Letter from China’s First Lady and UNESCO Special Envoy to DirectorGeneral expresses “shock” over Nigerian Schoolgirls’ abduction
In a letter to UNESCO Director-General
Irina Bokova, the First lady of China and
UNESCO Special Envoy for Advancing Girls’
and Women’s Education Peng Liyuan, called
on the international community to “make
every effort” to rescue more than 270
school girls abducted from their school in
Nigeria on 14 April.
The First Lady wrote: “I am extremely worried
about their situation and strongly condemn
this severe violence.

“Students are our future, and schools are places where our children learn, grow and pursue their
dreams. Girls’ safety and their right to education are critical and should be protected.
“As a mother, I understand the anxiety and worries of their families. As UNESCO Special Envoy for
Advancing Girls’ and Women’s Education, I call on the international community to make every effort
to rescue them and bring them back home and to school safe and sound.”
In her response to Peng Liyuan, Mrs Bokova thanked the First Lady for her “powerful Statement of
condemnation”. “As First Lady of the world’s largest nation – a champion country that has placed
educational progress at the centre of its development – (it) carries particularly strong resonance,” she
said, adding that “UNESCO is determined to support the Nigerian Government in its efforts to bring
these girls back to safety as well as to take all measures within our mandate to protect schools and
make them secure for all students and teachers.”
In March this year, Ms Bokova nominated Peng Liyuan as a UNESCO Special Envoy in recognition
“of her commitment to empowering girls and women through quality education, her outstanding
contribution to fighting inequalities in education, her devoted service to human development and
creativity, and her dedication to the ideals and aims of the Organization.”

Maisons paysannes de France organise depuis 1985 un concours national qui récompense des propriétaires ayant
entrepris des restaurations de maisons rurales, de bâtis agricoles, de petits édifices ruraux…
Le jury national a récompensé cette année cinq candidats sur l’ensemble de la France. Ces prix ont été décernés pour
la qualité des travaux entrepris et pour des démarches qui ont méritées d’être reconnues et encouragées.
Les récompenses seront remises à l’occasion de l’Assemblée Générale de Maisons Paysannes de France, le 26 avril
prochain, à la mairie du 9e arrondissement de Paris.

Nka Foundation invites entries for Mud House Design 2014, an international architecture competition open to recent
graduates and students of architecture, design and others from around the world who think earth architecture can be
beautiful.
The challenge is to design a single-family unit of about 30 x 40 feet on a plot of 60 x 60 feet to be built by maximum
use of earth and local labor in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The client of your design is the middle-income family in
any township of your choice in the Ashanti Region. Total costs of constructing the design entry must not exceed $6,000; land value is excluded
from this price point. The entry should serve as an example to the local people that mud architecture can be beautiful and durable.

Competitions - UK Museum of the Year Shortlist Announced
The Art Fund recently announced the six museums on the UK’s 2014 Museum of the Year shortlist, its annual award for the
outstanding museum of the year. The award celebrates every aspect of what makes a museum successful, but this year the list
was highlighted by crucial work by architects, including renovations of the Tate Britain and the Ditchling Museum of Art & Craft,
as well as the newly-constructed Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth. The winner from the six museums will receive a £100,000
prize, and will be announced on July 9th…

2nd call for proposals for ASEF Creative Networks 2014/2015 - Deadline: 15 July

English Heritage is seeking experts in modern architecture, planning and local government and gardens and landscapes to fill three places on
the London Advisory Committee. The committee advises on historic environment issues in London which are novel, contentious, exceptionally
sensitive, technically or intellectually complex or which raise broader policy issues. The Committee meets around six times a year and has
occasional site visits. The positions are unpaid although meeting expenses will be covered. Anyone interested should email the Committee

Awards - Orhan Pamuk's Museum of Innocence named the 2014 European Museum of the Year - Turkey
The writer Orhan Pamuk's Museum of Innocence has been named the European Museum of the Year in a
ceremony held in Tallinn at the weekend. Pamuk has dedicated the prize to the miners who were killed last week
in an explosion in Soma, Turkish media reports.
When the museum opened in April 2012, Andrew Finkel, The Art Newspaper's Istanbul-based correspondent,
visited and met its founder.
The museum advertised as the first to be inspired by a novel opened its doors in the back streets of Istanbul... It looks like a museum, feels like
a museum and is open late on Fridays and closed on Mondays. Yet the first question posed by the Museum of Innocence, created by the Nobel
Prize-winning author Orhan Pamuk, is whether it really is a museum at all, and not an infinitely elaborate installation—an extended conceit of
art imitating art, albeit one with a gift shop that sells posters and fridge magnets…

Who says only modern-day pro wrestling is fake Researchers have deciphered a Greek document that shows an
ancient wrestling match was fixed. The document, which has a date on it that corresponds to the year A.D. 267, is a
contract between two teenagers who had reached the final bout of a prestigious series of games in Egypt. This is the
first time that a written contract between two athletes to fix a match has been found from the ancient world.

