N” for Nazarene We are all Iraqi Christians! For the first time in 2000 years there is not a single Christian left in Mosul. The Iraqi Christians had to choose, following the ultimatum, between death and exile. Before they were presented with the choice between forcible conversion, exile or death, the Islamic extremist marked all the houses of the Christians with the symbol ﻥ, often surrounded by a circle. The symbol ( )ﻥis a 14th letter of the Arabic alphabet and represents the letter “N” in our alphabet. It is the first letter of the word “Nazarene,” which the Muslims have used since the seventh century to identify Christians. This letter of the Arabic alphabet has been painted on the front of houses belonging to Christians, while on the front of Shi’ite Muslim homes the letter “R” has been painted, meaning Rwafidh (Protestants, “those who reject”). Today there are no Christians left in the second-largest city of Iraq! Their hasty flight has left thousands of refugees with nothing. They have lost everything! WELCOME TO ST. PAGE FOUR TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME We Cry Out A Prayer for Iraq “And he answered, ‚You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.‘” — Luke 10: 27 Gracious God, We join our cries today with the people of Iraq: Who have seen too much violence, Who have seen too much war, Who have seen too much displacement, Who have seen too much mourning And borne far too great a burden. We cry out for peace. We cry out for stability. We cry out for healing. We cry out for neighbors living as neighbors, as we were meant to live. For whether we call ourselves Christian or Muslim, Sunni or Shiite, Jew or Arab, Kurd or Mandaean, Whatever the name, When we take up arms against our neighbor, When we curse our neighbor, Even when we so much as turn from our neighbor, We shame ourselves before you. So, we turn in prayer toward our neighbors in Iraq in their time of great need. In solidarity with these sisters and brothers, we cry out to you: Let there be joy where there is mourning. Let there be hope where there is fear. Let there be stillness where there is violence. And let there be peace. A just and lasting peace. Lord, your grace abounds. May it rest upon the peoples of Iraq today and always. Amen Religious Education classes begin September 17th and September 20th. There are still a few spots available on Wednesday evenings. VIGÉSIMO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO CALLED TO ACT IN GOD’S NAME “Let all the nations praise you!” (Psalm 67:4) today’s psalm response exclaims. In the psalms and other Hebrew scriptures, this kind of invocation is actually an invitation to God to act, to intervene in human lives in a manner that will cause everyone—not just the Chosen People—to give praise. Stated a bit more strongly, it is something of a “put up or shut up” challenge to God, the sort of strong statement the psalmists of Israel, trusting in their intimate and loving relationship with God, were not afraid to make. The Gospel has its own exclamation, announcing the appearance of the Canaanite woman with “Behold!” (Matthew 15:22) “Behold!” is a scriptural flag that tells us that God is about to act or announce something through an individual or a situation. In the case of Jesus, God was going to act through this woman, whom nobody among Jesus’ followers would have believed to be an agent of the divine will. Like the psalmists, we might passively inform or perhaps even actively challenge God to do something so that everyone will come to belief, but God will always turn the tables on us. It becomes our calling, our duty (as it was for Jesus) to behold the situations and persons of our daily lives so that God can act through us, so the Kingdom can be announced through our living. (Psalm 67). Second Reading — The gifts and the calling of God are unable to be revoked (Romans 11:13-15, 29-32). Gospel — Recognizing the Canaanite woman’s great faith, Jesus told her, “It shall be done as you wish” (Matthew 15:21-28). SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Tuesday: St. John Eudes Wednesday: St. Bernard Thursday: St. Pius X Friday: Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary Saturday: St. Rose of Lima; Blessed Virgin Mary TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In many church buildings constructed in the early twentieth century, there is a window or statue of Pope St. Pius X. Often, these windows were pur- PAGE FIVE chased with coins collected by grateful children, since in 1910 a decree admitted much younger children to First Communion. Before then, only teenagers were customarily confirmed and then admitted to the Eucharist. What we often think is ancient practice in fact sometimes has fairly shallow roots, in this case only ten decades. For centuries, Communion had marked the end of formal religious education, but a hundred years ago, Pius X located it at the point at which a child could express a desire for the sacrament and receive it with understanding. In 1917 a new code of canon law determined that age to be about seven, and this practice was observed almost everywhere until the beginning of the Second Vatican Council forty years ago. In a growing number of dioceses, recent practice has restored the sacramental order that Pius X’s generous decree upset, and increasingly confirmation is celebrated before First Communion. But the gift Pius gave to the children of the Roman Church remains firm: everywhere we admit children to the Lord’s table. Where the traditional order has been restored, seven-year-old children are confirmed before First Communion. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. GRATITUDE O Thou who has given us so much, mercifully grant us one thing more—a grateful heart. —George Herbert GOOD EXAMPLE A faithful Christian, illumined by the rays of grace like a crystal, ought to illumine his neighbor with the light of good example, through word and deed. —St. Anthony Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 17, 2014 Observe what is right, do what is just; for my salvation is about to come, my justice, about to be revealed. — Isaiah 56:1 PAGE SIX TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME LLAMADOS A ACTUAR EN EL NOMBRE DE DIOS “¡Que todos los pueblos te alaben!” — Isaías 56:1 VIGÉSIMO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO PAGE SEVEN Youth Ministry/LIFE TEEN LIFE Nights are meetings that immediately follow the Youth Mass on Sunday evening from 7:00 - 8:45 PM and take place in the parish hall and are an integral part of a comprehensive youth ministry experience.
