¡adelante! …. A historic date 11 December 2009; this day has now gone down in the history of Andalusian aeronautics and will remain fresh in the sector’s memory at least for the next few years. At 14:02 the A400M touched down at Seville Airport after a highly satisfactory maiden flight lasting 3 hours and 47 minutes. This marks the definitive realisation of a dream which for a time sceptics had predicted was destined to remain a utopian dream. However, this was not the case, among other things because the A400M project was never really under threat and the parties involved were always willing to bring it to fruition. Naturally, difficulties emerged along the way. However, good things don’t come easy and with the first flight of the new military airlifter by Airbus Military many of the technical and organisational issues have now been cleared up. Needless to say, the Andalusian aeronautical sector should be proud of itself, for the manufacture of this aircraft will signify a hugely important boost for our industry. However, it would be a glaring error to start shouting from the rooftops. First of all, because the programme’s financing difficulties continue to exist and it is essential to clear this issue up. And secondly, because our greatest error would be to rest on our laurels when we consider that we have a long road in front of us in order to improve the competitive position of Andalusian companies. The maiden flight of the A400M, and all it signifies in terms of fulfilled dreams and commitments to job assignments for our industry, should rather be seen as a wake-up call to continue advancing in terms of innovation, production and application of knowledge, business collaboration, generation of greater added value, consolidation of segments such as structures and materials and specialisation in other new fields such as avionics and on-board systems. It is therefore a time to be ambitious and continue to strive for more, taking advantage of the workload which the A400M assures us not to "salvage" the years to come, but rather to lay the foundations for a future characterised by solidity and expansion, cooperation and a commitment to training and quality, specialisation, innovation and technological advances. The Government approves the new plan for the aeronautical sector, with funding of more than 3,700 million euros In early November the Council of Ministers approved the new strategic plan for the aeronautical sector (PESA) for the period from 2010 to 2014, which contemplates public funding of 3,732 million euros to make investments already contemplated in all segments of the sector. The Government has decided to develop a new plan to replace the 2008-2016 plan launched two years ago, with the aim of increasing the growth of the Spanish aeronautical industry in light of the current economic situation so as to provide a response to the current market and ensure that this industry "continues to be competitive". The Government is also seeking to reinforce the supply chain of the sector and the consolidation of subcontractors in order to attract workloads and improve the competitiveness of the auxiliary industry. These actions are aimed in particular at strengthening the companies which make up 95% of the aeronautical industry in Spain: small and medium-sized businesses which are Tier 1 subcontractors for the major manufacturers or which form part of auxiliary industry. The main source of financial support will come from the purchasing programme of the Ministry of Defence, which is prefinanced by the Ministry of Industry. It will seek to keep up the rhythm of purchases in order to partly make up for the fall in demand, consisting of a payment of 2,490 million euros over the next five years. This will mainly be spent on the programmes for the Eurofighter, the A400M and the NH90 Helicopter. At a commercial level, this financing benefits the Spanish affi- A+A liates of EADS, Airbus and Eurocopter and also ITP. In the State Budgets for 2010, the Ministry of Industry set aside 950.9 million euros to support technological innovation in the area of defence. A novelty of the new plan is a specific provision for the aeronautical sector within the Programme for the competitiveness of strategic sectors, with a value of 285 million euros in interestfree loans with a term of 15 years, including a grace period of five years. The industry will also have access to loans of this type under the reindustrialisation programme, the aim of which is to finance the start-up of new industrial initiatives or products. In this case, the sector can benefit from up to 152 million euros in the period contemplated. In order to support the auxiliary industry and promote its concentration so as to enhance its commercial weight, the Government will provide up to 150 million euros through the National Innovation Enterprise (Enisa) in the form of participatory loans, guarantees, contributions of capital and shares in risk capital companies. This boost for the aeronautical sector also includes specific financial backing for the Spanish affiliate of Airbus. The Council of Ministers approved a Royal Decree on Friday which regulates the direct assignment of 278 million euros of repayable advances in the form of interest-bearing loans to be applied by the company for the development of its new A350 XWB aircraft between 2009 and 2015. The Government will also offer Airbus 112 million euros for other projects in 2013 and 2014. A+A Embraer receives the first components of the Phenom 100 from Alestis The Minister of Innovation, Science and Enterprise of the Andalusian Regional Government, Martin Soler, announced that the Brazilian aeronautical company Embraer has now begun to receive the first parts for the Phenom 100 made by the Andalusian consortium Alestis Aerospace “in accordance with the schedule established". The Minister explained that the Brazilian manufacturer has already certified the new Alestis facilities in Brazil, which enabled commencement in September of the manufacture of the parts for the horizontal and vertical tail plane, the flaps and part of the rear fuselage, which are being certified by Embraer upon delivery. The Phenom 100 represents a turnover of 350 million euros over 10 years for Alestis. Soler also stated that in late 2009 and early 2010 the manufacture of assembly parts will begin, a process which will directly involve Andalusian auxiliary companies which subcontract the manufacture of machining for the final assembly of the parts at Alestis Brazil, the most important composites plant in Latin America involving an investment of US$15 million. Alestis has a portfolio worth more than 2,000 million euros a year, for in addition to the contracts for the manufacture of various packages for Embraer’s Phenom 100, a similar contract has also been signed for the Phenom 300 valued at US$100 million and for which the first deliveries will be made in February of 2010. The Andalusian consortium also has contracts to manufacture the belly fairing and the tail cone of the A350, which will represent a turnover of 1,700 million euros. Soler confirmed that the Andalusian consortium is complying with "the commitments accepted" and that, without the creation of Alestis “Andalusia would not have the capacity to attract the programmes currently being developed". Along these lines, Mr Soler indicated that for the time being new openings of facilities are not contemplated for Alestis and that "significant progress has been made" with the incorporation of new Andalusian enterprises in the consortium. Now the time has come to analyse the details of the share package offer at the current market price in order to determine the share percentage. Mr Soler confirmed that for the time being the savings banks and the IDEA Agency "will continue with the majority package". The Chilean affiliate of the Andalusian aeronautical group Faasa has been awarded the contract for the provision of personnel transport and fire fighting services with helicopters, under which the company will provide the Chilean government with three helicopters over the next two years equipped with the resources necessary to carry out firefighter transport and water dumping activities and which will carry out their operations mainly in the regions of Valparaíso, Bio-Bio and Maule. The contract is expected to generate returns in excess of 2 million euros over the two-year term and includes a minimum contract of 100 days per helicopter and year and a package of 120 flight hours per base and year. The award of this contract follows various others which Faasa Chile currently has with the leading timber