Faithful to Christ, faithful to the Priesthood

Dear Friends:
A long time ago I witnessed the burning of the
priests’ residence in our parish. I remember seeing
the flames pouring out of the windows and hearing the fire truck siren, which was getting louder. I
decided to run to the church to find the pastor and
tell him what was happening.
I found him in the confessional and, after apologizing for the interruption, I let him know that his
house was on fire. With a surprising calm, the pastor asked me if the fire department had been contacted. When I told him they were on their way, he
said with the same calm, “Let them do their work,
then; I am doing mine and there are many people
still waiting for confession.” His words caught me
by surprise. After hesitating for a moment, I left the
pastor in the confessional and ran two blocks back
to the burning house, ready to help in any way
necessary. As I turned the corner, I saw the firemen
doing their job, just as the pastor said they would.
I told them the pastor knew what was happening
and would arrive as soon as he could.
This experience made me realize the deep
commitment priests have for the administration
of the sacraments. The pastor taught me that the
grace God communicates to our lives through the
sacraments is much more valuable than the material possessions we accumulate.
In these pages Miguel Arias shares with us
reflections on the sacrament of holy orders. They
also include ideas and suggestions for music selections that animate our community in the celebration
of the sacraments of our faith. In this Year for Priests,
let us give thanks to God for the baptized who have
chosen the vocation to the ordained priesthood.
May their ministry be a witness and a joyful example
of the unity and love Christ has for us.
Hace muchos años fui testigo del fuego que consumía la casa
donde vivían los sacerdotes de la parroquia. Recuerdo como las
llamas se desbordaban por las ventanas. El sonido del camión de
bomberos ya se venía acercando y yo corrí a buscar al párroco en
el templo para ponerlo al tanto de lo que pasaba. Lo encontré en el
confesionario y, después de pedir disculpas por la interrupción, le
informé que su casa estaba en llamas. Con una calma sorprendente
me preguntó si ya habían llamado a los bomberos, y cuando le
dije que ya estaban en camino me respondió con la misma calma:
“Dejemos, pues, que hagan su trabajo, yo estoy haciendo el mío
y todavía hay mucha gente que espera confesarse”. Sus palabras
me sorprendieron mucho y, después de vacilar un poco, lo dejé
en el confesionario y corrí las dos cuadras de regreso al lugar del
incendio, dispuesto a ayudar en lo que se necesitara. Al llegar, y
tal como lo había dicho el párroco, vi que los bomberos ya estaban
haciendo su trabajo. Les informé que el párroco ya sabía lo ocurrido, y que llegaría tan pronto como pudiera.
Esta experiencia me hizo pensar en el compromiso profundo
que tienen los sacerdotes por la administración de los Sacramentos.
Aquel párroco me enseñó que la gracia de Dios, comunicada a
nuestras vidas por medio de los Sacramentos, es mucho más valiosa que todas las posesiones materiales que podamos acumular.
Además de las reflexiones pastorales, ideas sobre la celebración
litúrgica y recomendaciones sobre la música que anima a la comunidad en la celebración de los Sacramentos de nuestra fe, en estas
páginas, Miguel Arias comparte con nosotros una reflexión sobre el
Sacramento del Orden. En este Año del Sacerdote, demos gracias a
Dios por todos aquellos bautizados que han elegido esta vocación.
Pidamos que su ministerio sea testimonio y ejemplo gozoso de la
unidad y del amor que Cristo tiene por todos nosotros.

n las comunidades hispanas se ha visto el
sacerdocio como una vocación de primera clase,
llegando a ver en cierta forma al matrimonio y la
vida soltera como vocaciones de segunda. Este argumento
no verbal tiene como raíz un profundo amor por la Iglesia
y un espíritu cristiano muy fuerte; pero también el hecho
de que, en la época medieval la vida consagrada floreció y
se presentó como la vocación ideal para alcanzar no sólo la
salvación, sino la santidad.
A lo largo de la historia de nuestros pueblos prehispánicos
la clase sacerdotal tenía no sólo el privilegio de presidir
los rituales, sino también el conocimiento que le daba la
facultad de organizar la vida social y religiosa de la ciudad,
así como los trazos y el desarrollo de la misma. El papel
de los antiguos sacerdotes en las culturas precolombinas
bien puede compararse con el de los “liturgistas” griegos
que vivieron 600 años antes de Cristo, cuya tarea era
precisamente esa; preparar, organizar y coordinar las
celebraciones de la vida pública de la comunidad: su teatro,
sus juegos y sus desfiles. En las culturas precolombinas el
sacerdote no fue sólo un líder de la oración y de los ritos,
sino el poseedor del conocimiento en el que se educaba a las
nuevas generaciones.
El sacerdocio cristiano tiene esta posición privilegiada
no sólo por el poder que le confiere el oficio, sino por la
confianza y el cariño que el pueblo ha depositado en los
sacerdotes a lo largo de los siglos. Es más, la historia de
nuestros pueblos está llena de sacerdotes que entregaron
su vida al servicio de la gente, muchos de ellos mártires
reconocidos oficialmente por la Iglesia, otros no, mas no

n Hispanic communities the priesthood has been
seen as the highest calling, while marriage and
the single life were considered more as secondary
vocations. Rooted in a profound love of the Church and
a strong Christian spirit, this unspoken assessment also
stems from the fact that in medieval times the consecrated life flourished and appeared to be the ideal vocation for
attaining not only salvation but holiness as well.
As we look back over the history of our pre-Hispanic
peoples, the priestly class not only had the privilege of
presiding over the rituals, it also possessed the authority
to plan, develop, and organize the social and religious life
of the city. The role of ancient priests in pre-Columbian
cultures can easily be compared with that of the Greek
liturgists who lived 600 years before Christ. Their duties
were, in fact, virtually the same: preparing, organizing, and
coordinating the public life of the community, in regards
to activities such as the theater, athletic competitions, and
parades. Besides being the leaders of prayer and rites,
the priests of the pre-Columbian cultures were also the
bearers of the knowledge that would be passed on in the
education of the new generations.
The Christian priesthood holds this privileged position
not only because of the authority accorded it but also
because of the affection people have shown them over the
centuries. What’s more, the history of our peoples is full of
examples of priests who gave their lives in service. While
many of them are officially recognized by the Church as
martyrs, those who are not are no less praiseworthy. They
fought for our education, stood up against oppression,
and were the voice for those who had none. They were
promoters of peace, intercessors, educators, teachers,
farmers, pastors, and saints. They were priests of Christ,
and they gave their testimony of love and commitment to
the eternal priest who is Jesus, in whose priesthood we
all, by virtue of our own baptism, participate.
Only from this perspective can we comprehend the
depth of emotion and happiness felt in Hispanic families
when a son is ordained as a priest and all that this represents within Catholic culture.
Priesthood in the Old Testament
The Catechism of the Catholic Church indicates that
the people shall be “a kingdom of priests, a holy nation”
(1539; Exodus 19:6). Out of the twelve sons of Jacob
or the twelve tribes of Israel, God set apart one to carry
out the liturgical duties and rituals: the tribe of Levi. To
become a priest among the ancient Jews, a man had to
participate in a specific rite destining him to carry out the
sacrifices. That is because he could not, in and of himself, attain salvation for the people. As the Letter to the
Hebrews describes, the ministry of the priest also involves
intercession: “taken from among men and made their
representative before God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for
sins” (Hebrews 5:1).
The same letter also describes Jesus as a priest
“according to the order of Melchizedek” (Hebrews 5:10).
He is a priest, “holy, innocent [and] undefiled” (Hebrews
7:26). Melchizedek was high priest of the Most High God;
Jesus is not only the high priest of God, he is God himself
made a priest who, upon his death, was unblemished. He
himself is the sacrificial victim, and the wood of the cross,
which in him is glorified, is the fuel for the fire. Upon considering Christ’s sacrifice, we can better understand the
words of Saint Augustine: “Oh happy fault, which gained
for us so great a Redeemer!” In the story of our salvation,
the sacrifice of Christ brings complete forgiveness of our
sins, and therefore from that moment on, no more sacrifices are required of us. By the cross, and through his
glorious and painful passion, we have been made pure.
Every time the Church, by way of a priest, celebrates
the Eucharist, it celebrates the memory of Christ and his
sacrifice on the cross. Yet we have to understand that
when the Church celebrates the Eucharist, Christ does
not die again. Rather, we remember––by means of this
ritual––his painful passion, his death, and, above all, his
resurrection from the dead. This is how the Church affirms
that the liturgy celebrates the paschal mystery of Christ.

Sólo desde esta perspectiva podemos comprender por qué
en las familias hispanas hay tanta emoción y alegría cuando
un hijo es ordenado sacerdote y lo que esto representa para
esta cultura católica.

