Bros. and Barnum & Bailey,
quienes presentaron para ellos
la misma rutina de entreteni­
miento de las funciones que
ofrecen en el AT&T Center.
La inesperada visita –además
de entretener a los chiquillos
con una función real del circo
de fama internacional (Ring­
ling Bros.)- fue con motivo de
entregar un donativo de 10
mil dólares al fondo de recur­
sos económicos con los que el
hospital sostiene en programas
caritativos de asistencia para

Summer camp jams out the tech way

Not all summer camps require
the outdoors. For a number of
elementary and middle school
students in Texas, camp is all
about coding and tech literacy.
The Youth Code Jam opened
its first year of summer camps
for children from Kindergarten
through eighth grade at Ella
Austin Community Center,
1023 N. Pine St., on Friday
afternoon.
Lenny Scott, youth develop­
ment director at Ella Commu­
nity Austin Center, and Debi
Pfitzenmaier, founder of Youth
Code Jam, were joined by other
camp instructors to officially
begin the youth camp focused
on preparing children for future
technology.
The ultimate goal for Youth
Code Jam is to closely work
with campers on digital literacy
and computer coding basics
both on and off the computer.
They are showing the kids in
the community how to move
beyond just using technology,
taking control of it and using
it to create something unique
and new.
“When I started Youth Code
Jam five years ago, there were
no programming specific camps
around…One of the things we
are trying to do is make pro­
gram camps more accessible
for families,” Pfitzenmaier told
La Prensa.
Pfitzenmaier added that the
students are learning digital
citizenship and, of course, how
to be safe when connecting to
the internet.
“We are teaching them how
to be private with their infor­
mation, stranger danger online
and digital literacy… They are

The program is underwritten
through a recent grant from
Google Fiber in which Scott
wrote a mini grant to the com­
pany for the campers to use the
center’s new computer lab to
create the incredible program. It
was obvious to see that the fund
went to a program full of stu­
dents with excitement ready to
get to their computer and leave
with a rewarding experience.
One of those campers includ­
ed eighth grader John Thomas,
who plans to use this program
to build his future as a meteo­
rologist. He is currently learning
how to make a robot through
Lego Mind Storms, which in­
spires him to think outside the
box.
He happily explains that the
program is similar to the popu­
lar game “Angry Birds,” except
a little more complex. The pro­
gram is allowing Thomas and
other students to learn how to
make the game work by adding
clapping effects and making ob­
jects with scratch bounds.

leads to jobs down the road, as
well as self-confidence, growth
in computational thinking, es­

the 1994 WWF Survivor Series!”

comes to San Antonio on Friday,
July 8 to compete at a River City
Wrestling event.
“I love San Antonio, I’ve wres­
tled in the area since 1988 from
the World Class Championship
Wrestling days to huge Pay-PerView events with World Wres­
tling Entertainment and World
Championship Wrestling,” Jar­
rett said.
The event will take at Turner
Club, 5555 Duffek Dr. The
doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the

opens 2016 health
grant process

In response to continuing
economic challenges and the
uncertainty of state funding
for health care services, Baptist
Health Foundation of San An­
tonio Trustees is granting $6
million in 2016.
On May 1, the Foundation be­
gan accepting Letters of Inquiry
for 2016 Responsive Grants
and Community Impact Grant
applications from 501(c)(3)
nonprofit organizations that are
helping meet the community’s
health needs.
The Community Impact Grant
application deadline has been
extended to noon, Friday, July
15, 2016. Community Impact
applicants include: Groups such
as churches, grass-root organi­
zations and smaller nonprofits
that help meet the health and
wellness needs of their commu­
nities are strongly encouraged
to apply.
Funds awarded for the project
or program should serve resi­
dents in the Foundation’s eightcounty geographic area—Atas­
cosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal,
Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina
and Wilson. The Foundation is
only able to consider one request
per organization per year, and or­
ganizations should have at least
one full year of operating history.

sion process for the grant can
be found on the Baptist Health
Foundation of San Antonio’s

Since the Foundation began

awarded nearly $49 million to

Escalating
temperatures
impacting The
Salvation Army

As a result of the 100-degree
temperatures, The Salvation
Army has opened the lobby of
the Goslinowski Social Services
wing (910 N. Flores) for the
public to use as cooling stations.
Anyone may step inside for a
cup of water and enjoy the air
conditioning from 8:30 a.m. to
5 p.m. and will continue daily
as long as temperatures are ex­
pected to hit 100.
Recent climbing temperatures
have also increased demand for
supplies at The Salvation Army
San Antonio Area Command.
The Emergency Family Shelter,
located at 515 W. Elmira, is
accepting donations to assist
families in need.