companies of this Andean country. As a result the coming year will involve unprecedented deployment by this aeronautical company, providing a total of 17 aerial aircraft (8 planes and 9 helicopters) as well as the reserve aerial fleet, which carries out other types of jobs such as transport of persons and external loads. This important growth confirms the consolidation of the Andalusian company in this South American country, where in only four years it has quadrupled the aerial resources available for fire fighting activities, positioning it among the three leading suppliers in the country with a market share in excess of 30%. Solely in relation to its fire fighting activities Faasa Chile expects earnings of over 5 million euros for the period from 2009-2010. In recent years, the South American division has notably increased its turnover, reaching 4.2 million euros in 2008 and with an expected turnover of 7 million euros for 2009. The company in Chile employs more than 50 professionals which include pilots, maintenance technicians and other administrative and commercial staff, along with Spanish professionals (pilots and technicians) who are present to support the human resources on site. >> 27 the A400M “is not viable”, and called for an additional effort on the part of government customers “to the benefit of all parties”. Meanwhile, the CEO of EADS Louis Gallois also recognised the prejudice to customers deriving from the accumulated delays of the A400M, although he also asked for a "collective effort" for a project which among other things is "an important tool for the creation of jobs". In fact, the French Defence Minister, Hervé Morin, affirmed after witnessing the first flight that he hopes to reach a financing agreement for the programme with these countries "in the next two months", while on the same day the COO of Airbus Fabrice Berger stated in an interview with the daily newspaper La Tribune that the seven states participating in the programme will have to assume a "significant" increase in the price. Model of the 21st century The maiden flight of the A400M marks the beginning of a series of test campaigns which will involve 3,700 flight hours, to be carried out by a fleet of five aircraft from now until its entry into service at the end of 2012, when the first delivery to the French Air Force will be made. In the first half of 2010 the MSN 2 and the MSN 3 will join the MSN 1; the MSN 4 will follow at the end of the year. In 2011 a fifth aircraft will join the programme. These tests will be followed by additional flights for military purposes. The A400M will receive both civil certification by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and military certification and qualification. Airbus and Airbus Military have drawn on decades of technical experience in the construction of commercial aircraft to produce the world’s most modern airlifter, capable of participating in both strategic and tactical operations. Although in reality it is a tactical aircraft capable of landing on soft, rough and short runways to supply equipment and troops close to where they are required, it can fly at the same altitudes as jets and at a comparable cruising speed. Thanks to the latest technology it can fly higher, faster and further than its predecessors, without losing any of its manoeuvrability or capacity at low speeds on short, soft or unpaved runways. >> Major media presence for the maiden flight The expectations generated by the first flight of the A400M, an aircraft manufacture programme which has been closely followed by the European and international aeronautical industry and in particular by the countries involved in the first orders, resulted in an enormous media presence at the facilities of the Airbus Military plant at San Pablo airport, Seville. More than 300 journalists mainly from France and the United Kingdom, in addition to the Spanish media, were accredited to cover this event, some of whom offered live interviews, connections and news reports from the set located right on the factory runway. The company also provided an extensive press centre equipped with computers and Internet to facilitate the work of these journalists and offered a press conference by the head of flight tests, Fernando Alonso, to inform regarding the details of the take-off and the first in-flight tests of the A-400M. In addition, to bring the citizens of the Andalusian capital closer to this historic event the Seville City Council offered a live transmission of the progress of the maiden flight on three giant screens via local television at various points of the city, including Seville’s Higher School of Engineering. In addition, the workers of the factory at Tablada together with other Airbus and EADS employees watched a live transmission of the flight via satellite. Social networks on the Internet were another source of information to keep up-to-date with all the details of the maiden flight of the A400M. A+A It is accordingly ideal for carrying out tactical and strategic/logistical missions such aerial refuelling and can offload fuel to both fighter planes and helicopters at the velocity and altitude desired. Its cargo compartment is designed specifically to carry the enormous amount of equipment necessary nowadays to carry out both military and humanitarian missions and assistance for natural disasters, enabling these materials to be very rapidly transported to the places where there are needed. The A400M is also equipped with the same proven “fly-by-wire” technology used with great success on the Airbus airliner family, and an advanced cockpit based on that of the A380. The carbonfibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) wings and other large structures grant the aircraft weight and strength advantages and reduce the risk of corrosion. Designed to be extremely reliable and enormously resistant, the A400M is a multipurpose aircraft which can single-handedly do the job of three of the different models currently in service. This signifies a reduction in the size of fleets and a reduced investment by operators. Capable of doing more with less, the A400M is the most economic, efficient and versatile military airlifter ever created, equipped with truly unique features. The maiden flight of the A400M in Andalusian skies will enter the annals of Andalusian, Spanish and International aeronautics. It will also be remembered for the very complicated process it entailed due to the magnitude and complexity of what is a unique project for the aeronautical industry. The following is more than just an overview of the programme for a new military airlifter. For Andalusia, and especially Seville, it is the story of a collective dream which had its origins over a decade ago; the story of a dream come true. A continuación destacamos los hitos más importantes: 31 T he events of last 11 December at the San Pablo Plant in Seville will go down in the annals of Andalusian, Spanish and European aeronautical history. However, the road of the A400M programme, which has had its final stretch in Andalusia, has been long and tortuous indeed. It was a difficult process due to the technical complexities and delays resulting from the development of this pioneer aircraft for the provision of military transport and support for aerial forces, which was further complicated by the resulting financing difficulties of a highly ambitious project in technical terms, even for the aeronautical industry. The first flight of the A400M was only a dream 10 years ago. Ten years of highlights and rumours regarding the programme, of which we have selected the following milestones: Diciembre 1999 December 1999 El Gobierno español firma la integración de la compañía nacional CASA en el nuevo consorcio aeronáutico, espacial y de defensa europeo EADS, junto a la alemana DASA y la francesa Aeroespatiale-Matra. The Spanish government signs the agreement for the integration of the Spanish company CASA in the new European aeronautical, aerospace and defence consortium EADS, together with the German company DASA and the French firm Aeroespatiale-Matra. At that time Andalusia, and more specifically its capital, Seville, was already being considered as the site of the project for the new A400M military airlifter, the most advanced aircraft of its kind. Official programme Kick-off for the A400M military airlifter following the signing of the construction agreement in the German city of Bonn between the Air Forces of France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, the United Kingdom, Turkey and Luxembourg and the Airbus company. These nations agreed to purchase a total