El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica (n. 1539) señala que
el pueblo “fue constituido como un reino de sacerdotes y
una nación consagrada” (Éxodo 19, 6). Dios, entre los 12
hijos de Jacob o 12 tribus de Israel, designó a una para que
desarrollara las funciones litúrgicas o rituales de la vida
del pueblo; la tribu de Leví. Entre los judíos, para instituir
a alguien como sacerdote lo hacían participar de un rito
específico destinándolo a realizar los sacrificios, pues por él
mismo no podía alcanzar la salvación para el pueblo. Como
describe la Carta a los hebreos, su ministerio juega también
un papel de intercesión: “a favor de los hombres en lo que
se refiere a Dios, para ofrecer dones y sacrificios por los
pecados” (Hebreos 5, 1).
La misma Carta a los hebreos, nos presenta a Jesús como
sacerdote “según el rito de Melquisedec” (Hebreos 5, 10).
Es un sacerdote con tres cualidades: “Santo, inocente e
inmaculado” (Hebreos 7, 26). Melquisedec era el sacerdote
de Dios Altísimo, Jesús no sólo es el sacerdote de Dios, es
Dios mismo hecho sacerdote puesto que a su muerte carecía
de mancha, es la víctima que se sacrifica, y la cruz que se
dignifica en Él es la leña del sacrificio. Al considerar el
sacrificio de Cristo, podemos entender mejor la frase de
san Agustín: “¡Oh feliz culpa, que nos mereció tan gran
redentor!” En adelante, la historia de nuestra salvación no
necesita de más sacrificios porque el sacrificio de Cristo nos
ha traído el perdón absoluto por nuestros pecados. En la cruz,
en su gloriosa y dolorosa pasión, hemos sido purificados.
Cada vez que la Iglesia, por medio de un sacerdote,
celebra la Eucaristía, celebra la memoria de Cristo, que fue
inmolado en la cruz. Pero debemos entender que cuando la
Iglesia celebra la Eucaristía, Cristo no muere otra vez, sino
que en ese ritual recordamos su dolorosa pasión, su muerte y,
sobre todo, su resurrección de entre los muertos. De ahí que
la Iglesia afirme que la liturgia celebra el misterio pascual
de Cristo: su pasión, su muerte y su resurrección.

Aunque el templo era el lugar para la oración y el estudio de
la Palabra de Dios, el hogar tenía un papel importante en la
vida religiosa de Israel. Tanto la sinagoga como el hogar eran
lugares de oración y bendición. En el hogar compartir los
alimentos constituía una acción ritual, pero también un acto
religioso presidido por el cabeza de familia. Principalmente
eran oraciones de alabanza a Dios por la creación que, por
venir de sus manos, era bendita y buena.
En la vida pública los ancianos tienen un lugar privilegiado
porque son sabios, consejeros y quienes organizan la vida
social y la religiosa que, hasta cierto punto, se mezclan
la una con la otra. Tienen cierto nivel de importancia, no
sólo porque siguen estando ligados a los sacrificios y a los
rituales, sino porque tienen una labor profética, no porque
revelen lo que depara el futuro, sino porque interpretan, a
la luz de los hechos, lo que Dios quiere de ellos. Juegan
un papel religioso, legal y de consejero. De ahí el nombre
griego que reciben los sacerdotes; presbyteros, es decir
ancianos.
Estas personas conocidas como presbíteros constituían
un grupo aparte, no superior, sino con funciones distintas a
las del común del pueblo. Este liderazgo natural, tan natural
como el de las mujeres que dirigieron la vida de nuestro
catolicismo popular, era parte de la identidad del antiguo
Israel. Este aspecto fue valorado de forma muy positiva
por Pablo y por Bernabé, quienes cuando visitaban las
comunidades instituían presbíteros en cada Iglesia (Hechos
14, 23), siguiendo la costumbre de antes de conocer la
Buena Nueva de Jesucristo. Esta misma práctica se siguió
en la Iglesia madre de Jerusalén.
Los presbíteros, además de las funciones ya señaladas,
tenían la responsabilidad de buscar solución a las necesidades
de la gente. Su ministerio encarnaba la responsabilidad que
el Bautismo genera en cada persona: ser profeta y sacerdote.
Este estilo de vida es ya, en gran media, la base para la
teología sacramental tan esencial en nuestra identidad
católica.

Cuando hablamos de la era apostólica nos referimos al
tiempo que hay entre la muerte de Jesús y la muerte del
último de los Apóstoles. En esa era, según los escritos
paulinos, se asignan ciertas funciones a los presbíteros que
se mantienen hasta nuestro tiempo, entre ellas, presidir la
liturgia. Esta frase sólo tiene sentido si consideramos que
el sacerdote por excelencia y por plenitud del orden es el

Although the temple was the place for praying and studying the word of God, the home also played an important
role in the religious life of Israel. Synagogues as well as
homes were places of prayer and blessing. In the home,
sharing a meal constituted a ritual practice as well as an
act of worship, presided over by the head of the family. At
these meals they offered prayers of praise to God for the
food (his creation), which was blessed and good because
it came from his hands.
In public life the elders held a place of privilege because
of their wisdom and their role as advisors, as well as their
role in organizing the social and religious life, which to a
certain extent were related. The elders were important not
only because they were closely involved with the sacrifices
and rituals, but also because they discerned God’s will
for them through everyday events. They played religious,
legal, and advisory roles, and that is where the Greek
name for priests, presbyteros (or elders), comes from.
These people, known as presbyters, constituted a
separate group, not necessarily superior, but with duties
distinct from those of the common people. This natural
leadership—as natural as that of the women who direct
our popular Catholicism—was part of the identity of
ancient Israel. This aspect was highly valued by Paul
and Barnabas who, according to the custom before the
good news of Jesus Christ, appointed presbyters in each
church in the communities that they visited (Acts 14:23).
This same practice was followed in the mother church of
Jerusalem.
Beyond the duties already described, the presbyters
had the responsibility of finding solutions to the needs
of the people. Their ministry personifies the responsibility
that baptism produces in every individual: that of being
prophet and priest. This lifestyle is already, in large part,
the basis for the sacramental theology that is so essential
to our Catholic identity.
Priesthood during the apostolic age
When talking about the apostolic age we are referring to
the period of time between the death of Jesus and that of
the last of the Twelve Apostles. During that time, according to the Pauline writings, certain duties were assigned
to the presbyters that are still maintained today, one of
which is presiding over the liturgy. This statement only
makes sense when we consider that the quintessential
priest, the highest and fullest expression of holy orders, is
the bishop. Beyond possessing authority over the com
munity, he also confers the capacity to preside over the
Eucharist to the presbyter. The First Letter to Timothy
(5:17) introduces us to this ministry and its relationship to
the authority of the bishop. Until that time, presiding over
the liturgy corresponded only to the ordained minister,
except in the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours.
What we now refer to as anointing the sick was also
the responsibility of the presbyter during the apostolic age
(James 5:14). This duty is specific to the presbyter as
opposed to other duties, such as serving at the altar or
caring for the poor, which are carried out by the deacon.
Meeting together to pray was Jewish tradition, and
people would gather not only in the synagogue, but also
in the home at mealtime. This, along with the memory of
the paschal celebration presided over by Jesus on the
night he was betrayed, was for the first Christians the
ideal background for carrying out the command of Jesus.
Because Jesus is not physically present to preside over
the Eucharist, the bishop and presbyters (empowered by
the bishop) assume that role.
After the apostolic age, around the year 100, we have
a clear indication that there are three levels in the order of
the presbyters, levels related to services provided to the
community, not with the extent of their authority. These
levels are: episcopate, presbyterate, and diaconate. This
ministerial model corresponds with a model of the Church
that, according to Ignatius of Antioch, has three fundamental aspects: the ministry of the word, the ministry of
the Eucharist, and the ministry of caring for the poor.

fue el campo ideal para que los primeros cristianos
cumplieran el mandato de Jesús. Al no estar presente
Él, en cuerpo, quienes asumen su papel son el obispo o
los presbíteros facultados por el mismo para presidir la
Eucaristía.
Después de la era apostólica, hacia el año 100, tenemos
ya un claro indicio de que hay tres grados en el orden de los
presbíteros, grados relacionados no con el poder, sino con
el servicio que se presta a la comunidad: episcopado, presbiterado y diaconado. Este modelo ministerial responde a
un modelo de Iglesia que tiene tres aspectos fundamentales
según Ignacio de Antioquía: el ministerio de la Palabra, el
de la Eucaristía y el del cuidado de los pobres.

Salmista
El ministerio de cantar como salmista es uno de los más
importantes que pueden realizar los laicos en la celebración.
En la última reforma se recuperó el salmo responsorial, después de siglos en que había quedado sustituido
por el “gradual” o el “tracto”, que requerían cantores muy
especializados y se proclamaban sin participación de la
comunidad.
El origen del salmo responsorial y del oficio de salmista
se remonta hasta la sinagoga y sus celebraciones litúrgicas.
En los textos de los Padres del siglo IV, como Ambrosio,
Agustín o Juan Crisóstomo, nos enteramos de la importancia que le concedían en la comunidad cristiana.
El ministerio del salmista está hecho de técnica musical
y de fe. Sabe música y realiza su ministerio pensando en
ayudar a la comunidad: “Para cumplir bien con este oficio,
es preciso que el salmista domine el arte del canto y pronuncie con toda claridad” (Ordenación General del Misal
Romano, Institutio Generalis Missalis Romani, IGMR
102; Cfr. Ordenación de las Lecturas de la Misa, OLM,
56). Cantila las estrofas del salmo para que la comunidad
pueda meditarlo serenamente y contestar con su estribillo o
antífona cantada. El papa san Dámaso habla del placidum
modulamen del salmista, una modulación plácida que ayuda
a ir profundizando en los sentimientos del salmo.
Pero a la vez canta desde dentro, “escuchando” él mismo
lo que ha dicho la lectura y ahora el salmo, saboreando la
salmodia, alegrándose, meditando, suplicando, aclamando
o pidiendo perdón, según el salmo que está cantando para
sí y para los demás.
Realiza su ministerio desde el ambón, porque el salmo es
también Palabra de Dios. Y en principio lo hace un ministro
distinto del que ha proclamado la primera lectura.

