Lenten Regulations
ABSTINENCE: The Church requires all the faithful who
have reached their 14th year of age to abstain totally from
meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent.
FASTING: All the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59
inclusive are also bound to observe the fasting regulation on
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
This practice involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and
avoiding food between meals. Light sustenance may also be
taken on two other occasions in the course of the day.
The Church also requests that pastors and parents see to it that
young persons, who are not bound to follow the above requirements, are educated in an authentic sense of penance.
EASTER DUTY: After they have been initiated into the Most
Holy Eucharist, all the faithful are bound by the obligation of
receiving Communion at least once a year. This precept must
be fulfilled during the Easter season, unless for a good reason
it is fulfilled at another time during the year. Easter time begins at the Vigil on Holy Saturday and concludes with the
celebration of Pentecost. By special indult, for the Dioceses in
the United States, this period is extended to include the period
from Ash Wednesday to Trinity Sunday May 31.
THE FOLLOWING SHOULD ALSO BE NOTED:
By divine law, all the faithful are required to do penance. In
view of this, the obligation to observe, as a whole or
“substantially” the penitential days specified by the Church, is
a serious one.
All other Fridays of the year remain as days of penance in
prayerful remembrance of the Passion of Jesus Christ. While
abstinence, in a true spirit of penance, is commended, the
Bishops of the United States have indicated that each individual may substitute for that tradition some other practice of
voluntary self-denial or personal penance. This may involve
acts of mortification, temperance, prayer or charity.
Mid-Morning Prayer ("Terce")… Sunday mornings
at 10:15 a.m. in the Tower Library Room; doors open at 10:00
a.m. Entire service lasts about 15 minutes and is chanted in
Latin (booklets with translations are provided). ALL ARE
WELCOME to join in this uplifting act of prayerful worship.
We pray for the sick…
Recemos Por los enfermos. . .
Requests for public prayers for the sick should be made by the
sick person her/himself or a family member, since at times the
person does not wish the illness to be made public. Please call
the parish secretary. The names will remain on the sick list for
three weeks and thereafter repeated as requested by a family.

FOR THE GLORY OF GOD
The entire history of the Jewish people is directed toward
one goal: that God might be glorified through the chosen people. Christians, too, are called to “do everything for the glory of
God.” In today’s scriptures Paul reminds us that the best way
for us to glorify God is to seek to benefit “the many,” as Christ
did when he shed his blood for all of humankind.
The reading from Leviticus explains one way the Jews
sought to benefit the many, by keeping lepers and leprosy away
from the chosen people. Jesus finds a better way. He cures the
leper, who immediately re‑enters the community to spread the
good news about Jesus to everyone who will listen. In this way
both Jesus and the leper fulfill their calling to glorify the God
who fills us “with the joy of salvation.”

o caridad.
