Just a Thought...
Fr. Tom Hurley
As you will read in the following pages
of this week’s Crossroads, some
exciting new changes are happening
in the area of Music Ministry at
Old St. Pat’s. Like all of you, I stand
utterly grateful to some wildly talented
people whose skill and dedication have
allowed Old St. Pat’s to carry
one of the finest music ministries in
the Archdiocese.
After a great deal of personal reflection, our beloved Bill
Fraher has decided that perhaps his role in our music
program should change as we keep going forward. Bill
will now be our Director of Concert Choirs and focus a
great deal of his time and energy towards some of our
“signature” events, namely Deck the Halls, Siamsa na
nGnael, our Celtic Celebration, Too Hot to Handel,
and hopefully develop some new musical venues for Old
St. Pat’s and our supporters.
The music for our Sunday experience and our overall
liturgical life will be placed into the wonderful hands of
our new Director of Liturgical Music, Dominic Trumfio
and our Associate Director of Music, Laura Higgins.
I am really excited for this new moment in the life of
Old St. Pat’s. While so much can and will be said of Bill
Fraher’s legacy to Old St. Pat’s, I am profoundly grateful
to him for the absolute solid foundation Bill has created,
allowing us to continue building our liturgies on lifegiving, prayerful music that leads us into the Mysteries
of the Divine. Enough good things cannot be said for
Bill’s creativity and his ability to foster great choirs,
outstanding cantors, and a quality of music that speaks
to the soul.
Bill Fraher loves this place and her people. He has given
more than 20 years of his life to the ongoing ministry
and formation of Old St. Patrick Church. It was because
of Bill’s deep care and concern for our future that, about
a year ago, he invited Dominic Trumfio to be the leader
our Children’s Choir for our Family Masses. Bill knows a
good thing when he sees it. He has a knack for quality
and creativity. Because of Bill’s invitation to Dominic,
such a gift has brought to us another one of the finest
musicians in the archdiocese with Dominic. Having both
Bill and Dominic with us in these new capacities will be
nothing but a blessing.
And of course, we are so “tri-blessed” with the
outstanding gift of Laura Higgins. A familiar face to all
of us for many years, Laura’s gift of music, her stunning
voice, and her knowledge of liturgy, choirs, and Old
St. Pat’s will continue to be the blessing she brings to
all of us. I have embarrassed her many times before
publicly about this, but the transformation of the 5 p.m.
Mass Choir has been nothing short of excellent. I stand
grateful to Laura for her talents, her gracious style, and
all the goodness she brings to Old St. Pat’s. She is a
wonderful gift to this place and our mission.
Please join me in welcoming this abundant blessing to
our musical life. Once again, we have been blessed
and I give thanks to God for continuing to enrich our
experience of faith through the beauty of song.
• Don’t forget about that 8 p.m. Mass we now have
on Sunday nights for the summer!
Enjoy these summer days. See you around!

FXW Day | Wednesday, June 12
We invite you to join us for the Second Annual FXW Day, a school-wide celebration highlighting the impact
that our families have made in our community.
Due to the FXW festivities taking place on Des Plaines, the street will be closed on Wednesday, June 12.
The 12:10 p.m. Mass will be canceled; however, for your convenience, there will be a Mass celebrated at
5:15 p.m. at Old St. Pat’s.
As always, we are interested in your opinion. Please let us know in the future you would like to attend a