Psalmist
The ministry of singing as a psalmist is one of the most
important that the laity can carry out in the celebration.
With the last reform, we have recovered the responsorial psalm after centuries during which it had come to be
replaced by the “gradual” or the “tract.” Those required
very highly trained singers and were performed without
the participation of the community.
The origin of the responsorial psalm, and the office of
psalmist, goes all the way back to the synagogue and its
liturgical celebrations. In the texts of the early Fathers of the
Church in the fourth century, such as Ambrose, Augustine,
and John Chrysostom, we become aware of the importance they were given within the Christian community.
The ministry of psalmist combines musical technique
and faith. He or she knows music and carries out the
ministry for the purpose of aiding the community: “To fulfill
this function correctly, it is necessary that the psalmist
have the ability for singing and a facility in correct pronunciation and diction” (General Instruction of the Roman
Missal [GIRM] 102; cf. Introduction to the Lectionary for
Mass 56). He sings out the verses of the psalm so that
the community can follow along quietly praying it and
responding with the refrain or sung antiphon. Pope Saint
Damasus speaks of the modulamen placidum of the
psalmist, a peaceful modulation that helps people to go
more deeply into the feeling of the psalm.
But at the same time, he sings from within, “listening”
to what’s said in the first reading and then listening to
the psalm, savoring the psalmody, rejoicing, meditating,
praying, acclaiming, or asking forgiveness—depending
on the text of the psalm—for himself and for the entire
assembly.
He carries out this ministry from the lectern, because
the psalm is also the Word of God. And, in principle, it is
done by a minister other than the one who proclaimed
the first reading.

Sugerencias para la celebración litúrgica
Ritual Suggestions
Lent
During all of Lent, both the entrance and Communion
processions can be accompanied by one of the Lenten
psalms (51, 91, 130). We can use form 4 for the greeting, in order to begin the celebration. (Note: This greeting
is only found in the Mexican Misal Romano, not in the
US Sacramentary.) Form A of the penitential rite with the
Confiteor seems to be the most appropriate during this
time of penitence. The faithful may be asked to kneel
as a symbol of their repentance. If the third form of the
penitential rite is chosen, invocations I and II for the Lenten
season (Mexican Misal Romano only) are good options,
or any of the invocations found in Oracion de los Fieles or
Prayer of the Faithful can be used. Either way, observe the
sacred silence so that the faithful have adequate time for
reflection. Remember that during Lent the Gloria is omitted and another acclamation is sung before the Gospel
in place of the alleluia. The general intercessions should
flow from the readings. Use the options from Oracion de
los Fieles as a guideline, or adapt them to your parish’s
circumstances.
Consider using Eucharistic Prayer for Masses of
Reconciliation I, which is appropriate during the entire
Lenten season. Use Prayer over the People number 6
during the first part of Lent until just before the commencement of Holy Week.
La Cuaresma
Durante toda la Cuaresma, la procesión de entrada tanto
como la de comunión se puede acompañar con uno de los
salmos cuaresmales (50, 90, 129). Podemos utilizar el formulario número 4 del saludo, para comenzar la celebración.
El acto penitencial, formulario I, con el “Yo confieso”,
parece ser el más apropiado durante este tiempo de penitencia. Se les puede pedir a los fieles arrodillarse como
símbolo de su arrepentimiento. Si utilizan la tercera formula del acto penitencial, las invocaciones I y II del tiempo
de la Cuaresma son buenas opciones o utilicen las que se

RCIA
Durante la cuaresma se celebran varios ritos tomados del
Rito de la Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos (RICA). Los
escrutinios forman una parte esencial del tiempo de preparación para los elegidos y se utilizan las lecturas del Año A,
cuyos temas presentan una formación determinante durante
el proceso a la iniciación. El canto y la participación del
pueblo son importantes durante los ritos del RICA. Existen
oraciones colectas propias e intercalaciones para los mismos ritos en las misas rituales del Misal Romano.
During Lent, we celebrate various rites taken from the
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). The scrutinies
form an essential part of the time of preparation for the
elect. The readings from year A are used, as their themes
present an effective formation during the process of initiation. Singing and the participation of the assembly are
important during the RCIA rites. There are special opening
prayers and text inserts that are specific for these same
rites in the ritual Masses of the Sacramentary.
El Triduo Pascual
The Easter Triduum
Hay muchos preparativos y directrices para esta liturgia
señalados en el Misal Romano. El equipo planificador, los
ministros litúrgicos y por supuesto, el sacerdote que vaya
a oficiar deberían de estudiar bien las rúbricas y ensayar
lo necesario para llevar a cabo esta hermosa celebración.
Puesto que en muchas de nuestras comunidades existe una
diversidad cultural y de idiomas, será importante planificar
las liturgias y sus cantos con un repertorio multilingüe. Les
recomiendo el recopilatorio No Greater Love/No Hay Amor
Más Grande que contiene cantos bilingües muy útiles de
los textos del Misal Romano para los tres días.
Jueves Santo
Comienza el triduo pascual en Jueves Santo (Misa
Vespertina de la Cena del Señor) en el espíritu de la antífona de entrada que celebra la cruz que nos dirige hacia el
misterio pascual. Se canta el Gloria, y las rúbricas nos dirigen a tocar campanas mientras éste se canta. Después de la
homilía, toma lugar el lavatorio de los pies acompañado por
un canto apropiado (vean las antífonas del Misal Romano).
No se dice el Credo, pero si se hace la Oración universal.
Durante la presentación de las ofrendas, se recomienda
tener una procesión de los fieles con dones para los pobres
y cantar mientras una versión del texto “Donde hay amor
y caridad”. Se usa el Prefacio de la Santísima Eucaristía
I junto con la Plegaria Eucarística I (Canon Romano), la
cual lleva sus propias intercalaciones para Jueves Santo.
Terminada la comunión se deja un ciborio con hostias consagradas para el día siguiente sobre el altar y después de un
silencio se dice la oración después de la comunión, el cual
sirve como la última oración de la liturgia de esta noche.
La traslación del Santísimo Sacramento se acompaña con
el canto Pange lingua, seguido por un tiempo de adoración
en silencio antes de terminar. No hay despedida. Se desnuda
el altar y los que pueden dedican un tiempo a la adoración
del Santísimo Sacramento.
Viernes Santo
La liturgia de Viernes Santo (de la Pasión del Señor)

There are many preparations and guidelines outlined in the
Sacramentary for the Easter Triduum. The planning team,
liturgical ministers, and of course the presiding priest
should study the rubrics well and practice as necessary in
order to properly carry out this beautiful celebration. Due
to the fact that in many of our communities there exists a
diversity of cultures and languages, it will be important to
plan the liturgies and music with a multilingual repertoire.
I recommend the compilation No Greater Love/No Hay
Amor Más Grande, which contains some very useful
bilingual songs, the majority of which use texts from the
Sacramentary, for the three days of the Triduum.
Holy Thursday
The Easter Triduum begins on Holy Thursday (Evening
Mass of the Lord’s Supper) in the spirit of the entrance
antiphon that celebrates the cross that leads us toward
the paschal mystery. The Gloria is sung, and the rubrics
direct us to ring bells during that time. After the homily, the
washing of feet takes place, accompanied by an appropriate song. (See the antiphons in the Sacramentary for
different options.) The Profession of Faith is not said, but
the general intercessions are. During the presentation of
the gifts, a procession of the faithful bearing gifts for the
poor is recommended, as is the singing of a version of the
text “Ubi Caritas” (“Where Charity and Love Abound”). The
Preface of Holy Eucharist I is used along with Eucharistic
Prayer I (Roman Canon), which has special text inserts
for Holy Thursday. After the distribution of Communion,
the ciborium with consecrated hosts for Good Friday is
left on the altar. Following a period of silence, the prayer
after Communion is said, which serves as the last prayer
of the liturgy for the evening. The transfer of the Blessed
Sacrament is accompanied by the song “Pange Lingua
Gloriosi,” followed by a period of silent adoration before
the close of the service. There is no dismissal. The altar
is then stripped and those who can are encouraged to
continue in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament.
Good Friday
The liturgy of Good Friday (Celebration of the Lord’s
Passion) begins in silence. After reverencing the altar, the
priest and ministers prostrate themselves and then pray
silently for a while. Then they stand and continue with a
prayer without the customary greeting. For the reading of
the Passion, the various parts can be read by different
lectors. After the Passion is read, there may be a brief
homily and a short period of silent prayer. Today’s general
intercessions, with their ten intentions, have a distinct
form; the invitation to prayer is given, and the intention is
expressed; then, after a period of silence, the prayer is
said, and so on for each intention.
The second part of the liturgy is the Veneration of
the Cross. The rubric calls for the use of one cross for
the veneration, and it is recommended that the cross
be of appropriate size and beauty for the occasion. The
Sacramentary presents us with two forms of showing the
cross. Several songs should be prepared to accompany
the procession during the Veneration of the Cross, keeping in mind the participation of the faithful.
The Communion Rite is the third part of the liturgy.
The deacon or priest, accompanied by two ministers
with lighted candles, brings the ciborium with the Blessed
Sacrament to the altar while all stand in silence. The
Lord’s Prayer is said by all together. There is no sign of
peace or Lamb of God, only the invitation to Communion.
Any appropriate song may be sung during Communion.
A period of silence is observed after Communion, and
according to custom, the prayer after Communion is said.
Today’s liturgy concludes with the prayer over the people,
and all depart in silence. There is no dismissal.
Easter Vigil
Easter Vigil is “the mother of all vigils.” The celebration
consists of four parts. The first part is the service of light.
The people gather around the fire and meditate on the
marvelous works of the Lord. The Liturgy of the Word is
the second part. Although there are several options for the
readings, be careful not to lose sight of the importance of
listening to the wonders of the Lord, from the beginning
of time, “on behalf of his people.” The dynamic that is created between reading, silence, singing of the responsorial
psalm, and prayer helps us to listen, meditate, and pray
in a more profound way. The third part is the celebration
of baptism. If there are candidates to be baptized, the
RCIA is used. If not, we follow the Sacramentary. After
the celebration of baptism, the prayers of the faithful are
said, followed by the Liturgy of the Eucharist, which is the
fourth part of the celebration. The Preface of Easter I, the
paschal mystery, is proper for this evening. Keep in mind

