The one who perseveres to the end will be saved – Matt 24:13
What are we to make of all this recent violence and tragedy we see in the news? Usually
its something we see when there is a conventional war between nations or in a gang
ridden areas (such as the Westside of Chicago or certain parts of LA) - As long as you are
not a soldier on the front lines (or the fighting or gang violence wasn’t happening in your
neighborhood), you wouldn’t experience such violence as a civilian. But at least in this
country of the USA, ever since Columbine, it seems the battleground can be anywhere
and everywhere. And its frequency is increasing.
From the Orlando Pulse Nite Club massacre, the tragic and undeserved fatal shooting deaths of African
American men in Minnesota and Baton Rouge at the hands of police, the innocent sniper style killings of
5 Dallas police officers, to the Nice France truck killings of at least 84 innocent people (including
children) at an Independence Day Bastille Day Celebration, let alone what happened on the streets of
Paris France and not far from here (San Bernadino) - Where is our safe haven, if your African American
man, a police officer, or just an ordinary citizen about their harmless business? Are we defenseless? Some
might even say this chaos are signs of the “end of the world.”
May I offer a few things we can do! First, turn to God’s Word over anything or anyone else to guide you
through this: [Matt 24:6] “For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and they will
deceive many. You will hear of wars and reports of wars; see that you are not alarmed, for these things
must happen, but it will not yet be the end…there will be famines and earthquakes from place to place.
All these are the beginning of the labor pains.” The fact is that we do live in the end times, but we have
been so since the time of Jesus Ascension into heaven (“Labor pains” of God’s Kingdom building times for
the past 2000 years). For now, what matters is that we know that the Lord Jesus is our ultimate safe
haven we turn to whether it be due to the violence the world subjects us to or in seeking mercy when we
do violence to ourselves and others.
Second, God does appoint leaders over us to govern and protect us. This fall is a Presidential Election
year. Some have said they will not vote at all – But if you don’t vote, God will not have a say (through
you) who our next leader will be to guide and protect us. Catholic Faithful Citizenship requires that
we form our conscience in line with Catholic social and moral principles before casting our
vote.
Third, we need to lift up in prayer those men and their families within the African American
community whose lives are clearly more at risk in this nation than any other community – Indeed, they
are our brothers in whom we desire to live free of fear. We also need to pray for our police officers too
who risk their lives to protect and serve us. They ultimately feel the pressure of having to deal with
anything and everything that our society can’t handle. We need to pray for their safety and strength to
deal with the pressures. Some of our prayers need go for individuals and families right here within
our own community who have experienced violence and even killings due to gang or other criminal
violence – We pray for all the innocent victims and their families of terrorists attacks – and in
mercy, we pray for those who harbor such hate in their hearts – May they come to know of The Peace
of Jesus Christ.
Lastly, what else can we do to bring peace to this world of violence and chaos? The answer is that it
begins with you – in how you treat those around you, even those who persecute and harm you – as Jesus
has directed us through St. Faustina, “Be merciful as I am merciful (to you)!”
All in all – let us not live in fear for Our God Reigns! His Kingdom is at hand and He is fully in Control He wants us to share in establishing this Kingdom of Mercy here and now! ---- Fr. Don

Parents should be wary of online solicitation
A study on online victimization found that
approximately one in five children receive sexual
solicitation from a stranger over the internet. Given
today’s reliance on online contact, imagine how much
that number has grown over the last several years.
Children who use the internet cannot be totally safe
from dangers, because the internet is open to all, but
parents should monitor activity and sites visited to
ensure that their kids aren’t being contacted by
predators. Talk to your child about internet safety and
appropriate vs. inappropriate communication. For a

NFP AWARENESS WEEK.
Who can use NFP? Any married couple can use NFP! A
woman need not have “regular” cycles. NFP education helps
couples to fully understand their combined fertility, thereby
helping them to either achieve or avoid a pregnancy. The key
to the successful use of NFP is cooperation and
communication between husband and wife—a shared
commitment. NFP is unique among methods of family
planning because it enables its users to work with the body
rather than against it. Fertility is viewed as a reality to live,
not a problem to be solved. (What is NFP? NFP Program, U.S.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
July 24, 2016
Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
World Youth Day in Krakow: “Blessed are the merciful, for
they will be shown mercy” This week, the universal Church
focuses in prayerful solidarity on World Youth Day in
Krakow, where WYD’s founder, Saint John Paul II, served as
archbishop. Its theme coincides with that of Pope Francis’
Jubilee Year of Mercy: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will
be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7). Today’s Gospel echoes the
same theme, as Jesus unites prayer with mercy in “The
parable of the persistent friend.” Jesus teaches us not only
what words to pray, but what deeds must match authentic
prayer. How beautifully down-to-earth is Jesus’ portrait of a
God who can be trusted to do what is best for us. A pesky
neighbor disturbs a sleeping friend and disrupts the
household. Yet beautiful images unfold. Persevering prayer
receives active, practical mercy in loaves of bread, recalling
Luke’s unique expression for the Eucharist, “the breaking of
bread” (Luke 24:35; Acts 2:42). WYD, the Jubilee, and Jesus
thus unite to define perfect prayer as persevering communion
with God and unconditional mercy toward our neighbor.

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
