February has so much to offer both
residents and visitors with Carnival
on the 9th & 10th, and Valentine’s day

2nd February and going on until the
middle of March.

While sending cards, flowers, chocolates and other
gifts is traditional in the UK, Valentine’s Day has various
regional customs. In Norfolk, a character called ‘Jack’
Valentine knocks on the rear door of houses leaving
sweets and presents for children. Although he was
leaving treats, many children were scared of this
mystical person.
In Wales, many people celebrate Dydd Santes

Dwynwen (St Dwynwen’s Day)
on January 25 instead of (or as
well as) Valentine’s Day. The day
commemorates St Dwynwen, the
patron saint of Welsh lovers.
In France, a traditionally Catholic
country, Valentine’s Day is known
simply as “Saint Valentin”, and is
celebrated in much the same way as
other western countries.
In Spain Valentine’s Day is known as
“San Valentín” and is celebrated the
same way as in the UK, although in
Catalonia it is largely superseded by
similar festivities of rose and/or book
giving on La Diada de Sant Jordi (Saint
George’s Day). In Portugal it is more
commonly referred to as “Dia dos
Namorados” (Lover’s Day / Day of those
that are in love with each other).
In Denmark and Norway, although
February 14 is known as Valentinsdag,
it is not celebrated to a large extent,
but is largely imported from American
culture, and some people take time
to eat a romantic dinner with their
partner, to send a card to a secret love
or give a red rose to their loved one.
The cut-flower industry in particular is
still working on promoting the holiday.
In Sweden it is called Alla hjärtans dag
(“All Hearts’ Day”) and was launched
in the 1960s by the flower industry’s
commercial interests, and due to the
influence of American culture. It is not
an official holiday, but its celebration
is recognized and sales of cosmetics
and flowers for this holiday are only
exceeded by those for Mother’s Day.
Carnaval Weekend 9th and 10th
Carnival spectacular carnival festivities
throughout Benidorm and surrounding
areas, including nearby Alicante, just
45 km / 28 miles south of Benidorm.
Celebrations include colourful
processions of decorated floats, street
entertainment, music and dancing, and
the tradition of burying of a sardine on
Ash Wednesday.
Fiesta - Burying of the Sardines 25th
The “Burial of the Sardine” (Entierro
de la sardina) is a Spanish ceremony
celebrating the end of carnival
and other festivities. The “Burials”
generally consist of a carnival parade
that parodies a funeral procession
and culminates with the burning
of a symbolic figure, usually a
representation of a sardine. The “Burial
of the Sardine” during carnival is
celebrated on Ash Wednesday and is a
symbolical burial of the past to allow
society to be reborn, transformed and
with new vigour.

americana. No es una fiesta oficial, pero
su celebración es conocida y la venta de
cosméticos y flores para este día sólo se
supera en el día de la Madre.

dresses made of richly colored fabrics. They also wear jewelry,
hair ornaments and hand woven, knitted or crocheted shawls.
People display their clothing during parades.
Fallas (or falles) are constructed, displayed and ceremonially
burnt in many towns and villages in the autonomous
community of Valencia, including the city of Valencia. Fallas
are elaborate scenes made of papier-mâché and cardboard.
One is chosen by popular vote each year to be preserved in the
regional museum. The rest are burnt during fireworks displays
in the evening of March 19.

Fallas 2013 - 14th to the 19th Fiesta of “ San Jose “
This excellent Valencian fiesta takes place in Benidorm from
the 14th to March 19th, the festivity of San José.
Like the city of Valencia, Benidorm honours San José with Las
Fallas - a festival of nightly street parties and rowdy fireworks.
Three giant papier-mâché statues are erected and then
ceremoniously burned to the ground on the final evening.
The trio of statues, known as Central Falla, Rincon Falla and Els
Tolls Falla, are constructed by - and placed in - the different
districts of Benidorm. The areas try to outdo each other with
their huge and elaborate designs and often use the statues to
poke fun at local celebrities and politicians.
The Valencian fiesta is celebrated in Benidorm with the
erection of the Fallas enjoy Fireworks and concerts. Fallas burnt
on 19th and is not to be missed.
For five days the castles, monuments and “mascletaes” become
the protagonists of Benidorm, where the smell of gunpowder
is interspersed with the smell of flowers and the music of
the bands with the sound of masclets. A transformation that
occurs as a prelude to spring, and on March 19, everything
ends and everything begins; with the last of the ashes people
start to dream of Fallas again for the following year.
Commemoration of the “ Vírgen del Sufragio’ 16th
COMMEMORATION OF THE ARRIVAL OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN
At the old town church there is an offering flowers. The
discovery of the Patron Saint, the ‘Vírgen del Sufragio’ is
reenacted as the Virgin is carried from the beach by the
harbour up to the Church. A hugely moving occasion
with bands and the ringing of the Church bells to announce
the arrival of the blessed Virgin.
Fathers Day in Spain is the 19th March
Saint Joseph’s Day, also known as Fallas de San José, honors St
Joseph, the Virgin Mary’s spouse. It is held annually on March
19. This date is also known as Father’s Day (Día del Padre) in
many areas in Spain.
What do people do?
Some people attend special church services to honor the life of
St Joseph. St Joseph’s Day also celebrates fathers. Many people