La tercera parte es el Rito de Comunión. En silencio
y con todos de pie, acompañado con velas encendidas, el
ciborio con hostias consagradas se coloca sobre el altar.
Todos juntos dicen el Padrenuestro. No hay símbolo de
paz ni “Cordero de Dios” sino solamente la invitación a la
comunión. Se acompaña la procesión de comunión con un
canto apropiado. Se guarda silencio después de la comunión y como de costumbre se tiene la oración después de
la comunión. Se termina la liturgia de hoy con la oración
sobre el pueblo y todos se retiran en silencio. No hay despedida.
Vigilia Pascual
La Vigilia Pascual es “la madre de todas las vigilias”. La
celebración tiene cuatro partes; la primera es el lucernario.
El pueblo reunido alrededor del fuego medita los portentos
del Señor. La segunda parte es la Liturgia de la Palabra.
Aunque se presentan varias opciones para las lecturas, hay
que cuidar que no se pierda la importancia de escuchar las
maravillas del Señor, desde el principio de la historia, “en
favor de su pueblo”. La dinámica que se crea entre lectura,
silencio, canto del salmo responsorial y oración nos ayuda
a escuchar, meditar y orar de una manera más profunda.
La tercera parte es la Liturgia Bautismal. Si hay bautizos,
utilizamos el RICA, si no, el Misal Romano. Terminada la
Liturgia Bautismal, se tiene la Oración de los Fieles y sigue
la Liturgia Eucarística (cuarta parte). El Prefacio de Pascua
I, el misterio pascual, es el propio para esta noche. Tomen
en cuenta que hay referencias especiales para hoy en las
Plegarias Eucarísticas I, II y III. Aprovechen la bendición
solemne para la Vigilia Pascual y Pascua y, si es posible,
cántese la despedida solemne de Pascua con sus dos
“aleluyas”.
Domingo de Pascua
La celebración del Domingo de Pascua (de la Resurrección
del Señor) sigue en el espíritu de la noche anterior. Utilicen
el formulario 3 del acto penitencial con las invocaciones de

la Cincuentena Pascual del Misal Romano. Se canta el gloria solemne. Hoy, antes de la proclamación del evangelio,
se canta la secuencia pascual. Consideren aprender el arreglo de Jaime Cortez (Flor y Canto II 401) o el de Lourdes
Montgomery (Unidos en Cristo 435). En los Estados
Unidos en domingo de Pascua, después de la homilía, se
tiene la renovación de las promesas bautismales (no se dice
el credo). Si usan el Misal Romano de México, habrá que
usar el rito tal como se usó en la Vigilia Pascual. Después
de que los fieles hayan renunciado el pecado y renovado sus
promesas, se rocía al pueblo con agua bautismal mientras se
canta un canto apropiado.
Se usa el prefacio de Pascua I, el mismo de la Vigilia.
Tomen cuenta de que hay intercalaciones para las Plegarias
Eucarísticas I, II y III. Usen la bendición solemne para la
Vigilia Pascual y Pascua y, si es posible, cántese la despedida solemne de Pascua con sus dos “aleluyas”. Hoy, la celebración del Triduo Pascual que comenzó en Jueves Santo
por la noche, termina con las Vísperas Pascuales.
Los Domingos de Pascua
No olviden que estos cincuenta días de la pascua siguen
siendo un tiempo de instrucción —la mistagogia— para los
recién bautizados. Se recomienda tener un lugar especial
en la asamblea para los neófitas durante estos cincuenta
días de la pascua. Usen incienso durante las misas de este
tiempo. El cirio pascual mantiene su lugar junto al ambón
durante todo el tiempo de la pascua. Se recomienda usar el
rito para la bendición y aspersión de agua todos los domingos y el Formulario III del Misal Romano es el indicado.
Después de la aspersión se canta el gloria. Si no usan el
rito de aspersión, usen el formulario 3 del acto penitencial
con las invocaciones de la Cincuentena Pascual o las que
se encuentran en Oración de los Fieles. Usen la Plegaria
Eucarística I (Canon Romano) o III, la cual tiene su intercesión particular durante el tiempo de la Pascua en la que
se pueden mencionar los nombres de los neófitas. Si se usa
esta intercalación, habrá que omitir la palabra “hoy” para
que tenga sentido. Durante el tiempo de la pascua es apropiado usar la aclamación conmemorativa III, “Por tu cruz
y resurrección nos has salvado, Señor”. Usen la bendición
solemne para el Tiempo Pascual durante todos los domingos de la Pascua, y sigan cantando la despedida solemne de
Pascua con sus dos “aleluyas”.
Pentecostés
Con esta fiesta solemne de la Iglesia termina la celebración
del tiempo de la Pascua. Seleccionen del mejor repertorio
de la comunidad para la celebración. La recomendación
de la Iglesia es que la Misa Vespertina de la Vigilia de
Pentecostés sea una celebración prolongada, “de oración
intensa según el ejemplo de los apóstoles y discípulos,
que perseveraban unánimemente en la plegaria juntos con

Easter Sunday
The celebration of Easter Sunday (Resurrection of the
Lord) continues in the spirit of the night before. Use
Penitential Rite C.i. with the invocations for the Easter season. (Note: These special invocations are only found in the
Mexican Misal Romano under Cincuentena Pascual, not
in the Sacramentary.) The solemn Gloria is sung. Today,
before the Gospel acclamation, the Easter sequence
is sung. Consider learning one of the arrangements
either by Jaime Cortez (Flor y Canto II 401) or Lourdes
Montgomery (Unidos en Cristo/United in Christ 435). In
the United States, the renewal of baptismal promises
takes place after the homily. The Profession of Faith is not
said. If the Sacramentary is used, the form for the renewal
of baptismal promises for Easter Vigil is followed. After the
faithful have renounced sin and renewed their promises,
the people are sprinkled with holy water while an appropriate baptismal song is sung.
As on Easter Vigil, the Preface of Easter I is used for
Easter Sunday Mass. Keep in mind that there are special
text inserts for Eucharistic Prayers I, II, and III for Easter
Sunday. Use the solemn blessing for Easter Vigil and
Easter Sunday, and if possible, sing the solemn dismissal
for Easter with the double alleluia. Today, the celebration
of the Easter Triduum that began on the evening of Holy
Thursday ends with evening prayer.
The Sundays of Easter
Don’t forget that the fifty days of Easter continue to be
a time of instruction––mystagogy––for those recently
baptized. It is recommended that there be a special
place in the assembly for the neophytes during the fifty
days of Easter. Use incense during the Masses for this
season. The Easter candle remains in its place next to
the ambo throughout the Easter season. Using the Rite
of Blessing and Sprinkling Holy Water is recommended
for each of the Sundays of Easter, with form “c” being
the indicated form from the Sacramentary for this time.
After the sprinkling rite, the Gloria is sung. If the sprinkling
rite is not used, use Penitential Rite C.i. with the invocations for the Easter Season (Mexican Misal Romano only)
or those found in Oracion de los Fieles or Prayer of the
Faithful. Use Eucharistic Prayer I (Roman Canon) or III,
which has its own particular intercession for the Easter
season in which the names of the neophytes can be
mentioned. (Note: This intercession is only found in the
Mexican Misal Romano, not the Sacramentary). If this
form is used, the word “today” should be omitted so that
it makes sense. During the Easter season, it is appropriate to use Memorial Acclamation D, “Lord, by your cross
and resurrection.” Use the solemn blessing for the Easter
season for each of the Sundays in the Easter season, and
continue singing the solemn dismissal for Easter with the
double alleluia.
Pentecost
The celebration of the Easter season ends with this
solemn feast. Selections should be made from the
best of the community’s repertoire for this celebration.
The Church recommends that the Vigil of Pentecost
be a prolonged celebration “of urgent prayer, after the
example of the Apostles and disciples, who persevered
together in prayer with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, as they
awaited the Holy Spirit” (Circular Letter Concerning the
Preparation and Celebration of the Easter Feasts 107). In
the Lectionary, we are presented with four options for the
readings from the Old Testament, followed by the responsorial psalm. Next, the Gloria is sung and the opening
prayer is said. The celebration continues with the reading
from the Letter to the Romans, the Gospel acclamation,
and the Gospel reading. The Pentecost Sequence is not
sung at the Vigil Mass, but it is sung, with its beautiful and
poetic text, at Mass during the day before the Gospel
acclamation. Use the Preface of Pentecost along with
Eucharistic Prayer I, which has special text inserts for the
day. Eucharistic Prayers II and III can also be used, which
also have special intercessions for Pentecost. (Note:
these special intercessions for Pentecost are found in the
Mexican Misal Romano only.) Use the solemn blessing for
Pentecost and sing the solemn dismissal for Easter with
the double alleluia.

María, la Madre de Jesús, esperando el don del Espíritu
Santo” (Carta circular sobre la preparación y celebración
de las fiestas pascuales 107). El leccionario nos presenta
cuatro opciones del antiguo testamento, y el salmo responsorial sigue. Después se canta el gloria y de dice la oración
colecta (hay dos opciones). La celebración continua con la
epístola de Romanos, el aleluya y luego el evangelio. No se
canta la secuencia en la vigilia, pero en la misa del día se
canta la gran secuencia de Pentecostés antes del evangelio
con su hermoso texto poético.
El propio Prefacio de Pentecostés se usa hoy junto con
la Plegaria Eucarística I, que lleva sus propias intercalaciones. También se pueden usar las Plegarias Eucarísticas II
o III que también tienen sus propias intercesiones. Usen la
bendición solemne de Pentecostés y cántese la despedida
solemne de pascua con sus dos “aleluyas”.