Protect yourself from summer stingers

During the summer months,
many families spend extra
time together - going on trips,
enjoying gatherings with fam­
ily and friends and making
memories that last all year.
While the season may be
filled with the sounds of joy
and laughter, a great day can
easily turn into a bad memory
when stinging insects are en­
countered.
Stinging insects are com­
mon summertime pests, and
their stings can be more than
a painful nuisance for you and
your family.
According to the National
Pest Management Associa­
tion (NPMA), stinging insects
such as wasps, yellowjackets,
hornets and bees, send more
than half-a-million people to
the emergency room every
year. While those who are
allergic to stings are most at
risk, anyone can be affected
if a large number of stinging
insects swarm and sting en
masse.
This summer, it is essen­
tial that homeowners take
precautions to prevent stings
and stay safe outdoors by
routinely checking to ensure
their property is free from
hives and nests.
You should check the ex­
terior of your home, paying
special attention to over­
hangs, eaves, the underside
of porches and decks, shrubs,
trees, sheds and other struc­
tures.
If you find a nest on your
property, do not get too close
and do not attempt to remove
it. Instead, hire a trained pest
control professional to relo­

• Eliminate standing water
and other sources of moisture
around the home.
• Keep trash cans covered
and sealed.
• When dining outside,
keep food covered until ready

plastic cups for your guests,
as aluminum cans and plastic
bottles are good hiding spots
for stinging insects.
• If approached by a stinging
insect, remain calm and quiet.
Avoid swaying or swinging, as
this may provoke an attack.
• Avoid wearing dark colors
and floral prints, loose-fitting
garments, open-toe shoes and
sweet-smelling perfumes or
colognes.
Some stinging insects pose
more serious threats than
others. A trained pest control
professional will be able to
properly identify a pest spe­
cies and determine the risk to
your family.

sin embargo, el método en el que el aceite vegetal emulsionado
(EVO, por sus siglas en inglés) se inyecta difiere. El remedio en la
enmienda es bioestimulación con la fracturación hidráulica como
el método de la inyección, mientras que el remedio modificado
es bioestimulación con la inyección a través de alimentación por

Marie Sanchez y el “All Star Le­
gay Award” a Sebastien De La
Cruz, dos jovencitos que ya no
necesitan presentación inicial
ante el público local, pues son
ampliamente conocidos pues
han destacado como artistas
desde temprana edad.
Isabel Marie Sanchez nació
En el Teatro Jo Long, Isabel Marie y Sebastien De La Cruz
recibieron premios y homenaje de Network for Young Ar­

en Chicago y reside desde hace
tiempo en San Antonio.
Entre otras importantes pre­
sentaciones obtuvo el primer
lugar de un concurso de Uni­
visión dentro del programa
Sábado Gigante.
Esta jovencita de 13 años cul­
tiva el género de la música típica
mexicana, pero su inquietud le
abre otros caminos gracias a la
calidad de su sonora voz que le
dan una versátil presencia en los
escenarios.
Isabel Marie Sanchez ha
tenido numerosas invitaciones
para cantar el himno nacional,
por ejemplo a los 11 años lo
interpretó en la convención
nacional de LULAC, en la ex­
posición de People en Español
y, a nivel local, ha cantado el
himno en la apertura de Fiesta
San Antonio.
No es aventurado decir de
ella que no es una promesa: es
una realidad.
Por su parte, Sebastien De La
Cruz, quien posee una natural
madurez en el escenario –a
pesar de ser apenas un ado­
lescente–, recibió sus primeras
lecciones de canto en la agencia
Network for Young Artists.
De la noche a la mañana
alcanzó gran popularidad ante
el auditorio local por la inter­
pretación del himno nacional
en un juego final de la NBA en
el AT&T Center.
La entrega de premios Net­
work for Young Artist se efectuó
el sábado en el Jo Long Theatre
de Carver Community Center.

