Mission Statement
We, the people of St. Monica Catholic Church, recognize ourselves as a community of God’s children called to holiness
through Baptism and the Eucharist, to share the love of Christ through the message of the Gospel. Our mission is to
pray and worship, teach and share Christ’s saving message as we evangelize, build up, and nurture communities of
faith; serving in Christ’s name as we journey with each other to the fullness of eternal life.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “give something for the poor.” Wherever you live in
the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. The
are, in effect, ringing your doorbell.
Your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box will help the poor to celebrate the grace of God’s love this Easter.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (St. Monica Conference) is looking for bilingual members to join the Ministry. If you want to be
part of the very important Ministry in the parish please contact Glenn Gonzales at 832-287-7608. Thank you and God bless you all
for your willingness serve God, through your service to the people in the community.
The Promise of Giving
In an effort to keep from depleting our food supply at our Food Pantry we need your help. Beginning next month, April, we will
begin “The Promise of Giving” food collection project. This project enables everyone in the parish to play an active part in ending
the dreadful epidemic of hunger in our community. Every first Sunday, we will provide brown bags with a list of items we need in
our pantry for that particular month, attached to the bag. There will be someone distributing the bags after each Mass. This is strictly
on a volunteer basis, so please don’t feel obligated. The Word of God says, “Give according to the blessings of your life.” If you feel
that you’ve been blessed, then we ask that you please be a blessing to someone else by taking a bag, purchase the items included on
the list, place the items in the bag, and at some point during that month when you come to Mass, place the bag in the St. Vincent de
Paul food box located in the vestibule of the church. We can’t beat God’s giving no matter how we try. Let’s unite together and
eliminate hunger in our Community.

From The Pastor’s Desk:
Lent has always carried with it the dual character and call for purification and enlightenment. Our response to the call for repentance
always leads to God’s forgiveness, and the realization of how abundant his compassion, mercy and love are. We see this, in the first
reading, in his willingness to set his people free from bondage by the leadership of Moses.
In the gospel, Jesus calls his compatriots to repentance and fruitfulness in holiness of life. And Paul reminds us that the Israelites of
old lived under the cloud (God’s presence) and God’s providence, but they were blinded from seeing his love and giving him
thanks. We are called to be a people who are grateful for God’s care, his mercy and his love. What is the one thing in life that you
think came to you by God’s providence?
The Cardinals of the universal Church are going into Conclave soon, to elect a new pope, the leader of the Church. Just as the Israelites of old needed a leader, the people of God in this age need a leader. So, keep this process in your prayer. Our Parish Lenten Retreat is next Saturday, beginning with the 8a.m. Mass. I strongly encourage all parishioners to attend this retreat. This year, the retreat is in English only, I encourage our Hispanic brothers and sisters who speak and understand English to attend the retreat also.
The Lenten Penance Service is scheduled for Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at 7 p.m. The service will be bilingual. Please, continue
to pray for our sick brothers and sisters, for God’s healing mercy. God bless you today and everyday.
Fr. John Ayang, S.O.L.T.
Sunday Spiritual Thoughts
The Gospel of Luke tells us about the conversation between Jesus and a crowd of People, who narrated Pilate’s brutality to the Galileans who had come to the temple to make a sacrificial offering. Pilate was not a tender-hearted man. There were several bloody
events attributed to him.
In this conversation, Jesus was expected by the people to consider himself like any Galilean, who harshly condemned Pilate’s brutality, and was expected to use his prophetic role against Pilate. The people were just simply waiting for his words, his stand and conviction.
Instead of vengeance and violence obviously seen in the hearts and minds of the people, Jesus appealed to the people around him to
repent; he lifted up the conversation to a higher plane, appealed to the conscience, so that people around him would know what he
was advocating and that was what he was after; namely, conversion of their hearts, which was what they needed, because in their
hearts forces of hate were at work.
Just as Jesus has invited the people around him to repent, he is inviting us to reexamine ourselves, our thoughts. Jesus uses the parable of the Fig tree to implant in our hearts and consciences that conversion of our hearts is urgent, because life and time is precious
in God. This Lenten season is God’s appointed time for us all to rediscover God’s overflowing mercy and loving kindness; it is
God’s time and it is the right time to return to God and bear much fruit in as much as His mercy. We can ask ourselves this question: What attitudes in life do I need to change so to tune up myself according to the ways of God?

Stewardship Reflection
The parable in today’s Gospel clearly warns that we, like the fig tree, will be judged by our fruit. While God mercifully provides us with time and opportunity, let us give witness to our faith with deeds of kindness and generosity!

Feligreses Enfermos y Ancianos!
acontecimientos sangrientos atribuidos a él.

bancas.
