Reflecting on God’s Word
Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios
Robert Fulghum tells the story of a troubled
man who paid a visit to his rabbi. He had experienced a great deal of failure in his life
and didn’t feel that he had what it takes to
accomplish his dreams. After listening to the
man’s tale of woe, the rabbi instructed him
to seek out page thirty of the New York
Times Almanac. That would be of help.
Following that instruction, he found that the
almanac entry was a list of the top hitters in
the annals of baseball, with Ty Cobb leading
the pack with a .376 batting average. Puzzled
as to how that applied to his problem, he returned to the rabbi for an explanation. The
rabbi explained that that page of Hall of
Fame hitters represented people who in essence failed about seven out of every ten
times at bat.
So if he thought his track record of failure
was a problem, he needed to think again.
The many failures put him in league with
some of the greatest hitters baseball had ever
known.

atribulado que fue a visitar a su rabino. Había
experimentado muchos fracasos en su vida y no
creía tener la capacidad para realizar sus sueños. Después de escuchar las quejas trágicas del
hombre el rabino le pidió que buscara la página
treinta del New York Times Almanac. Lo que
estaba allí le sería de ayuda.

una lista de los bateadores más importantes en

fracasado alrededor de siete veces de las diez

Vela del Santuario
The Church prescribes that at least one lamp
should continually burn before the tabernacle (Rit.
Rom. iv, 6), not only as an ornament of the altar,
but for the purpose of worship. It is also a mark of
honor. It is to remind the faithful of the presence of
Christ, and is a profession of their love and affection. Mystically it signifies Christ, for by this material light He is represented who is the "true light which enlightened every man" (John
1:9).
We invite you to use the sanctuary lamp which signifies Christ as
a gateway for all your petitions. Feel free to stop by the rectory to
request your petition to be posted in the bulletin. We will give a
complimentary card with your intention.
La Iglesia prescribe que al menos una lámpara debía arder continuamente delante del tabernáculo (Rit.
Rom. iv, 6), no sólo como un adorno del altar, pero
para el propósito de la adoración. También es una
marca de honor. Es para recordar a los fieles de la
presencia de Cristo, y es una profesión de su amor y
afecto. Místicamente que representa a Cristo, porque por es luz El
representa que es "la luz verdadera que ilumina a todo hombre" (Juan
1:9).