of 180 aircraft in an initial order with a value of 20,000 million euros. They were later joined by Malaysia and South Africa. The works begin for the Final Assembly Line (FAL) of the A400M on the site of the EADS plant at San Pablo, Seville, next to the airport of the Andalusian capital. The facilities involve an investment of over 600 million euros and are expected to be completed in two years in order to begin manufacturing the aircraft. The Andalusian aeronautical industry has played an important role in the development of the A400M Programme, a reflection of the work capacity and technology which companies in the sector currently possess in our region. It also opens up new opportunities for future participation in new projects with the world’s leading aircraft manufacturers. “El éxito del primer vuelo del A400M supone además de un hito que nos enorgullece en la medida en que T he first flight of the A400M military airlifter has been very well received by the Andalusian aeronautical sector, one of the key participants in the programme, and is a tribute to the importance of international collaboration in major industrial projects in the field of aeronautics. The manufacture of the A400M is the result of cooperation between many different European countries, with its development and production involving centres and factories from all over the continent, including Hamburg (Germany), Getafe (Spain), Filton (United Kingdom), Ankara (Turkey), Saint Nazaire (France), Bremen (Germany), Cádiz and Seville (Spain). Nonetheless, the role of Spanish industries and Andalusian participation in what is one of the largest projects at an international level in recent years is particularly relevant. As a consequence, our region’s aeronautical industry has acquired fundamental importance not only due to the workload it has assumed under the project, with more than half of the turnover subcontracted by Airbus Military, but also because for the first time in its aeronautical history a Final Assembly Line (FAL) has been located in its territory. This has placed Andalusia on the world aeronautical map and highlights the work capacity and technology which Andalusian firms in the sector currently have at their disposal, positioning them at the cutting edge of innovation and engineering for major aeronautical projects. Boost for the sector The A400M has signified a definitive boost for firms in the Andalusian aeronautical sector and has placed the region in a strategic position, opening up new future possibilities for job assignments and creation of employment for Andalusian industry through new projects with the world’s leading aircraft manufacturers. “The A400M’s first flight is a milestone which is a source of pride in that we have contributed to its success, A+A 38 EMPRESAS A+A hemos contribuido al mismo, un reconocimiento y un premio a la excelencia por el esfuerzo y el trabajo realizado, como parte del ambicioso proyecto aeronáutico asumido por nuestra comunidad. A+A and also comprises recognition and just reward for the excellence of the efforts made as part of this ambitious aeronautical project assumed by our region. At the same time, it has acted as a showcase for Andalusian firms such as MDU in the military aeronautics arena, as well as pinpointing Andalusia as a leader in the field of innovation and development”, highlighted Ramón Sánchez Garduño, CEO of the IUD Group (MDU). The delight following the definitive resumption of the programme and the first flight of the A400M is shared by all Andalusian businesses. “The success of the A400M’s maiden flight is a great satisfaction for everyone and is the culmination of years of uncertainty and also hopes which we expect will generate important job assignments for Andalusian industry in the years to come”, stated José Cañas, Professor of the University of Seville and one of the founders of TEAMS. Meanwhile, Rafael Romero, director of the Aeronautics division of Ghenova, affirmed that “as is the case of the rest of the Andalusian auxiliary industry, the A400M has signified a major opportunity for our company. Despite the accumulated delays of the programme, which have slowed down the expansion of the Andalusian industrial network, there can be no doubt that the choice of Seville as the site of the FAL and subsequent delivery of the aircraft and the future pilot training centre will ensure a workload over the coming years which will contribute to strengthen existing industrial networks and the creation of new companies to complement the current portfolio of services. At the same time, the A400M will keep Seville and Andalusia on the world aeronautical map on a permanent basis”. “Whichever way you look at it, the first flight of the A400M is a dream come true for all the Andalusian companies which, as is the case of Galvatec, have made a strong commitment to this highly competitive and complicated sector. The location of an Airbus FAL in Seville also acts as an international showcase for all the firms in the auxiliary industry, and is encouraging major aeronautical manufacturers to discover and make use of our capacities. The A400M is currently very good news for the entire Andalusian aeronautical sector, but over time it may in hindsight become the defining moment bringing about the radical change EMPRESAS A+A puede convertirse, echando la vista atrás, en el hito que impulsó el cambio radical que necesitábamos para garantizar el futuro de nuestra industria. This will not be possible without the involvement of various businesses, entities and workers, but at least we have this incredible opportunity before us which we cannot nor should not allow to escape. And opportunities like this do not come by every day”, assured Francisco de la Vega, director of Galvatec. Andalusian participation As is evident from the work carried out by Andalusian firms in the aeronautical sector, our region has played a key role in the development of the A400M programme. The horizontal tail plane for the aircraft is manufactured here in Andalusia in the EADS-CASA plant at Tablada, Seville. This component is wholly assembled in Spain and is manufactured using 90% carbon fiber and 10% light metals, mainly aluminium and titanium. The factory at Tablada is also responsible for manufacturing part of the components using high-speed machining technology, although the majority of the parts of the HTP come from different companies and places, including Andalusian firms such as Sacesa (carbon fiber parts of the rudder), Easy Industrial Solutions (also supplying fiber), Airgrup (ducting), EADS-CASA San Pablo (wiring harnesses), and Meupe Consur and Alestis (SK10). Assembly and installation of the systems is carried out in the factory at Tablada. In addition, the aircraft’s flap fairings are made wholly from carbon fiber using different production technology, including fiber placement, a cutting-edge process for the manufacture of composite materials. The EADS-CASA factory in the Bay of Cádiz which is responsible for its manufacture is a leader in this field. These fairings incorporate other metallic elements manufactured by the factories of EADS-CASA and different Andalusian subcontractors such as Galvatec. Andalusia also participates in the cowlings for the A400M. More specifically, the Tablada factory is responsible for making complex machined parts out of titanium, while the factory A+A 40 EMPRESAS A+A realiza piezas de chapa. The A400M has resulted in Andalusia being the site of a final assembly line (FAL) for the first time ever of a programme by one of the aeronautical industry’s leading manufacturers, the European consortium EADS through its affiliate Airbus Military EMPRESAS A+A in the Bay of Cádiz produces sheet metal. The manufacture of these cowlings also involves the collaboration of Alestis, which produces sandwich panels of carbon fiber, and the firms Sevilla Control and Airgrup in relation to machined and welded parts. Other companies also participate in the A400M programme as subcontractors, such as ELIMCO (automatic testing systems and technical and logistics support services for the FAL), Navair (study and design of the production tooling for the FAL and manufacture of the anti-missile systems of the A400M), Aertec (industrial and logistics organisation for the FAL, external logistics centre and principal supplier of Zone type Aircraft Interface Modules), MDU (airworthiness systems, automatic testing systems and ground tests), Ghenova (design of the cargo bay floor and certification of the wings), CESA (landing gear and cargo ramp and door systems), Inespasa (design, manufacture and assembly of the static