A MESSAGE FROM MONSIGNOR MARC TRUDEAU
P
eople of faith might find the phrase “the new evangelization” confusing. This
term was used often by Pope John Paul II and has been taken up by Benedict
XVI, bishops’ conferences and pastoral theologians. One might ask what happened to the “old” evangelization and what is new about the “new” one. The term
“new evangelization” is not to be understood as a matter of the age or time of
when the evangelization occurred. Rather, the “new” evangelization can be described in terms of a renewed evangelization or
of experiencing the Gospel in a new way. As such,
the New Evangelization is all about a renewal of
our relationship with Jesus Christ.
O
ur Church has always referred to Mary, the
Mother of Jesus as the preeminent instrument
of evangelization. As bearer of the Word Made
Flesh, Mary has the role of presenting her son to
the world. In the New World, after the Spaniards’
conquest of what is now Mexico, the image of Our
Lady of Guadalupe has been described as the single
most important factor in leading the indigenous
people to the Lord. The symbolism of the image,
both Christian and indigenous, give the message to
a vanquished people that they were precious in
God’s eyes and welcome at His table. Thus, Mary
was part of the first evangelization of the New
World.

oth John Paul II and Benedict XVI have heralded Our Lady of Guadalupe as the instrument of the New Evangelization, as well. Mary
continues to appeal to the people of our age, revealing God’s love for us and inviting us into a renewed and deeper relationship with her son. Our
Lady of Guadalupe is the image of Advent, the embodiment of our hope-filled expectation of our Redeemer and of the challenge to enter into communion with the Lord.

as personas de fe podrían encontrar la frase “la nueva evangelización” confusa. Este
término a menudo fue usado por el papa Juan Pablo II y ha sido adoptado por Benedicto XVI, las conferencias episcopales y los teólogos pastorales. Uno podría preguntarse qué pasó con la “antigua” evangelización y que es lo nuevo de la “nueva”. El término
“nueva evangelización” no debe ser entendida como una cuestión de edad o tiempo de cuando la
evangelización ocurrió. Por el contrario, la “nueva evangelización” puede ser descrita en términos
de una renovada evangelización o de vivir el evangelio de una nueva manera. Como tal, la Nueva
Evangelización es todo lo relacionado a renovar nuestra relación con Jesucristo.
N
uestra iglesia siempre se ha referido
a María, la Madre de Jesús como el
instrumento por excelencia de la evangelización.
Como portadora de la Palabra hecha carne, María tiene la función de presentar a su hijo al mundo. En el Nuevo Mundo, después de la conquista
española lo que hoy es México, la imagen de
Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe ha sido descrita
como el factor más importante en la conducción
de los pueblos indígenas hacia el Señor. Los
símbolos de la imagen, cristianos e indígenas,
dan el mensaje a un pueblo vencido que era precioso a los ojos de Dios y bienvenido a su mesa.
Así, María formo parte de la primera evangelización del Nuevo Mundo.
A
mbos Juan Pablo II y Benedicto XVI también han proclamado a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe como
el instrumento de la Nueva Evangelización.
María continúa atrayendo a las personas de
nuestra era, rebelándonos el amor de Dios e invitándonos a renovar y profundizar la relación
con su hijo. Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe es la
imagen de Adviento, la encarnación de esperanza llena de expectativa de nuestro Redentor y del
reto de entrar en comunión con el Señor.

“Rejoice: the Lord is nigh.” As Christmas draws near, the Church emphasizes
the joy which should be in our hearts over all that the birth of our Savior means
for us. The great joy of Christians is to see the day drawing near when the Lord
will come again in His glory to lead them into His kingdom.
Gaudete Sunday refers to the first word of the Entrance Antiphon, “Rejoice”. As
we light the rose candle, light your inner candle with the prayer, “Rejoice”.

NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE

Muchos de nosotros nos preparamos casi todo el
año para esta temporada, no solamente por el nacimiento del Jesús, sino por otra gran fiesta, que
es la de la Virgen de Guadalupe, casi en todas las
iglesias y en todo el mundo sobre todo y principalmente en las iglesias latinoamericanas esta es
una gran celebración.
Este miércoles pasado celebramos una vez más la
gran fiesta dedicada a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.
La celebración de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe,
en el contexto del Adviento, también adquiere singular importancia, ya que papel de madre e intercesora se ha manifestado no sólo en el momento
de la encarnación de Cristo, sino en momentos
claves de la historia de cada pueblo.
La Devoción a María Madre de Dios
El origen de esta advocación es de todos conocido. Se remonta a los oscuros años de la colonia.
Los españoles trajeron a América, juntamente con
su hambre de oro y aventura, la fe cristiana y el
amor de enamorados que tenían a la Madre de
Dios. La devoción de María se adueño fácilmente
del corazón de los indios. Quizá vieron en la dulzura y bondad de la Virgen nazarena un consuelo
y una esperanza en medio de los atropellos que
padecían de parte de los conquistadores.
Las apariciones fueron nacidas del dolor de pueblos oprimidos que buscaban la libertad y esperanza. Más importante que el origen es el hecho
que, desde entonces la devoción a Nuestra Señora
de Guadalupe quedó firmemente unida a la historia de México. María ha estado presente tanto en
los momentos de triunfo y alegría como en las
horas de dolor, en las calamidades de la naturaleza o de la política, en las luchas y en las persecuciones.
La Devoción a la Virgen de Guadalupe.
Pero, la Virgen de Guadalupe no es solamente un
símbolo de mexicanidad; ella está unida al alma
de toda Latinoamérica. A las iglesias donde se
venera la Virgen de Guadalupe acudimos por millares atraídos por su corazón maternal. Para no-
sotros, María es doblemente nuestra Madre: Madre
espiritual por ser ella la Madre de la iglesia y por
habernos dado a Jesucristo, y Madre, en segundo
lugar, por haber inspirado y protegido el nacimiento de nuestros pueblos. En realidad a los pueblos
latinos nos unen muchas cosas: la tierra, el pasado,
la lengua, la fe cristiana y, de una manera especial,
la devoción a María. La virgen María es nuestra, es
parte de nuestra historia e identidad. Ella es, naturalmente, la Madre de la iglesia, sin fronteras ni
nacionalidades.
El miércoles pasado, volvimos a robustecer los
lazos de fe que nos unen a la Madre de Dios. Ella
ha edificado su casa en nuestra tierra, vive en
nuestros pueblos, sus santuarios y ermitas se levantan junto al mar como faros de luz o cuelgan en
las montañas como nidos de protección. Pero las
torres de esos santuarios y ermitas apuntan hacia el
cielo como símbolo del papel que desempeña María en nuestra vida: llevarnos a Cristo, Camino,
Verdad y Vida.
Reflexión
A nosotros, individualmente y como pueblos, nos corresponde vivir todo lo que
María simboliza en nuestra fe cristiana:
obediencia y fidelidad al destino que Dios
ha trazado para nosotros, colaboración en
la empresa de redención de nuestros pueblos que necesitan ser rescatados de la pobreza y de la injusticia, constancia en las
horas de dolor cuando hay que estar de pie
junto a la cruz, fe que es compromiso y entrega a Jesucristo. Nuestra Señora de
Guadalupe será siempre un símbolo de esperanza para Latinoamérica. Démosle gracias a Dios por habernos dado a María, la
llena de Gracia y la bendita entre las mujeres. Si tenemos a María tendremos siempre
a Jesús.

de emergencia de hospitales por lesiones
relacionadas con juguetes. Aquí hay algunos ejemplos
generales a tener en cuenta al comprar juguetes:
Juguetes de tela deben ser etiquetados como resistentes al fuego o ignifugo. Los juguetes de peluche

SMM School would like to say a big
to the Holy Name Society for their very generous donation of
$688.39 for our St. Joseph Fund which helps those school families
who are experiencing temporary financial difficulties.
The funds for this donation were raised at the Holy Name pasta dinner.

Tips for Choosing Safe Toys for Kids
Millions of toys are out there, and hundreds of new ones hit the
stores each year. Toys are supposed to be fun and are an important
part of any child's development. But each year, scores of kids are
treated in hospital emergency departments for toy-related injuries.
Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind when toyshopping: Toys made of fabric should be labeled as flame resistant
or flame retardant. Stuffed toys should be washable. Painted toys
should be covered with lead-free paint. Art materials should say
nontoxic. Crayons and paints should say ASTM D-4236 on the
package, which means that they've been evaluated by the American
Society for Testing and Materials. For more information, please
