Jack Long A Reflection for the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time Parish Directory © Liturgical Publications Inc PARISH OFFICE 763-421-2471 "Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." This is a promise that anyone would love to hear. With these words Jesus comforts and reassures us. He suggests that we will be satisfied and welcomed and fulfilled. His message in today's Gospel assures us that our heavenly Father loves us even more than earthly parents love their children. So we can enjoy the security of knowing that God will take good care of us. But God's care may not always look exactly the way we expect it to. His care for us is based on knowing what is best for us and what will make us flourish. And, sometimes, what we think we need isn't really best. It's important to keep this context in mind. This prevents us from understanding Jesus' words today in a selfish way. As the end of the passage makes clear, this asking and seeking that Jesus refers to is ultimately fulfilled in the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is promising us that if we ask God for his Spirit, he will certainly give it to us, his children. For most of us, we actually received this gift at our baptism. But have we taken full advantage of this? Although we may not realize it at first, in receiving the Holy Spirit we actually receive a whole host of gifts. With God's Spirit come the sevenfold gifts of wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord. And the fruits of the Spirit as St. Paul lists them in Galatians 5 include love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. God knows that all of these gifts and fruits make us very well equipped for life on earth, and for eternal life in heaven! What more do we really need to ask for? Are You Interested in Spending an Hour Each Week in Eucharistic Adoration? Each moment you spend in Christ’s Eucharistic Presence will increase His Divine Presence within you. Come to adoration. The Adoration Chapel has an urgent need for one or more committed adorers for the following hour: Monday at 1:00 a.m. If you can give one hour a week to be present to Christ in the Eucharistic Chapel, please call Joyce Schumacher at 612-860-3830. Ministers are always needed for all Masses here. Anyone interested in serving will be put in touch with one of the priests for a meeting. If that person discerns that they are ready to serve after this meeting, one of the priests will have a formal commissioning session for them. This commissioning session usually takes place after one of the weekend Masses. Then the new minister will be paired with an experienced minister for some mentoring and training. New ministers will be encouraged to attend the trainings in August as well. Persons who have been appointed to be Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are necessarily to be duly instructed and should distinguish themselves by their Christian life, faith and morals. Let them strive to be worthy of this great office; let them cultivate devotion to the Holy Eucharist and show themselves as an example of piety and reverence for this Most Holy Sacrament of the altar. Sr. Mary Anne Schaenzer Some people are needy and they ask for basics of food, clothing and shelter. Others are greedy and just want more and so ask for more. For others asking may be based on a formed relationship. In Genesis 18, we read about how Abraham pleaded with God for the sake of others. God could have just said, “They deserve it!” But he knew that there were also people who produced good fruit. The psalmist acknowledges the response of God to asking by praying, “Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me.” In the Gospel reading (Luke 11) we read Jesus’ parable of the persistent friend. Jesus reaches deep into the heart of his listeners to evoke a response of shame at not responding and yet the confidence that the friend will respond. Jesus goes on to say, “If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?” The good gift that we are given by God is the Holy Spirit, “ultimately a communication of the sense of being enfolded by God’s love… that convinces disciples that they enjoy here and now the relationship with God characteristic of the kingdom” (The Hospitality of God, by Brendan Byrne, p. 107). Be Renewed By God's Mercy Pope Francis said, "Let's not forget that God forgives and God forgives always." If you or someone you love is grieving the loss of a child or children to abortion, come and experience the healing mercy of Jesus Christ on our weekend retreat. The next Rachel’s Vineyard Twin Cities' retreat is August 5-7. For more information contact Nancy at rachels@ rvineyardmn.org, call 763-250-9313, or see www.rvineyardmn.org. The problem is that in our culture we often confuse what we really need with what we simply want. Many people need very little. However, we usually want so much more. A good steward only asks God for what he needs. St. John the Baptist Parish Festival St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Dayton is holding its annual parish festival Sunday, August 7.