wing test unit), TADA (manufacture, surface treatment and assembly of subassemblies) and TEAMS (systems for testing meshing of wiring harnesses). The FAL of the A400M The A400M has resulted in Andalusia being the site of a final assembly line (FAL) for the first time ever of a programme by one of the aeronautical industry’s leading manufacturers, the European consortium EADS through its affiliate Airbus Military. The FAL for the A400M is located next to the EADS Plant at San Pablo in Seville and has a total surface area of 145,000 square metres on a plot measuring 600,000 square metres. It has involved an investment of over 600 million euros. This plant has a main hangar for the assembly of the aircraft measuring 30,000 square metres, and five other complementary hangars. It can house up to 10 aircraft under construction. The installation of this first FAL in Andalusia has made the region the third most important aeronautical cluster in Europe, only behind Toulouse (France) and Hamburg (Germany). A factory of this nature brings with it important job creation opportunities, as well as the establishment in the territory of major aeronautical services and systems companies to support the final assembly line, which also tend to subcontract services to local auxiliary companies. The FAL has also brought with it another major aeronautical project: The A400M Pilot Training Centre. This centre, which will be managed by EADS, started out as a means of providing basic training regarding the new aircraft for future pilots of the military airlifter, although the project has ended up extending its role to act as a training centre for pilots and crew of the aircraft. Although it is still being developed (it is expected to start functioning over the course of 2010) this centre will be the most advanced in Europe in its category, equipped with the latest flight simulation technology and an R+D area which will work on the development of new training tools to ensure it keeps up with developments in the field. In addition to all of the above, Andalusian firms in the aeronautical sector are confident that the success of the first flight of the A400M will provide the definitive impulse for the extension of the Andalusian Aerospace Technology Park, Aeropolis, strategically located next to the FAL, the Airbus Military factory and Seville’s San Pablo Airport. Aeropolis currently has a total surface area of 580,000 square metres, although plans have been made to double this area to accommodate new companies in the sector and others linked with the Andalusian auxiliary industry. A+A The Depla Project will use hybrids of composite materials to meet the different needs of aircraft, crew and passenger protection from the impact of birds, ice, armed attacks or landings on unprepared terrain, with a resulting saving in terms of both weight and costs. A irbus Military has recently initiated an R+D+i project with the financing of the Andalusian Technological Corporation (CTA) to develop a new, lighter system using composite materials for the protection of aircraft and passengers from the impact of ice, stones, shards of metal from the turbine or engine, birds or landings on unprepared terrain. It will also encompass the manufacture of the protected parts, from their conception through to the actual manufacturing process, and the application of these techniques to land-based vehicles as well. Entitled Depla (Development of Light Protection for Aviation), the project will be carried out from 2009 through to 2012, mainly at the Andalusian centres of Airbus Military at Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz) and San Pablo (Seville), and includes funding of 1.4 million euros from CTA. Aircraft structures and systems need to be protected from certain situations and potential damage which may arise due to incidents such as explosions of certain components or systems of the aircraft itself and external factors such as the impact of stones or birds. In the case of military transport these needs are even more demanding as it is also necessary to protect aircraft and their crew from more aggressive impacts, such as armed attacks from the ground or air. The product which Airbus Military plans on developing through this project must meet the requirements of personal protection (guaranteeing the safety of the occupants), improvement of features (minimum weight penalisation in order to optimise the payload), viability (technological solutions which result in applications which may be industrially developed with an admissible cost) and performance in extreme situations (guaranteed performance in desert zones, zones with high levels of saline corrosion, etc). The ultimate aim of the project is accordingly to achieve technological solutions which improve aircraft protection from the threats indicated above, but without any penalty in terms of the aircraft's features and the end cost. This project involves the participation of three research groups from the University of Cádiz (Corrosion and Protection), Jaén and Córdoba (Biosahe Group) and Seville (Elasticity and Resistance of Materials), along with the collaboration of the companies IDEC and Ghenova. The engineering and tooling is also expected to be subcontracted to Andalusian auxiliary companies. Last 26 November the project launch was presented to all the participants at the Tecnobahía Technology Park in Cádiz. Airbus Military hopes to obtain patentable results from the project, although the number and scope of the patents will not be defined until 2011. It will also support collaborating research groups to generate their own patents for techniques and methods developed during the course of the project. New materials The new product will consist of an improved aerostructure capable of providing suitable protection from possible impacts, ranging from those of lesser intensity (bird impacts) through to those with greater risk (ballistic impact) and including aerial waves (seismic waves, heat radiation, crater formation), abrasion and erosion. The protective element must be capable of integration with traditional structural elements, even forming part of the same using new hybrid concepts. Airbus Military will study the possibility of using UHMW PE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene), which results in a more resilient material with extraordinary resistance to impacts, as well as good protection against corrosion and chemical agents, low moisture absorption, low coefficient of friction and very high resistance to abrasion. Nonetheless, it must be borne in mind that improvements to the protection capacities of a structure are inextricably linked with their capacity for integration into the same; in other words, it must be >> A+A 44 Tecnología A+A al cumplimiento global esperado del avión. Además, las potencia>> A+A integrated into the structural concept of the aircraft, providing it with superior properties but also contributing in an efficient manner to its general performance. Accordingly, one of the keys to success will be to identify solutions involving hybrids of different materials. The materials to be taken into account under the project include carbon fibres of different types, fibreglass, aramid fibres, UHMW PE and other types of fibres such has PBO. Terrorist threats Apart from the protection needs defined in current civil regulations (mainly the American FAA Regulations and the European EASA Regulations), certification authorities are requiring changes in designs due to the new threat of terrorist attacks and to prevent intrusions in the cockpit and provide greater protection for the crew. These new requirements will require the protection and shielding of certain sections of the cockpit, passenger area and systems, as well as the design of specific zones which support certain explosions without catastrophic failure of the aircraft. 