La segunda lectura habla de ser mensajeros de Cristo, o
bien, embajadores, que llevan el ruego o la exhortación de
Dios a los demás. Podríamos decir que los mensajeros son
los que proclaman la Palabra de Dios en la liturgia o en la
formación religiosa. Ser mensajeros atañe a los lectores,
diáconos, sacerdotes, obispos, catequistas. Atañe también
a los ministros de la música; por eso es imprescindible
elegir cantos que comuniquen la verdad bíblica. Cantemos
de este día de salvación, de este momento favorable, que
ocurre cada momento de cada día. ¿Soy buen embajador?
¿Comunico el mensaje de la salvación de Dios claramente
a los demás?
The second reading speaks about being messengers for
Christ, that is, ambassadors. God appeals to his people
through them. We could say that the messengers are
the ones who proclaim God’s word in the liturgy and in
catechetical settings. The role of messenger applies to
lectors, deacons, priests, bishops, and catechists. It also
applies to ministers of music. For that reason it is critical
that we choose song texts that communicate biblical
truths. Let us sing of this day of salvation, this acceptable
time, which is every moment of every day. Am I a good
ambassador? Do I communicate God’s message of salvation clearly to others?
I Domingo de Cuaresma
En el Evangelio de hoy escuchamos la conversación entre el
diablo y Jesús. Cada vez que Jesús es tentado por el diablo,
Jesús le da una respuesta, no en lenguaje cotidiano, sino con
citas de las Sagradas Escrituras que Jesús conocía bien. Esta
escena nos presenta un reto: ¿Cuánto conocemos la Biblia,
para encontrar las respuestas a la vida, especialmente en
situaciones de tentación? En nuestros ministerios litúrgicos
es fácil fijarnos en el aspecto mecánico, sin preocuparnos
del aspecto espiritual que consiste de una profundización
bíblica y litúrgica. Hoy puede ser el inicio del propósito de
buscar una clase formal de biblia o de liturgia.

In today’s Gospel we hear the dialogue between the devil
and Jesus. Each time the devil tempts Jesus, Jesus
responds, not with everyday words, but by citing the
Scriptures with which he is thoroughly imbued. This scenario presents us with a challenge: How well do we know
the Bible? Well enough to find answers therein to life’s
questions, especially in moments of weakness? In our
liturgical ministry, it’s easier to focus on the mechanical
aspects than to worry about the spiritual dimension, which
depends on deeper biblical and liturgical knowledge.
Today could mark the beginning of seeking out such formation and knowledge.
II Domingo de Cuaresma
The Transfiguration is a paradigm of change—or glorification. The reading most like today’s Gospel is the second.
St. Paul tells the Philippians how Jesus Christ will change
even their lowly body to conform to his glorified body,
by the power of God. As we await our passage into the
Promised Land, the eternal kingdom with God, the fulfillment of the covenant, God can begin to transform our
lives now, to change the way we look, not externally, but
internally. It is the Spirit of God that transforms all things.
Let us be attentive to the Spirit, striving to put aside our
preoccupation with earthly things, even if just for today.
La Transfiguración es un modelo del cambio, de la glorificación. La lectura más parecida al Evangelio de hoy es
la segunda. San Pablo les dice a los filipenses que Cristo
cambiará hasta sus cuerpos humanos y los conformará a su
cuerpo glorificado por el poder de Dios. Mientras esperamos cruzar el umbral a la Tierra Prometida, el reino eterno
de Dios, el cumplimiento de la alianza, Dios transforma
nuestras vidas hoy, cambiándonos no exteriormente, sino
en nuestro interior. El Espíritu de Dios transforma todo.
Estemos atentos a ese Espíritu, haciendo a un lado la preocupación por las cosas terrenales, aunque sea nada más por
este día.
III Domingo de Cuaresma
Lectors and deacons, be alert! Today’s readings present
a challenge—they are long, and full of dialogue. Know
the message of the whole reading and the high point of
each paragraph. We might ask ourselves today, “What
kind of fruit am I bearing for the kingdom of God?” If little
or none, we should seek fertilization through the word of
God, through the sacrament of reconciliation, and a more
intentional habit of prayer. Sometimes, we need to have
“the soil around us” cultivated by others through admonition or encouragement. Let us take heed of the tiller. An
admonition might help us to prune away what is dead that
we may flourish once again and bear good fruit.

¡Lectores y diáconos, estén alerta! Las lecturas de hoy
nos presentan un desafío: son largas y llenas de diálogo.
Conozcan bien el mensaje de la lectura entera y el punto
central de cada párrafo. Nos podemos preguntar: “¿Qué
tipo de fruto rindo para el reino de Dios?” Sea poco o
nada, necesitamos el fertilizante de la Palabra de Dios o
del sacramento de la reconciliación; o bien, necesitamos
entregarnos a una oración más constante. A veces necesitamos que ‘la tierra en la cual estamos plantados’ sea cultivada por amonestaciones o por el ánimo de otras personas.
Hagámosle caso al segador. Una amonestación sirve para
podar lo que está muerto, hacer florecer de nuevo y, así,
rendir más fruto.
IV Domingo de Cuaresma
Consider the word “prodigal.” In today’s Gospel we see
two different meanings. It can mean exceedingly or recklessly wasteful, like the son who squandered his father’s
fortune. It can also mean extremely generous or lavish,
abundant, profuse. In this parable, the father is also prodigal in that he lavished forgiveness on the son when he
returned in repentance. We speak of the prodigy (wonder
or marvel) of love. Sometimes forgiveness cannot be
rationally explained; we can only marvel at the new life
that comes from it. Whom do you need to forgive? What
part of God’s inheritance have you squandered? Is your
repentance turning you toward home?

Consideremos el sentido de la palabra “pródigo”. En el
Evangelio de hoy, vemos dos significados de esta palabra:
“demasiado gastador”, como el hijo que derrochó la fortuna que le dio su padre; o bien, “sumamente generoso” o
“abundante”. En esta historia, el padre también es pródigo,
en el sentido de que otorgó perdón abundante, cuando el
hijo regresó arrepentido. Hablamos del prodigio o maravilla
del amor. Hay veces que el amor no tiene explicación intelectual, pero nos maravillamos de la vida que florece del
perdón amoroso. ¿A quién necesitas perdonar? ¿Qué parte

La justicia para los escribas y los fariseos se llevaba a cabo
por medio de apedrear a muerte. A veces nosotros “ponemos otros a muerte”. ¿Cómo? Quizá no tiremos piedras,
pero lanzamos palabras que hieren y destruyen el orgullo,
el honor o la personalidad de otros.
Jesús nos invita a considerar nuestro propio pecado
antes de “lanzar piedras”, sobre todo cuando exigimos de
los demás la perfección en sus vidas, incluso en su ministerio. Dejemos caer las piedras de la crítica y del juicio
falso, pero no le volteemos la espalda al Señor. Así como
perdonamos, así seremos perdonados por el Señor que es
misericordioso.
For the scribes and Pharisees, justice was fulfilled by
stoning to death. There are times when we also “put
others to death”—perhaps not by hurling stones but by
hurling words that hurt and destroy others’ pride, personhood, or honor.
Jesus invites us to consider our own sinfulness before
we begin to “throw stones.” This is especially true when
we find ourselves demanding perfection from others,
even in ministry. Let us put down the stones of criticism
and false judgment, but let us not walk away from the
Lord. As we forgive, so shall we be forgiven by the Lord
who is gracious and merciful.

María es el modelo de decir “sí” al Señor. Nos podemos
preguntar, ¿qué temo en mi vida? ¿En cuál aspecto me
falta fe o confianza en el Señor? María no sabía lo que la
esperaba. Pero su disposición al Espíritu Santo, es decir,
su confianza en el Poder del Altísimo, le permitió dar una
respuesta afirmativa. Como prueba, el ángel le anunció el
embarazo de su prima Isabel. Nada es imposible para Dios.
¿De veras estamos aquí para hacer la voluntad del Señor o
solamente nuestra propia voluntad? ¿Escucho con cuidado
al Espíritu Santo en momentos de oración? ¿Confío en que
también yo soy criatura favorecida por Dios por razón de
mi bautismo?
Mary is the paradigm of saying yes to the Lord. We could
ask ourselves, “What do I fear in life? In what way do I
lack faith in the Lord?” Mary did not know what awaited
her. Her openness to the Holy Spirit allowed her to give
an affirmative response, trusting in the power of the Most
High. As proof, the angel announced the pregnancy of her
cousin Elizabeth, for nothing is impossible for God. Am I
really here to do the Lord’s will, or is it my own will I seek?
Do I listen carefully to the Holy Spirit? Do I believe that I too
can be God’s favored child, thanks to my baptism?

Fíjense en la respuesta de Jesús a los fariseos: “Si ellos
se callan, gritarán las piedras”. Nosotros, que nos contamos entre los discípulos de Jesús, ¿somos suficientemente valientes para alabar a Dios con gozo y hablar
de las obras poderosas que ha hecho en nuestras vidas?
¿O nos avergüenza hablar de nuestra fe y nos quedamos en silencio, pensando que no sabemos suficiente
de ella? La fe está arraigada en una relación íntima
con Jesucristo. Meditemos y hagamos esta pregunta:
¿Hemos puesto a Jesús como rey en nuestras vidas o
somos como Pedro, que niega conocer a Jesús, por no
querer que nos llamen “cristiano”?

Notice Jesus’ reply to the Pharisees: “If they keep silent,
the stones will cry out!” We who count ourselves among
the disciples of Jesus, are we bold enough to praise God
with joy and speak of the mighty deeds God has done in
our lives? Or are we embarrassed to talk about our faith,
keeping silent because we think we “don’t know enough
about it”? Faith is rooted in an intimate relationship with
Jesus Christ. Have we made Jesus the king of our lives,
or are we like Peter in the Passion narrative? Will we deny
knowing him, lest we be labeled “Christian”?
Jueves Santo
In today’s world, what does it mean to wash another’s
feet? It’s a way of demonstrating the humility we ought
to have with others. To wash someone’s feet, we have
to physically change our posture, lowering ourselves to
touch the lowest part of that person’s body. It’s also humbling in that the feet we touch and wash may be dirty or
calloused.
Washing feet could mean that we “take a load off their
feet” and anticipate their needs by helping with chores,
without complaining. It could mean helping someone care
for an aging parent or providing shelter and a bath for a
homeless person. It could mean pushing a person in a
wheelchair who cannot otherwise get around, or opening the door for a person on crutches. Jesus gave us a
model to follow.

