1st Sunday of Advent
Advent Light / Year of Mercy
The Advent and Christmas seasons are about
light. Jesus, the light of the world is coming. During Advent,
(the word Advent means ―coming‖) we use a wreath and each
week we light another candle, symbolizing the coming of the
light of the world. On houses we see lights going up to celebrate
this time of year. As the daylight lessens the nearer we get to
Christmas, we have a greater need for the light of the world. This
is a time to let His light shine through you.
The Year of Mercy called for by Pope Francis begins
on December 8. We are encouraged to learn about mercy, receive
mercy, practice and especially share mercy. When doing this, the
light of Christ breaks forth into our world, and God’s Advent (―God’s Coming‖) happens. It happens through
you and me. I pray you use these Advent days and this Year of Mercy to grow as a Christian and better shine
the light of Christ.
May the lights on the houses and the candles on the Advent wreath also remind you to let your light
shine. And may the words from today’s second reading be reflected in each of you: ―May the Lord make
you increase and abound in love for one another and for all.‖ By doing so, more light will be shining in our
world. Peace, mercy, love and light.
Paz, misericordia amor y luz. P. Tomás.

Dave Fontes: Prison Ministry
David Fontes is appointed by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as the Catholic Chaplin at Challenger Youth Probation
Camp. He coordinates activities and prepares the boys for Sacraments. The goal of his ministry is to help kids see how God has
already gifted them. Detention Ministry is about being present for
those in need.
Dave was born in Los Angeles and has been a parishioner
of Sacred Heart for 11 years. He has completed a Masters in Pastoral Theology at Loyola Marymount with emphasis in Spiritual Direction. For the last 35 years he has worked with the Irish Christian Brothers. During that time, he spent 9 years working with the
brothers in Peru.
The most qualified volunteers are simply those with a family of their own. The kids are in need of a mentor. The volunteers
end up leaving feeling like they got more than they gave. Even
though Dave has been a Chaplin for 2 1/2 years, he feels the more
he is here, the more he learns. In addition to mentors, they need
volunteers with music talent to assist in celebrating Mass or Liturgy of the Word. For more information please call David Fontes 661-941-7947

Year of Mercy
On December 8, 2015, when Pope Francis opens the large bronze doors in Rome, he will be symbolizing
that we open the church by performing more acts of mercy. Here are some ways to prepare ourselves for
this Year of Mercy – a year when we are called to be sharers and bearers of God’s mercy.
1.
Read -- Read Pope Francis’s invitation to the Holy Year – titled ―Misericordiae Vultus‖ (―The
Face of Mercy‖) – for you Advent devotions or as part of your New Year’s resolution. Just read a paragraph or two a day and really digest it. Put in your phone so you can do this while waiting or on a work
break. Here is a link to the document: http://www.thedivinemercy.org/mercysunday/ewtn/2015/
story.php?NID=6275
2.
Offer Kindness -- Become a walking ―field hospital‖ (Pope Francis’ vision of what the church
should be). If you see a homeless person begging, look him or her in the eye, smile and offer a blessing
or a hello or a ―how are you?‖ Say thank you when you order or receive food and be sure to make eye
contact. There is a lot of rudeness in the world and much discourtesy – offer kindness. And how about
showing this kindness to those around you in church?
3.
Forgive -- Forgive someone you have been unable to forgive. Just one. Even if you know you are
not fully forgiving, and know that you have not emptied out all your hurt, live in the day that you know
is coming, the day of healing. Be merciful to yourself for not be able to extend mercy – but keep trying.
4.
Don’t Blame or Complain -- Move out of the land of blame into the land of mercy, one step and one exercise at a time.
Don’t complain about the world or your situation. Use language that is positive and holds possibility. Some examples are: instead of
―running on fumes,‖ say ―full of joy,‖ or instead of ―not enough time,‖ say ―I’m doing my best.‖
5.
Select Words Carefully -- We can hurt others because we aren’t careful about the words we use, the jokes we tell or the assumptions we make. Be careful what you say and listen more. Two ears and one month – so listen twice as much as you speak.
6.
Pray -- Pray regularly to become more merciful, but also pray for someone beyond you or yours, like an elderly person dying
alone in a nursing home, a young person in prison or a homeless person we saw on the street.
www.thedivinemercy.org/mercysunday/ewtn/2015/story.php?NID=6275