45 locking and opening systems for cockpit doors to prevent intrusions of unauthorised persons. In addition, the potential protection for doors, partitions, walls, etc consists of steel plating with good ballistic protection but with a very heavy weight, giving rise to problems of excess weight for aircraft, problems with the handling of certain elements such as doors due to their weight and even problems of corrosion and rusting as these are interior elements without access and in zones with frequent use of liquids. For all these reasons, the need exists to search for lighter alternative materials with good protection against bullet impacts and expansive waves of explosions and possible additional use as standard protection against ice, birds, stones, etc. All military programmes identify a series of requirements as to vulnerability to certain threats and the need for a series of protective measures. In order to reduce the specific weight of this protection, military airlifters tend to be equipped with shielding using materials which are more effective than steel, such as ceramic materials or aramid fibre (Kevlar). Even so, the weight of these features with current protection materials is notable: for example, the weight of the shielding for the cockpit and the payload operator is around 350 kilos for a C-295. In addition, this weight is concentrated in specific areas, resulting in problems of localised overloading and for the centre of gravity. In addition, military aircraft and particularly airlifters need to be prepared for use on inadequately paved runways below civil standards and even fields with practically no preparation at all. The possibilities of abrasion and damage to the underbelly of the aircraft mean that the need for specific protection is generally very high. Accordingly, the need exists in the case of both civil and military aviation for the development and use of lighter protection and shielding than that which is currently used. A cutting edge project The DEPLA Project (Development of Light Protection for Aviation) by Airbus Military incorporates a highly innovative series of technological developments. The protection of aircraft from the wide range of possible aggressions and impacts, ranging from birds through to armed attacks, has a long way to go in terms of research and development. That is why the DEPLA Project by Airbus Military is at the cutting edge of innovation in the area of protection of lives in the aeronautical sector. Among the most striking technological innovations of the project is the description of advanced light materials for protection, techniques for the manufacture of complex elements, simulation and description of the performance of these materials in the event of high and low energy impacts and assembly of aerostructures. The results of the project will be applicable to impact protection for civil aviation of any new design (A350, XWB, A+A A30X, GRA…) and for military airlifters of all sizes and ranges (FATM, customer versions of the A400M, refuelling aircraft based on the Airbus Military Boom system and A-330 and A310 aircraft). In addition, they may be applied to aircraft currently in use to substitute current ceramic protection and may also be applied to both civil and military land-based vehicles, such as police or patrol vehicles, armoured civil vehicles, high speed trains, etc. An estimated weight saving of 40% as opposed to current aramid fibre protection would in itself be very attractive for any user due to the benefits in terms of operating costs and gains in payload and range. The project fosters the generation of knowledge in Andalusia in what is a strategic area, and the network of enterprises and research groups which participate have the potential to develop into leaders in a field which may have extensions to civil applications related with personal protection and safety. Para una exitosa adecuación de estos A+A C ooperation and interoperability have emerged as key elements for Andalusian auxiliary industries and the aeronautical sector, an area which frequently involves distribution of different workloads for the manufacture of civil and military aircraft, and which in recent years has undergone considerable growth precisely due to the excellent capacity for work and coordination with other enterprises involved in the same project. However, there is much to be done yet, and so to further develop this aspect of major relevance for the continuous improvement of companies in the Andalusian aeronautical sector, the Hélice Foundation together with the company ISOIN has initiated its participation in the COIN research project under the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union. The main purpose of this project is to create a common platform to integrate the collaboration and interoperability services which will be developed under this initiative and which will have an effect upon different productive sectors of major importance in European industry. In order to successfully adapt these services to the sectors in question, the corresponding prototypes will be studied, 49 PROYECTOS A+A COIN: collaboration and interoperability for greater competitiveness in the Andalusian aeronautical sector The Hélice Foundation, together with the company ISOIN, is participating in a project under the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union which seeks to create a common platform of services to optimise cooperation and interoperability between companies in the aeronautical industry and to improve the competitiveness of the Andalusian business cluster. Esto permite estudiar y ser capaces designed and developed using the knowledge acquired to ensure that the end system is optimised to the maximum extent possible. These prototypes will provide CTI (Common Telecommunications Infrastructure) solutions for clusters such as the aerospace sector in the Lazio region (Rome), the automotive sector (ACS) in Slovenia and, in this case, the Andalusian aeronautical cluster. Although the COIN project was begun in 2008, the activities to demonstrate its services in the Andalusian aeronautical sector were initiated this year. The expected results of the project include different services which will be of major utility for the Andalusian aeronautical cluster, including the following: • Partner search: This service enables a study of business opportunities in real time, so that if the decision is made to opt for a job semantic searches can be made on the platform to identify the companies of the Andalusian aeronautical cluster which are best suited to form a partnership for the joint development of the project. This enables studies to be carried out and ensures that businesses are able to compete more efficiently to achieve the business opportunities on offer in the aeronautical sector. >> A+A A+A EMPRESAS CALIDAD A+A 55 Quality in the organisation of production by Airbus Military S afety is the origin of quality. Without the former the latter cannot exist. This is the basis for the definition of the parameters and mechanisms which Airbus Military establishes for its production processes and the chain of suppliers with which it collaborates, all with the aim of obtaining the quality standards which the company applies to its end products before delivery to the customer. It can therefore be said that these company standards of excellence have a double objective, the achievement of aircraft safety and customer satisfaction. Gonzalo Jiménez Mozo, Manager of Operations Quality for Airbus Military The regulations The foundations for quality are laid down in the regulations governing the aeronautical industry, as regulated by civil and military authorities. The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is the civil authority responsible for safety at a European level. Through the Spanish Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), this body is responsible for auditing the production plants of the company and its chain of suppliers. In the military field, meanwhile, it is the Department of Armaments and Material of the Ministry of Defence which is responsible for certifying safety standards. As in the case of the civil authorities, this Department carries out a yearly audit to check whether the company still qualifies for its certification. In addition, the Defence Ministry directly supervises our processes, products and chain of suppliers through teams which are present in each of our factories. A+A with during the different phases of an aircraft’s life cycle. The three certifications (EASA 21, EASA 145 and PECAL 2110) which are granted by these bodies and which the production department of Airbus Military currently possesses are an objective indication of the effectiveness of our quality control and management system. However, the requirements of these authorities for certification and recognition of the quality standards applied in the company solely establish minimum levels which must be met. But that is insufficient for a company such as Airbus Military, which seeks excellence in the end product delivered to the customer. For this reason, the company participated in a programme for the creation of minimum quality standards to regulate the production processes of the aeronautical sector. This was carried out more than ten years ago now, seeking through the application of these mechanisms to achieve