Dear Parishioners:
I feel like we should be on HGTV! The makeover is in progress! For us as Catholics the ultimate personal makeover is to look more and more like Jesus Christ. And the community makeover that takes on visibility is the facilities in which we gather.
St. Paul talks about the makeover in this fashion: “Whoever is in Christ is a new creation.” Let’s take a quick look
at our parish community and name some of this new creation.
Personal makeovers in progress!
 Over 100 high school aged confirmation students are headed for retreat next weekend. What a wonderful opportunity to meet the person of Christ and be transformed by the encounter!
 40 Acts of Kindness offered by innumerable parishioners equaling a torrent of grace for so many!
Community makeovers in progress:
 OUR PARKING LOT!
 Our effort to build a new church building!
We promised last Easter that more parking would be available before Easter 2013. We did it! The new lot will be
ready for use next week.
Please join me in celebrating the Grand Opening after each of the Sunday Masses on March 17 (except 5:30 pm
because it will be too dark). The Gospel today says, “Now we must celebrate and rejoice.” So come dine at the
site of our new church! Enjoy the sign of faithfulness that the new parking lot proclaims.
It also means that we are ready for the effort to build our new church.
I’m so looking forward to speaking with you at all the Masses next weekend.
I also have a new talent to share with you. ☺
With God all things are possible,
Monsignor Richard Martini
PARKING LOT PROGRESS AND LENT
The new parking lot is progressing on schedule and will be available for use next weekend! God is good! Landscaping is occurring now.
Let’s start thinking about how we might use the new lot as a way to fulfill our Lenten promise of 40 acts of kindness. Begin now to imagine using the new parking lot. Let’s be kind to the nearby businesses who have so graciously
allowed us to park near them. Rather than parking in the same spot that you have become accustomed to at these
businesses, make plans to use the new lot. See it in your imagination first. Then make it happen when the lot opens.
Just another thought for Lent. One of your 40 acts of kindness.

HOSPITALITY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Next Sunday, March 17th
from 7:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Looking for spirited volunteers to help with the
celebration of opening our new Parking Lot!
Must be 14 years of age or accompanied by an adult.
We are looking for helpers with energetic personalities
to help with set-up, greeting, and clearing tables as parishioners come and enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner.
We will have two-hour shifts available
from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Make sure to wear green.
Hello!! We are calling you to be
with us “Together in Mission”!!
This is a great way to get volunteer hours for school kids
or to get involved in the excitement of what’s
happening at our Parish!
We thank all who have committed to help us to keep our
school open! God bless you!
But not all the children celebrate with their arms up!
Why?
As of March 3rd, OLPH has reached only 76.4% of the
assessed amount!
We desperately need more participation and sharing
with our less fortunate brothers and sisters in our
Archdiocese.
We are short of our assessment by $28,615!
Save a movie a month, or skip a dinner out or deprive
yourself of some pleasure and share that with one of the
parishes or schools in need of your support!
If you are available to help with this wonderful
celebration, please contact Maria Holloway
at 661-510-6460 or email [email protected].
With God All Things Are Possible!
For your convenience, pledge envelopes are in the pews.

THE YEAR OF FAITH
The Catechism of the Catholic Church, which came into
effect in 1992, is divided into four major parts: The Profession of Faith (26-1065), The Celebration of the Christian Mystery (1066-1690), Life in Christ (1691-2557),
and Christian Prayer (2558-2865). The numbers following each of the parts are the numbered
paragraphs that relate to those parts. As
you can see the first part, which is dedicated to the Profession of Faith, is the
largest part, and rightly so because our
faith is what unites us and is based upon a
relationship with God.
In the following weeks we will explore the Profession of
Faith. What exactly do we say that we believe? But a
more challenging personal question is: Do I as an individual believe what we, the Church, say we believe?
Take a look at both the Apostle’s Creed and the Nicene
Creed and ask yourself these questions. After all, this is
the Year of Faith!
10TH ANNUAL MARCH FOR LIFE
Sponsored by the Van Nuys Chapter of the Knights of
Columbus, all are invited to join the walk on Ventura
Boulevard in support of choosing life. The walk will
begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 16th, at St. Cyril
of Jerusalem Catholic Church, 15520 Ventura Blvd. in
Encino. This 2 mile walk and is a part of a “Celebration
of Life’ that starts with an opening prayer. Walkers will
return to St Cyril’s Church for a closing prayer at 11:30
a.m. Funds raised will be used to help the Pregnancy
Counseling Centers and other pro-life activities. The
walk is family friendly and inclusive to all faiths.

Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in

Amen.
FOR THE DECEASED:
Verna Huber
God, our shelter and our strength, you
listen in love to the cry of your people,
hear the prayers we offer for our departed brothers and sisters. Cleanse them of their sins and grant them the fullness of
redemption. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Fourth Sunday of Lent
Page Seven
RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS
During the weeks of Lent, the "Elect" will wear a brown robe as they prepare for baptism. The brown robe is a
visual to set the unbaptized apart from the baptized community. The brown robe symbolizes "original sin" which we
are all born into as we enter this world. The brown robe of sin will be exchanged for the white robe of sanctifying
grace in baptism at the Easter Vigil.
On the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays of Lent, our Elect will be celebrating rites during the period of Purification
and Enlightenment. These rites are the Scrutinies. Each is a rite of exorcism. The Scrutinies are for self searching and
repentance. Their purpose is to heal all that is weak, defective or sinful in the hearts of the Elect. They also bring out
and strengthen all that is upright, strong and good. The Scrutinies deliver the Elect from the power of sin and protect
them against temptation, giving them strength in Christ who is the way, the truth and the life.

TIME TO PLAN SUMMER FUN
Vacation Bible School (VBS) is a fun summer camp
intended to bring families together by providing well
tested and proven fun activities that have Christ as the
center. All activities are meant to enhance knowledge
about God while taking a break from traditional
“school” teaching, instead take a “vacation”! With help
from volunteers, our church campus is transformed into
colorful FUN areas. Adults lead activity stations. High
School teens lead campers from station to station. Jr.
High students learn behind the scene roles of running a
camp. “Campers”, kids in pre-school through 6th grade
experience “hands on” life enhancing activities in a safe,
fun, sometimes wet, happy setting filled with lots of opportunities to break out into song and dance.
Vacation Bible School is
held in the morning, at
OLPH, the 3rd week in
July. Campers wear special t-shirts and receive a
camp CD of theme music, plus 3 solid hours of
engaging activities with
GOD, and all His wonder, as the main attraction. OLPH
encourages families to consider making VBS a priority
when making summer plans. The whole family can
“vacation” close to home. Schedule OLPH VBS for this
summer and experience a fun week!
VBS is currently accepting adult volunteers for camp
administration roles and station leaders, training provided. Please contact the Religious Ed. Office or call
Liz Lewallyn 661-993-4050 for more information.
Summer planning has begun, step up and join the team!

THE REDISCOVERY OF FAITH
The Celebration of the Word is part of the parish plan
for the New Evangelization in the Year of Faith.
Are you looking for a time to:
✣ Find a deeper meaning of life?
✣ Read, reflect, and pray with the Scriptures?
✣ Have a closer friendship with God and other
parishioners?
1. The Celebration of the Word of God helps us to rediscover our faith.
2. This is a new opportunity for parishioners to listen
even more to the Word of God to become better
Catholics and better people.
3. Celebration of the Word of God is a time of retreat
for a personal encounter of Jesus Christ.
Join us every Friday at 7:00 p.m. in the Pastoral Center.
Everybody is welcome!

CHARTER FOR PROTECTION OF CHILDREN &
YOUNG PEOPLE MARKS 10 YEARS
2012 marks the 10th anniversary of the implementation
of the US Bishops’ Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. The Charter contains practical
and pastoral steps that address allegations of sexual
abuse, prevent future abuse, and help abuse victims
through the healing process. Over the past decade, more
than 100,000 adults and children have undergone abuse
awareness and prevention sessions in archdiocesan parishes and schools. More than 5,000 VIRTUS® sessions
have been conducted, making access to this important
training easily available. Additionally, the archdiocese
continues to be one of the largest private organizations
in California to fingerprint employees and volunteers
(more than 100,000 to date) who work with our children.

PLAN PASTORAL PARROQUIAL
jalones, pellizcos, empujones etc.)

bueno! La jardinería se está empezando ahorita. Vamos a

n u e v o .
L a
reconciliación se ha
logrado en Cristo. El
mensaje tiene que ser
proclamado en todo
lugar
por
los
embajadores
de
Cristo.