A wakenings
Wide Awake at 2 a.m.
by Laura Fields
It used to be unusual to be awake in the wee hours of the morning unless I was
returning home from an evening with friends. But now, in my 50s, this waking-inthe-middle-of-the-night thing has become more common than unusual.
Laura Fields
That said, my normal reaction is to toss and turn fretting over lost sleep or some
project that is yet to be finished. But recently I have come to see these sleepless
hours as opportunities for prayer and awakenings, and I have begun to ponder
the wisdom that comes in the deep quiet of the night.
Often I turn to the Examen to review my day with the Lord at my side. According
to IgnationSprituality.com, “the Daily Examen is a technique of prayerful reflection on the events
of the day in order to detect God’s presence and discern God’s direction for us. [It] is an ancient
practice in the Church that can help us see God’s hand at work in our whole experience.”
The Examen includes five steps:
1. Become aware of God’s presence.
2. Review the day with gratitude.
3. Pay attention to your emotions.
4. Choose one feature of the day and pray from it.
5. Look toward tomorrow.
Inevitably, I am awed by the volume of moments from my day to pray about, and this night was
no different. Among other things there was the spirit-filled conversation with a friend visiting
from Atlanta, a good work meeting about new business, a moment of insight while catching
up on overdue reading, and an inspired conversation about Pope Francis’ recent homily. Even
though the homily was almost two weeks old, I opted to pray about it because the energy around
it was still palpable.
In the homily, Pope Francis had said “The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us, with the Blood of
Christ: all of us, not just Catholics. Everyone!” In my conversation that day with friends we had
talked about that inclusive statement and how important it was to hear it from the Pope. Now,
in my prayer, I remembered how thrilled I had been when I saw the Huffington Post headline on
Facebook (yes on Facebook). I prayed from the deep happiness that had initially welled up when I
read this and the gladness I experienced sharing the story with friends in this little prayer group.
In the Examen I became aware of my deep gratitude for God’s ways of surprising me (sometimes
by the action; sometimes by the messenger) and God’s gentle reminders to me to stay open to
the possibility of change. I even became aware of my delight that God’s message had come
through Facebook.
I do not know what tomorrow will bring or what awakening may happen at 2 a.m., but I do know
that I no longer fear the sleepless nights, and in some ways I kind of look forward to them. But
for now, as the birds start their morning song, I think I will go back to bed and grab a few more
hours of blessed sleep.

The “100 Jobs Challenge” — Source of Justice and Hope
By Vincent L. Guider

100
The Old St. Pat’s “100 Jobs Challenge” is an unbelievable blessing for Chris. Having known and
worked with him and other North Lawndale job seekers, I am aware of their frustration at not being
able to land honest, steady employment no matter how hard and how long they try.
Vincent L. Guider
Chris is one of those polite, intelligent, good-natured young adults, who like so many others in his
community, cannot find a job. He is not in a gang. He has no addictions. He poses no danger to
anyone. He graduated from high school in 2011, and the last thing he wants to do is beg or receive
handouts to survive. However, he and others like him need help from people who have business
connections if they are to have any chance of making a living and advancing in society.
Unfortunately, the odds are stacked against job seekers in Chris’ neighborhood to a far greater degree
than they are for people in other Chicago metro areas. The per capita income in North Lawndale is 66.4% less than the
Chicago average and 66.7% less than the Illinois average. The median household income in North Lawndale is 55.4%
less than the Chicago average and 63.9% less than the Illinois average. In Chris’ neighborhood, poverty is 130.3%
greater than the Chicago average and 430.4% greater than other Illinois communities. (Source: AreaVibes 2013)
100 JOBS CHALLENGE
While we discussed his predicament, I asked Chris if I could share it with the people of Old St. Pat’s. He readily agreed,
excited to be able to tell his story. He really wanted it to be known, but he was quick to insist, “I don’t want to be the object
of anyone’s pity.” He continued, “Yes, keep it real in your article and make sure that your readers understand my story
is not just about me. What I am going through is the same as what a whole bunch of folks around me are experiencing
every single day. A lot of us don’t know how we’re going to make it without help.” His transparency, humility and refusal
to cast blame amazed and stirred me.
“Would they really do that for us?”
Chris was awestruck by the notion of a “100 Jobs Challenge.” After I informed him of how it works and why the people
of Old St. Pat’s are doing it, he paused and looked deep into my eyes as his watered. Then with an uncharacteristically
puzzled expression he inquired, “Would they really do that for us?” I nodded, “Yes.” He shook his head in amazement
and then asked for clarification, so I laid out what is being asked of the congregation. I said, “We are requesting that all
working members of the congregation go to their places of employment and their other networks and make an appeal
to set aside jobs, mostly entry level, for job seekers in North Lawndale. We will then funnel those jobs through the North
Lawndale Employment Network, a non-profit organization that specializes in preparing and placing job seekers who
face difficulties finding work.” Some jobs will also go to the Cara Program. At the end of my explanation, he broke out
into a big smile and quipped, “That is awesome! Those are some good people at Old St. Pat’s. With that kind of help,
maybe some of us can have a chance to make it out here.” My smile agreed with him.

