A Letter from the PTA Co-Presidents
WPMS PTA Newsletter Eastview Highlands One School Two Campuses White Plains, NY May 2015 A Letter from the PTA Co-Presidents Denise Serra, Highlands Kristen Larkin, Eastview S pring Fever! Yes, we all have it and it signals that the end of the school year is nearing. While January was quiet, we had a joint PTA meeting at Eastview in February. Our speaker was Beverly Pierce, a licensed clinical social worker ( LCSW) of Student Assistance Services. This meeting was held for parents only to raise our awareness of drug and alcohol use by our children. Ms. Pierce provided a show and tell of paraphernalia, a power point presentation and discussed the signs, symptoms and red flags we should be looking for on drug use along with information on what to do. To our shock, Middle School is when our kids start to use alcohol, drugs and cigarettes, not High School. The statistics were unnerving and your income level and family dynamics do not matter. Ms. Pierce spoke of pill parties where kids grab their parents prescription medication, put in a bowl and just pick from there, of ways kids hide alcohol in seemingly innocuous containers in plain sight and the use of e-cigarettes. It was an eye-opening event and proved that it is never too early to be aware and to start a conversation with our kids. No one is immune; the statistics were staggering! We have one last joint PTA meeting on Tuesday, May 5th to vote on PTA Board members for the upcoming school year. We have a lot of graduating parents and the positions are far from filled. Here’s where you come in, below is a list of positions that are open at each school. Highlands Open Positions •Co-President •VP Parent Volunteer Coordinator •VP Programs •Corresponding Secretary •PTA Webpage •Spirit Wear Committee •8th Grade Committee •Bike/Walk Committee Eastview Open Positions •Co-President •Corresponding Secretary •VP Membership •Ways and Means (Fundraising) •VP Volunteer Coordinator •Spirit Wear Committee •Bike/Walk Committee •Boxtops Hopefully you’re able to volunteer; if so, please contact Denise Serra at [email protected] for Highlands and Kristen Larkin at kristenrit22@gmail. com for Eastview. To date, both Eastview and Highlands have provided over $8,000 in grants to our teachers to provide enrichment activities that tie in with the curriculum. The classroom setting is great, but to be able to experience life with all sensors fired is PRICELESS. With the success of our last fundraiser, Mixed Bag, we hope to distribute another $3,000. Without your support we would not have been able to do this. We thank you! While we don’t have any further fundraisers coming up this year, you can continue to help in the following ways: Box Tops – keep them coming and save them during the summer for submission next year. Target – If you have a Target red card you can designate your school and Target will donate up to 1% of your REDcard purchases at Target stores in the U.S and at Target.com. http://www.target.com/ redcard/benefits-target-rewards Stop & Shop – While you have to register for this program each year, which runs from October – March, put it on your calendar to sign up for the school that starts September, 2015. http:// stopandshop.com/aplus/register-card/ ShopRite – Also has a rewards program that involves box-top rewards and a select purchase list. This program runs from August-July of each school year (you can still register – it ends July 31, 2015). http://www.shoprite.com/ shoprite-for-my-school/ Of course if you’re aware of any other rewards programs that our schools can benefit from please share your finding. Continue to send Lydia Kris at Highlands [email protected] and Jessica Fiore at Eastview jfkdj99@gmail. com your email address to receive our email blasts of events. Please feel free to contact us as well with suggestions or requests not only for the remainder of the year, but for the upcoming school year as well Denise Serra at Highlands deniseomserra@ gmail.com and Kristen Larkin at Eastview [email protected] Thank you for your continued support! Now, what camp to choose? Principals’ Corner I t seems hard to believe but the end of the 2014-2015 school year is just around the corner. The school plays are over, spring sports/ intramurals are in full swing and the days are progressively becoming longer and warmer. We are in full gear as we quickly move through the final two months of school. As these hectic days begin, let us focus on the importance of “finishing strong”. As the daylight hours increase, there is a tendency to spend more time at the ballgame, stay longer at a friend’s house and in general, enjoy the beautiful weather. Please help your child stay focused on academics as she/he senses the upcoming summer months. Students and parents should be aware that the final exams, Regents Exams, culminating projects and tests are scheduled throughout the month of June. Below, we have listed any exams/ tests that occur in June. (Sixth grade tests occur over the two days indicated. They are not final exams.) Thank you for your continued support! They were donated by the White Plains Beautification Foundation in honor of their 50th anniversary, and planted by the Community Service Club. Since they are bulbs they will come up every year reminding us of the Eastview Class of 2015! Team C Science Spectacular By Taralie Gabaud W hat do you get when you put Ms.Messina and a whole bunch of Team C students together? An incredible science fair -- that’s