BARNS FILLED WITH RICHES
The mortgage is paid off. So are the loans that were taken out for college tuition and children’s weddings. The second home
that was once a far-off dream is now so close that it seems safe to dig out the real estate magazines. And then . . . a daughter or son
can no longer take care of a child. It’s time to start over, this time as grandparents in the parents’ role. Thousands of older adults face
this situation today, becoming temporary or permanent guardians of their grandchildren.
Vanity of vanities. The years of toil with sights set on a great reward now belong to someone else: food, clothing, braces,
summer camps, and school tuition.
But, as one grandmother said of her 13-year-old granddaughter, Megan, “It has all been worth it. She brings such joy. What
would I do without her?”
And so the barns filled with “riches” are again taken down and new and true riches are discovered. Once again a new self is
found in Christ, and the storehouse is filled with life that is truly pleasing to God.

FAMILY BAPTISMS AND WEDDINGS
My nephew Javid & his wife, Helen (St. James Spanish Church, London 12/29/12)
I've just got back from Ireland and England. Besides visiting with my two brothers and sisters,
I also love visiting with my twelve nieces and nephews. Thank God, they always make time for me.
I've officiated at some of their weddings in the Catholic Church, but I have attended all their
weddings no matter where they are celebrated. They are all precious to me and to my brothers and
sisters. They have all been raised Catholic and like many other young people, some no longer
attend Church like my generation. Without exception they are modern hardworking and moral young
people with great partners, and now some with beautiful children of their own.
Thank God, they are allowing and inviting me to baptize their children. Maybe, not right
away . . . But before they are too old. I'm not embarrassed to ask them about baptizing their
children, nor should you be with children and grandchildren.
Many grandparents come and ask about their grandchildren's baptisms. Let's talk to each
other. As priests we have to welcome the children as Christ would. Parents through discussion
have to give permission for their children to be baptized. I love the promise of grandparents who say
"I will bring them to Church." Our Holy Father, Pope Francis I, told his priests in Argentina not to
refuse baptism to a child of a single mom . . . .he said "it's not the child's fault."
Please allow Fr. Arnold and myself to assist you. We promise we will respectfully listen to
you about all baptisms and weddings. I pray everyday that together we will bring all our children to
God and the sacraments.

GRANEROS LLENOS DE BIENES
Ya pagamos la hipoteca. Y también los préstamos que se tomaron para
el pago de la universidad y las bodas de los hijos. La segunda casa, que una
vez fue un sueño lejano está ahora tan cerca que sería recomendable empezar a revisar las
revistas de bienes raíces. Y en ese momento. . . un hijo o una hija no puede atender a su propio
hijo. Es entonces tiempo de volver a empezar, esta vez como abuelos en el rol de padres. Miles de
adultos mayores se enfrentan hoy a esa situación, y se convierten en tutores temporales o
permanentes de sus nietos.
Vanidad de vanidades. Los años de trabajo arduo con miras a una gran jubilación hoy
pertenecen a alguien más: comida, ropa, ortodoncia, campamentos, escolaridades.
Pero, como dijo una abuela de su nieta de 13 años, “Todo ha valido la pena. Ella me da una
enorme alegría. ¿Qué haría yo sin ella?”
Y así el granero lleno de “bienes” se vacía y descubrimos nuevas y verdaderas riquezas.
Otra vez encontramos nueva vida en Cristo, y el almacén se llena de la vida que realmente agrada
a Dios.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Del 1 al 5 de agosto los capitalinos en El Salvador celebran la fiesta del Salvador del Mundo,
cuando recuerdan la Transfiguración de Jesús en el Monte Tabor. Como muchas fiestas patronales
en Latinoamérica esta semana está llena de carnavales y desfiles. La celebración principal es una
procesión religiosa con la imagen de Jesús, el Divino Salvador del mundo. La estatua de Jesús con
sus brazos extendidos en bendición es llevada desde la Basílica del Sagrado Corazón hasta la
Catedral Metropolitana. Vestida de un rojo que recuerda su pasión, la imagen es cargada sobre los
hombros de una veintena de fieles. Al llegar a la catedral la imagen patronal es puesta en una torre
de más de 20 metros de alto. Eventualmente la estatua revestida de blanco aparece de una esfera
encima de la torre en medio de gritos, aplausos y cantos. Esta esfera azul representa el mundo
entero, mundo salvado por Cristo. La transfiguración de esta imagen en San Salvador recuerda la
pasión y resurrección de Jesús, eventos claves que han hecho de él, el Salvador del Mundo entero.