SAFC sostendrá partidos consecutivos en Toyota Field

Con los buenos resultados
que ha obtenido el equipo San
Antonio FC (SAFC), propiedad
de la empresa Spurs Sports &
Entertainment (SS&E), su en­
trenador técnico Darren Powell
se encuentra puesto para darle
la bien­venida a tres clubes en
partidos del rol regular de la tem­
porada 2016 USL.
Con 15 partidos jugados, de
los 30 que marca la temporada,
SAFC se encuentra en el décimo
escaño de la tabla general en la
Conferencia del Oeste, que es co­
mandada por Whitecaps FC 2 de
Vancouver, que tiene 32 puntos;
seguido por LA Galaxy II con 29
puntos, Sacramento Republic FC
con 28 unidades, Switchbacks
FC de Colorado Springs con 26
puntos.
En el quinto lugar los “Toros”
de Río Grande Valley FC tienen
24 puntos.
SAFC en 15 partidos tiene
récord de 5 victorias (tres consecu­
tivas), 5 derrotas, 5 empates y 20
puntos. Está ubicado en el décimo
lugar por encima del United SC de
Arizona, Sounders FC de Seattle y
Roughnecks FC de Tulsa.
SAFC comenzó el mes de julio
visitando el domingo 3 a los
Roughnecks FC de Tulsa, donde
tuvieron la fortuna de adjudicarse
su tercer triunfo consecutivo con
goles anotados por el delantero
estelar Michael Reed, quien abrió
el marcador con el primer tanto en
el minuto 56.
Reed ejecutó un disparo aporta­
do por el alero colombiano Rafa
Catillo. El segundo gol cayó en
el minuto 80 fabricado por el
delantero Franck Tayou (recién
contratado), quien aprovechó
asistencia del alero angelino Car­
los Álvarez.
Por Tulsa el gol del honor fue
anotado en el minuto 90 por
el mediocampista guatemalteco
Jason Ramos Carpio, quien le
cumplió a su director técnico Da­
vid Irving, quien hubiera querido
cuando menos el empate en su
sede el estadio ONEOK Field.
“Tulsa peleó duro, nos dio
batalla en la defensiva y ofensiva,
no se lograba poner el balones
dentro de su cabaña; sin em­
bargo, vino el gol tempranero en
la segunda mitad y el segundo
al minuto 80. Reed sigue incon­
tenible y Tayou se ha venido
acoplando al plan de juego del
equipo. Tayou tiene habilidades
para seguir adelante en nuestro
programa, dijo el entrenador
técnico Darren Powell.
Tayou llegó al SAFC como
jugador del fútbol de salón.
“Se me dio la oportunidad de
anotar gol tras envío de Rafa
Castillo, quien es todo un experto
en ese tipo de asistencias. Todo
nos resultó perfecto y se logró
concretar el triunfo con gol del
compañero Franck Tayou”, dijo
Reed.
SAFC en su retorno al estadio
Toyota Field se estará concentran­
do para comenzar su primero de
tres partidos consecutivos.
El próximo sábado 9 en el
horario de las 7:30 p.m. será
anfitrión del Energy FC de Okla­
homa City, con el que estará
sosteniendo su tercer partido del
rol regular.
SAFC en su primera cita en
OKC contra Energy FC empató
1-1.
Energy FC al pagar visita el
sábado 21 de mayo se llevó la vic­
toria con marcador de 0-1, por lo
que SAFC estará forzado a darle
a su legión de fans la satisfacción
de ganar o cuando menos lograr
un empate.
El segundo partido del mes
(julio) SAFC recibirá el sábado 16
(7:30 p.m.) al líder Whitecaps FC
2, en lo que será su único combate