what. Boy, what a science fair the Team C staff and students pulled off! After many months of preparing for a science spectacular, the hard work of the Team C students had finally paid off. The boards were up and graded, and the jitterbugs caused by speaking in front of people had started. On December 5, 2014, Team C students walked into the second floor gym to see where their projects were and if they got a spot next to their best friends. When everyone finally got to where they were placed, it was so cool to see all the other projects that stood between them. Projects varied from the topics of bubblegum, electricity run by lemons, how much sugar is in your soda, cotton candy, gummy bears, thumbs, video games, and even basketball. It was so amazing for everyone to realize that there could be so many options for people. These students really deserved all each other’s praise. They were preparing for that day since early November. All the stress of thinking about an idea, writing everything down, typing everything, putting it all on the board and organizing it, and finally, handing it in on time so you wouldn’t lose points was worth it. Just writing about it makes me feel quite anxious. However, all the painful stress was finally OVER. The gym was decorated and organized beautifully. It was so beautiful that it made you wonder: how did they do it all? What was so surprising was how all the boards were neatly and carefully set together in place. All the students needed to do was look and stand proudly in front of their projects. At the end of it all an award ceremony was held for the 1st place winners, the 2nd place winners, the 3rd place winners, and the honorable mentions. Anyone who didn’t receive an award, however, did not have to feel so crummy about themselves. Everyone left the gym holding a lovely designed certificate. At the end of it all, Team C was congratulated and rewarded with a delicious ice cream party with some of the best ice cream I’ve definitely ever had. However, none of this would be possible without the help of our wonderful Team C staff. I’d just like to thank Ms.Messina for organizing the entire science spectacular. I’d also like to thank Mrs. Neglia, Mrs. Bassano, Mrs. Anastacio, Mrs. Jackson, Mr. LaFiandra, Mr. Razzak, Ms. Walters, Ms. Cristiano, and Ms. Fleischman. Let’s not forget Eastview’s wonderful custodians who without their help the science would also not be possible. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED MAKE THE SCIENCE FAIR POSSIBLE! WE APPRECIATE IT!!! SIXTH GRADE SCIENCE at EASTVIEW W hile learning about the respiratory system, students demonstrated how the diaphragm controls our breathing by building a lung model. We used rubber gloves, bottles and balloons to construct a “lung”. The lung models enabled us to observe what happens to our lungs when our diaphragm contracts and relaxes. 3 Emphasis on Eastview Eastview School Recognized for Tolerance Efforts By Julia Probber Eastview International Night – January 28th, 2015 By Judith Plant B Designated ‘Mix It Up’ Model School by the Southern Poverty Law Center T he Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance program has named Eastview School as a Mix It Up Model School for its exemplary efforts to foster respect and understanding among its students and throughout its campus during the 2014-15 school year. Eastview School is among 104 schools to receive the honor. Special thanks to our students on the Anti-Bullying Committee: Carina Espirito, Pedro Carpinteyro, Sabrina Koff, Paolo Medelius, Julian Tabb, Jordan Dowdell and Caroline Schwarz for planning our lunch events. “We are delighted to recognize Eastview School,” said Teaching Tolerance Director Maureen Costello. “Mix It Up Model Schools have found innovative ways to create school environments where respect and inclusiveness are core values. They all serve as great examples of how a school— any school—can cultivate these values among their students, faculty and staff.” The Teaching Tolerance program has hosted Mix It Up at Lunch Day for the past 14 years to help students demonstrate the importance of respecting each other’s differences. This year’s event will be held on October 27. Schools are encouraged to register at tolerance.org/mix-it-up/add. Mix It Up at Lunch Day is a simple call to action. By asking students to move out of their comfort zones and connect with someone new over lunch, the event encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries. Many schools plan activities for the entire day, and some use the event to kick off yearlong explorations of social divisions. The Mix It Up Model Schools met five criteria: They each hosted a Mix it Up at Lunch Day during the 2014-15 school year; they included different members of the school’s community—cafeteria staff, aides, administrators, teachers and students—in organizing the event; they followed up with at least two additional Mix It Up-related programs or events on campus; they publicized Mix It Up at Lunch Day or celebrated inclusiveness with posters, announcements and other media; and their event was seen by students and school officials as a success. onsoir y Bienvenidos. Eastview’s International Night began with students costumed in traditional attire from other cultures calling out multilingual greetings in celebration of the new languages that they are learning. Upon reaching the gym, opportunities for sampling foods from around the world were aplenty, not to mention Mardi Gras Carnival