SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE TYPHOON
VICTIMS IN THE PHILIPPINES
We have all seen and read about the incredible devastation
in the Philippines since November 8th caused by Typhoon Haiyan in
Tacloban, Philippines. Thousands of people are feared dead or missing after Typhoon Haiyan ripped across the central Philippines. The
storm’s massive surge is blamed for much of the destruction, particularly in Tacloban, where many neighborhoods were washed
away. Many of us have relatives and friends who are directly affected
by the typhoon. Many of us are asking what we can do to help. The
devastation in the Philippines is widespread and the need for aid is
growing. Your help will go a long way in helping our fellow brothers in
need. We have volunteers at the back of the church who are ready to
take your donations. Monetary donations will be taken until today,
December 1, 2013.
First Sunday of Advent
HOLY NAME SCHOOL
Matthew 24: 37-44
The Son of Man is coming
When Jesus mentioned Noah and the great flood, Peter’s
brother Andrew pretended to be paddling a boat. John, who was sitting next to him, stifled a laugh and covered his eyes with his hand.
Peter snapped a glance at the two trouble-makers and then focused
his glare on his younger brother. Andrew covered his face to regain
composure.
Jesus continued: “So it will be at the coming of the Son of
Man. Two men will be out in the field; one will be taken and one will
be left.” Peter was momentarily tempted to point a finger at Andrew,
indicating that if he wasn’t careful he would be the one that would be
left out in the field.
“The Son of Man is coming at the time you least expect,”
Jesus concluded. Peter knew that he would be awake and alert, ready
for the coming of the Son of Man. It might be any day now, he
thought. But one example Jesus used had him concerned. Jesus said
that Peter had to be prepared. Peter wasn’t sure if he was properly
prepared. One could stay awake and be alert, but why was one man
left standing in the field while the other was taken. If the one that was
left was unprepared in some way, then Peter had a problem. It was all
pretty hard to understand and everyone was getting tired. The disciples had been listening to Jesus talk to them for most of the afternoon.
It had all begun earlier in Jerusalem when they had asked
Jesus about the Great Temple. Philip wanted to know how such a
magnificent structure could ever be destroyed. Jesus had told them
that not one stone would be left upon the other. As they walked along
the explanation led them to try to understand the end time and the
coming of the Son of Man.
Now the disciples were gathered around Jesus looking out
across the Kidron Valley from the Mount of Olives. The temple was
prominent above the wall of the city. The sun was getting low in the
sky and Jerusalem was turning gold in the softer light.
Peter heard his stomach growl. The heady teachings of the
after-noon were soon forgotten as his hunger took over and urgent
plans for the evening meal were made.
Jesus told the disciples that because Noah was prepared
he was saved. The homeowner who was on watch for thieves
was not robbed. But of the men and women in the field and
grinding meal only two were saved. The other two were left behind. All four of these people may have expected the coming, but
only two were truly prepared by doing and living out the will of
God. As we move into the season of Advent we know that Christmas is coming. What remains for us is to truly prepare for it by
doing and living out the will of God in our lives.

FAZtor ‘s Notes
by Fr. Arnold Zamora
The new season is here! It’s the New Year of the
Church on this First Sunday of Advent. After completing this cycle of three of the Liturgical Year, we
are back to the start of the cycle – Year A.
Advent is certainly a preparation for Christmas. What better way
to prepare our hearts for the coming of the Lord than having spiritual
nourishment with our parish retreat this weekend, led by Fr. Charles
Puthota, pastor of St. Veronica Church. Our students at Holy Name
School will also make their own spiritual preparation with the Sacrament of Reconciliation this coming Wednesday.
For any event, preparation is always the key to its success. Like
the students of our Conservatory of Music, who will be having a
Christmas recital this Thursday at 5:30 PM, they have had to prepare
well by practicing their pieces diligently and faithfully for the past
months.
The thief who stole money from the donation box at our Blessed
Virgin Mary Shrine few Sundays ago was also prepared to do his act. I
bet this was not his first time to steal money from a box, because he
knew what to do. He was prepared with long wire as his instrument to
fish the money out from a well-secured box.
It was Sunday November 10th, while Bishop Wang was saying the
early mass. I was looking at the church security camera monitor to
see which part of the mass was going on, to give me a better idea
when to go over to the church. On another screen at the BVM shrine
area, I saw somebody who looked like he was trying to grab the donation box. At first I thought the person was from the BVM shrine group,
but a closer look revealed his physique was unfamiliar. His actions
were quite suspicious and it became obvious that he was actually
stealing. I hurried to the scene to apprehend the culprit. Hearing my
footsteps he hid behind the wall of the stairway. Having nowhere to
go, he came out from his temporary dungeon. I confronted him about
his actions and he started to exit without saying anything. Another
parishioner picked up the chase and called the police. The guy ran
away as the cop’s advised us over the phone not to chase him anymore. The whole incident is now under investigation by the Taraval
Police Station and we just submitted the video of the actual burglary to
them. Thanks to Silver Cusi for installing our security cameras and for
retrieving the data which will be very helpful in the investigation.
Make sure your preparation is for a good purpose and not to
commit a crime. Make better Christmas preparations.
It was Christmas time and the judge was in a merry mood
as he asked the prisoner, “What are you charged with?"
"Doing my Christmas shopping early," replied the defendant.
"That's no offense to shop early," said the judge.
"It is, your honor, if you shop before the store opens," countered the prosecutor.
GIVING TREE
The Giving Tree is now ready. Please partake in this
wonderful Holy Name Parish tradition by picking out a

Church.
THERE WILL BE NO MOVIE NIGHT FOR NOVEMBER AND
DECEMBER—WE WILL RESUME IN JANUARY
The Second Vatican Council:
A 50th Anniversary Retrospective
By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church,
October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back
Question: What changes did the Second Vatican Council institute
with regards to the sacrament of baptism?
Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: Both the rites for the baptism of adults are to be revised: not only the simpler rite, but also the
more solemn one, which must take into account the restored catechumenate. A special Mass "for the conferring of baptism" is to be inserted into the Roman Missal.
The rite for the baptism of infants is to be revised, and it
should be adapted to the circumstance that those to be baptized are,
in fact, infants. The roles of parents and godparents, and also their
duties, should be brought out more clearly in the rite itself.
The baptismal rite should contain variants, to be used at the
discretion of the local ordinary, for occasions when a very large number are to be baptized together. Moreover, a shorter rite is to be
drawn up, especially for mission lands, to be used by catechists, but
also by the faithful in general when there is danger of death, and neither priest nor deacon is available.
In place of the rite called the "Order of supplying what was
omitted in the baptism of an infant," a new rite is to be drawn up. This
should manifest more fittingly and clearly that the infant, baptized by
the short rite, has already been received into the Church.
And a new rite is to be drawn up for converts who have
already been validly baptized; it should indicate that they are now
admitted to communion with the Church.
Editor’s Note: Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy) has as its central aim a focus on greater participation of
the laity in the liturgy. We are now reviewing the constitution’s third
chapter, “The Other Sacraments and Sacramentals.” Future chapters
in Sacrosanctum Concilium will look at "The Divine Office," "The Liturgical Year," "Sacred Music," and "Sacred Art."

The Holy Name “Tree of Life”, a bronze tree trunk with
