Rev. Richard Bozzelli Intensive Pastoral Spanish Tell us a little about yourself: I am a priest of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, ordained 20 years. I have spent most of my ministry in the City of Baltimore, with about five years in the suburbs. I have been a pastor for nearly fourteen years, and an associate pastor for five years. What brought you to MACC? In the three years before my sabbatical (July 2010 thru June 2013), I pastored three parishes in Glen Burnie, Maryland. One of the parishes had about 600 Spanish-speaking families and a Spanish-speaking priest to minister to them. I had studied Spanish in high school and college, so I was able to celebrate the Mass and other sacraments, so long as I had a text. I struggled to write homilies in Spanish (and almost always needed someone to review my work), and I found hearing confessions a challenge – both in understanding the penitent and in responding to his or her concerns. I came to MACC with the goal of improving my speaking and understanding of Spanish and increasing my confidence in hearing confessions and preaching. Describe your experience at MACC: MACC provided a wonderful environment in which to review and improve my Spanish. The class sizes were small, and the instructors well-versed in their subjects. The program not only offered an adult-learning model for teaching language skills, it also exposed students to the cultural aspects of ministry to and with Spanish-speaking people. I particularly appreciated the program’s focus on pastoral care and communications, and it was fun to work with clergy, seminarians, and lay ministers from across the nation. The daily Masses (alternating between English and Spanish) provided an opportunity, not only to practice my language skills in Spanish, but also encouraged me to support other students who were learning English – all in a pastoral and prayerful setting. Language students were also invited to participate in MACC’s other pastoral programs – e.g., workshops on multiculturalism and evangelization, retreats, etc. – some of which were in Spanish, others of which were in English. These workshops broadened my ministry horizons and allowed me to practice Spanish outside the classroom. The program was intense – full days of classwork and conversation with homework – but well worth the effort. I left MACC with my comprehension of Spanish – listening and reading – having increased dramatically and my speaking and writing skills having improved significantly. I highly recommend MACC’s Intensive Pastoral Spanish program. MACC News MACC Faculty 7 Meet our Deacon Aspirants, Candidates...