mask-making. The evening continued with dance performances by current students, alumni and a semiprofessional Chinese dance troupe. Students posing at the Mardi Gras/ Carnival “Kings” (i.e. Mr. Dixon and Mr. Cloherty) ended by dancing through the audience and throwing beads during the traditional sing along. Many families and staff helped to make this celebration a great success! A mysterious, masked PHANTOM has been spotted at our morning assemblies at Eastview! It’s no ordinary phantom, but rather, the Phantom of the Opera! Ms. Mazziotti is sponsoring a “Phantom Fun Facts” contest at Eastview. Students are invited to submit interesting facts, or plot descriptions from Phantom of the Opera, in full sentences, with their names clearly listed at the top of the page. Each student who contributes will receive raffle tickets, for a chance to win their first choice of seats, with a friend of their choosing, on the bus to the show. Lots of our students have already contributed fun facts! We hope that more will join in! As students have said, “Now that we know more about the show, we are even MORE excited to see it!” Pull Together! The Community Service Club is collecting pull tabs and pop tops for the Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald House is a place for families of young patients at the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital to stay to support their children. It is funded only by donations. We will be collecting pull tabs in the Eastview cafeteria, outside the main office, and in room 334 until June 18. We have over 19,000, on our way to a million! 4 Hoops for Heart at Highlands O n Friday, February 13th, Highlands’ students participated in Hoops for Heart. They raised over $3400. We have some extremely generous and caring students in this building! Donations go to the American Heart Association towards research to assist in heart disease prevention, medication, and surgical advancements. We had over 100 8th grade participants and over 100 7th grade participants. This year we had the most participants that we’ve had in the past 10 years. The PTA donated waters and heart healthy foods like pretzels, fruit snacks, apples and granola bars. Students were able to participate in basketball activities (knockout/games) hang out listen/dance to music, jump rope or hula hoop. Talents Galore Highlands Highlights By Nikolas O’Hanlon T he Highlands Talent Show took place on March 6th in the auditorium at Highlands Middle School. The MC’s for the Talent Show were Pilar Ceron and Jacob Furry, who introduced each act. During the show students clapped enthusiastically to a beat or waved their hands in the air during several of the performances. Overall the crowd really enjoyed the show. There were a total of 15 acts. Most of them involved singing or playing an instrument, and also included a Shrek teaser directed by three faculty members. The first two acts – “Royals” and “Journey Medley” were sung by the Select Choir, and were conducted by Mrs. Davila. The rest of the acts were performed by many highly talented Highlands students. I loved it when the crowd clapped to the beat. After each performance the audience clapped loudly. The Talent Show was a truly outstanding group of performances which were awesome, fun, and interesting. A special shout out to Ms. Sette, Ms. Maffei for organizing the show and to Mrs. Davila, Mrs. Irlen, Mr. Veeder, Dr. Montgomery, and the administration for contributing to the Talent Show and allowing the Talent Show to happen. National French Contest O n Tuesday, March 10th, a dedicated group of French students in Ms. Miller’s and Ms. Wagner’s classes showed their enthusiasm to their French studies and challenged themselves by participating in the National French Contest. Every year the American Association of Teachers of French sponsors the contest, which is an hour-long 70-question multiple choice test to challenge students’ skills in listening, vocabulary and reading. After the contest students shared their opinions while snacking on cupcakes saying it was a very fair challenge, not too easy and not too difficult. Furthermore, they liked the fact that the activities grew more challenging as the test went on. Students will get their ranking results in late April and if they qualify for national or Westchester chapter ranking they are eligible to get a prize at the award ceremony. Ms. Miller and Ms. Wagner are very proud of these dedicated and growth-minded students. Félicitations! Turn Your Cereal Boxes Into Art! Artist Michael Albert will be visiting Highlands School this May to work with our students. We are in need of cereal boxes, granola boxes, any colorful boxes with lettering to turn into a wonderful school art project. The finished project will be turned into an art display for the media center and posters that will be available for sale. Collection boxes are set up in the main office, the media center and Ms. Gilman’s room. 5 Highlands Highlights O n March 11, 2015, the Programming Club, Science Club and Student Organization took a trip to Sony Wonder. Students had the chance to explore exciting interactive exhibits that bring technology and creativity together to make learning experiential, entertaining and fun. C ongratulations to the Girls’ Modified Basketball Team for an excellent season. They became a team that believed in each other and played well together. The girls ended with 10 wins – 2 losses. Shrek Jr. T he cast and crew of “Shrek Jr.” lit up the stage at Highlands Auditorium on March 12 and 13th for our Spring Musical! The students worked on their acting, singing and dancing skills starting in January and dazzled the audiences on both evenings. Their dedication and hard work really paid off and they made us all proud! We’re already looking forward to next year’s production. Highlands Jazz Ensemble T he Highlands Jazz Ensemble braved the cold and rain on March 14th and did a wonderful job performing at the White Plains St. Patrick’s Day Parade! It was wet but everyone had a great time and performed some excellent music for the appreciative crowd! 