Sign up for our Yahoo Group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PattersonPark President’s Message Half way through the year of my second term as PPNA president seems like the perfect time to reflect on all that we have accomplished, whole heartedly thanking my leadership team and let everyone in on why we get involved and the potential personal benefits of doing so. PPNA has grown immensely as an organization and we have accomplished great things and will continue to do so with the help of you all. Who is your neighborhood leadership and why do we get involved? There is the president, dedicated sector vice presidents, secretary and treasurer comprising your executive board. We work with the committee chairs/members in coordinating activities throughout the year. In speaking among our group about the benefits of being involved at this level, the overwhelming theme is one of passion for knowing their neighbors and helping bridge the gaps between residents and city agencies. The overwhelming majority feel that there is significant personal benefit from knowing your neighbors that enhances their quality of life and allows them to feel connected to the community as a whole. We have all been able to establish relationships with our elected officials and city agencies ensuring our opinions on issues are heard and taken into consideration in the decisions making processes. We pride ourselves in being partners with the city in finding solutions to the issues we are faced with. New board members cite being impressed by how much more effectively city or state agencies can respond to issues when the organization serves as conduit between the citizens and the various agencies/departments that provide services to our community. I can say personally my experiences as president has elevated my level of expectation for my elected officials. While I always voted I now truly understand the need to make informed decisions when you head to the polls for each and every election, and that these people are here to serve us all. We all have learned not only who to approach with issues but the best manner in which to approach them to will get things accomplished. While sometimes the work isn‘t always easy, its very gratifying to know we are able to impact the community in a positive manner. There is much more all of us have gained in our leadership roles - if you would like to know more, I encourage you to approach any of us to learn more about our personal experiences and if any of the roles on the board may be right for you. This year will be my last term as president, so I encourage all of you to consider this or any other leadership role within the organization so we can continue to grow and move forward as a community. New ideas and energy in the process is vital to making sure we continue moving forward. If you don‘t think a role on the board is for you, there are many smaller roles available that are just as important to our collective efforts. Just find something you are interested in and passionate about so it isn‘t a chore at the end of the day! The summer months are busy for many, so we will take July and August off from our general meetings but there are still activities going on, including clean ups, sign installation and preparation for our fall home tour. We will be back and ready to roll in September to finish out the year and celebrate the organizations 25th year of existence with a party at the Creative Alliance in November (more details to come). I sincerely thank everyone for your work in the community on all levels and as my presidential term will come to a close this year I look forward to continuing to work with everyone as a neighbor always. I am proud to tell people I live in Patterson Park, and that they don‘t know what they are missing if they haven‘t been up here to check us out! Hello from the Friends of Patterson Park! We hope everybody‘s been getting their fill of the beautiful weather – perfect for spending quality time in the park. The Friends of Patterson Park have been hard at work getting ready for our fabulous free PNC Concerts in the Park. We hope to see lots of neighbors out for our first concert on June 12th, when Big Daddy Stallings will perform. Bring a blanket and a picnic and enjoy the breezes on Pagoda Hill! If you‘re looking for a more active way to enjoy the park, check out our Walking Group, which meets at the Pagoda on Mondays and Wednesday evenings from 6-7 p.m. We‘re continuing free yoga on Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. near the pagoda, and we have many more opportunities to enjoy the beauty of the park on our website at www.pattersonpark.com. We always welcome volunteers, and the pagoda will be open Sundays this summer for some of the best views in town. For more information on any of our programs, call 410-276-3676. See you in the Park! Jennifer Arndt Robinson President Friends of Patterson Park Board of Directors Goodbye to Bill, Katie & Decklin Thank you for your contribution to the neighborhood and congratulations on your new opportunity in New Orleans. You will be greatly missed. All of us at the PPNA wish your family much success and prosperity! 11 Please PARK NICE in our Neighborhood Huíchol Indians in our neighborhood! Notes from Jim Kraft, City Councilman Thank you to PPNA and everyone who has shown their support for the Southeast Schools Baseball League. I started this league so kids from City schools throughout Southeast Baltimore (including our own Patterson Park Public Charter School) would have the opportunity to play baseball in an organized setting, to meet kids from different schools and to have positive interactions with their communities. We had a great turnout for the Opening Day Ceremony on May 12, complete with the singing of the National Anthem by Pastor Mark Parker from Breath of God Lutheran Church. Games will continue every Wednesday and Thursday at fields in Patterson Park, from 4 to 6pm, weather permitting. Come out to support the teams! Are you interested in using the Patterson Park Pool during extended hours this summer? I am working with Recreation and Parks and community stakeholders to create a program that would allow people interested in swimming during extended hours on evenings and weekends to do so by paying a membership fee to cover operational costs for the extra hours. This way, we could maintain the accessibility of the pool to all throughout the day, while creating more options for those who are interested. The establishment of this arrangement is based in part on whether there is enough community interest, so please email my office to let me know if you would be interested in a membership option. As always, you can reach me at 410-396-4821 or [email protected]. Thank you very much for the opportunity to serve you. Since 2002, the Creative Alliance has hosted an annual visit by