'Accidental' Siberian Mummies Part of Mysterious Ancient Arctic Civilization - Siberia - Russian Federation
Russian archaeologists are trying to discover the origins of a group of 800-year-old bodies found just 29 km from
the Arctic Circle, which were accidentally mummified by copper when they were buried. The mummies were
discovered at Zeleniy Yar in Siberia, in 34 shallow graves. According to the Siberian Times, 11 of the bodies found
in the medieval burial place had either smashed skeletons or missing and shattered skulls.

A taste of Bronze Age Brew - Denmark
A modern interpretation of Denmark’s oldest known beer is now on sale at the Danish National Museum. Named
“Egtved Girl’s Brew” it is based on the residue analysis of a fermented drink found in 1921 within the grave of a
young female from the Bronze Age. Egtved Girl was buried on a summers day in 1371 BCE. She was provided
with a range of rich grave goods including a bronze dagger and a belt disk, but there was also something within
the grave to quench her thirst in the afterlife.

Documentarán patrimonio cultural de Isla de Mona (Puerto Rico)
La investigación se desprende de un acuerdo entre el Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, la Universidad de
Cambridge y el Museo Británico.
Un nuevo acuerdo de investigación arqueológica documentará el patrimonio cultural de Isla de Mona,
particularmente, “los cambios físicos y de medio ambiente que ha experimentado la isla durante los 4,500 años de
ocupación humana”.
La alianza, realizada entre el Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, la Universidad de Cambridge y el Museo Británico, comenzará a principios de

Temple-cathedral in Pozzuoli reopened after restoration
The temple-cathedral in Pozzuoli (Naples) reopened after restoration. In 2004 a professional team led by Marco
Dezzi Bardeschi (Marco Dezzi Bardeschi, Gnosis Architettura, Renato De Fusco, Laura Gioeni), won an
international contest for the restoration of the temple― cathedral.
The monument presented three recognizable historical thresholds: 1) the classical Roman building: Capitolium in
the republican age, Temple in Augustus imperial era; 2) the St. Procolo cathedral: successive conversion into
church with the adjoining chapels (XIV―XV century), until the baroque period (from 1631); 3) the unachieved and destructive work of
archaeological restoration (1968―79) that, after the appearance of some classical elements in the walls after the fire in 1964, had been aimed
at the complete reconstruction of the classical temple. Finally, the earthquake in 1980 and the phenomenon of bradyseism had led to abandon
the whole area of Rione Terra. The restoration work has been mainly focused on two goals: 1) the greatest respect of the material context
through an attentive intervention of conservation, aimed at guaranteeing the readability of the document in its whole historical stratification; 2)
to provide new added parts necessary to return an appropriate use to the complex, and to assure through its use its real preservation.
Conservation project has remained within the boundaries of an intervention aimed at removing the degradation pathologies without aspirations
to the unity of an archaeological reconstruction. The re― use project and the functional salvage were addressed at conciliating two, seemingly
opposite, objectives: on one hand the collective cult function by assuring the continuity of the liturgical use, and, on the other hand, its cultural
function as archaeological museum.

Land and archaeology: a tense relationship

There is a saying about archaeology in Greece that ‘every time you stick a shovel in the dirt, an artifact comes out.’ I can
guarantee you with some professional experience that this is not entirely true. However, Greece is a country that is abundant in
antiquities, both movable and ‘immovable’. Because of this richness, conflict frequently exists between landowners, developers,
and archaeologists. Policies regarding archaeology as property of the state and the national heritage of the people have the
potential to remove lands and artifacts from circulation for their protection. National legislation provides the government with the
power to expropriate private property, if it has archaeological value. This course of action seemingly maintains the assumption that the
preservation of archaeology outweighs the possible use value of the land itself. While some view the tangible remains of archaeology as for the
‘people’ or ‘public’, this designation has not produced a workable model either to ensure the preservation of sites and objects or to protect the
rights of freeholders…

entregó en concesión minera no metálica, su extensión se ha reducido de 45 a 19 hectáreas. Su apariencia ha ido
adoptando la forma de una gran meseta con tajos verticales de hasta 80 metros de altura. En los últimos años, las
labores de extracción de arena gruesa continúan provocando la inestabilidad de los taludes, causando el colapso
progresivo del complejo arqueológico.