customer satisfaction by delivering the product within the period agreed upon, with the required level of quality and within the budget established. The company does not settle for mere compliance with the minimum standards imposed by civil and military authorities but goes even further, implementing a Quality Management System based on the European EN9100 Standard which is the result of an agreement reached between various industries in the sector under the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG). This body was set up in 1998 at the initiative of the world’s main aircraft manufacturers (including CASA). It develops activities to improve the companies which are its members and their suppliers, pooling the knowledge and best practices of these enterprises. The result of this joint endeavour is the EN9100 (2002) Quality System, which is based on the well-known ISO 9000-2000 standard, with extension and adaptation to the characteristics and needs of the aeronautical sector. Airbus Military was one of the first companies in Europe to obtain this certification in 2002, the same year as EADS-CASA. Every year a quality certification entity audits Airbus Military and every three years a complete recertification is carried out of the company. Possession of this certification is a guarantee that our quality system meets the high standards of the sector and that our customers can be sure of our compliance with the quality standards imposed. In terms of the field of special processes (such as thermal treatments, surface treatments and composites, among others), the company and its suppliers are also governed by the NADCAP Programme, another initiative by the IAQG. The system and its application Airbus Military not only has the necessary quality certifications, it is regularly audited to ensure that its practices meet the requirements of these standards and that it keeps its certification up to date. However, that is only the start. What is the basis for our quality system and how is it applied in the company’s productive processes? The first link in this chain is the decisive commitment by the Management of the company to ensuring that it has the highest possible level of quality. This is reflected in the strategy to be applied and the yearly objectives to be met; in the resources used (infrastructures and equipment); in human resources specialising in the tasks to be carried out; in the procedures (from the General Quality Manual to Technical Instructions in Workshops); and in the organisation and its deployment in each function or process. All of the above is not just good intentions or merely ticking the boxes to ensure compliance with the minimum requirements of these standards. The company makes every effort to ensure that its products go beyond these minimum standards to achieve the maximum level of quality as an invariable defining feature of its products. That is why it dedicates a large part of its human resources to this area. In fact, one in ten internal employees in the production area of Airbus Military is involved in quality-related ac>> CALIDAD A+A industrias del sector en el seno del International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG, Grupo Internacional de Calidad Aeroespacial). These teams carry out a series of clearly defined tasks in each of our factories: product approval (for which they carry out top-level verification, tests and inspections, among other activities); liaisons with authorities; delivery of the product to customers (including an acceptance process, delivery documentation, etc); and promotion of continuous improvement through measurement and control of processes, participation in the adjustments to the same, etc. Within the production section of the company, two departments exist which provide support to all the factories: Quality Systems, which is responsible for internal audits, procedures and improvement projects; and Materials and Processes Control, which is responsible for laboratories, metrology, certification of the special processes mentioned above, non-destructive tests and the NADCAP programme, among other matters. The actual implementation of an effective quality management system is the result of coordination between the quality resources deployed in each productive area and these two central departments. >> A+A However, as is logical, quality is not the only result of having an organisation dedicated to controlling quality and verifying that it meets the levels required. By offering our customers quality excellence, the entire organisation is equipped with the material and human resources and procedures and applies the processes required to generate quality products and services. This is materialised in the form of strategies, improvement projects and yearly objectives set to obtain consolidated results in a process of constant improvement of the quality system and our customers’ perception of the same. The company is committed to a philosophy whereby all the decisions and actions of the organisation are aimed at obtaining quality excellence. To give an example, when installing a platform to support one of the components which is being built, the end quality of the component will also be linked to the best practices for the installation of this platform to avoid any imbalance, no matter how small this may be. The role of suppliers While the application of quality control systems to our own products is of utmost importance, the standards expected of our suppliers are equally relevant. Generally speaking, we require our suppliers to have a quality system with EN9100 certification. In situations where the packages subcontracted include special process tasks, we also expect them to have NADCAP certification from the IAQG. These conditions are necessary, although they are not enough in themselves. Based on these and the supervision we carry out of their products and services, a quality delegation level is also established. This will be higher or lower depending on the rating of the supplier according to a series of objective tests. The delegation may vary in its extent within a spectrum ranging from Delegated Quality, whereby the supplier sends products directly to our external or internal customers, through to the other extreme, where in specific or temporary situations an inspection is carried out of the product at the facilities of the supplier prior to making delivery. The company has a specific quality organisation for the evaluation and continuous supervision of its suppliers. With the aim of facilitating, supporting and improving the quality of the products of our collaborators, we also carry out training actions and other activities to foster their development. 59 Airbus Military was one of the first companies in Europe and the first in Spain to obtain the EN9100 Quality System certification -a reference in the international aerospace sector- in 2002, the same year as EADS-CASA Recent milestones The road to excellence is marked, among other good practices, by successes in the area of quality. Recent milestones achieved in this respect by Airbus Military include two particularly important achievements. One of these is the transfer last 12 November of the first prototype of the A400M from the final assembly line (FAL) of San Pablo Sur in Seville to the Flight Testing department. Last 11 December this aircraft successfully made its first flight. The other milestone is the completion of the conversion of the second MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport) for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) carried out for Qantas at its facilities in Brisbane (Australia), with the support of an on-site team from Airbus Military to carry out this new job at a distance of 17,000 kilometres from Spain. In July of 1936 the climate of deep political division which had marked Spain for more than a decade sparked an attempted coup d’état which, following its failure, inevitably led to a cruel and fratricidal war which lasted nearly three years and tore the country apart. Aviation played a crucial role in Andalusia and was the key enabling the rebels to consolidate themselves on the Peninsula. Tablada was the starting point for intervention by Italy and Germany. T he result of the elections on 16 February 1936, with the victory of the Socialist Popular Front coalition, led to the logical change of command at the Tablada Air Base in Seville. Lieutenant-Colonel Martínez Esteve, ex-member of the Elcano Patrol on the flight from Madrid to Manila ten years previously, took command of Squadron No. 2 and the Base itself. The aerial units at the Base