In Chris’ neighborhood, poverty is 130.3% greater
than the Chicago average and 430.4% greater

Chris is so sharp minded that he immediately posed some obvious questions. “What
about Old St. Pat’s people who are under-employed and unemployed?” he asked. I assured
him that the church is definitely also concerned about them and that members of the
congregation will network on their behalf as well. He said, “Good.” Then he inquired,
“Do the people at your church realize many of us are not just jobless because we are
lazy, ignorant or thugs?” I knew he was referring to the complicated socioeconomic and
historical conditions that limit opportunities and resources for people in the neighborhood.
He also is quite cognizant of the fact that businesses and available jobs are few and far
between in the neighborhood. I assured him, “Yes, I believe that most of them do know.”
His next question was equally as significant. He asked, “Do they understand that people
Christopher Lawrence
like me fill out applications, dress as best we can, go to job fairs, put together resumes and
do everything we are told, but despite our best
efforts no jobs seem to materialize?” Again I nodded, “Yes.” He then
punctuated the conversation with a last bit of understated rhetorical
wisdom. He concluded, “PLEASE be sure they know that nowadays
finding a job is not about what you know or what you are willing to do.
Today it is all about WHO you know.” I knew what he meant based
on many previous conversations in which we had engaged. Having
grown up as the child of a single parent in a poor household, Chris had
little or no experience of a father, mother, uncle, aunt, grandparent or
older sibling going to work every day. He has no relatives or family
friends who are able to pick up a phone or send an email to make
connections with internships, or summer jobs. He has no sources
for job hunting clothes, bus fare, cash for food, other necessities or
entertainment to take a break from his frustration. Furthermore, he
grew up in a neighborhood where few adults were around to model
honest, productive work on a regular basis. Chris and the others need
to meet people in business who will help them to turn the corner.
By no fault of their own, Chris and others in North Lawndale are trapped
in cycles of joblessness, poverty and despair. Yet amazingly, and despite
the desperateness of their conditions, Chris and other good people in
North Lawndale hold on to hope that they will find sustainable jobs.
For them, the “100 Job Challenge” can be the catalyst that not only
changes the course of their lives, but also impacts generations to come
in their families. What an amazing act of discipleship and justice by the
people of Old St. Pat’s! What a noble challenge!

Music Ministry —Transition
For more than 20 years, Old St, Pat’s has been blessed with the prodigious talents of Bill Fraher
as Music Director. Under Bill’s direction and dedication, the Old St. Pat’s community has been
the recipient of outstanding music throughout the years. Our Sunday Liturgies have been
enhanced with the beautiful sounds of our Liturgical Choirs that have been created and guided
so gracefully by Bill. The themes and story lines of our Concert Choirs such as Deck The Hall
and Siamsa na nGael as conceived by Bill have thrilled thousands of music lovers every year.
Many, many wedding ceremonies have benefited from Bill’s creativity and personal touch.
Originally, Bill single-handedly created the music programs for Old St. Pat’s; however, he also
developed an outstanding Music Ministry staff that continues to produce and perform such
spectacular music for our liturgies and concerts. Just recently, Bill has taken the time to reflect
on his commitments to Old St. Pat’s while contemplating future personal goals. After much
soul searching and many discussions with Bill, we make the following staff announcements for
Music Ministry. You may be assured that the quality of our liturgical music programming will
continue to soar to new heights. We are additionally blessed by the wonderful gift of Laura
Higgins as she continues her commitment to the Old St. Pat’s community as Associate Director
of Worship Music.
BILL FRAHER, DIRECTOR OF CONCERT CHOIRS
Bill will continue to be involved with Old St. Pat’s as
Director of Concert Choirs such as Deck The Hall, Siamsa
na nGael, and the Too Hot Choir in addition to weddings
and funerals. Bill will conduct the Sunday Liturgical
Choirs for the last time on Sunday, July 14, 2013.

