This tribute was written by Rita Padilla-Gutiérrez. The story of the sale of the Tomé Land Grant reached its pinnacle in the late sixties and seventies. What is not known is the anguish, hurt, pain and suffering that all of the women endured. On the one hand, they were supposed to be dedicated and supportive of their husbands. On the other hand, they were to remain silently loyal to their own brothers or fathers who were on the opposite side of the controversy. The incredibly divisive mood of the communities at the time was unbearable. For many of these women, they had to endure the pain of seeing their husbands overindulge to the point of death; they had to withstand daily loud and boisterous discussions in their homes; they had to experience ridicule and criticism; they had to ignore and suppress honest feelings; and, sadly, they had to witness their own sons and daughters live lives that included an absent father. The absence resulted because these fathers were consumed with the “fight.” The women had to find strength to keep the family unit together. I am the daughter of one of these women. They still offer a smile, receive communion, sit next to each other in church. However, you can see the hurt that is still evident when the subject of the sale of the Tomé Land Grant is approached. But because they are strong and courageous women, they offer a precious gift to their families, and that is that survival must come from inside. It is my duty to honor the women of the lost Tomé Land Grant. Their story must be told. 6-1 NUEVO MEXICO ¿HASTA CUANDO? At the age of eight he was a herdboy for a flock of goats belonging to don Juan Policarpio Romero and continued as such until he married Rosario Frésquez of Peñasco. After he was married, he practiced carpentry making coffins for the dead during the great smallpox plague of the year 1875. There were days in which four or five deaths occurred, and don Manuel could not make coffins enough to supply the demand. In the year 1877 don Policarpio sent don Manuel Jesús Vásquez in company with other men to the plains on a buffalo hunt. This group of men met in Peñasco on the 15th day of November, 1877. They set out the same day for Mora. From there they went to Ocaté. From this place, they traveled as far as the Colorado River. They were traveling towards the state of Oklahoma and reached Chico, also in Colfax County. At this place, they camped for a few days in order to rest their oxen. A meeting was called with the object of placing one of them at the head of the expeditions, votes were cast and don Albino Ortega of the Llano de San Juan received a majority of votes. From this time on, nothing was done except at the express command of don Albino Ortega. They passed close to the site of the city of Clayton 6-7 and continued across Texas to enter Oklahoma at a point called Punto de Agua. It took them a month. At a point called Pilares, a buffalo was killed which furnished them meat for a few days. From Pilares, the expedition traveled for three or four days more until it reached a river called Río de las Nutrias. The hunt continued until they had killed enough buffaloes to fill fifty carts with the meat. The hunt was conducted on horseback, and lances were the weapons used. Some of the men designated as skinners followed the hunt driving burros before them. These men skinned the fat cows only. They would pack the buffalo meat into camp where they would cut it into convenient sized strips after which they would slice it very thin and hang it up to dry on poles. After the meat had cooled, it was spread on hides and tramped on until it was drained of blood and then, as we have already stated, the cecinas were hung on poles to dry in the sun. After it had dried, they would stack it up. As soon as the Commander thought that sufficient meat had been prepared to fill all of the oxcarts, he would give orders to cease killing buffaloes. Some would load the meat on the cart while the owner of the cart would trample it down so as to get as much of a load on the cart as he possibly could and all that the oxen would be able to haul home. The following morning, the long trek home was begun in earnest. The actual hunting of the buffaloes lasted one month, the trip to and from the hunting grounds 6-8 required a month’s travel each, so that the whole trip lasted three months. It took three months of that winter for the entire trip. Don Manuel Jesús Vásquez, who is alive today at the age of 83, says that he never recollects having seen the inside of a school house, but that his patrón taught him how to sign his name. Don Juan Policarpio left, or designated, don Manuel as one of his heirs and the sons of don Juan Policarpio Romero gave him four goats and asked him to sign a paper which attested that he had received his share of the inheritance, and he, not knowing how to read, signed. The Probate Judge at Taos called him before him and asked don Manuel if he was content and satisfied, and, upon his answering that he was, he signed the paper or document. One game was done with arches. The player would try to get the marble to enter a given arch. Each arch had a certain number of points. The winner was the first one with 45 points. In another game, the players shot their marbles into a circle 10 feet in diameter. They tried to knock another marble out of the circle to score one point. The winner was the one with the most points at the end. The oldest marbles found are from 3000 B.C. in Egypt. Ringer Ringer is played with a 10 foot diameter circle which is scratched in the dirt. Players put an equal number of marbles in the ring. Then each player tries to hit the others’ marbles out of the circle with a shooter. Each marble hit out becomes the property of the one who shot it out. The player keeps shooting until he/she misses knocking out a marble. A marble which sits on the scratched ring is considered to be out. If a player knocks out several marbles, all marbles become his/hers. The winner is the one with the most marbles at the end of the game. A Final Question: Is losing your marbles so aggravating that it makes you crazy? Is that why the phrase “lose your marbles” means to 6-11 go crazy? COLMOS del libro Sonreír es Vivir ¿Cuál es el colmo de un dentista?
