind of
problems a 13-year-old girl is faced with.
For Sara, all of that has nothing to do with
the fact that her mother lives with another
woman. Her father doesn’t see it that way
though. DAAD Short Film Award winner
Pepa San Martín (Berlinale Shorts 2011: La
Ducha) takes a real-life Chilean custody
battle as the inspiration for her featurefilm debut.
“This film is based on a real case of discrimination and prejudice, a true story of courts
and testimony. Despite this, RARA is a movie
of love and ingenuity, about losses and how to
overcome them without losing your identity. I
think cinema can produce changes in society,
in a silent and ambiguous way, but perhaps
more deep and lasting than those achieved
with any slogan.”

Chilean documentary filmmaker Ignacio
Agüero is working on his first fiction
feature-length film, based on an old
documentary project he never carried
out. In the early 80’s in the Meulín Island,
in the region of Chiloé, a young couple
disappeared in the woods leaving no trace
at all. A whole myth grew around this
mysterious and tragic love story. Ignacio
Agüero will travel to the place where this
happened to scout locations, look for nonprofessional actors, and finally, little by
little, shape the development of his film.
“Discovering the films of Ignacio Agüero was
fundamental to my formation. I was always
very interested in his perspective and above all
his personal perception on how to approach
a film. This journey set out on in the film is a
reflection on time, the space inhabited by an
external gaze, and the meaning of film as a
tool for creation”.

Partly an essay, partly fiction and partly
documentary. A series of images and
testimonials diffusely reconstruct an
absent character, who embodies a social
climbing eagerness rooted deep inside
chilean society. An exercise of power
that manifests itself in different forms of
violence.
‘‘‘The Stranger’ embodies a medium to address
the issue of inherent violence and dominant
impetus of man, and mainly of the role that
society plays in its detonation.”,

through dark comedy, parody,
