He is the oldest male sibling of 4 brothers and 4 sisters. Sal’s mother emigrated from Puerto Rico before he was born. Sal went to school in St. Columbus, and left the neighborhood at age 15. He later went to nursing school at Wilkesbarre Veteran’s Hospital. Upon returning to New York, he went to Bronx Community College for 2 years, then to Lehman College, where he got his B.A. Sal then started working as a nurse at Lenox Hill Hospital and continued at Bellevue Hospital. Sal was introduced to Hudson Guild by his mother 18 years ago. He started by helping his mother get to the center and return home. With time, he developed an attachment to the Adult Services participants and began volunteering. Sal’s mother was a volunteer in the Hudson Guild kitchen, preparing silverware for over 15 years, and was a founder and a very active supporter of Chelsea Coalition on Housing. When his mother died, Sal promised both his mother and himself to take care of his mother’s friends “until they meet her in heaven one day.” Because they were the ones who helped him and his mother materially and emotionally, he feels indebted to them for being able to lead a successful life thanks to their contributions and sacrifices. In fact, Sal describes his lifestyle in the quotes “you get back as much as you put in” and “don’t let the past bring you down, just focus on the future and be happy.”
