A Letter from Our Pastor
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre
One of the most fascinating
places I have ever visited is the
Church of the Holy Sepulchre in
Jerusalem. It is also known as the Church of the
Resurrection. The church contains two of the holiest
sites in Christendom: the site where Jesus of
Nazareth was crucified (Calvary), and Jesus' empty
tomb, where he was buried and resurrected. The
Church sits in the Christian quarter of the Old City of
Jerusalem, at the end of the Via Dolorosa (The Way
of the Cross). In fact, the last four Stations of the Via
Dolorosa are within the church itself.
The site of the church was first consecrated in the
year 335 AD. It has been a major Christian
pilgrimage destination since that time. The first
church was commissioned by the Roman Emperor
Constantine the Great. The church has suffered
quite a bit of natural and unnatural disasters: fire,
earthquake, Muslim invasion. Yet, despite it all, the
Church of the Tomb of Jesus survives. In fact, there
have been agreements forged between Christians
and Muslims over the years which have kept the
church intact and unviolated.
A major renovation occurred under the Franciscan
friars in the year 1555. Since then the control of the
church has vacillated between various Christian
groups. Nominal control belongs to the Greek
Orthodox Church, which controls the main church
space. Other "pieces" of the Church are divided
between Armenian Orthodox, Roman Catholic,
Egyptian Copts, Syriac Christian and Ethiopian
Christians. Interestingly, there is no Protestant
presence at the church.
Stepping into the Church is like stepping into time
and history. Great events of Christ and the Church's
life are commemorated. There is the Chapel of St
Helena, near the site where Helena discovered the
true cross; the Chapel of Adam, where, according to
tradition, Adam's skull was buried; and the Stone of
Anointing, which tradition believes to be the spot
where Jesus' body was prepared for burial by Joseph
of Arimathea.
The tomb itself is in two parts. The outer room holds
the Angel's Stone, believed to be a fragment of the
stone which was rolled back on Easter, and the inner
room which contains the tomb itself.
The tomb is covered with a marble plaque, placed
there due to the generations of hands which have
touched the tomb. The Church is a very solemn and
holy place, leading to great prayer and devotion. It is
a bit daunting to see the divisions of faith, but it is
also a sign of hope. As many divisions of
Christendom come together to share what they
believe regarding the sadness of Good Friday and
the glory of Easter, it bodes well for a future of
common prayer and continued fellowship. Definitely
a place of visit -- to put on one's "bucket list.”

Catholic Leadership Institute!

Thursday evenings in addition to their morning hours every

LA IGLESIA DEL SANTO SEPULCRO

Uno de los lugares más fascinantes que he visitado es la Iglesia del Santo Sepulcro en Jerusalén. También
es conocida como la Iglesia de la Resurrección. La iglesia contiene dos de los lugares más sagrados de la
cristiandad: el lugar donde fue crucificado Jesús de Nazaret (Calvario), y la tumba vacía de Jesús, donde
fue sepultado y resucitó. La Iglesia se sienta en el barrio cristiano de la Ciudad Vieja de Jerusalén al final
de la Vía Dolorosa (El Camino de la Cruz). De hecho, las últimos cuatro estaciones de la Vía Dolorosa
están dentro de la propia iglesia.
El sitio de la iglesia fue consagrado por primera vez en el año 335 DC. Ha sido un lugar de peregrinación
cristiana importante desde entonces. La primera iglesia fue reconocida por el emperador romano
Constantino el Grande. La iglesia ha sufrido un poco de los desastres naturales y no naturales: incendios,
terremotos, invasión musulmana. Sin embargo, a pesar de todo, la Iglesia de la Tumba de Jesús sobrevive.
De hecho, en los últimos años, ha habido acuerdos forjados entre cristianos y musulmanes durante los
años que han mantenido la iglesia intacta e inalterada.
Una renovación importante se produjo en virtud de los frailes franciscanos en el año 1555. Desde
entonces, el control de la iglesia ha vacilado entre varios grupos cristianos. Control nominal pertenece a la

Al entrar en la Iglesia es como entrar en el tiempo y la historia. Los grandes acontecimientos de Cristo y
de la vida de la Iglesia se conmemoran. No es la Capilla de Santa Elena (cerca del lugar donde Helena
descubrió la verdadera cruz), la Capilla de Adán (donde según la tradición el cráneo de Adán fue
enterrado) y la Piedra de la Unción, que la tradición cree que es el lugar donde el cuerpo de Jesús, fue
preparado para el entierro por José de Arimatea.
La tumba en sí consta de dos partes. La habitación exterior tiene Piedra del Ángel, se cree que es un
fragmento de la piedra que se deshace en la Pascua, y la habitación interior que contiene la propia tumba.
La tumba está cubierta de placa de mármol, fue colocada allí por las generaciones de manos que habían
tocado el sepulcro. La Iglesia es un lugar muy solemne y santo, que lleva a la gran oración y devoción. Es
un poco desalentador ver las divisiones de la fe, pero también es un signo de esperanza. Como muchas
divisiones de la cristiandad se reúnen para compartir sus creencias con respecto a la tristeza del Viernes
Santo y la gloria de la Pascua, que es un buen augurio para un futuro de la oración común y continua
comunión.
Sin duda un lugar de visita para poner en la "lista de deseos".

Tres días después se celebraba una boda en Caná de Galilea y
estaba allí la madre de Jesús. Fue invitado también a la boda Jesús con
sus discípulos. Y, como faltara vino, porque se había acabado el vino de
la boda, le dice a Jesús su madre: «No tienen vino.» Jesús le responde:
«¿Qué tengo yo contigo, mujer? Todavía no ha llegado mi hora.» Dice
su madre a los sirvientes: «Haced lo que él os diga.»
Había allí seis tinajas de piedra, puestas para las purificaciones de los
judíos, de dos o tres medidas cada una. Les dice Jesús: «Llenad las
tinajas de agua.» Y las llenaron hasta arriba. «Sacadlo ahora, les dice, y llevadlo al maestresala.» Ellos lo
llevaron. Cuando el maestresala probó el agua convertida en vino, como ignoraba de dónde era
(los sirvientes, los que habían sacado el agua, sí que lo sabían), llama el maestresala al novio y le dice:
«Todos sirven primero el vino bueno y cuando ya están bebidos, el inferior. Pero tú has guardado el vino
bueno hasta ahora.» Así, en Caná de Galilea, dio Jesús comienzo a sus señales. Y manifestó su gloria, y
creyeron en él sus discípulos.

Santo de la semana: 21 de Enero– Santa Inés. Considerada en la Iglesia
como patrona de la pureza, es una de las más populares santas
cristianas, y su nombre está incluido en el canon de la misa. Debido a
sus riquezas y hermosura, la santa –a la edad de trece años- fue
pretendida por varios jóvenes de las principales familias romanas; sin
embargo, la joven había consagrado su virginidad al Señor Jesús.
Ante esta negativa, sus pretendientes la denunciaron como cristiana al
gobernador, quien utilizó halagos y amenazas para persuadirla, pero
todo fue en vano, pues Inés se mantuvo firme en su decisión. Al ver esto, el gobernador la envió a una casa
de prostitución, donde acudieron muchos jóvenes licenciosos pero que no se atrevieron a acercársele, pues
se llenaron de terror y espanto al ser observados por la santa. El gobernador enfurecido la condenó a ser
decapitada. El cuerpo de la santa fue sepultado a corta distancia de Roma, junto a la Vía Nomentana.

7,14,21,28 del 2016 después de Misa en español,
esto es 2:45 p.m. a 4 p.m.
Es obligatorio que los Padres de Familia asistan a las clases.