En nuestros días, ¿qué significa lavar los pies de una persona? Es un gesto que hacemos para mostrar la humildad
que tenemos unos con otros. De hecho, para hacer este
gesto tenemos que ponernos en una postura física diferente
a lo normal: nos agachamos para tocar la parte inferior del
cuerpo humano. En algunos casos, puede resultar humillante. En otros casos, se necesita mucha humildad para tocar o
lavar pies con callosidades o falta de higiene. Lavar los pies
quiere decir acomedirnos a “alivianar la carga” y anticipar
las necesidades del otro, sin quejarnos. Quiere decir cuidar
a los padres ancianos, dar hospedaje y un baño a la persona
que carece de vivienda. Quiere decir empujar la silla de
ruedas del que no tiene otra manera de moverse y abrirle la
puerta al que camina con muletas. Jesús nos invita a imitar
su ejemplo.
Santo Viernes
Who are the ones that bear the marks of affliction in
today’s world? Who are the ones with no stately bearing,
unattractive, avoided by people, infirm, and spurned?
What part do we play in crushing their self-esteem, their
personhood? Look around at the ones who bear in their
bodies the marks of the Lord’s suffering. Let us ponder
the plight of the elderly, especially those who are homeless due to mental illness or living isolated or abandoned
in nursing homes. How can Christ use our lives to bring
redemption to these situations? How are we helping them
to carry their cross?

nuestro mundo actual? ¿Quienes son los que tienen apariencias no atractivas, los despreciados por los demás, los
enfermos y los marginados? ¿Cómo contribuimos a aplastar

que llevan en sus cuerpos las marcas del sufrimiento del
Señor. Hagamos reflexión sobre la condición de los ancianos, especialmente los que viven en la calle porque sufren
problemas mentales o los que viven aislados, abandonados
en asilos para ancianos. ¿Cómo crees que Cristo pueda usar
nuestras manos para redimir estas situaciones? ¿Cómo los
ayudamos a cargar con su cruz?

This evening’s Gospel, while recounting the resurrection
of the Lord, places women in an interesting position:
evangelizers! While they can be accused of being curious, this very curiosity leads to a discovery and encounter
that would change the world forever. They were the ones
who announced the good news to the disciples and to
others. Sometimes the love of God does not make sense
to us. It can only be experienced—mere words are not
enough to convince. Remember that Peter had to go see
for himself. Say a prayer of gratitude for the women in
your lives who have passed on the faith to you—mothers,
grandmothers, godmothers, catechists, teachers, nuns.

El Evangelio de hoy cuenta la resurrección del Señor y
reconoce una actitud interesante en las mujeres: ¡evangelizadoras! Las podríamos acusar de entremetidas, pero
podemos reconocer que su curiosidad las condujo a un
descubrimiento y a un encuentro que cambió al mundo para
siempre. Ellas fueron las que anunciaron la Buena Nueva a
los discípulos y a los demás. A veces, el amor de Dios no
se puede explicar. Sólo se entiende al vivirlo; las palabras
solas no nos convencen. Vean que Pedro tuvo que ir a ver
por sí mismo. Hagan oración por las mujeres que les han
transmitido la fe: madres, abuelas, madrinas, catequistas,
maestras, monjas, etcétera.

through the waters of baptism, having heard the call to

the symbols of baptism in your parish? Is there sufficient
water in the font? Can people be completely immersed,
symbolizing their dying to sin and rising to new life?

¿Eres una persona incrédula? ¿Tienes que tener
prueba concreta para todo antes de creer en algo? A
los que no creen en lo que no pueden ver se les dice:
“Incrédulos” o “Eres como santo Tomás”. Puesto que
vivimos en un mundo saturado por imágenes visuales
y sonidos de todo tipo, es difícil emplear nuestra
imaginación y mantener las creencias que nacen
del espíritu y se nutren del espíritu, aunque nuestra
mente no tenga ninguna imagen visual. Sin ver al
Señor resucitado en la carne, el signo de su resurrección es vivir la sanación. Cristo nos sana hoy, y así
sentimos su presencia y su misericordia.
Are you a skeptical person? Do people have to prove
everything to you concretely before you believe it?
Someone who doesn’t believe what he can’t see is often
referred to as a “Doubting Thomas.” Since we live in a
society that is so saturated by visual images and aural
stimulation of every kind, it is difficult for us to engage our
imaginations, to hold on to beliefs that are born and nurtured in the spirit, even if no visual images come to mind.
We can’t see the risen Lord in the flesh, but one sign of
his resurrection is the healing we experience. Christ still
heals us today; in this way we know his presence and
his mercy.

Los que seguimos al Señor tendremos que contestar
las mismas preguntas que Jesús le hizo a Pedro. Si
decimos que amamos al Señor, Él nos llamará a servir
a su pueblo. Jesús no hace esta pregunta sólo una vez,
como si una vez fuera suficiente. Hace la pregunta
varias veces. Al decirle a Pedro que tendría que servir
hasta su vejez nos muestra también a nosotros que el
ministerio es algo para toda la vida. No nos “jubilamos” de amar a Cristo, y no podemos dejar de servir a
los necesitados. Hay muchas maneras de dar de comer
y cuidar de las ovejas. ¿A cuáles ovejas has dado de
comer hoy?
Those who choose to follow the Lord will have to answer
the same questions Peter was asked by Jesus. If we
say that we love the Lord, he will call us to minister to
his people. Jesus does not ask this question just once,
as if once were enough. He asks over and over again.
By telling Peter he will minister until he grows old shows
him—and us along with him—that ministry is a life-long
endeavor. We don’t “retire” from loving Christ and earn the
right to stop serving those in need. Feeding and tending
the sheep comes in many forms. What sheep have you
fed lately?

conoce íntimamente al Señor? La segunda lectura dice
que la multitud viene de cada nación, raza, pueblo, y
lengua. ¡Verdaderamente es una experiencia multicultural! Cristo vino para salvarnos a todos. ¿Tu parroquia acoge y celebra a la gente de cada nación, raza

celebrate with multicultural expressions each Sunday that
we gather. Music is only one of the vehicles that opens
doors to all cultures—through the various languages of all
in the community. Do you really know those who make up
your parish community?

another. The book of Revelation tells of the One who sits
on the throne saying, “Behold, I make all things new.” We
should pray daily that our love for one another be made
new so that it does not grow old and stale, or get weak or
burdensome. If we love one another, we treat each other
as Christ treats others, as Christ would treat us, and as
we would want others to treat us in return. Has anyone
ever asked you if you are a Christian? Could it be that they
saw a kind or loving act on your part?

carga. Si nos amamos mutuamente, entonces nos tratamos
como Cristo trataba al prójimo, como Cristo nos trataría a
nosotros y como nosotros querríamos que los demás nos

As we approach the celebration of Pentecost, we hear
Jesus’ final words to his disciples while he is still with
them. He told them, “the holy Spirit that the Father will
send in my name—he will teach you everything” (John
14:26). Jesus speaks to us, his disciples, as well. From
whom do we get our teaching? Do we open ourselves
daily to listen to the Holy Spirit, through reading and
praying with Scripture? Do we pray for the Spirit of God
to open our hearts and minds? Or do we look for the
message of the world, which only brings us turmoil? If we
listen to the Spirit of God, we will have an inner peace that
only Christ can give.

Al acercarnos a la celebración de Pentecostés escuchamos
las últimas palabras de Jesús a sus discípulos mientras
todavía estaba con ellos. Jesús les dijo: “El Espíritu Santo
que mi Padre les enviará en mi nombre, les enseñará todas
las cosas”. Jesús nos habla también a nosotros como sus
discípulos. ¿De quién recibimos nosotros nuestras enseñanzas? ¿Nos disponemos diariamente a escuchar al Espíritu
Santo, por medio de leer y orar con las Sagradas Escrituras?
¿Oramos para que el Espíritu de Dios abra nuestros corazones y nuestras mentes? ¿O buscamos el mensaje del
mundo que sólo sirve para atormentarnos? Si escuchamos
al Espíritu de Dios, tendremos una paz interna que sólo
Cristo nos puede dar.
La Ascensión del Señor
It used to be that we could go to the airport to see someone off and actually remain in the gate area until we saw
the plane leave the gate, taxi to the end of the runway,
and take off. Once the plane was in the air, we turned to
continue with the rest of our day. Some would stay and
stare at the horizon as if able to see the loved one who
had just departed, even if it seemed like ages ago. There
they would stand, unable to move. The Gospel challenges us to move. It asks us, “Why are you standing there
looking at the sky?” (Acts 1:11). Jesus calls us to action
in his name until his return. Will you stand and watch, or
will you take action?

Antes, podíamos ir al aeropuerto a despedir a alguien
hasta la sala de espera del avión, hasta ver el avion llegar al final de la pista, acelerar y despegar. Ya cuando
el avión estaba en el aire, nos dábamos la vuelta para
regresar a nuestras labores cotidianas. Algunos se quedaban y fijaban la vista en el horizonte como que si pudieran ver al pariente que había partido hacía sólo unos
momentos; y, sin embargo, ya parecía una eternidad.
Y allí estaban mirando al cielo, sin poder moverse. El
Evangelio nos reta a movernos; nos dice: “¿Qué hacen
allí parados, mirando al cielo?” Jesús nos llama a la
acción en su nombre hasta su regreso. ¿Entras en acción
o te quedas allí?

