Tengo dos camisas largas. Son “kurtas”. it is also an auxiliary verb, which means that it helps to build other tenses. However this is not the main verb used in this function, i.e. usually it is used to convey the meaning of ownership, and it does not always help to build other tenses. The equivalent of tener, to have in English and avoir in French, do help to build tenses in English and French. In Spanish it is Haber which is used. We are metnionning this heare in order to avoid such logical confusions. You have encountered this verb in its present tense form 3rd person singular “ hay” in the sentence “Hay muchos edificios y muchos árboles”. However , as we will see later on tener is an auxiliary verb which helps for example to build personal obligation or helps to express a need. CHARACTERISTICS As you can notice tener inserts a G at the first person singular. Tener: has another characteristic: it is a diphtonging verb where the e of the infinitive turns into the diphtongue ie everywhere except at first and second persons plural. When the vowel E of the stem becomes IE, the verb is said to be a diphtonging verb. Some verbs convey that an action is done to an inanimated object: those are the verbs followed by a complement. The structure of the sentence is: Subject + verb + complement El ama de casa limpia los cristales. Hace la comida. 2. Some verbs convey that the subject does an action to himself/herself: those are reflexive verbs. Me lavo, me peino, me levanto 3. If an action is performed on somebody or if somebody benefits from an action, then the complement is preceeded by the sign of the dative case in Spanish, that’s to say the preposition a. La mamá prepara al niño.. Examples of personal verbs built with an indirect - or dative- complement: “A ALGUIEN”. Alentar a alguien: to encourage someone A él, ellos le alientan bastante Amar a alguien: to love someone at a very high almost spiritual level > te ama Animar a alguien: to encourage/cheer someone > me animas mucho Ayudar a alguien: to help someone (ellos) nos ayudan Dar al alguien: to give someone something (tú) me das el libro Decir(le) a alguien: to tell someone > le digo de venir Echar en falta a alguien: to miss someone > te echo en falta Esperar a alguien: to wait for someone > ( yo) espero a Juan, le espero Hablar(le) a alguien: to talk to someone> (tú) le hablas Hacer(le) daño a alguien: to hurt someone > (el) me hace daño Hacer(le) gracia a alguien: to make someone laugh > te hago gracia Invitar a alguien: to invite someone > (él) te invita a cenar Llamar a alguien: to call someone > llamamos a Omar, le llamamos Prestar(le) a alguien: to lend someone something (ella) me presta su bici Querer a alguien : to love someone > (yo) te quiero All the verbs expressing something is done to someone Acostar a alguien: to put someone in bed > la mamá acuesta al niño Lavar a alguien: to wash someone > la muchacha lava a la anciana Levantar a alguien: to lift someone > la enfermera levanta al paciente Vestir a alguien: to dress someone > la mamá viste al bebé Etc… 40 Spanish Here and Now, Complete course A1-A2 Eva GUERDA RODRIGUEZ Unit 3 Spanish Here and Now, Course by Eva GUERDA RODRIGUEZ , 2010-2011 Pondicherry University, India Careful! The verb pensar does not belong to this list: pensar en alguien: > piensa en mí II) Understanding the system of cases and declensions Most languages, such as Tamil, Hindi, Bengali and most of the sanscritic languages in fact function with declensions and cases. The case of the subject is called nominative, the case of the object or direct complement, is the accusative, the case indicating possession, is the genitive, the case indicating an indirect complement the dative, the case indicating a location, the locative ect…. This system is rather archaic and throughout their evolution most “modern” languages like French, Spanish or English have dropped this system and replaced the cases with prepositions. Even though there are no longer any declensions in Spanish, some Spanish verbs are built with what is in Tamil a dative construction. The verb is conjugated at the third person and the pronoun is at the dative case. In Tamil, these verbs are called impersonal verbs. Here are some impersonal verbs of Tamil: please observe their structure so that you can understand the construction in Spanish. pidikum, kideikum, pothum, theriyum, puriyum, vendum. Their structure ends by UM which is the third person. These verbs are in-personal which means that their subject is not a person even though it refers to a person. This is why the person to whom it refers is not at the nominative case, -which is the case of the subject- but