Le ministre de l'Environnement Nobuteru Ishihara a annoncé qu'il désignera 31ème parc national du Japon les îles
Kerama d'Okinawa. Il s'agit de la première désignation depuis celle de 1987 pour le parc national de Kushiro
Marshland à Hokkaido. Les îles Kerama sont composées d'une trentaine d'ilots, à 40 km de Naha, et sont célèbres
pour leur eau claire et la diversité du récif corallien. Les eaux à 30km de leurs côtes seront également désignées
parc maritime national.

Toxicité & biodiversité : relations déchiffrées par des chercheurs belges
Des chercheurs des universités de Namur et de Gand ont mis au point le premier modèle capable de prédire l'impact
des produits chimiques sur la biodiversité aquatique. Leurs travaux mettent également en évidence qu'au sein d'une

Modern sharks are not "living fossil" replicas of their prehistoric ancestors but have evolved significantly over
millions of years to develop their hallmark design, a consensus-busting study said Wednesday. The newly discovered
fossil skull of a shark-like ancestor of all jawed vertebrates adds to evidence that a bony skeleton, not a
cartilaginous one, was the prototype. The ancestor, which lived in the Palaeozoic era some 325 million years ago,
turns out to have had characteristics of fish with cartilaginous skeletons, like sharks, and of bony ones like salmon
and tuna, a reasearch team wrote in the journal Nature.

The universities of the Department of Tolima in Colombia do not have an established academic tradition for either design or
architectural restoration. In fact, it is only since 2006 that the University of Ibagué has offered the first institutional summer
course in restoration. This course has allowed the introduction and the development of different important themes for the
formation of architects: architectural design, history of architecture and conservation projects for the preservation of cultural
patrimony. This papers illustrates two international academic experiences that can demonstrate the importance of the study of
design for restoration projects.

NASA-UCI study indicates loss of West Antarctic glaciers appears unstoppable
A new study by researchers at NASA and the University of California, Irvine, finds a rapidly melting section of
the West Antarctic Ice Sheet appears to be in an irreversible state of decline, with nothing to stop the glaciers in
this area from melting into the sea.
The study presents multiple lines of evidence, incorporating 40 years of observations that indicate the glaciers in
the Amundsen Sea sector of West Antarctica "have passed the point of no return," according to glaciologist and
lead author Eric Rignot, of UC Irvine and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California. The new study has been accepted
for publication in the journal Geophysical Research Letters…

UNESCO leads ‘Climate and Water’ session at the World Mountain Forum, Cusco, Peru
The World Mountain Forum (WMF) will be held from 22 to 25 May 2014 in Cusco, Peru, to promote sustainable
mountain development (SMD). The forum, organized by the Government of Peru, is an initiative of the Mountain
Partnership, whose members include UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme (IHP) and several other
institutions worldwide. It will contibute to the preparation of the next Climate Summit, COP20.
During the event UNESCO will lead a session on ‘Climate and Water’, allowing scientists, water managers and
decision-makers, among others, to share experiences and recommendations on how to deal with climate change impacts on water resources in
mountain areas.

En un lugar a 163 kilómetros de la ciudad Perito Moreno, en Santa Cruz, al Sur de Argentina, se encuentra
uno de los sitios que la UNESCO declaró en 1999 Patrimonio Mundial de la Humanidad: la “Cueva de la
Manos”, un arte rupestre que tanto en su interior como su exterior entusiasma a exploradores nacionales y
extranjeros.
Susana Bosio, Docente de la Universidad del Salvador de Buenos Aires, profesora especializada en historia del arte explicó en su artículo “La
Cueva de las Manos”, que en las paredes se encuentran especialmente tres períodos de este arte en que se observan manos en negativo y
positivo, como también “representaciones de animales, especialmente guanacos, improntas de ñandúes y felinos, grecas, puntos, líneas

The ENUMERATE Survey Report on Digitization in Cultural Heritage Institutions 2014 published in January 2014 and represents
the third major study into the current state of digitization in Europe. It presents the results of a survey carried out by the
ENUMERATE Thematic Network, with the help of national coordinators, in 33 European countries (in 11 languages). Almost 1.400
institutions participated between September and December 2013 to answer questions on the state of digitization activity in the

Chanticleer - Wayne - Pennsylvania - USA
This 35-acre suburban estate on Philadelphia’s affluent Main Line takes its name from the legendary rooster,
prominently displayed on the estate’s historic entrance gate pillars. Designed for Adolph Rosengarten, Sr. by architect
Charles L. Borie and completed in 1913, the Pastoral Style manor was sited atop an expansive, undulating lawn.
Though landscape architect Thomas Sears drew plans for an original landscape design, there is little evidence that his
design was ever installed. In 1925 Charles Willing and Joseph P. Sims enveloped Chanticleer with a pool, teahouse,
and sunken garden. Expanding their estate in 1933 from its original six acres, the Rosengartens purchased the nearby Minder House for their
son and, a few years later, constructed another house for their daughter. Working at the Minder House in 1958, Willing and Sims developed
gardens incised by a rivulet which cascades into a large pond.