The Spirituality Corner
After we concluded the month of June dedicated to the Sacred
Heart of Jesus, it is good to know the teachings of our Holy Father,
Pope Francis on this subject matter. He spoke about this devotion
on June 9, 2013. He made the connection between the heart and
compassion. God shows His compassion through His heart. His
compassion is the movement of God towards men. He demonstrates
his closeness and total concern for His creatures. What follows is
the Holy Father’s complete text on the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The
text was taken from the Holy See web page.
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Good morning! The month of June is traditionally dedicated to the
Sacred Heart of Jesus, the greatest human expression of divine love.
In fact last Friday we celebrated the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart
of Jesus and this feast sets the tone for the entire month. Popular
piety highly values symbols, and the Heart of Jesus is the ultimate
symbol of God’s mercy. But it is not an imaginary symbol; it is a
real symbol which represents the centre, the source from which
salvation flowed for all of humanity.
In the Gospels we find various references to the Heart of Jesus. For
example there is a passage in which Christ himself says: “Come to
me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and
lowly in heart” (Mt 11:28-29). Then there is the key account of
Christ’s death according to John. Indeed this Evangelist bears witness to what he saw on Calvary, that is, when Jesus was already
dead a soldier pierced his side with a spear and blood and water
came out of the wound (cf. Jn 19:33-34). In that apparently coincidental sign John recognizes the fulfillment of the prophecies: from
the Heart of Jesus, the Lamb sacrificed on the Cross, flow forgiveness and life for all people.
The mercy of Jesus is not only an emotion; it is a force which gives
life that raises man! Today’s Gospel also tells us this in the episode
of the widow of Nain (Lk 7:11-17). With his disciples, Jesus arrives
in Nain, a village in Galilee, right at the moment when a funeral is
taking place. A boy, the only son of a widow, is being carried for
burial. Jesus immediately fixes his gaze on the crying mother. The
Evangelist Luke says: “And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her” (v. 13). This “compassion” is God’s love for man, it
is mercy, thus the attitude of God in contact with human misery,
with our destitution, our suffering, our anguish. The biblical term
“compassion” recalls a mother’s womb. The mother in fact reacts in
a way all her own in confronting the pain of her children. It is in
this way, according to Scripture, that God loves us.
What is the fruit of this love and mercy? It is life! Jesus says to the
widow of Nain: “Do not weep” and then he calls the dead boy and
awakes him as if from sleep (cf. vv. 13-15). Let’s think about this,
it’s beautiful: God’s mercy gives life to man, it raises him from the
dead. Let us not forget that the Lord always watches over us with
mercy; he always watches over us with mercy. Let us not be afraid
of approaching him! He has a merciful heart! If we show him our
inner wounds, our inner sins, he will always forgive us. It is pure
mercy Let us go to Jesus!
Let us turn to the Virgin Mary: her Immaculate Heart, a mother’s
heart, has fully shared in the “compassion” of God, especially in the
hour of the passion and death of Jesus. May Mary help us to be
mild, humble and merciful with our brothers.
El Rincón de la Espiritualidad
Después de haber concluido el mes de junio dedicado al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, es bueno conocer lo que el Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco nos enseñó en la audiencia del 9 de junio 2013 sobre ésta devoción. Vemos como el Santo Padre nos muestra la conexión entre corazón y compasión. Dios muestra su compasión por medio de su corazón. La compasión es el movimiento de Dios hacia los hombres;
muestra su cercanía y su total preocupación por sus criaturas. Enseguida el texto del Santo Padre extraído del sitio oficial de la Santa
Sede.
Queridos hermanos y hermanas, ¡buenos días!
El mes de junio está tradicionalmente dedicado al Sagrado Corazón de
Jesús, máxima expresión humana del amor divino. Precisamente el
viernes pasado, en efecto, hemos celebrado la solemnidad del Corazón de Cristo, y esta fiesta da el tono a todo el mes. La piedad popular valora mucho los símbolos, y el Corazón de Jesús es el símbolo
por excelencia de la misericordia de Dios; pero no es un símbolo imaginario, es un símbolo real, que representa el centro, la fuente de la
que brotó la salvación para toda la humanidad.
En los Evangelios encontramos diversas referencias al Corazón de
Jesús, por ejemplo en el pasaje donde Cristo mismo dice: «Venid a mí
todos los que estáis cansados y agobiados, y yo os aliviaré. Tomad mi
yugo sobre vosotros y aprended de mí, que soy manso y humilde de
corazón» (Mt 11, 28-29). Es fundamental, luego, el relato de la muerte de Cristo según san Juan. Este evangelista, en efecto, testimonia lo
que vio en el Calvario, es decir, que un soldado, cuando Jesús ya estaba muerto, le atravesó el costado con la lanza y de la herida brotaron
sangre y agua (cf. Jn 19, 33-34). Juan reconoce en ese signo, aparentemente casual, el cumplimiento de las profecías: del corazón de Jesús,
Cordero inmolado en la cruz, brota el perdón y la vida para todos los
hombres.
Pero la misericordia de Jesús no es sólo un sentimiento, ¡es una fuerza
que da vida, que resucita al hombre! Nos lo dice también el Evangelio
de hoy, en el episodio de la viuda de Naín (Lc 7, 11-17). Jesús, con
sus discípulos, está llegando precisamente a Naín, un poblado de Galilea, justo en el momento que tiene lugar un funeral: llevan a sepultar a
un joven, hijo único de una mujer viuda. La mirada de Jesús se fija
inmediatamente en la madre que llora. Dice el evangelista Lucas: «Al
verla el Señor, se compadeció de ella» (v. 13). Esta «compasión» es el
amor de Dios por el hombre, es la misericordia, es decir, la actitud de
Dios en contacto con la miseria humana, con nuestra indigencia, nuestro sufrimiento, nuestra angustia. El término bíblico «compasión»
remite a las entrañas maternas: la madre, en efecto, experimenta una
reacción que le es propia ante el dolor de los hijos. Así nos ama Dios,
dice la Escritura.
Y ¿cuál es el fruto de este amor, de esta misericordia? ¡Es la vida!
Jesús dijo a la viuda de Naín: «No llores», y luego llamó al muchacho
muerto y le despertó como de un sueño (cf. vv. 13-15). Pensemos
esto, es hermoso: la misericordia de Dios da vida al hombre, le resucita de la muerte. El Señor nos mira siempre con misericordia; no lo
olvidemos, nos mira siempre con misericordia, nos espera con misericordia. No tengamos miedo de acercarnos a Él. Tiene un corazón
misericordioso. Si le mostramos nuestras heridas interiores, nuestros
pecados, Él siempre nos perdona. ¡Es todo misericordia! Vayamos a
Jesús.
Dirijámonos a la Virgen María: su corazón inmaculado, corazón de
madre, compartió al máximo la «compasión» de Dios, especialmente
en la hora de la pasión y de la muerte de Jesús. Que María nos ayude
a ser mansos, humildes y misericordiosos con nuestros hermanos.
