School is in full swing, so now we start our Family Faith Formation, Youth Ministry, That Man is You, bible studies, and much more. Please be patient with us going through the time/talent ministry sign-up sheets. Kathy is making many corrections to keep our lists reliable. I hope you take advantage of all the opportunities to get involved and your children in Family Faith Formation and Youth Ministry. We are blessed with so many good people working on these teams to pull off the opening events. Have a Blessed Week! Father Paul WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Every week in our bulletin I see a Mass on Sunday for the people of the parish. Is it there to fill in an intention, or is someone requesting it every week? The pastor of a parish is charged with the well-being of the community. There are many aspects of this task, including the physical, spiritual, and social concerns of maintaining and building a community of faith. Each week, by church law, the pastor offers Mass on Sunday for the people of the parish. It is a tangible and practical way that the pastor prays for those entrusted to his care. No one requests it, nor is it offered only when there is an open intention. In fact, the pastor may not accept a stipend for it. The spiritual needs of the people are the primary concern of the pastor. His prayer for them is the first way he cares for them. You may also see Mass intentions for those listed in a memorial, or deceased members of the parish, or past members of a group or organization. These too are ways the pastor remembers the needs of all the members of his parish, asking the Lord to bless and protect them, bringing us all to eternal life. WE OFFER OUR PRAYERS FOR: All the homeless, the unemployed, the military, the addicted, the grieving, the imprisoned, and the physically and emotionally ill. Page 4 Your Gifts Help SVdPS Fill Gaps in Income After suffering a stroke, a local middle-aged man lost his ability to work temporary jobs, his primary source of income. With little income, he was unable to pay his cell phone bill, a phone needed to contact and schedule his many doctor's appointments. The St. Vincent de Paul Society helped him apply for Safelink while also paying for his phone service until the new emergency and free phone service is activated. Vincentians also assisted him in getting a copy of his birth certificate from another state so that he could apply for disability. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Jn 15:12 St. Peregrine Cancer Support Group Meeting This multi-parish group of cancer survivors was formed to offer a place for individuals, families, caregivers, and anyone concerned about cancer to meet with others to share information, stories and pray together. They will meet next on Tuesday, September 13, at 10 AM in St. Ambrose/St. Catherine rooms in Apostles Bay. Location of the meetings rotate from Holy Apostles, St. John in Johnsburg, St. Patrick in McHenry and St. Peter in Spring Grove. For details contact Jeanne Fraser at 815-388-0164 or [email protected]. All are welcome and invited to attend. Holy Apostles Mission Day—October 22 Many of us would love to reach out and be the face of God by serving others in need but are unable to take a mission trip to do so. Mission Day is an opportunity for everyone to serve people in our community just for a day. Set aside Saturday, October 22, to work on a team of parish members to give a hand to someone who needs assistance maintaining their homes. Register online on the home page of our website thechurchofholyapostles.org. Are you or do you know someone in our community (need not be parish members) who needs help at their home with cleaning, yard work/landscaping, painting, or light electrical, plumbing or construction repairs? Let us add your needs to our “to do” list on Mission Day. (We cannot guarantee that all requests for help will be met.) Contact Joe Filpi at 815385-0921 or [email protected] with your requests for help. Feeling God’s Call toServe as a Deacon?