¿Cómo sería el mundo si todos nos uniéramos en el mismo
amor hacia el Señor y hacia los demás? El mundo sería perfecto, y al llevar unidad y amor a nuestro entorno, llevaríamos el cielo a la tierra, no por medio de ningún poder que
tuviéramos, sino por el cumplimiento de la misión que Jesús
comenzó y que Él completará. El libro del Apocalipsis bien
puede llevarnos al tiempo de Adviento, mientras esperamos
la venida gloriosa del Señor al final de los tiempos. Oramos
diariamente: “Ven, Señor Jesús”. Él viene en la Eucaristía.
What would our world look like if we were all made one,
unanimous in our love of the Lord and of one another?
This world would be perfect. We know that heaven is
perfect, and when we work to bring unity and love to our
world, we bring heaven to earth, not of our own power,
but in the fulfillment of the mission which Jesus began and
which he will complete. The Book of Revelation could well
transport us to the season of Advent, as we hope for the
Lord’s return in glory at the end of time. We pray daily,
“Come, Lord Jesus.” He comes in the Eucharist.

Hoy se ofrecen dos opciones para la primera lectura. La
primera, del Génesis 11, 1–9, contrasta con la primera lectura de la misa del día, tomada de Hechos de los Apóstoles.
En la del Génesis, todos los pueblos de la tierra hablaban
el mismo idioma hasta que, un día, todos acabaron confundidos y se dispersaron. En la lectura de los Hechos, todos
hablaban diferentes idiomas hasta que, por la infusión del
Espíritu Santo, todos entendieron lo que se decía. Oremos
para que el Espíritu de Dios inunde nuestros sentidos y nos
abra la mente para entender a los demás, especialmente a
los que hablan idiomas distintos al nuestro. Luchemos por
entendernos.
Today there are four options for the first reading. The first
option, from Genesis chapter eleven, stands in contrast to
the first reading of tomorrow’s Mass (Pentecost Sunday)
from the Acts of the Apostles. In Genesis, they began
by speaking the same language and ended up with their
speech confused until, no longer understanding one
another, they scattered. In the reading from Acts, they
spoke many languages, but because they were filled with
the same Spirit of God, each understood what was being
said. Let us pray that God’s Spirit will inundate our senses
and open our minds so that we may understand one
another, even those who speak a different language.

Recibimos el mandato de ir en paz. Recibimos la bendición
de Dios, y nosotros contestamos “Demos gracias a Dios”.
Cuando la voz del Señor preguntó: “¿A quién enviaré?”, el
profeta Isaías contestó: “Aquí estoy, Señor, envíame”.
Jesus sent his disciples into the world to carry out a mission. He sent them with his blessing, just as the Father
had sent him. The dismissal rite of the Mass can be so
easily overlooked because it is so short. Yet it can be one
of the most profound parts if we but realize its meaning.
We are given the command to go in peace. We receive
the Lord’s blessing, and for that we say, “Thanks be to
God.” When God asks, “Whom shall I send?” we answer
with Isaiah, “Here I am, send me!”

University in Lubbock, specializing in piano and harpsichord performance. For

Diego Correa y Damaris Thillet
Sharing the message of the word
of God through music
O
riginally from Puerto Rico, Diego Correa and
Damaris Thillet are two very talented composers
whose voices have enriched their music ministry. In the Camden Diocese in New Jersey, this husbandand-wife team has worked for many years to share the
message of the word of God through songs that invite
listeners to prayer.
Their work has already been successful. They have two
collections of liturgical music in Spanish, Eso Me Basta,
Señor and their debut album with OCP, Del Pesebre a la
Cruz (20564LC). A song from this collection, “Resucitó”
(He Is Risen), is featured in this edition of Liturgia y
Canción (see pages 24–25 and ocpenespanol.org/compositions/78266). The song’s cheerful and distinct sound
exhibits characteristics of the Puerto Rican folk music of
the jíbaros (the indigenous mountain-dwelling people on
the island). The simplicity of the melody and the text of
the refrain invite full participation by the assembly. On the
CD you can hear various percussion instruments, bass,
flutes, and the cuatro puertorriqueño (a traditional Puerto
Rican four-stringed guitar). Although these are the typical
instruments used for this type of music, the song can
also be played with just one or two guitars. The music is
perfect for singing the good news of Christ’s resurrection
with energy and enthusiasm.

riginarios de Puerto Rico, Diego Correa y Damaris
Thillet son dos talentosos compositores, que con
sus voces han enriquecido el ministerio de la
música. En la diócesis de Camden, en Nueva Jersey, estos
esposos han trabajado desde hace muchos años para llevar
el mensaje de la Palabra de Dios, por medio de los cantos
que invitan a la oración.
Su trabajo ha dado grandes frutos. Tienen dos colecciones de música litúrgica en español, Eso Me Basta,
Señor, y su debut con OCP, la colección Del Pesebre a
la Cruz (20564LC), de la cual estamos mostrando el tema
“Resucitó” (ocpenespanol.org/compositions/78266) en las
páginas 24-25 de este ejemplar de Liturgia y Canción.
El tono alegre y marcado presenta las características del
aguinaldo jíbaro puertorriqueño. La sencillez de la melodía
y el texto del estribillo ayudarán a la participación de la
asamblea. En la grabación se escuchan los instrumentos
de percusión, bajo, flautas y el cuatro puertorriqueño,
instrumentos típicos de este género musical; pero puede
funcionar muy bien con una o dos guitarras. Es perfecto
para cantar la buena nueva de la resurrección del Señor con
energía y entusiasmo.

La música marcó sus
pasos desde la infancia
El toque caribeño de los cantos de esta pareja tiene nombre
propio: Puerto Rico. Diego nació en Salinas y Damaris en
Ponce. Ella creció en Aguirre, una región perteneciente al
pueblo de Salinas. Diego creció en el área de la playa de
Salinas.
“Venimos de familias muy musicales. El abuelito de
Diego fue un gran trovador al igual que su papá, quien
todavía continúa cantando. En mi familia, mi madre ha
mantenido siempre las devociones de piedad popular del
pueblo, como por ejemplo, cantar en las fiestas a la Santa
Cruz, en el mes de mayo, las promesas de los tres Reyes y
los Rosarios cantados a los difuntos. Mi papá era un gran
crítico musical, siempre compartió con nosotros buena
música. Fue él quien me expuso a la apreciación de la
música clásica de mi país y la música de diferentes culturas
y generaciones”, indicó Damaris en entrevista con Liturgia
y Canción.
Cuando uno escucha cada una de las composiciones
musicales de esta pareja, entiende que la formación profesional ha ido de la mano del talento que los dos tienen.
“Diego cursó estudios en la escuela elemental, intermedia
y superior del pueblo de Salinas, en Puerto Rico. Yo cursé
estudios en el Colegio Católico con las hermanas religiosas,
hasta el grado ocho. Mis padres me pasaron a la escuela
superior Luis Muñoz Rivera, en Salinas, Puerto Rico”.
Allí Diego y Damaris se conocieron por medio del grupo
folklórico cultural musical de la escuela superior. “Yo
hice mis estudios de música con un énfasis en educación
y vocalización en el Conservatorio Esther Boyer en la
Universidad de Temple, en Filadelfia”.
Los dos han vivido con la música desde niños. Damaris
recuerda: “Yo comencé por medio de las promesas que
hacía mi mamá, pues la imitaba cantando los rosarios en las
Fiestas de Cruz de mayo. En el colegio, me acuerdo que las
hermanitas me enseñaban la música de Cesáreo Gabaráin
y de Juan Antonio Espinosa, pues la mayoría eran españoles. Comencé a tomar clases de guitarra y solfeo desde
los nueve años en la Academia Santa Cecilia con el profesor Raciel Reyes, en el pueblo de Guayama, Puerto Rico.
Diego comenzó tomando sus lecciones de guitarra desde la
misma edad”.
Talento y Formación
Diego es vocalista, toca guitarra, el cuatro puertorriqueño,
mandolina, güiro, flauta y saxofón. Damaris dice que admira muchísimo su gran talento musical. Ella es vocalista, toca
la guitarra, el bajo, el piano y un poco del cuatro puertorriqueño. “De nuestro trabajo la mejor parte es el disfrute
de poder llevar la Palabra de Dios por medio del canto.