DOMINIC TRUMFIO, DIRECTOR OF WORSHIP MUSIC
On Monday, June 3, 2013, Dominic became the
Director of Worship Music with primary responsibility
for our Sunday Liturgy Choirs. For the past 18 months,
Dominic has been involved at Old St. Pat as Director of
Youth Music focusing on the Children’s Choir and Teen
Choir program, for which he will continue to oversee.
Upon receiving this news, Dominic said “please know
this is a title I do not take lightly and I look forward to
carrying on the tradition of musical excellence that Bill
has established for the past 20+ years. It is a humbling
and daunting task to follow one of the best Directors of
Music that I know. It has been a great pleasure to work
closely with Bill during the past year and a half, which
will undoubtedly make this transition a seamless one.
I look forward to my continued relationship with Bill
as we work, in tandem, to lead the musical life of this
great community. I also look forward to my continued
work with Laura Higgins, as we both lead and guide
you and help make the “tent grow wider”. As Bill put
it so eloquently.”
Dominic comes from a varied musical background
having served as a full-time Director of Music of a
large north suburban parish
for 15 years (St. Raymond,
Mt. Prospect); played for the
national tour of Les Miserables
for three years; served on the
committee that put together
the new Gather - Third Edition
hymnal...played many shows
for Broadway in Chicago and other local theaters
(currently playing Oliver! at Drury Lane)...given
workshops for the National Association of Pastoral
Musicians (NPM)...played solo flute and pennywhistles
for a couple Siamsa na nGael celebrations...music
coordinator and director for the Bernardin Center
at Catholic Theological Union (CTU)...recorded and
performed with many liturgical music composers,
including friends of Old St. Pat’s: Liam Lawton and
Rory Cooney...just to name a handful of the threads
that make up the fabric of my music career. I am so
deeply honored to have been asked to add Director
of Worship Music of Old St. Patrick’s Church to this
tapestry. Know that ALL of you are an important part
of this great work in progress!
LAURA HIGGINS, Associate Director of Worship Music
We are delighted that Laura will now have the
opportunity to increase her presence at Old St.
Pat’s as she becomes more involved again with our
worship music on a weekly basis. Laura will continue
conducting the 5 p.m. Choir and celebrate the Liturgy
with that congregation. You also will see her smiling
face at the 11:15 a.m. Masses every week In the
future as well as downstairs in the Church Hall when
we overflow the pews in the church.
Laura said “I am so lucky to be part of this Music
Ministry Team. Some members had expressed their
fears that the music on Sunday would ‘change.’ I
understand people fearing change. I am one of
them, too. But several years ago, I was given the
mission to create a choir at the 5 p.m. Liturgy. Up
until then, It was just me and a pianist, sometimes a
flute or another singer. I had started singing at the 5
p.m. Mass the week after Bill Fraher started working
at Old St Patrick’s — so I felt very comfortable
continuing as the only cantor and did not think I
could convince enough other singers to join in our
songprayer to make a choir. I was afraid of change.
But, thanks to Bill Fraher and Fr. Tom Hurley pushing
9
me past my comfortable limits,
we now have at the 5 pm Liturgy,
an amazingly talented group of
singers and instrumentalists that
I am privileged to direct.
Among Bill’s many talents
includes a fine hand in selecting
music to enhance our songprayer.
I have always been amazed at his ability to find
music that not only reiterates the gospel message,
but expands upon it and Is beautiful and stirring as
well. Dominic Trumfio, I am happy to Inform you, has
this same talent. I am so looking forward to singing
and working with both these talented gentlemen.
Bill Fraher has a unique view in creating the seasonal
choirs that are a hallmark of Old St. Patrick’s Music
Ministy. He has found (and in some cases commissioned)
some amazing gems that we have sung at Deck The
Hall and Siamsa concerts through the years I am so
glad he will be continuing in this ministry of bringing
beautiful music not only to us, at Old St Pat’s, but to
the people of the city of Chicago.“

