Wee Care Child Development Center located at 1149 East
Fillmore is in jeopardy of closing due to low enrollment. Serving
hundreds of neighborhood children over the years Wee Care
nonprofit organization, has been a fixture at 12th Street and
Fillmore for 37 years providing quality and affordable child care to
working parents of the Garfield Neighborhood since 1973. Betty
Calderon the Director of the center informed the Garfield News
that children are desperately needed so that Wee Care can keep
their doors open for the community. Betty has been working at
Wee Care since 1978. Her own children have attended the center
over the years. Betty explained that the Wee care has the capacity
to serve approximately 81 children from the ages of 1 to 13.
Currently the center serves about 43 children. The center is open
from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m Mondays thru Fridays. Programs
offered include Before and After School, Summer program, and
Child Care Food Program. Meals include a hot breakfast served
between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m., hot lunch and afternoon snack. A
review of available downtown child-care facilities shows that Wee
Care is one of if not the most affordable day care centers in
downtown Phoenix. Wee Care charges parents $18.50 per-day,
$92.50 per week and $370.00 per month. Betty encourages
working parents in Garfield that are in need of affordable child
care to drop by Wee Care and tour the facility. Wee Care Child
Development Center is also needs donations of children's clothes,
books, toys and other items that they cannot afford to buy at this
time. To support Wee Care or to inquire about child care, Betty

One day a farmer's donkey fell
down into a well. The animal
cried piteously for hours as the
farmer tried to figure out what to
do. Finally, he decided the
animal was too old, and the well
needed to be covered up anyway.
It just wasn't worth it to retrieve the
donkey.
He called all his neighbors to
come over and help him, They all
grabbed a shovel and began to
shovel dirt into the well.
At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried
horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down.
A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well.
He was astonished at what he saw, With each shovel of dirt that hit
his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would
shake it off and take a step up.
As the farmer and his neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top
of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon,
everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the
well and happily trotted off.
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt, The trick to
getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our
troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out of the deepest wells just
by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.
Now, enough of that nonsense.
The donkey later came back and bit the devil out of the farmer
who had tried to bury him alive. The gash from the bite got infected,
and the farmer eventually died in agony from septic shock.
And so, what's the moral of the lesson?
When you do something wrong and you try to cover it up, it
always comes back to bite you.

Un dia el burro de un granjero se
cayó dentro de un pozo. El animal
se quejó alarmantemente por horas

Know your Community
American Way Market at 10th street and Pierce, was originally
built in 1915 by Pay-N-Takit, a large Phoenix grocery chain. It’s a
rare example of 1920’s Spanish Colonial influence on neighborhood commercial architecture. Notably, the street-car ran past
Pierce in front of the store, then the line turned north on 10th
Street; rail tracks can still be seen under asphalt.
American Way owners since 1965, Roland Lau & Family are
working with the City of Phoenix Community Development
program to renovate and restore the store; upgrading not only
historic appearances, but added parking and curbside appeal.
American Way Market, and the quaint vacant store east across
10th, and Youth at Risk expansion, is an example of improvement
at a neighborhood “node” (where there’s a convergence of street
traffic and development).
If you wish to learn more about housing improvement, or artists
and small business “Storefront Improvement” grants, gardening
projects, or activities impacting Garfield, you’re always invited to
attend a Garfield Organization Revitalization and Economic
Development (RED) committee meeting, held the 4th Tuesday of
each month, 5:30 pm, at Lupe Sisneros Safe Haven, 1029 E
Garfield.

A “neighborhood” is both geographic (placeoriented) and social (people-oriented).
Geographically, Garfield Neighborhood
boundaries are; 7th to 16th Street, Van Buren
on the South, to I-10 on the North. One of
Phoenix’s first neighborhoods, with first city
water pump at first city park (Verde).
Socially we have a rich ethnic and cultural
mix. For the past 20 years your neighbors
formed Garfield Organization, a neighborhood alliance, still
working to improve the physical needs and social safety of your
neighborhood. We encourage resident to resident contact. Some
call it the "wave," or "honk" factor. Others just say, "buenos dias" to a
passing neighbor.
Un barrio no solo es classificado por su local
geografico sino tambien por su caracter social.
Geograficamente, los limites son desde la Calle 7 a