Francisco Loza, now a CA Resident Artist and Songs on the Wind Coordinator. Loza‘s work incorporates Huíchol aesthetics and traditions into his own work and has served as an unofficial ambassador for their culture. By Kim Schaefer, PPNA resident Our neighborhood is one of the few in Baltimore that continues to grow in spite of the current economy. It is a popular place bringing in more people – some of who some who are trying city living for the first time. This is great, but brings in more vehicles, households that have more than one car, and more parking needs from greater activity in the Park. As we have all found out, parking in the city is not the same as parking where you have a driveway and garage. So we need to learn to share this valuable resource on each of our blocks to ease some of the parking pressure we are currently experiencing. Songs on the Wind is a provocative series of exhibitions, workshops, performances, a screening, demonstrations and discussions to consider the wisdom that ancient cultures have to offer in contemporary society. Four Huíchol craftspeople and shaman share the magical world of the Wixarika (Huichol) People represented by ancient symbolism of their lifestyle and customs. The month long residency program funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts continues the Creative Alliance tradition of celebrating traditional art and artisans. Designed to spark conversations, First Nation Gathering will bring Baltimore‘s burgeoning Mexican population, Native Americans, CA‘s general audience and the Huícholes together. The market place will offer vibrate colorful beaded sculptures and jewelry (chaquíra), embroidered clothing (bordado) and yarn paintings (arte en estambre) for sale by the visiting delegation of artisans. While the angle parking strategy is helping - we get about 18 more spaces per block on the streets that have it, we continue to lose spaces due to sloppy and careless parking! Many people take up 2 or more spaces in parallel parking. We can all do a better job of parking in our neighborhood to max out our parking spaces before resorting to permit parking (a hassle and incurs more parking tickets) and more angle parking (long and expensive process). Parking NICE means: The Huíchol (or Wixárika) people are from the remote mountains of western central Mexico celebrated for their vibrant artwork – yarn paintings, beaded sculptures and embroidery depicting animal spirits and religious visions. So please be a good neighbor and learn to PARK NICE, making life easier for all and keeping our neighborhood a great place to live, work and play. INGREDIENTS: 1 15 oz container part-skim ricotta 9 oz part-skim mozzarella grated (2 cups) 2 cups baby spinach, roughly chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1 26-oz jar marina sauce In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta, parmesan, 1 coup of the mozzarella, and 1/4 tsp each salt and pepper; fold in the spinach. In a 5 or 6 qt slow cooker, combine the beef, garlic, oregano, 1/2 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp pepper. Transfer half the meat mixture to a small bowl. Add 1/2 cup of the marinara sauce to the slow cooker and mix into the meat; spread the meat evenly on the bottom of the slow cooker. Top with a layer of the noodles, breaking them to fit as necessary. Spread 13/ of the remaining sauce (3/4 cup) over the noodles and dollop with 1/3 of the ricotta mixture (I cup) and half the remaining meat; repeat. Top with a layer of noodles, the remaining sauce and remaining ricotta mixture. Sprinkle with the remaining mozzarella and cook, covered, on low for 4 hours or on high for 2 hours. Heather Hurley, La Presidente de PPNA www.ilovepattersonpark.com This summer, Patterson Park Public Charter School (PPPCS) is partnering with KaBoom!, a national non-profit that is working to ensure that every child has a great place to play within walking distance. PPPCS is building a playground in the school‘s courtyard and needs your help! There are several ways you can get involved; donating $5, volunteering 5 hours, and sending 5 emails to your friends about the build are just a few examples. Becoming a member of the PPPCS build on the KaBoom! website could help the school win $15,000 towards the build, so check out http://projects.kaboom.org/ projects/3949 to see more ways to get involved today. Summer Curfew Rules With schools out and warm summer nights, we expect children and teens will be out on the streets in the evening. However, Baltimore curfew laws say that children and teenagers under 17 years old can't be out in public after 11 p.m. from Sunday through Thursday and after midnight on Friday and Saturdays, unless they are with their parents or guardians. 4 1/4 cup grated Parmesan (1 oz) Kosher salt & pepper 3/4 lb lean ground beef 1/2 tsp dried oregano 12 dry lasagna noodles 9 Upcoming Events in the Park Meet Aida Pinot-Baquero, a Top Neighborhood Mom! Sunday June 12, 6:30-8:30 pm. PNC Concerts in Patterson Park Presents Big Daddy Stallings. Pagoda Hill. Rain date 6/15. The self-proclaimed ―Mayor of BTown‖, this South Carolina-born truckerturned-music man brings the real essence of the blues to Patterson Park. According to Big City R&B Magazine, ―Some people can wear a fancy hat and talk the talk, but Charles ‗Big Daddy‘ Stallings has the blues to back it up.‖ In May, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake hosted the annual Baltimore‘s Top Neighborhood Moms luncheon honoring those dedicated women who have given selflessly to make Baltimore‘s neighborhoods better, safer, and stronger. This year, the PPNA was proud to nominate Aida Pinto-Baquero. While Aida and her husband, Bill, have only recently moved into the Patterson Park neighborhood, she has proved herself to be a valuable asset to our community. Aida is the Volunteer Coordinator for the organization Hope Springs, and coordinates free HIV testing and follow-up counseling. She is also active with the group Communities For All Ages (CFAA), which concentrates its efforts on trans-forming the greater Highlandtown community by bridging people of all ages and backgrounds. At Patterson Park Public Charter School, Aida facilitates Mis Raices, the school‘s education and support group for Latino immigrant families. And she is also very active with her church, The Gallery Church, and on Sundays teaches preschool-aged children. Both Aida and Bill also make themselves available to police and other public service entities to mediate family disputes. Sometimes they are called on in the middle of the night to go to someone‘s house to mediate, and Aida never hesitates to get out of bed to help someone in need. We are thrilled to have Aida and Bill as our friends and neighbors! Tuesday June 21, 6:30-8:30 pm. PNC Concerts in Patterson Park Presents Wissahickon Chicken Shack. Pagoda Hill. Rain date 6/22.