6 Musical Notes Eastview on Broadway 2015 All-County Band & Orchestra “... and I won’t quit ‘til I’m a star on Broadway!” M s. Mazziotti wishes to congratulate our 5 All-County Band members! They auditioned on solos in December and were chosen from hundreds of other musicians in the county, to perform at SUNY Purchase in March. The concert was AMAZING! Thanks for your hard work! Elementary All-County Band: •Sophia Barrett - Clarinet •Stephen Holden - Tuba •Paolo Medellius – Bari Sax •Cathy Stanton – Clarinet – 1st chair!!! •Julian Tabb – French horn Elementary All-County Orchestra: •Annabelle Choi - Violin •Jessica Zdanoff - Violin •Emily Gardner (who did solos on two different instruments!) – Viola and Bass •Isabella Michell - Cello •Viktorya Jones - Violin •Megan Mulvey - Cello •Samantha Martinez - Cello •Max Galkin - Violin •Ashleigh Nutt - Voice •Makayla Dawson - Violin •Emma Bernabei - Violin •Sydney Lonker - Violin •Melanie Telesmanic - Violin •Alana Fishbach - Cello •Nathaniel Fields – Cello W e are sure that every audience member at this year’s outstanding production of “Eastview on Broadway” would agree... these talented Eastview students are stars! From start to finish, this show was packed with thrilling musical and theatrical performances. Each ensemble performance required the students to sing highly complicated music while performing very intricate choreography. The many months of practice and dedication truly paid off! Our spectacular show began with the powerful ensemble number “When I Get My Name in Lights” from “The Boy from Oz.” Many other ensemble numbers followed, such as the well-known “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from “Mary Poppins,” “Corner of the Sky” from “Pippin,” “On Broadway” from “A Chorus Line,” “Children Will Listen” from “Into the Woods” and “Don’t Stop Believin’” from “Rock of Ages.” Throughout the show, our talented emcees, Zichia Harris and Brennan Hogan, shared with the audience interesting facts about each number and some humor, too! The talented performers also selected sixteen “spotlight solos” for this year’s show. All of the solos that were performed demonstrated the tremendous talent and passion that they each possess for the performing arts. However, a show of this caliber would not have been possible without the talented and dedicated students on our creative teams. These students made an enormous contribution to the success of this show in the technical areas of lighting, backstage management, makeup, costumes, photography and public relations. We were all so impressed with the focused effort that each student brought to the creative teams! This was certainly an event that brought the entire school community together. The faculty and staff dedicated countless hours to this year’s show, after school and on the weekends, and we thank everyone for their many contributions. Thank you to the PTA for all of your support! We would especially like to thank the PTA for your assistance and donations for this year’s cast party. It was a fabulous party and a perfect way to wrap up the students’ experience. The video of “Eastview on Broadway 2015” is now posted on the White Plains district homepage. Just click on Student/ Family Shortcuts, then click on WPPS TV, then click on Concerts/Plays. We have also included the link to the video here: http://www. whiteplainspublicschools.org/Page/598 It is also being shown on Channel 46 on Verizon and Channel 77 on Cablevision. Our final ensemble number in this year’s show was “Don’t Stop Believin’.” At Eastview, we know that our students will never stop believing in their dreams and will achieve great success in all that they do! 7 Musical Notes All-City Band M arch was national Music In Our Schools Month, and boy did we make music! On Wednesday, March 25th, 100 of our Eastview 6th grade band members, led by Ms. Mazziotti, participated in the White Plains AllCity Band Festival. Over 500 student band musicians from each of the district schools joined together to put on an incredible show! Each group performed pieces individually and the grand finale, “Overture to 1812,” had the 500 hundred musicians on the stage, in the pit AND in the aisles. If you missed it, you can catch it on the district website under “Offices,” and then “WPPSTV.” POR FAVOR ACOMPAÑENOS A CELEBRAR EL SHOW DE ARTE DE TODA LA CIUDAD DEL 2015 EN LA RECEPCION DE APERTURA EL 28 DE MAYO EN EL SEGUNDO PISO DE LA BIBLIOTECA DE WHITE PLAINS PRESENTANDO ILUSTRACIONES CREADAS POR MAS DE 400 ESTUDIANTES DEL K AL 12AVO GRADO DE LAS ESCUELAS PUBLICAS DE WHITE PLAINS Tiger ROAR News would like to thank the volunteer team for all of their hard work in assembling and mailing all of the newsletters. 8 NYSSMA Musical Festival O n Friday, April 17th and Saturday, April 19th many of our Eastview band and orchestra students competed at the NYSSMA Music Festival, held at White Plains High School.