Mapping Kiley – the Dan Kiley Built Works Index - USA
After moving to Massachusetts in 2004, landscape architect Kris Lucius started spending his
weekends traveling to designed landscapes around Boston and New England. Nurturing a love
for the work of landscape architect Dan Kiley (1912-2004), he began to focus his travels on
visiting the local works of this significant Modernist designer many of whose commissions are
little known. An important resource for Lucius is Dan Kiley and Jane Amidon’s 1999 book Dan
Kiley: The Complete Works of America’s Master Landscape Architect (the most complete compendium of Kiley’s work) though the vast majority
of the projects listed are denoted only by a single line containing the site’s name, year of completion and location.

Biography of Harriet Pattison (1928, USA)
Born on October 29, 1928, Harriet Pattison was the youngest of William Lawrence and Bonnie Abbott Pattison’s seven
children. She attended Chicago’s progressive Francis Parker School and graduated from the University of Chicago’s
College with a B.A. in 1951. She then enrolled at Yale University’s School of Drama where she studied set design
before ultimately switching to the actors’ program. While at Yale, Pattison elected to take Josef Albers’ color theory
course, learning lessons which she described as lifelong. She then worked in film, attended a landscape painting
program at Chicago’s Art Institute, and spent two terms in graduate studies in philosophy at the University of Edinburgh in 1954.

facilidades de comunicación y transporte se desarrollaron conjuntamente con el avance tecnológico de los pueblos
muchas veces a través de caminos, o de simples y tortuosos senderos.
El valle de Arequipa estuvo conectado con otras regiones gracias a varios e importantes caminos. Entre los mas importantes se cuentan el de
Cabrerías, el de Chiguata - Tambo de León, el de la Quebrada de Linga, y el de Calderas.

The ASADWA International Conference, organized from 13 to 16 December 2010 in Valparaiso (Chili) within the Universal Forum of Cultures
(Valparaiso, 22 October 2010 until 7 January 2011) contributed to this task by inviting scientific researchers to the International Conference of
‘Arid and Semi-Arid Development through Water Augmentation’ which brought together researchers with a common goal to increase the water

For those unfamiliar with Valparaíso, allow me to inform you: this city is a treasure. The UNESCO World Heritage site
and cultural capital of Chile is defined by its winding paths, happily graffitied streets, antiquated funiculars, and –
above all – its colorful, tightly-packed hills. And because of its precarious density, the city was brought to its knees by
vicious forest fires this past weekend, fires which quickly spread and consumed 2,500 acres, displacing over 12,500
people whose homes were destroyed.

A new study by researchers at NASA and the University of California, Irvine, finds a rapidly
melting section of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet appears to be in an irreversible state of

Digital modeling of the impact of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake

The work goes out of the analysis of existing mathematical models for the 3D digital representation of cities. So there are
analysed fours such models following a grid of criteria which includes also the link between the geometrical representation and
the semantic enrichment: GIS, Google Earth, CAD and Second life. Their functionalities are in dialogue. Also, senses connected
to the impact of earthquakes are represented. The goal is to develop a model for the digital representation of the changes
introduced by the 1755 earthquake on the urban structure of Lisbon. The proposed model is analysed using the same grid. It
includes a didactic component, based on the game, reason for which this aspect of architectural representation has been analysed, digital and
not only. Only the urban landmarks drawn on the azulejos ceramics which presents the city before the earthquake are represented in 3D
through morphogenesis according to the developed criteria, these being in dialogue with the map, historical and contemporary, which evolves in
time during the game. The work presents the concept and the computer code.

The first library of Muyinga, part of a future inclusive school for deaf children, in locally sourced compressed earth
blocks, built with a participatory approach. Our work in Africa started within the framework of OpenStructures.net.
BC was asked to scale the “Open structures” model to an architectural level. A construction process involving endusers and second-hand economies was conceived. Product life cycles, water resource cycles en energy cycles were
connected to this construction process. This OpenStructures architectural model was called Case Study (CS) 1:
Katanga, Congo. It was theoretical, and fully research-based. 5 years later, the library of Muyinga in Burundi nears completion.