Fallas 2013- Del 14 al 19 de Marzo Fiesta de San José.
Esta magnífica fiesta valenciana tiene lugar en
Benidorm del 14 al 19 de Marzo, son las fiestas de San
José.
Al igual que en la ciudad de Valencia, Benidorm honra
a San José con las Fallas, una celebración con fiestas por
las calles en la noche y sus ruidosos fuegos artificiales.
Tres gigantes figuras de papel maché son alzados y
quemados de forma ceremonial en la última noche.
Las tres figuras, son conocidas como La Falla del Centro,
La Falla del Rincón y La Falla Els Tolls. Son construidas
por- y situadas en- diferentes zonas de Benidorm. Estas
tres Fallas compiten con sus grandes diseños elaborados
y utilizan sus figuras para ironizar sobre políticos y
personas famosas.
La fiesta valenciana se celebra en Benidorm con sus
fallas disfrutando de los fuegos artificiales y sus
conciertos. Las fallas se queman el día 19 y no es algo que
te puedas perder.
Durante cinco días, los castillos, monumentos y mascleta
se convierten en protagonistas de Benidorm, mientras
que el olor a pólvora se mezcla con el olor a flores, la
música de las bandas se mezcla con el sonido de las
mascleta. Una transformación que tiene lugar como un
preludio a la primavera, y el 19 de Marzo todo termina
y todo empieza; con el final de las cenizas la gente
empieza a soñar en las fallas del próximo año.
Conmemoración de la Virgen del Sufragio día 16 de
marzo.
CONMEMORACIÓN DE LA LLEGADA DE LA VIRGEN
BIENAVENTURADA. En la antigua iglesia del centro
hay una ofrenda de flores. El descubrimiento de la
Santa Patrona, la Virgen del Sufragio es promulgada
como Virgen, y es transportada desde la playa ,al lado
de puerto, hacia la iglesia. Es un gran acontecimiento
con bandas de música y las campanadas de la iglesia
anuncian la llegada de la Virgen Bienaventurada.
El día del padre en España es el día 19 de marzo.
El día de San José, también conocido como las fallas de
San José, en honor a San José, el marido de la Virgen
María. Se celebra todos los años el 19 de marzo. Este día
también es conocido como el día del padre en muchas
partes de España.

HAS NOW BECOME HOT
WHEN it was launched in the summer
of 2011 to cover the northern region
of the Costa Blanca, HOT FM hit the
ground running, and all ears pricked

this part of Spain, and the station

supermarkets, bars, beauty salons, and
even schools, police stations and dental
practices! The secret of its popularity
rests on a sound foundation of
expertise in its choice of music, and the
personalities who host specially tailored
slots throughout each day.

The sound quality too is fantastic, HOT
FM broadcasts from Javea to Benitachell
on 88.8 from Moraira to Albir on 105.7
and from Benidorm to El Campello on
107.1. HOT FM also targets the global
market by streaming live on the Internet,
and is available on its iphone apps which
can be downloaded free from iTunes.
Research recently carried out showed
that, in a remarkably short space of time,
HOT FM has more than lived up to its
name, and can truly be called the hottest
station in the region.
So great has its success been that it
later launched an additional station for
Benidorm: HOT FM Gold on 95.3. Based
solely on the 60s, it is a delicious serving
of nostalgia in the form of all those pop
music “greats” people remember so well
from their youth.
Both stations have become highly
effective conduits for advertisers
wanting to get their messages across in
a highly-professional manner.
This is because businesses wanting to
advertise their goods or services are

then there are 2 butchers - if you are into

made in front of you and see what actually

or as much as you like quantity wise unlike
