If you can find a Hallmark card for both you will be very popular with your mom! This Ascension story is at the very end of the Gospel of Luke. It leads into another Ascension story at the very beginning of the Acts of the Apostles. Again, Luke wrote both thus the symmetry between them. Today the risen Lord Jesus Christ is explaining to his disciples that “the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations beginning from Jerusalem.” This is now the disciples mission and our mission. Mother’s know of this mission as they try to keep their families together by loving and forgiving. How often does the mother take the first step toward reconciliation in a family dispute? How often do the mothers seek peace first in the family. Our first reading from Acts gives us another Ascension story. Here Luke is more concerned about emphasizing the time of the restoration of Israel. Yet again the disciples are sent out as “witnesses to the ends of the earth.” They go in the power of the Holy Spirit that they will soon receive. It is this power in the Spirit that will bring people together. Acts gives us a further point for our consideration. “Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky?” The “two men dressed in white garments” are giving the disciples a push to get out and get to work! Do not worry about the coming of Jesus as he “will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.” Sometimes we too get stuck along the road in life. Our mothers are there at such times to help us to keep moving forward no matter the circumstances. In doing so they teach us about the part of the mission that calls us to persevere. Perseverance can be difficult but essential to proclaiming the Good News with joy. Finally today is a great day to thank our mothers both living and deceased. Our mothers are not perfect. But they feel deeply the needs of their family and do their best to faithfully carryout the mission of the Lord. Happy Mother’s Day! Feliz Día de la Madre! Fr. Dan Kayajan, CSC Pd. A Prayer For Mothers All-loving God, we give you thanks and praise for mothers young and old. We pray for young mothers, who give life and count toes and tend to our every need; May they be blessed with patience and tenderness to care for their families and themselves with great joy. We pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us; May they continue to guide in strong and gentle ways. We remember mothers who have separated from their children because of war, poverty or conflict; May they feel the loving embrace of our God who wipes every tear away. We pray for woman who are not mothers but still love and shape us with motherly care and compassion. We remember mothers, grandmothers & great grandmothers who are not longer with us But who live forever in our memory And nourish us with love. - Amen WEEK OF May 8, 2016 DAY MASS INTENTION SUNDAY/ DOMINGO, MAY. 8th 8:00 am Parishioners 11 am and 5pm All Mothers Happy Mothers Day Living & Deceased Feliz Dia de las Madre READING ACTIVITY Acts 7:55-60 Psalm 97 Revelation 22:12-14, 16-17, 20 John 17:20-26 Coffee & Donuts - after 8:00 Mass 9:30 am 6:15 pm Faith Formation and R.C.I.A.