were limited to the Group 22 Cooperation squadrons of Breguet XIXs (previously “Light Bombers”), which were reduced in number due to the transfer of one of the three squadrons to Madrid. The Southern Regional Fleet also included ten Ni-52 fighters from the former Group 12 of Granada in various states of repair and upkeep. Meanwhile, the Aero Club had four Monocoupe 90 light aircraft owned by members (a fifth was located in Malaga), four DH-60s owned by the Aero Club itself, an ASL Fiat, a Miles Falcon, a Fairchild and the C-19 of the Marquis of Pressa de las Torres. A nervy vigil On the afternoon of 17 July the uprising was initiated in Melilla and on that same night Lieutenant-Colonel Yagüe, then commander of the Army in Africa, occupied key points in Morocco despite the resistance offered by the Atalayón Hydroplane Base, the High Commission and the Samia Ramiel Aerodrome. In the Sahara, Cape Juby remained loyal to the Government and its aerial fleet— three Fokker FVIIs— received orders to transfer to Seville, where they arrived that same afternoon. However, as soon as the aircraft took off the aerodrome joined in the rebellion. Meanwhile, at 01:00 hours on the 18th of August at Tablada, Martínez Esteve received orders to prepare the bombs and fuel for three Fokker FVIIs of the LAPE (Spanish Postal Airlines). Confiscated by government order on the afternoon of the 17th, these were to join the aircraft of the Colonial Squadron from Cape Juby in Seville. The 2nd Squadron prepared 700 12 kg bombs. It was obvious that the Government was planning to bomb the rebels in Morocco and thereby quell the attempted coup. On the morning of that day, the F.VIIb planes of the Madrid-Seville line and the Seville-Canary Islands Line were already at the base. At around 5 p.m. in the afternoon the DC-2 ECEBB Sagitario arrived from Barajas, positioning itself between the control tower and the bomb hangar, in parallel opposite the doors at a distance of around 50 metres. Although it was late and despite the oppressive heat, when the crew disembarked they were surprised to find “all the heads and officials of Tablada in front of the barracks”. They were even more surprised to find that the Fokker located in the interior from the Canary Islands had flat tyres. 61 The sensation that something was not quite right grew when the mechanic Macías headed to the LAPE building and saw that the light aircraft of the Aero Club were lined up on the field in full sunlight and learned that they had been there since the previous night. Lying in the shade of the Larache mail barrack hut, Macías could also see various civil pilots of the Aero Club, including Flores Solís, Camino and Bay, seated as if waiting for something to happen. And things did indeed occur shortly afterward. Immobilised on the ground Captain Carlos Martínez Vara de Rey, a sympathiser of the rebels, makes a very early morning visit to the ‘mastermind’ behind the coup in Seville, Commander Cuesta Monereo, where he learns that General Queipo de Llano is in Huelva and plans on taking over the Seville garrison, but that he will not arrive until midday to give him time to fool the Huelva authorities. Vara de Rey returns to Tablada and, looking to gain time and with the assistance of various other accomplices—Salvador, Medina, the depot chief Scala and the master armourer Jorquera—, he gets his hands on as many bomb fuses as he can from the armoury, secretly transferring them to his room in the Official’s Pavilion. While a bombsight is being installed on the DC-2 and an improvised bay in the door to launch the bombs which were stored on the seats, Vara de Rey asks Corporal Romero for his rifle —Serrano de Pablo as Private Mellado calls him. He then approaches the LAPE plane with his car and goes down on one knee and shoots at the plane, hitting both wheels and perforating two engine cylinders. Por aquí pasará inicialmente el primer Ju-52/3m, incautado a Lufthansa el día 17 en Villa Cisneros —donde se le ordena aterrizar, para evitar que se encontrara en Gando con el De Havilland Dragon de Franco— con su tripulación y todavía con >> with no ammunition in his gun, runs to hide in the troop barracks with a bullet injury in the groin, hotly pursued by the pilots and mechanics of the DC-2 who in turn are under rifle fire from the rebellious officials who are shooting from the rail in front of the radio station. Two of them —the mechanics Mota and Macías—throw themselves to the ground and run amidst the bulls, which are alarmed by the noise, until they manage to escape, while Vara de Rey, who is being chased by the pilot Tonda and the radio operator Martínez Amat, among others, is captured by Tonda. Another of the rebels, Lieutenant Medina, then intervenes, pointing his gun at the pilot’s breast and forcing him to release Vara de Rey. At that time Martínez Esteve appears, who manages to calm things down, ordering Vara de Rey to be arrested and sending him to the Guardhouse, where he is attended to by the Doctor Captain Méndez León prior to his supposed transfer to Military Prison. He later orders his transfer to the Military Hospital to protect him from his fellow soldiers. Tablada changes hands Although Commander Martínez Esteve arrests Captain Aguilera and Captain Carrillo —who had presented themselves as Queipo’s emissaries — and Commander Azaola, who tries to convince him to go over to the other side, he refuses to obey the orders to bomb the Seville barracks already under rebel control “to avoid causing civilian injuries”. This indecisive attitude leads to the fall of the Base to the rebels: once they have taken control of the city and threaten to blow up the base, Esteve hands over command to Azaola and allows himself to be placed under arrest. In the meantime, a second DC-2 brings spare parts from Madrid to repair the aircraft damaged by Vara de Rey and place it back into service and a Puss Moth arrives piloted by Captain Rexach of the Aeronautics Department. The Douglas and one of the Fokkers take off to bomb Larache and return directly to Madrid, while the other Fokker is repaired just in time to escape with the LAPE staff: the pilots Gou and Xuclá, the engineer Lahera and the mechanics Mota and Macías, supposedly under fire from the machine guns and rifles of the rebels according to the latter, although this seems fairly unlikely. It is seven in the afternoon and the plane is flying over Seville. They still have time to see the troops marching through the Puerta Osario Gate with the tricolour flag at their head. From that time on, Tablada becomes the most important trump card for the uprising, which now has a privileged location from which to deploy the aircraft at its disposal and the best logistics facilities. Soon to arrive is the first Ju-52/3m seized from Lufthansa on the 17th at Villa Cisneros, where it is ordered to land so that it is not at Gando with Franco’s De Havilland Dragon. Lo pilota el capitán Carlos Haya, >> the 27th on their way to Tetouan. The next day they initiate the so-called ‘Aerial Bridge of the Strait’, with flights to Tablada and Jerez where the makeshift Zarandilla Camp is established near La Cartuja. This is not the only help they receive: they are soon joined by the first Italian contingents, a dozen tri-motor Savoia S-81s, of which three were lost during the flight from Elmas, in Sardinia. This important reinforcement was to play a decisive role to support the operation for Franco's first naval convoy across the Strait, attacking the Republican destroyer Alcalá Galiano which sought to prevent the crossing and contributing to the "aerial bridge". These are followed by the first Italian Fiat CR-32 fighters, which are unloaded on the night of the 13th of August in Melilla from the Italian ship Nereide. Disassembled and still in their boxes, they are transferred to the Nador aerodrome for assembly and from there they go to Tetouan. The first two land at Tablada, piloted by Lieutenant Vittorio Cecherelli (called Vaccarese in his Legionnaire documentation— and Salvadori Salvo—, at 12:40 hours on the 17th of August. None of those present could have imagined at that time the long relationship which these elegant Italian sesquiplanes would maintain with the Tablada Base for many years afterwards. On the 6th of August, German assistance intensifies with the arrival at Cadiz of the steam ship Usaramo from Hamburg, belonging to the Nazi Labour Front. Its passengers, 87 youths dressed in plain clothes (suspiciously with the same cheap suit, however) were “going on a summer holiday” with the false tourist organisation "Reisegellschaft Union" (Union Tourism Group). The ship