28th Annual Chicago Hunger Walk

Soldier Field, 1400 South Museum Campus Drive, Chicago
Do You Know… more than 807,600 men, women and children in Cook County are food
insecure …meaning they are not sure where their next meal will come from…that is one in
six persons. That is a staggering 78% increase over five years ago.
You are invited to join in stamping out hunger in Cook County by participating in the 28th
annual Chicago Hunger Walk on Saturday, June 29. The route is 3.2 miles (5K) along
beautiful Lake Michigan and historic Soldier Field…rain or shine!
You may choose to WALK... WORK as a volunteer…become a DONOR…or any combination. Bring your
families and your friends. Even if you have never worked at the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD)
with Connections, or with Old St. Pat’s Outreach, you are welcome to join our joint Old S. Pat’s contingency
of walkers, workers and donors.
In 2012, almost 12,000 walkers (22% increase over 2011) participated in the WALK and helped to raise
$566,000. Each year, participation continues to grow, but the need to provide food for families is increasing
at a quicker pace. Beneficiaries of the HUNGER WALK are the 650 GCFD food pantries, shelters, and soup
kitchens in Cook County that will receive 100% of the proceeds from this event. Underwriters assume all
operating costs. Funds gathered directly help participating agencies provide nutritious food to 807,000
people in need in Cook County, an increase of 78% since 2008. You may obtain pledges or walk/work in the
name of an agency and/or be a donor yourself. Most agencies are run entirely by volunteers and have to
raise their own operating funds in addition to food assistance they receive through the GCFD. Three of these
agencies are supported by Old St. Pat’s Outreach.

Location: Soldier Field, 1400 S. Museum Campus Drive, Chicago
Registration Fee: No required registration fee as all income will come from donations —

Mother’s Day. Team FXW, the largest team in the Chicago
race, made a huge impact that day, raising more than $8,000
to support breast cancer research and awareness. It was
an inspiring effort and a powerful tribute to FXW founder,
Maggie Daley, to whom the race was dedicated this year.
1.
Team Captain and FXW parent, Lisa Shydlowski, worked
tirelessly to honor Mrs. Daley through the school’s
participation. “I think Mrs. Daley would have been proud
of us. As I looked at the crowd on race day, I thought about
how this must have been what she envisioned: a group
of parents and their children, from a variety of cultures,
economic backgrounds and religions, joined together to do
some good in this amazing city. It was a Mother’s Day I’ll
never forget.”
2.
Despite the blustery cold weather, FXW 5th grader, Elijah
Davis, was thrilled to be a part of the Komen Walk for the
Cure. “I liked that we raised a lot of money to help people
with breast cancer get healthy again.” Second grader, Maura
Higgins agreed. “I like knowing that my school and friends
worked together to help people who have cancer. It makes
me feel so happy that we can help people.”
The Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure provided FXW
students and families with a wonderful opportunity to work
together to make a difference in Chicago. At FXW, the lesson
of service is one that all students both learn and experience.
3.
1.FXW 5th graders, Sophia Kouri, Kendall Pollard, Taylor
O’Donnell and Bella Shydlowski cross the finish line.
2.Team FXW Captain, Lisa Shydlowski and Susan G. Komen
Foundation CEO, Rita Fordham, display the Team Awards.
3.FXW Head of School, Mary Reiling, leads Team FXW in a
prayer for those who have lost loved ones to, or are battling,
breast cancer.