at the dative case: naan > yenakki pidikum, nangal > ongalekki pothum etc… 1) Some examples of declension or case systems in the Tamil language : Nominative: naan padukiren Accusative: enei paroungal Dative: enekki pidikum Genitive: yen tambi, yen pustagam 2) Declination of pronouns in Tamil nominative accusative dative genitive 2 possessive adjectives naan ennei yenakki yen nii onnei onakki on avan avanei avanukki avan aval avalei avalukki athe athei atharkki aval Etc…. nangal yengalei engalukki ningal ongalei ongalukki avargal avargalei avargalukki avei avarei avarukki 41 Spanish Here and Now, Complete course A1-A2 Eva GUERDA RODRIGUEZ Unit 3 Spanish Here and Now, Course by Eva GUERDA RODRIGUEZ , 2010-2011 Pondicherry University, India 3) Remaining cases in modern languages : the pronouns The only cases of declensions remaining in modernized European languages – the languages where there no longer are any declensions – are the pronouns. Here are the declensions of the English pronouns. Nominative I You He she it We they Accusative Me You Him/her/ it Us them Genitive Mine Yours His/hers/its Our their Dative (to) me (to) you (to)him/ her (to) us (to) them NB: as you can see, in English the accusative case is exactly the same as the dative case. In Spanish, to avoid confusions there would be a stress indicating the function of the pronoun. Please check in the Spanish board: mí (dative) and mi (genitive), tú (nominative) and tu (genitive). In English, to express tastes, we use a personal verb: I like, he likes. It is the subject who actually likes and the verb conjugated according to the subject. In Spanish just like in Tamil, the verb remains at the third person but the pronoun is declined at the dative case. 4) Declension of Pronouns in Spanish : nominative accusative (complement) dative genitive/possessive pronoun yo tú él ella nosotros vosotros ellos ellas me (mirar) te (mirar) le (mirar) la (mirar) nos (mirar) os (mirar) les (mirar) las (mirar) a mí, me a ti, te a él, le a ella, le a nosotros, nos a vosotros, os a ellos, les a ellas, les mi (libro)/ mi (casa)/ mis (cosas tu (libro)/ tu (casa)/tus (cosas) su (libro)/ su (casa)/ sus (cosas) su (libro) /su (casa)/ sus (cosas) nuestro(s) (libro(s))/vuestra(s) casa(s)) vuestro(s)) (libro(s))/vuestra(s) casa(s)) su (libro(s))/ su(s) casa(s)) su (libro(s))/ su(s) casa(s)) NB: It is important not to get confused with the reflexive pronoun of the reflexive verbs we have mentioned earlier and which appear below as a reminder: me miro te miras se mira nos miramos os miráis se miran 42 I look at myself you look at yourself he/she looks at himself/herself we look at ourselves you (plural) look at yourselves they look at themselves me lavo te lavas se lava nos lavamos os laváis se lavan I wash myself You wash yourself He/she washes himself/herself we wash ourselves you wash yourselves they wash themselves Spanish Here and Now, Complete course A1-A2 Eva GUERDA RODRIGUEZ Unit 3 Spanish Here and Now, Course by Eva GUERDA RODRIGUEZ , 2010-2011 Pondicherry University, India Ejercicio: ¿complementos o verbos reflexivos? seguir el modelo sentence subject complem ent Les ayudamos bastante Nos dan regalos -MOS > 2PP nosotros -AN >3PP ellos Les >3PP NOS> 1PP 3. ¡Venid! ¿Qué os apetece chicas? ¡Os invito yo! mirad: llamar a alguien: invitar a alguien: parecer: la playa: el mar: dar miedo: jugar: nadar con: la ola 47 2nd PS imp vb mirar, look to call someone to invite someone IV: to seem the beach the sea IV: to scare to play to swim with the wave la costa: la urbanización: quedar: la lástima: lo mismo: necesitar: el dinero: por un lado por otro lado el turismo: los ingresos: the coast the urbanization IV: to be left, to remain pity the same to need the money on the one hand on the other hand tourism the income Spanish Here and Now, Complete course A1-A2 Eva GUERDA RODRIGUEZ Unit 3 Spanish Here and Now, Course by Eva GUERDA RODRIGUEZ , 2010-2011 Pondicherry University, India la alegría alegre: poder: mona/o monísima auténtica/o: significar: un pueblo: un pueblito: el pescador: el/la turista la razón: tener razón así: the joy adj joyful diph: o>ue can cute superlative of sup. authentic to mean a village a small village the fisherman the tourist the reason to be right like this, thus quejarse: vale el agua* al = a + el la actividad el deporte el buceo pasearse: correr: antes de ¡venid! apetecer: entrar to complain fine, ok the water to the the activity the sport diving refl. Por eso vuelvo y me voy, vuelo y no vuelo pero canto: soy el pájaro furioso de la tempestad tranquila. 57 Pablo Neruda Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto, Poeta y diplomático Chileno.
