the “Celebrando Austin Awards Banquet,” on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at the Hilton Austin Hotel.

Williamson County Small Business & Education Summit

The Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GAHCC)
invites you to attend the first ever Williamson County Small
Business & Education Summit on March 12th at the Marriott Hotel
in Round Rock, Texas.
Seating is limited. Purchase your tickets in advance before the
event sells out! Individual tickets are $30. Corporate tables at
the luncheon are available for $500 and include priority seating
and company name listed in the event program. Don’t miss the
deadline, February 15th, to purchase a table.
The event will focus on business outlook in 2010, small business
opportunities and how business can positively affect educational
and community opportunities for the area’s future workforce.
Partnering Chambers of Commerce include Cedar Park,
Georgetown, Hutto, Leander, Pflugerville, Round Rock, Taylor and
the Williamson County African Chamber.

Anticipating over 300 attendees, the event will be emceed by
Univision TV’s General Manager, Luis Patiño, and will feature
Texas Secretary of State Esperanza “Hope” Andrade and Texas
Commissioner of Higher Education Raymund A. Paredes. The
event will also have four breakout sessions covering the following
topics: Education in the Region, Small Business Opportunities,
Small Business in the Community and Access to Capital for Small

2010 Board Member Elections

On January 21st, the GAHCC Membership convened at the
Crowne Plaza Hotel at the Annual Members Meeting where they
networked and elected eight new Board Members to the GAHCC
Board of Directors. During the meeting, Blanca Garcia, 2009 Chair,
reviewed the Chamber’s 2009 accomplishments. Immediately
following the meeting, the 2010 Board convened to elect its
Executive Committee.

Arnold Garcia of the Austin American Statesman Presents Advocacy 101

Austin American Statesman’s Editorial Page Editor, Arnold Garcia led a
successful breakfast at the University of Texas at Austin Club on
Tuesday, January 26th. Leaders in the community learned how to
create an impact on the community through the written media.
A native of San Angelo, Garcia began his newspaper career in October
1968 as a general assignments reporter for the San Angelo
Standard-Times. Drafted in 1969, he served two years in the U.S. Army.
He returned from active duty and resumed his career at the
Standard-Times where he remained until coming to the
American-Statesman as a courthouse reporter in March 1974. Garcia,
56, holds a bachelor’s degree in history and government from Angelo State University and did graduate work in government at the University of Texas. In 2002, he served as a Pulitzer Prize juror in 2002 and chaired a Pulitzer Prize jury in 2003.
His presentation stimulated discussion on the importance of community leaders to become stronger advocates in the community
through written media. Education Foundation Trustee Heath Hignight quotes “Arnold’s message was pretty simple: it’s up to the
Hispanic community in Austin to tell its own story, and that people need to stand up now - not later - to tell their stories and make sure
they’re understood, not just heard.”
The Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation is a catalyst of change that promotes the value of education
to the GAHCC and the entire Austin Community. Our next event is an “Impact Leaders Luncheon” on Tuesday, February 16th.

Education Foundation Scholarships Now Available

The GAHCC Education Foundation invites students from Austin area high schools to apply for
$2,000 scholarships! The GAHCC Education Foundation is a member of the Hispanic Scholarship
Consortium (HSC) who matches a $1,000 Foundation Grant. Together, they also seek to accomplish
one goal: to open the doors to opportunity for Hispanic students through access to higher
education. From scholarships to college counseling to career development services, GAHCC and
the HSC offer Hispanic scholars the chance to pursue the first step of their dreams by attaining a
college education.
Apply at www.hispanicscholar.org and be sure to check off the GAHCC Education Foundation on
the application.
The deadline for applications is February 15th.
To be eligible, you must:
-Plan to enroll in a two or four-year accredited college or university in the United States on a full-time basis throughout the 2010-2011 academic
year
-Have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher on a 4.0 scale
-Reside in Bastrop, Burnet, Caldwell, Hays, Lee, Travis or Williamson counties
-Be of Hispanic origin
-Be a United States Citizen or a legal permanent resident with permanent resident card or current passport stamped I-551

Approved and Renewed in 2010 – Act Now

While the economy is currently improving, banks are under pressure from regulators and their internal loan review teams to purge their
portfolios and stamp out problems. What does that mean to you and your business?
1. Scrub your historical financials – be able to explain your financials and have a clear understanding of every line item. Be able to
produce accurate and timely financial information.
2. Prepare projections – explain and provide evidence about where your business is going and why they should believe you.
3. Review and clean up your personal credit – do not take on any excessive debts that you cannot sustain with a reasonable salary from
your business. If you do not pay your personal bills on time, do not expect to go far in the business credit world.
4. Be proactive – do not wait for your banker to ask you questions about problems. Go to them, take responsibility and tell them what
you are going to do to solve the issues.
5. Know your collateral – if there has been a decline in value, face up to the issues, adjust your financials and be conservative about
evaluations.
6. Communicate – sit down face to face and present your case to the bank in an organized and succinct fashion.

Stephanie Richmond Leads the Procurement & Certification Committee

Leading the GAHCC Procurement & Certification committee, Stephanie Richmond’s 2010 goal is to encourage and assist GAHCC members in
becoming HUB/DBE/MBE/WBE certified and providing them procurement opportunities.
The committee will respond to the results of a survey developed by the GAHCC during October and November 2009. Based upon the sample
used, over 70% of our small business members are Hispanic and/or Women-owned. However, only 25% are certified as minority-owned. Over
60% expressed interest in receiving certification information and assistance.
Stephanie’s vision is to work in partnership with the GAHCC and local and state agencies to assist the Chamber’s members, who are willing and
able, to do business with local and state government entities.
Stephanie brings seven years of public sector Supplier Diversity experience with the State of Texas Historically Underutilized Business (HUB)
Program, the Texas A&M University HUB Program and the Texas Building and Procurement Commission Statewide HUB Program. She also served
on the Board of Directors for the Central and South Texas Minority Business Council and the HUB Advisory Board for the Department of
Information Resources. Presently, Stephanie owns a consulting firm where she focuses on business development, supplier diversity and cross
border business initiatives between Mexico and Texas for small and large businesses.

Ed Gomez to Lead the GAHCC Health and Wellness Committee

The GAHCC is proud to introduce the new Chair of the Health and Wellness Committee, Ed Gomez.
Ed Gomez, former Executive Director of El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission, was recently hired
as Community Relations Manager for the Travis County Healthcare District. This is a newly
established position for the Healthcare District intended to expand the organization’s community
presence.
In his new position, Gomez serves as the community representative for both the District and the
affiliated CommUnityCare system of Federally Qualified Health Centers, and will head
development of all community relations programs. In addition to individuals and community
organizations, Gomez also works in collaboration with insurers, community coalitions and other
stakeholders to further increase access to quality healthcare for all eligible residents of Travis
County.
With his established rapport within the community at large and experience concerning healthcare issues of the uninsured and
underinsured, Gomez is an invaluable new addition to the GAHCC to help further the vision of Central Texas as a model healthy
community.