Vingt ans après la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, les villes Korntal-Münchingen (Allemagne), Mirande
(France) et Tubize (Belgique) ont été jumelées. Grâce au dialogue continu, aux visites réciproques
et évènements communautaires, les rapports d’amitié ont émergé au cours des années en
appuyant le partenariat créé il y 50 ans.
Nombreux invités des villes partenaires célèbrent du 9 au 11 Mai ce jubilé imposant. Pour cette
occasion, le Musée du Patrimoine (Heimatmuseum) à Kotntal-Münchingen vient d’inaugurer l’exposition «50 années de jumelage des villes:
Korntal-Münchingen, Mirande et Tubize». Les années 1960 reviennent en mémoire à travers des photographies, documents, et films qui
prennent les visiteurs au temps où les trois villes ont été jumelées.
Sous le slogan «Wir sind Europa» (Nous sommes l’Europe), l’exposition appel à connaître de près les voisins français et belges. De plus, pour
ceux qui veulent tester leur connaissance, il existe un quiz pour enfants et adultes. Le premier prix est un voyage pour deux personnes à
Strasbourg.
L’exposition «50 années de jumelage des villes: Korntal-Münchingen, Mirande et Tubize» aura lieu jusqu’au 31 Août 2014.

Il y a plus de 1900 ans l'Inde n'avait pas de castes
Selon une analyse génétique, l'Inde n'a pas toujours connu le système des castes. L'étude de David Reich, de l'Harvard Medical School, et de
Lalji Singh, de l'IIT BHU à Varanasi, démontre un mélange entre population jusqu'au premier siècle après J-C. Une exogamie qui par postulat
reflète l'absence de règles sociales, l'absence de caste. Les scientifiques ont analysé le patrimoine génétique de 73 groupes ethniques, choisis
pour leurs origines géographiques et religieuses différenciées, ainsi que leur appartenance à des castes différentes.

Il y a 4000 ans, un évènement climatique pluvieux déclenchait de grands glissements de terrain dans le Sud-Ouest
des Alpes
Grâce à l’utilisation de la méthode de datation par les nucléides cosmogéniques (10Be et 36Cl)1, une équipe de
chercheurs de Géoazur (UNS-CNRS-OCA-IRD) et du CEREGE (AMU-CNRS-IRD-Collège de France) a reconstitué
l’historique du déclenchement des glissements de terrain dans le Sud-Ouest des Alpes sur plusieurs milliers d’années.
Cette étude a mis en évidence le lien temporel entre ces grands glissements de terrain et les intenses perturbations
climatiques survenues aux cours de l’Holocène, il y a environ 4 000 ans. Ces travaux ont été réalisés grâce à un financement de la région
PACA2. Ils sont parus dans la revue Quaternary Science Reviews.

number of renowned experts. The discussion is moderated by Mr Francesco Bandarin, Assistant Director-General for Culture.
Among the participants, archaeologist Monica Hanna, who has a long experience in dealing with looting in Egypt. She is a
committed activist involved in social media platforms for the protection of cultural heritage. H. E. Mr Porfirio Thierry MuñozLedo, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Mexico to UNESCO, will provide his point of view with regards to the challenges faced by countries
in the development of capacities for the fight against the illicit trafficking of cultural property.

the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict was affixed to the National Historical Museum of the Republic of Argentina.

fifteenth anniversary of the 1999 Second Protocol to this Convention.
Over the past years, cultural heritage has been under attack in many conflicts, such as in Libya and Mali as well as in Syria,
where we have reached a point of no return in the destruction of the cultural heritage. World Heritage sites have suffered
considerable damage and many of them are used for military purposes. The destruction of cultural heritage affects people over the long term,
attacking a collective sense of identity, as well as trust and social cohesion, weakening efforts for reconciliation and peace.

crucial to preserve the cultural identity of the Syrian people.

Kerama d'Okinawa. Il s'agit de la première désignation depuis celle de 1987 pour le parc national de Kushiro
Marshland à Hokkaido. Les îles Kerama sont composées d'une trentaine d'ilots, à 40 km de Naha, et sont célèbres
pour leur eau claire et la diversité du récif corallien. Les eaux à 30km de leurs côtes seront également désignées
parc maritime national.

Is it time the UK ratified the Hague Convention
Cultural and political figures are calling on the British government to sign up to the Hague Convention, which
provides protection for a country’s heritage in times of conflict. Writing in the Guardian newspaper on 15 April,
Helen Goodman, the Labour MP and shadow culture minister, says there is “no excuse” for Sajid Javid, the new
Conservative secretary of state for culture, media and sport, to not ratify the treaty.

Canadian government to redevelop Vancouver’s Granville Island, a former industrial site, into a people place.

