St. Clare, August 11– Patroness of Sore Eyes Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis, had also the honor of giving birth to St. Clare, his spiritual daughter, She was born in 1193. From her childhood she desired to consecrate herself to Jesus Christ. Having heard of St. Francis and his sanctity, she contrived to be taken to him by a pious matron. The conversation of St. Francis made her resolve to abandon the world. On March 18, 1212 together with another young woman, she went to the Portiuncula, where St. Francis prayed, and received the penitential habit. At first St. Francis placed her in a Benedictine convent of nuns. She persevered in her resolution, in spite of the opposition of her friends and relatives. Later her sister Agnes joined her. St. Francis then place them in a separate house. Soon after her mother and several other ladies, some of high nobility, united themselves to her. The foundation of Poor Cares, or the Second Order of St. Francis, was thus laid. Within a few years St. Clare founded a number of other monasteries and her Order spread to Germany and Bohemia. The austerities these religious women practiced had scarcely ever been known among their sex. Together with other mortifications, their fast was perpetual. Such was the spirit of poverty of St. Clare that when, after her profession, she fell heiress to the large fortune of her father, she gave all of it to the poor. She would accept no revenue for her monastery. When the army of Frederick II was devastating the valley of Spoleto some of the soldiers placed a ladder against the convent wall. St. Clare caused herself to be carried to a window, and holding the monstrance with the Blessed Sacrament in sight of the enemies she prostrated herself before the Eucharistic God. Her prayer was heard, and the enemies, struck with a sudden panic, fled in terror. St. Clare’s life came to an end, August 11, 1253 Pro-life rosary Come join us on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 9:30 a.m. in the parish center as we pray the rosary for the sanctity of all life, from the moment of conception to a natural death. Gracias. © 2016 CRI • PO Box 6360, Beaufort, SC 29903 • 800 992-2144 • www.ChildrensBulletins.com Ages 3-6 August 7, 2016 • Luke 12:32-48 ST. MARY ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH - KINGMAN , AZ What a wonderful occasion we have as we anticipate the month of September. You will remember that on the Solemnity of the Triumph of the Holy Cross of our Lord Jesus, September 14, 2014, Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted consecrated our new church building. It was a great mile stone in our journey as a parish since 1906. When visitors come from other parts of the State of Arizona or from other places of the country, they marvel how beautiful our new church building is. You, the faithful ones of Saint Mary Roman Catholic Church, certainly should feel a holy pride in what you have accomplished, what with your good will, your perseverance, your prayers and love, and your monetary contributions. We would do well to continue this great project, which God in His goodness has assigned to us. You know that we still have an outstanding mortgage of $598,107.12 as of July 3, 2016. The Finance Committee, in conjunction with Fr. Matthew, would like to make a tremendous effort in reducing this outstanding mortgage, in honor of our Second Anniversary of the consecration of our new church building. We propose that during the months of August and September we try to collect $50,000.00 as an extraordinary payment of our mortgage. Imagine how much less the amount of interest paid would be, because we would be paying off a significant amount on the principal. Of course, the interest rate remains the same. And the sooner we can free ourselves from this debt, the sooner we may be free to dream of other wonderful projects for the well being of our parish. For example, do you think that one day in the far future that we might open a Catholic grade school? How that school would pass on the Catholic Faith to our children and would inspire many of them to consider the priesthood or consecrated religious life for our salvation and that of their own souls! Now is the time, however, to start throwing your thousand dollars or multiples of thousands of dollars toward the reduction of our mortgage, and as an anniversary gift to your parish. Just drop your gift in the collection basket marked for the mortgage payment, or mail it into the parish office. You can do it! We can all do it, if we sacrifice a little of our savings and offer a tremendous amount of our savings from the banks of our love. There will be more information forthcoming. S T.