Childhood and Family
The Caribbean feel of the couple’s songs is a testament
to their Puerto Rican heritage. Diego was born in Salinas,
and grew up in the coastal area of the city, while Damaris
was born in Ponce and grew up in Aguirre, a district in the
municipality of Salinas.
“We both come from very musical families,” explained
Damaris in an interview with Liturgia y Canción. “Diego’s
grandfather was a great troubadour, as was his father,
who still sings today. In my family, my mother was always
singing. It was important to her to maintain the various
traditional religious devotions, such as singing for the
Feast of the Cross (Exaltation of the Holy Cross) in May
and on Three Kings Day, as well as singing rosaries for
the deceased. My father was a great music aficionado,
and he always shared good music with us. It was he who
instilled in me an appreciation for the classical music of
my country as well as the music of different cultures and
generations.”
When you listen to the different musical compositions
of this couple, you understand that their natural talent
goes hand in hand with their professional training. “Diego
attended elementary, middle, and high school in Salinas.
I went to the Colegio Católico with the sisters until eighth
grade. After that, my parents transferred me to Luis
Muñoz Rivera High School in Salinas, which is where
Diego and I met through a musical folk group we were in.
Later I studied music at the Esther Boyer College of Music
at Temple University in Philadelphia with an emphasis on
education and voice.”
For both Diego and Damaris, music has been a part of
their lives since they were children. Damaris remembers, “I
began by imitating the way my mother sang for the Feast
of the Cross in May. Later on in school I remember the
nuns introducing me to the music of various musicians,
primarily Spanish ones, such as Cesáreo Gabaráin and
Juan Antonio Espinosa. I began to take guitar and vocal
lessons when I was nine years old at the Academia Santa
Cecilia with Professor Raciel Reyes in Guayama, Puerto
Rico.” Diego also began taking guitar lessons when he
was about nine.
Talent and Training
Diego sings and also plays the guitar, cuatro puertorriqueño, mandolin, guiro, flute, and the saxophone. Damaris
says that she really admires his amazing musical talent.
She herself sings and plays the guitar, bass, piano, and a
little cuatro puertorriqueño. “The best part of our job is the
enjoyment we get from being able to share God’s word
through song. Being able to reach God’s people through
such a beautiful ministry and in such a powerful and marvelous way as music is truly a gift from the Lord.”
Currently Diego and Damaris are dedicated to continued study and learning. “I am in the process of getting
my master’s degree in liturgy from La Salle University
(Philadelphia) and Diego is working on a degree in theology from the College of Saint Elizabeth (Morristown, New
Jersey).” For Damaris, music is a part of every moment
of her life. When talking about her hobbies, she says she
likes to read, compose, and listen to music. She listens
to a lot of cultural folk music and also enjoys listening to
sacred music, especially in the car. “It is a way for me
to pray while I’m driving.” Diego spends a lot of his free
time playing his guitar and composing, and he also loves
to cook. The couple very much enjoys going to cultural
festivals where they can try various ethnic foods.
Hand in Hand: Muse and Vocation
As do all musicians, this couple needs the muse. “I
believe that we compose when both of us feel the muse
that the Lord awakens in us,” says Damaris. They often
collaborate together in the process of composing. “Diego
likes to compose on his guitar and I usually compose on
the piano. Sometimes Diego creates the melodic part
and I work with the text or vice versa. We share opinions
and exchange ideas about different aspects of the compositions. There have been times when I have personally
been blessed with receiving some ideas for songs in my
dreams, and I have actually had to get up and record so
that I don’t forget anything. I love it when that happens,
and I have often experienced a beautiful encounter with
Jesus at those times.”
Both Diego and Damaris enjoy their talents and sharing
those talents with others through music. “Diego enjoys
playing, teaching, and serving as a mentor for young
pastoral musicians. I really enjoy teaching and serving our
young people, working to create new leadership in pastoral music.” Directing is one of Damaris’ passions. “It is
a great opportunity for me to connect with other musical
ministers as well as other ministries. I currently serve as
the director of the diocesan choir and this responsibility
gives me the opportunity to learn and interact with people
from cultures outside the Hispanic culture.”
Today, they are both very happy and thankful for their
beautiful family. Looking forward, they hope to continue
connecting with God’s people through music and above
all to continue motivating future generations. They are very
clear about what they want to accomplish through their
work: “We want our music to touch the hearts of God’s
people, so that they are able to participate [in worship] in
a full, active, and conscious way.”

dice que le encanta leer, componer y escuchar música sacra,
especialmente cuando va en el carro. “Es mi medio de
oración cuando estoy manejando. Escucho también mucha
música folklórica cultural. Diego, por su parte, dedica
mucho tiempo a tocar su guitarra componiendo. También le
encanta cocinar”. Los dos disfrutan mucho de los festivales
culturales, donde pueden probar comida de otras culturas.
De la mano: Musa y Vocación
Como todos los músicos, esta pareja necesita de la musa.
“Creo que en ambos es cuando sentimos esa musa que el
Señor despierta en nosotros. Diego compone con su guitarra
y, en mi caso, lo hago mayormente frente al piano”.
Los dos colaboran en el proceso a la hora de componer.
“Algunas veces Diego crea la parte melódica y yo trabajo
con el texto o al contrario. Compartimos opiniones e intercambiamos diferentes aspectos de las composiciones. Yo
personalmente he tenido la bendición de recibir algunas
ideas de composiciones por medio de los sueños. He tenido
que levantarme y grabar rápidamente para que no se me
olvide. Eso me encanta, pues he sentido una presencia de
Jesús muy linda en esos momentos”.
Los dos disfrutan su talento y lo entregan a través de su
música. “Diego disfruta muchísimo tocar, enseñar y servir
como mentor a jóvenes en la pastoral musical. Yo disfruto
mucho enseñar y servir a nuestros jóvenes, tratando de crear
nuevo liderazgo en la pastoral musical”.
Para Damaris la dirección es una de sus pasiones. “Es
una gran oportunidad de conectarme con otros ministros
de la música y otros ministerios. Actualmente sirvo como
directora del Coro Diocesano y esta responsabilidad me
brinda la gran oportunidad de poder aprender e interactuar
con otras culturas fuera de la cultura hispana”.
Hoy los dos viven felices y están agradecidos por la
hermosa familia que tienen. Dentro de sus metas está seguir
llegando al pueblo de Dios por medio de la música y sobre
todo motivando a las nuevas generaciones. Ellos tienen
claro qué quieren lograr con su trabajo: “que nuestra música
pueda tocar los corazones del pueblo de Dios, para que ellos
sean partícipes de una manera plena, activa y consciente”.

Moisés relató la historia de la liberación de los israelitas:
el Señor les dio la libertad. Esta historia debe recordarse
antes de presentarle ofrendas a Dios. El pueblo de Dios
debe regocijarse por todo lo bueno que el Señor le ha
dado.
Moses told the story of the Israelites: The LORD God led
them from bondage to freedom. This story should always
be recalled before offering gifts to God. The people of

Éxodo 3, 1–8. 13–15
El Señor se apareció a Moisés bajo la apariencia de una
llama ardiente. El Señor le dijo a Moisés que él iba a
liberar a los israelitas de la opresión de los egipcios.
The LORD appeared to Moses in a flaming bush telling him
he would lead Israel out of bondage in Egypt to freedom in
the promised land. The LORD God would accomplish this.

Isaías 43, 16–21
Isaías relató la derrota de los enemigos de los israelitas a
manos del Señor. Luego el Señor hizo brotar agua en el
desierto para que la gente bebiera.
Isaiah recounted how the LORD crushed the enemies of
Israel. Then the LORD God did something entirely new by
providing water in the desert for his chosen people to drink.

Una mujer fue sorprendida en adulterio. Los fariseos
esperaban que Jesús la condenara a morir apedreada. Pero

pecado, que tire la primera piedra”. Nadie se atrevió. Jesús
perdonó a la mujer y le dijo que no volviera a pecar.
Pharisees brought to Jesus a woman caught in adultery.
They hoped he would condemn her to death by stoning,
but Jesus said simply, “Let the one among you who is
without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” No one
dared. Jesus forgave the woman and told her to avoid sin.

El Señor se dirigió a Ajaz, diciéndole: “Pide…una señal….”
Ajaz se resistió y el Señor le dio esta señal: “la virgen
concebirá y dará a luz un hijo y le pondrán el nombre de
Emmanuel, que quiere decir Dios-con-nosotros”.
The Lord gave Ahaz this sign: “the virgin shall be with
child, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel.”

DOMINGO DE RAMOS
LA ENTRADA DEL SEÑOR EN JERUSALÉN Lucas 19, 28–40
Jesús entró en Jerusalén montado en un burrito. La
gente exclamaba: “¡Bendito el rey que viene en nombre
del Señor!”
Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem. People spread cloaks
on the road, crying: “Blessed is the king who comes in the
name of the Lord.”
Seis días antes de la Pascua, cuando el Señor entró en
Jerusalén, salieron los niños a su encuentro llevando en sus
manos hojas de palmera y gritando: Hosanna en el cielo.
Bendito tú, que vienes lleno de bondad y de misericordia.

Isaías 50, 4–7
Las palabras de Isaías narran los sufrimientos de Jesús. El
elegido de Dios ha recibido injurias y escupos.
The servant of the Lord God was rebuffed but did not turn
back; he was beaten and spat upon. The suffering one
knew the Lord God was with him.

Filipenses 2, 6–11
Jesús, siendo Dios, no se aferró a su condición divina. Se
humilló, tomó la condición de siervo y se hizo semejante
a los humanos. Ante su nombre todos deben arrodillarse.
Christ was in the form of God but did not consider equality
with God a thing to be grasped at. He emptied himself,
took the form of a slave, and was obedient unto death!
Therefore, God exalted him, and all proclaim him Lord.

Cristo, por nosotros, se hizo obediente hasta la muerte

Éxodo 12, 1–8. 11–14
En la Cena Pascual debe comerse cordero asado, pan sin
levadura y lechuga. La sangre del cordero señalará las
casas de los israelitas.
The Lord instructed Moses and Aaron regarding the
Passover meal. They were to eat roasted lamb, unleavened
bread, and bitter herbs and to sprinkle blood of the lamb
on the doorpost as a sign that those inside obeyed God’s
command.

Isaiah foretold the Messiah’s sufferings by describing those
of the servant who died and was raised up to take away
the sins of many.

Jesus is the great high priest, servant of all, source of

Pedro y los discípulos trabajaron toda la noche pero no

Peter and the disciples fished all night but caught nothing.

A controversy arose among the disciples whether or not
gentile converts were to be circumcised according to
Mosaic law. At a Jerusalem meeting the Holy Spirit, the

Hechos de los Apóstoles 1, 11
Hombres de Galilea, ¿qué hacéis allí parados mirando
al cielo? Ese mismo Jesús, que os ha dejado para subir al
cielo, volverá como lo habéis visto marcharse. Aleluya.
PRIMERA LECTURA
Jesús se apareció varias veces a sus discípulos después de
su resurrección. Al partir, el mensaje de Jesús fue que muy

Stephen was filled with the Holy Spirit as he looked up to