Encroachments – physical manifestation of informal sector – are the best example of uncontrolled growth. This article explores the role of
physical environment (the formal sector) in the emerging form of encroachments (the informal sector). The article aims to identify meaningful
relations between these elements of the formal physical environment and the emerging form of encroachments. Chaotic characteristics of
encroachments pose challenges to the reductionist approach for a better insight. Conceptual inputs from complexity science offer an effective
framework for analysing the same. A survey was done to document the physical environment representing formal sector and encroachments.
The emerging form of encroachments is analysed based on concepts of complexity science. The identified determinants are found to be in
hierarchical order, namely, socio-economic level, city level, area level and cluster level. The cluster-level determinants have individual
properties acting concurrently, resulting into emergent property of physical environment, either encouraging or discouraging for encroachments.
A comprehensive look reveals that the form of encroachments possesses a hidden order, which is derivative of identified determinants acting
concurrently. The article highlights vital approaches in attaining design and management strategies, to aid the coexistence of the informal and
formal sectors observed in the cities of developing countries.

In this timely book, Italian urban scholars Pier Carlo Palermo and Davide Ponzini call for no less than a broad reconsider-ing of
the links between urban planning and urban develop-ment. In their view, a general misunderstanding of urban design and its
exclusion from scholarly debates of urban planning has created a “disciplinary void,” leaving “both fields impoverished” (p. 204).

Shark fisheries management: TRAFFIC develops new risk assessment method
TRAFFIC has developed M-risk, a novel method to quantify the risk posed by over-exploitation of shark stocks as part
of a project supported by the UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
The technique assesses the risk that adequate management measures are not in place to protect shark species
adequately (M-Risk) and is detailed in Development of a Rapid Management-Risk Assessment Method for Fish
Species through its Application to Sharks: Framework and Results, published earlier this month.
The study builds on earlier work by TRAFFIC examining the intrinsic vulnerability of different shark species to over-exploitation.

On 27 March 2014 the arrivals hall of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport was bustling with passengers as
usual. Jin Kai, a detector dog with the Guangzhou Customs Anti-smuggling Police, and one of the first graduates
from a detector dog training programme run by the China Customs Anti-smuggling Bureau in co-operation with
TRAFFIC and supported by WWF Germany and WWF-UK, was carrying out a routine inspection of passengers’
baggage.
Suddenly Jin Kai reacted strongly to the suitcase of an in-bound passenger. A Customs Officer checked the luggage and found 13 ivory
bracelets, weighing a total of 420 g.

Taxi drivers are revving up the effort to stop wildlife crime in Malaysia by featuring specially designed car stickers that call

Designed by TRAFFIC, some 500 car stickers will be distributed to drivers by MyTeksi, the largest automated smartphone

Ministry of Health joins efforts to save rhinos: Call to cease use of rhino horn for medical purposes
This month the Traditional Medicine Administration under Viet Nam’s Ministry of Health (MoH), TRAFFIC, the wildlife
trade monitoring network, and WWF-Viet Nam are collaborating to host workshops to discuss ways traditional
medicine practitioners can help save rhinos.
The first of two workshops was held in Ha Noi on May 7th and the second will take place in Ho Chi Minh City on May

Qatar fire station to be transformed into art centre
A former fire station in Doha is due to be transformed into a space for artist residencies and exhibitions, the
Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) announced at a press conference on Wednesday, 5 March. The building, which
is being redesigned by the Qatari architect Ibrahim Al Jaidah, will include 24 studios and a 700 sq. m gallery,
housed in the old garage, to be used by artists participating in the programme as well as the local community.

Saving Sharks Starts with Knowing Where they Swim
Where do sharks go This basic question is one that is rarely considered when creating protected ocean or marine
reserves, yet it is one of the most critical ones to conservationists working to protect sharks in the Eastern Tropical
Pacific. Turtle Island Restoration Network in partnership with OCEARCH, the Galapagos National Park Service and
the Charles Darwin Foundation are beginning to glean insights into this important question from tracking the
movements of more than 60 fish of a variety of species, from the top predator tiger sharks, down to skipjack tuna
and rainbow runners in the Galapagos Marine Reserve.

Salmon Migrating to the Sea
The waters of Arroyo, Larson and San Geronimo Creeks are alive from March to June year with silver
splashes of young Coho Salmon and Steelhead Trout. These young fish, known as smolts, make the

History lovers to gather for Battle of Bannockburn conference
History lovers and academics are being invited to a conference about the Battle of Bannockburn. The event,
organised by the University of Stirling and the Strathmartine Trust, is taking place on June 25 and 26 this year.
It will coincide with a week of activities to mark the 700th anniversary of the famous Battle. The event is being
held in Forth Valley College's new campus at Drip Road, on the outskirts of Stirling.

The Sarasota Architectural Foundation (SAF) has announced that a replica of Paul Rudolph’s Walker Guest House will
be constructed at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida. It is hoped the iconic, 24′ x 24′
vacation cottage will be opened to the public by 2015, after which it will be disassembled and transported to select
museums around the country.