unloads six Heinkel 51 fighters and ten tri-motor Ju-52 bombers—in addition to the nine Luft Hansa sent by air—, an 88mm AA gun, twenty 20mm AA guns, medicine, three radio transmitters, gas masks, ammunition and spare parts. After this material is transferred to Tablada, the Southern Regional Fleet assembles them with the assistance of German technicians, a task which they carried out during the entire course of the conflict and which involved countless numbers of aircraft of all different kinds and origin. The bombing of Tablada On the 19th of August, at 23:00 hours, two of the Republican Fokkers bomb Tablada for the first time, and although the aircraft are hidden amidst the trees, one of the bombs kills Corporal Romero. Seven hours later two DC-2s repeat the attack, again causing little damage. On the 22nd, the now functioning captured DC-2 returns the favour in Madrid, launching more than thirty 50 kg bombs over the capital. It is piloted by Captain Carlos Haya with the mechanic Correa, the Guil brothers —one of which is radio operator and the other armourer — and the Corporals Ruiz and Gómez. They carry out their first services on the 20th of August, at times flying from Córdoba. At the other Andalusian Air Base, Armilla (officially known as the "Dávila" Aerodrome), at the time of the uprising the staff of the former Group 12 fighter group were still stationed there: Captain Pérez Martínez de Victoria and the Lieutenants Guerrero García, Peñafiel Calahorra, Bermúdez de Castro, Correa Guerrero, Valiente Sánchez and Ruiz Cappa, as well as the Second Lieutenant Valenzuela Extremera. Two pilots, a sergeant and a corporal, were on leave and never returned to the Base. Almost all the officials were sympathisers of the rebels. Accordingly, when on the 20th they receive orders to hand over command to Captain Muñoz del Corral, who arrives in a CASA-Breguet XIX from the School of Shooting and Bombardment at Los Alcázares (Murcia) — as is later confirmed by the Aviation Department in Madrid—,the official on duty, Miquel Guerrero, refuses to do so. Eventually, Muñoz del Corral manages to take control and orders the departure to Los Alcázares of the two Breguets based there and the ground evacuation of the staff, specialists, mechanics and troops on duty, in a column of vehicles led by the Captain Doctor Bort Albalat. The following day, upon its arrival at Almería, this small unit effectively contributes to quell the uprising in this Andalusian city, together with the bombardments by two Breguets and a Nieuport from Los Alcázares. They then continue their journey to Los Alcázares on the 24th. Meanwhile, the officials who remain in Granada take control of the aerodrome. On the 21st, thinking that Armilla was still under its control, the government sends a patrol of three HispanoNieuport Fighters from Group 11 at Getafe, piloted by Lieutenant Juan Prieto, Sergeant Gerardo Martín and Corporal Laurentino Lozano, who are taken prisoner after landing. The former went on to serve for the rebels, while the two subofficials, who were mechanics, no longer provided flight services, being forced to join the ground staff of the Granada base due to understaffing after its evacuation. The pilots of the Aero Club Right from the beginning the pilots of the Aero Club joined the uprising and formed a provisional squadron. They carried out numerous missions, basically reconnaissance and communications to establish a complete picture of the zones and towns near the capital, the situation of which was unclear as sides were taken. Some of these, such as Manuel del Camino, flew in military aircraft, but the majority joined the nationalists with their light planes and flew over towns in an attempt to determine the situation, bringing news, arms and provisions to isolated forces and at times coming under fire from popular militia and Republican defenders. These civil pilots included Álvaro Gil Delgado, Fernando Medina and Fernando Flores Solís, among others. They soon suffered their first casualties, >> HISTORIA DE LA AERONÁUTICA ANDALUZA A+A que los bandos se deslindan. The photograph shows at least twenty aircraft, significantly more than the twelve which it is generally claimed were supplied. Disassembled, but still with the numbers and markings of the Regia Aeronautica Italiana, they await their transfer first to Nador by road and later to Tablada by plane, via Tetouan. In total, during the conflict 17 members of the Aero Club were killed in action, including famed pilots Manuel Vázquez Sagastizábal, the above-mentioned Manuel del Camino and Jose María Osborne Vázquez, to name a few. According to Querol Müller, the Log of Aerial Operations included 440 flights from 20 July through to 27 December of that year, with the loss of two aircraft, the one mentioned previously downed at La Roda and another which crashed at Cáceres on 20 August. At the time of the attempted coup the other Andalusian Aero Club at Malaga had two light planes, the Freüller Valls and a Monocoupe 90A, and a single pilot, police officer Francisco Quintas Álvarez, at the service of the government authorities. The “aerial bridge” The insistence of Queipo de Llano, the precarious overlord of a Seville dotted with barracks, led on the 20th to a flight by a Fokker transport plane with a lieutenant and nine legionnaires of the 5ª Bandera Unit to Tablada. Hours later another flight arrived with a sergeant and ten legionnaires. On that same day a third FVII tri-motor joined them, making a total of 41 legionnaires by the end of the day. On the 3rd of August a Fokker FVIIa acquired in Tangier entered into service. The fact it was only a single-motor three-seater made it less useful, except in the early, desperate moments when the rebels had to attend to more immediate needs. The Fokkers and Dornier Wals — and two pairs of Breguet XIXs sent from Larache and Melilla— alternated transport flights with attacks and bombing of naval units harassing the rebels, first from Tangier and later from Malaga. Even so, in the first five days the FVIIs, making six daily flights, transported some 450 legionnaires and regular troops, a figure which is clearly insufficient to call these actions an "aerial bridge". On the 25th this small transport fleet was joined by the Douglas DC-2 sabotaged by Vara de Rey at Tablada and on the 28th the Lufthansa Ju-52 D-APOK "Max von Müller" returned from Germany after eleven flying hours from Berlin — now without the excuse of the requisition but with the same pilot, Captain Alfred Henke. The following day it joined the troop transport efforts in Tetouan after getting rid of its civil registration. From this time onward, the crossing of the Strait was to have a clear German accent, until becoming a completely German operation following the progressive incorporation of the remaining Ju-52s and crew sent by Hitler. During the month of July 2,063 troops were airlifted from Morocco with their gear but the rhythm—and the aircraft used— continued to increase to reach a total of 23,393 men and 400 tonnes of war supplies at the end of November. Coming from a line of small biplanes —the He 37, He 38, He 43 and the He 49A (this latter plane being the first design by the brothers Siegfried and Walter Günter)— the Heinkel He 51 was to become the first mass-produced fighter plane ordered in 1933 by the Reichsluftfahrtministerium for the Deutschen Luftsportd-verband (German League of Aerial Sports) which was the cover for the clandestine Luftwaffe, the German Air Force. The initial order of 10 pre-production units was immediately followed by 75 in the first series, the He 51A-1. Units began to be received between July of 1934 and January of 1935, with Group 1 of Jagdgeschwader 132 "Richthofen" from Döberitz being the first ones ready for combat in March of 1935. A month later, the He 51s had their first public presentation, revealing the existence of an until then secret German military aviation industry, when the He 51s of the 1/JG 134 "Horst Wessel" were presented as a “birthday present” for Hitler. With its elegant and clean lines and characteristic wheel fairing and powered by a lineal cylinder engine, the He51 was the first German fighter to enter into combat during the Spanish Civil War. It was initially very effective against the antiquated Hispano-Nieuport 52s of the Republicans and other French fighter planes. However, it was notably inferior to the Soviet Polikarpov I-15 fighters in terms of performance, armament and manoeuvrability, which had a similar configuration and a radial engine. They were accordingly soon relegated to secondary tasks and as support for ground operations. A+A
