Foundation’s ‘Pull for Cypress’ Campaign Continues Through Oct. 29
The Foundation’s annual “Pull for
Cypress” campaign kicked off to a great start,
with the return of almost all of the donors
from last year and the addition of many new
donors this year.
Proceeds from the “Pull for Cypress”
campaign support various projects, programs
and student scholarships. Among them are
the Teacher Preparation program, the Library
Textbook Collection, the Black Studies learning Community, and the popular faculty and
staff Mini-Grants Program. Thanks to the
Foundation, the heavy burden many of our
students must bear to attend classes is considerably lightened. Approximately $150,000
was distributed in student scholarships last
year alone.
All employees are encouraged to consider

Draft of the Accreditation Self–Study Report Available for Review
The latest draft of the Accreditation Self-Study
report is now available for review.
It has been uploaded to the college’s Web site at
http://www.cypresscollege.edu/~pio/mt/blog/self-studydraft/ in the form of a Web log – or blog. This allows
readers to review the document and to offer any input
regarding the accreditation self-study. Visitors to the
site can then participate in a campus running dialogue
by reading and addressing the comments of subsequent
readers.
The responses will then be reviewed and considered for the final report that will be submitted for
Board approval in November.
During the week of October 18, a series of
“Dialogues” will be held on campus for further opportunities for discussion. The meetings will take place
IN the Wilson Conference Room on the following

This will be an opportunity for all staff members to interact with representatives from each of the
Accreditation SubCommittees regarding any concerns
or issues that may exist regarding the draft report.
Hard copies of the self-study report are now available in the Library, the Instruction Office, the Transfer
Center, Admissions and Records, Financial Aid, and

A report
on Cypress
College’s
Construction
Projects
A ceremony to break ground on the new Physical Plant/M&O Building will be held this coming Friday,
October 22, from 9-10 a.m. It will take place in Lot 6, where the building will be constructed.
This is the first time that all the staff will be centralized for the physical operation of our campus and it will
move them from a variety of locations, including some temporary buildings that will be demolished.
Another milestone was reached this week as work became visible on the rotunda of the new Library/
Learning Resource Center. The stainless steel beams stand in stark contrast to the burnt-rust color of the structural steel used thus far on the building.
The L/LRC’s construction continues to be on time and on budget. A “topping off ” ceremony will be held
next month (Monday, November 15) to celebrate the last piece of steel being placed into the building. It will be
held at 9 a.m. and is open to the entire campus.

Automotive Tech Prep Career Day
From:
Steve Donley
Subject: Automotive Tech Prep Event
Date:
October 14, 2004 10:03:41 AM PDT
The Automotive Tech Prep Event held Tuesday
was the best ever. We had about 106 students and 8
instructors and counselors in attendance for the fourhour event. The event was organized by Tech Prep
Coordinator Barb Pinkowitz, who did an outstanding
job, as she always does. The shop activities were developed by the automotive and marine instructors. We
had a 100% participation by these instructors. A special thanks goes to our shop manager Robert Chavez
who spent several days planning the visitation logistics.
He worked diligently with Barb and Jane Jepson, and
also with the faculty on their demonstrations, seeing to
it that all areas of the shop and automotive compound
were ready for the event, coordinating the set-up, and
performing the other activities necessary to make this
an outstanding event. Special thanks also goes to Jane
Jepson, who worked many hours with Barb, Robert,
and the faculty to ensure the success of this event.
Andrew Passage from Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A.
also attended the event and with his assistance we
redonated a Lexus ES300 to Savanna High School. The

The Univision network television show “Control” will feature Cypress College
students in an upcoming episode (air date to be determined). Flight Attendent students attended training at Alteon (a Boeing Company) adjacent to the Long Beach
Airport. Liz Perez, a former Cypress College student who is now a flight attendant
for Asiana Airlines, will be featured as a narrator of the episode. Liz sharerd the skills
she learned here with host Karla Martínez (below in pink). Students also learned how
to extinguish fires (right) and Aviation instructor Chuck Gifford landed an MD-11
simulator at Los Angeles Internation Airport (below right).
Up on the Roof...
This week produced the perfect opportunity to take photographs from the roof of the new Library/Learning Resource Center. Yes, the two-story, 62,500-square-foot
has progressed far enough in its construction that it has a roof durable enough to hold a photographer (and then some). Thanks to the folks at Forsythe Steel, who provided a ride to the top, here are some new images of the L/LRC. Click anywhere to view the slideshow.