The creative minds behind Luftwerk have turned to Kickstarter to crowdfund a project that would transform Ludwig
Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House into an immersive light show. Similar to their installation at Frank Lloyd
Wright’s Fallingwater residence in 2011, artistic duo Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero plan to illuminate the
“structural minimalism and transparency” of the house in a way that would offer a new perspective of the modern
masterpiece.

Scottish Charity Aims to Resurrect Brutalist Icon - Cardross - Scotland - United Kingdom
The Scottish arts charity NVA is looking for an architect to carry out the restoration of St Peter’s Seminary in
Cardross, designed by Gillespie, Kidd & Coia in 1966. The building is an icon of post war brutalism; the Grade-A
listed structure was voted as the best modern building in Scotland by readers of Prospect Magazine in 2005, and
is likely to feature heavily in Scotland’s show at the 2014 Venice Biennale. However despite this adoration, the
building had a very short functional life and has been in a state of ruin ever since it was abandoned in the 1980s.

A new study by researchers at NASA and the University of California, Irvine, finds a rapidly melting section of
the West Antarctic Ice Sheet appears to be in an irreversible state of decline, with nothing to stop the glaciers in
this area from melting into the sea.
The study presents multiple lines of evidence, incorporating 40 years of observations that indicate the glaciers in
the Amundsen Sea sector of West Antarctica "have passed the point of no return," according to glaciologist and
lead author Eric Rignot, of UC Irvine and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California. The new study has been accepted
for publication in the journal Geophysical Research Letters…

From the architect. Newcastle Museum consists of a series of revitalised “turn of the
Century” industrial brick railway workshop buildings – Blacksmith’s and Wheel Shop
(1880), Locomotive Boiler Shop (1887), and New Erecting Shop (1920) located within
the urban waterfront regeneration precinct of Honeysuckle. The challenge was to
provide a linkage element to not only create a new sense of identity for the heritage structures and to provide an visually and physically
accessible entrance to the three buildings, but to also upgrade them to accommodate a national standard museum and associated support
requirements, without diminishing the integrity of the existing fabric.

Qatar fire station to be transformed into art centre
A former fire station in Doha is due to be transformed into a space for artist residencies and exhibitions, the
Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) announced at a press conference on Wednesday, 5 March. The building, which
is being redesigned by the Qatari architect Ibrahim Al Jaidah, will include 24 studios and a 700 sq. m gallery,
housed in the old garage, to be used by artists participating in the programme as well as the local community.
“The gallery space will support local artists whether in residence or not. It will allow for cultural dialogue and
exchange between artists living in Qatar and the rest of the world,” said Noor Abuissa, an assistant curator at the QMA.

Competitions - UK Museum of the Year Shortlist Announced
The Art Fund recently announced the six museums on the UK’s 2014 Museum of the Year shortlist, its annual award for the
outstanding museum of the year. The award celebrates every aspect of what makes a museum successful, but this year the list

Awards - Orhan Pamuk's Museum of Innocence named the 2014 European Museum of the Year - Turkey
The writer Orhan Pamuk's Museum of Innocence has been named the European Museum of the Year in a
ceremony held in Tallinn at the weekend. Pamuk has dedicated the prize to the miners who were killed last week
in an explosion in Soma, Turkish media reports.
When the museum opened in April 2012, Andrew Finkel, The Art Newspaper's Istanbul-based correspondent,
visited and met its founder.
The museum advertised as the first to be inspired by a novel opened its doors in the back streets of Istanbul... It looks like a museum, feels like
a museum and is open late on Fridays and closed on Mondays. Yet the first question posed by the Museum of Innocence, created by the Nobel
Prize-winning author Orhan Pamuk, is whether it really is a museum at all, and not an infinitely elaborate installation—an extended conceit of
art imitating art, albeit one with a gift shop that sells posters and fridge magnets…

The report lists examples of cooperation and new initiatives in the Dutch museum sector. It is important in times of economic
uncertainty to continue to deliver a top-quality museum experience. Moreover, it is important that museums show society what
they are doing and what they are achieving for the common good. One way to do so is to form partnerships - whether between museums or with
organisations outside the museum or even cultural sectors.

UNESCO leads ‘Climate and Water’ session at the World Mountain Forum, Cusco, Peru
The World Mountain Forum (WMF) will be held from 22 to 25 May 2014 in Cusco, Peru, to promote sustainable
mountain development (SMD). The forum, organized by the Government of Peru, is an initiative of the Mountain
Partnership, whose members include UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme (IHP) and several other
institutions worldwide. It will contibute to the preparation of the next Climate Summit, COP20.
During the event UNESCO will lead a session on ‘Climate and Water’, allowing scientists, water managers and
decision-makers, among others, to share experiences and recommendations on how to deal with climate change impacts on water resources in
mountain areas.

