Voter Registration
Citizens who want to vote must be registered at
their current address at least 30 days prior to
Election Day.

Registration Locations
In Harris County voter registration is the
responsibility of the Harris County Tax AssessorCollector. Voter registration may be handled in one
of the following ways:

Voter Registration is Permanent
At the start of every even-numbered year a new
voter registration certificate will be mailed to each
registered voter. Voters who have moved or have
not received a current certificate are urged to
confirm or update their registration by contacting
the Tax Office at 713-368-8683 in a timely manner.
Note: College students may register and vote using
either their family home address or their residence
address at school.

Voting Information
On Election Day each voter must vote in the precinct
of record. Photo ID or a current voter registration
certificate is required. Precinct lists giving polling
locations are printed in the newspapers
immediately before an election and can be obtained
by calling 713-368-8683 or checking online at
www.harrisvotes.com.

Early Voting in Person
Early voting begins on the 17th day before the
election and ends on the 4th day before the election.
All registered Harris County voters may vote early at
any Harris County early voting location in person.

Voting by Mail
Those voters 65 years of age or older and those

days prior to Election Day; Applications must be
received no later than 7 days prior to Election Day.

Writing Your Representatives in Government
As a voter, your opinions help determine how your
elected officials may vote on a given issue or what
kind of policy decision they may make. Let your
representatives know your views by card, letter, fax
or e-mail. The proper salutations for government
representatives can be found on page 7. The
suggested closing for letters to the President is
“Very respectfully yours.” The closing for all other
letters is “Sincerely.”

The U.S. Senate has 100 members and is
empowered to advise the president, consent to
presidential appointments and treaties, and to try
impeachments. The Senate shares with the House
of Representatives power to levy taxes, borrow
money, regulate interstate commerce and declare
war.

City Council
City Council’s regular business meeting is
Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. A “Citizen Speakout”
session is Tuesday, 2:00 PM. Note: To address the
council citizens must register with the city
secretary’s office by 1:30 PM. Tuesday. (If there is a
Monday city holiday the Tuesday session is
combined with Wednesday regular session. The
public speaker portion is from 9:00 AM to Noon
with regular session immediately following.)
Citizens must register at least 30 minutes before
these meetings.

The constables are authorized peace officers and
chief process servers for the eight (8) Justice of the
Peace precincts in Harris County. They have countywide jurisdiction to serve papers for suits involving
debt or divorce, foreclosure, eviction writs and

court summons. They also issue criminal warrants
through justice of the peace courts and provide
bailiffs for those courts.