Prayerful Movement: Yoga as Prayer Practice
With Ali Niederkorn & Dina Wolf
Can I exercise and pray simultaneously?
How can yoga help me embody prayer?
What does our faith say about cultivating a healthy relationship with our bodies?
This workshop will offer a blend of yoga practice, inspiration from scripture,
prayerful meditation and small group reflection. Learn how you might add a
customized faith component to the mind, body, spirit connection. Participants
will receive take-home practices and additional resources.
All levels welcome! Bring a yoga mat if you have one.
Dress comfortably for movement
Ali and Dina are both practicing Catholics and
certified yoga instructors. They co-founded
Prayer Yoga in 2009. Prayer Yoga is an
experience of explicitly integrating prayers and
themes of our faith with yoga practice. Drawing
from multiple faith traditions, yoga has evolved
across the ages as a means of tuning the body
in order to better commune with God through prayer and meditation.

Rev. Andrew Greeley (1928 - 2013)
Rev. Greeley grew up in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood
and attended St. Angela School and Archbishop Quigley
Preparatory Seminary. He studied for the priesthood
at St. Mary of the Lake seminary in Mundelein and was
ordained in May 1954. He earned a doctorate in 1962
from the University of Chicago. While studying for his
doctorate, he was attached to Christ the King parish in
Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood.
In a statement released by his family, and the Durkin
Family, who are long time members of Old St. Pat’s,
they said “our lives have been tremendously enriched by
having the presence of Fr. Andrew Greeley in our family.
First and foremost as a loving uncle who was always there
for us with unfailing support or with a gentle nudge, who
shared with us both the little things and the big moments
of family life. But we were specially graced that this man
was also an amazing priest who recently celebrated the
59th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. He
served the Church all those years with a prophetic voice
and with unfailing dedication, and the Church he and our
parents taught us to love is a better place because of him.
Our hearts are heavy with grief, but we find hope in the
promise of Heaven that our uncle spent his life proclaiming
to us, his friends, his parishioners and his many fans. He
resides now with the Lord of the Dance, and that dance
will go on.”

St. Barnabas
Barnabas, a Jew
of Cyprus, comes
as close as anyone
outside the Twelve
to being a fullfledged apostle.
He was closely
associated with St.
Paul (he introduced
Paul to Peter and the other apostles) and
served as a kind of mediator between
the former persecutor, St. Paul, and the
still suspicious Jewish Christians.
When a Christian community developed
at Antioch, Barnabas was sent as the
official representative of the Church of
Jerusalem to incorporate them into the
fold. He and Paul instructed in Antioch
for a year, after which they took relief
contributions to Jerusalem.
Later, Paul and Barnabas, now clearly
seen as charismatic leaders, were sent
by Antioch officials to preach to the
Gentiles. Enormous success crowned
their efforts. After a miracle at Lystra,
the people wanted to offer sacrifice to
them as gods—Barnabas being Zeus,
and Paul, Hermes—but the two said,
“We are of the same nature as you,
human beings. We proclaim to you
good news that you should turn from
these idols to the living God” (see Acts
14:8-18).
But all was not peaceful. They were
expelled from one town, they had
to go to Jerusalem to clear up the
ever-recurring controversy about
circumcision and even the best of
friends can have differences. When
Paul wanted to revisit the places they
had evangelized, Barnabas wanted
to take along John Mark, his cousin,
author of the Gospel (April 25), but Paul
insisted that, since Mark had deserted
them once, he was not fit to take along
now. The disagreement that followed
was so sharp that Barnabas and Paul
separated, Barnabas taking Mark to
Cyprus, Paul taking Silas to Syria. Later,
they were reconciled—Paul, Barnabas
and Mark.