Scottish Charity Aims to Resurrect Brutalist Icon - Cardross - Scotland - United Kingdom
The Scottish arts charity NVA is looking for an architect to carry out the restoration of St Peter’s Seminary in
Cardross, designed by Gillespie, Kidd & Coia in 1966. The building is an icon of post war brutalism; the Grade-A
listed structure was voted as the best modern building in Scotland by readers of Prospect Magazine in 2005, and
is likely to feature heavily in Scotland’s show at the 2014 Venice Biennale. However despite this adoration, the
building had a very short functional life and has been in a state of ruin ever since it was abandoned in the 1980s.

In a world dominated by images, the need to visualize and reconstruct these monuments is indispensable. Since the
end of the 20th Century, the graphic representation of old buildings has expanded dramatically. This is due to the
development of audiovisual media and the advance of new technologies.
Restitution (Reconstruction) is “a representation by drawing or a model of the alleged appearance of a mutilated or
destroyed building. It is often hypothetical construct a building or part of a vanished building, but also the recovery of an alleged original state.”

The universities of the Department of Tolima in Colombia do not have an established academic tradition for either design or
architectural restoration. In fact, it is only since 2006 that the University of Ibagué has offered the first institutional summer
course in restoration. This course has allowed the introduction and the development of different important themes for the
formation of architects: architectural design, history of architecture and conservation projects for the preservation of cultural
patrimony. This papers illustrates two international academic experiences that can demonstrate the importance of the study of
design for restoration projects.

News - Sharks are not 'living fossils': study
Modern sharks are not "living fossil" replicas of their prehistoric ancestors but have evolved significantly over
millions of years to develop their hallmark design, a consensus-busting study said Wednesday. The newly discovered
fossil skull of a shark-like ancestor of all jawed vertebrates adds to evidence that a bony skeleton, not a
cartilaginous one, was the prototype. The ancestor, which lived in the Palaeozoic era some 325 million years ago,
turns out to have had characteristics of fish with cartilaginous skeletons, like sharks, and of bony ones like salmon
and tuna, a reasearch team wrote in the journal Nature.

Eocasea martini: Paleontologists discover land herbivores' earliest ancestor
Paleontologists unearthed the oldest ancestor of land-dwelling herbivores with the discovery of a 300-million-yearold skeleton, shedding light onto plant eaters' emergence on land, a study said Wednesday. A partial fossil of the
animal, called Eocasea martini, is "the first link between carnivores and herbivores, the transition," Robert Reisz, the
article's principal author and professor at Canada's University of Toronto Mississauga, told AFP. Eocasea was a
carnivore, but had certain skeletal features that indicate it was a close relative of herbivores, Reisz said.

Crecen en la Argentina los sitios declarados como Patrimonio de la Humanidad
Desde 1981 la Argentina ostenta sitios que fueron reconocidos por la Unesco como patrimonios mundiales. Se
trata de parques nacionales, refugios de arte rupestre, ruinas coloniales y albergues de una exclusiva
biodiversidad. El itinerario se extiende de norte a sur y suma también al tango más arrabalero de Buenos Aires.
La propuesta incluye desde paseos culturales, arqueológicos e históricos, hasta las aventuras más extremas
para los que buscan unas vacaciones repletas de desafíos. El circuito recorre casi todo el territorio nacional y
convoca al descubrimiento de selvas tropicales, parques nacionales, grandes escenarios de hielo, ruinas de la época colonial, rastros de
milenarios dinosaurios y cerros multicolores.

Las esferas precolombinas de Costa Rica, candidatas a patrimonio mundial
Decenas de esferas de piedra artísticas, características de las sociedades cacicales precolombinas en el sur
de Costa Rica, han quedado al borde de entrar en la categoría de patrimonio mundial dela humanidad. El
órgano asesor de la Organización de Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (Unesco) ha
recomendado el otorgamiento de la declaratoria para cuatro sitios arqueológicos donde yacen estos
monumentos de hasta una tonelada, cuyos métodos de fabricación aún son un misterio para los

El pasado martes 29 de abril, tuvo lugar en el salón del actos del Centro Regional de Profesores (CERP)
Suroeste, la jornada «Sitios de Memoria de la Esclavitud» Colonia del Sacramento.
El encuentro propuso reflexionar sobre los sitios de memoria de la población afrouruguaya entendidos
como espacios significativos que posibilitan visibilizar y objetivar la problemática de la esclavitud y sus
consecuencias.

The World Heritage Committee will consider the inscription of 40 sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List when it
meets in Doha (Qatar) from 15 to 25 June under the chair of Sheikha Al Mayassa Bint Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani.
Sites to be considered include five that are extensions to sites already on the List. The state of conservation of
existing World Heritage sites will also be reviewed during the session…
