Note From the Editor
I
ts summer in Texas and baseball
season is just about reaching its
mid-point. Los Rangers are looking
great and my fingers are crossed
that maybe this year is the year we
finally grasp that championship.
Although, ask any kid going to the
BallPark in Arlington to see a game
and he or she will tell you that the
only game that matters is the game
they’re about to see. In the eyes of a
young fan, every Rangers game feels
like a championship game.
Maybe that why I see so many
young bilingües in organized sports
these days, particularly baseball.
You’ll learn in this issue of Mercado
that nearly a quarter of Los Rangers
are Latino. Young Rangers fans hear
all the latino last names being read
out over the loud speakers at the
Ballpark and its no wonder they
begin seeing themselves as the next
Nelson Cruz.
It’s not just baseball, though. Latino
kids are mastering all kinds of
sports now and they’re training for
stardom younger and younger. Take
a look at some of the photographs
on this page, taken by fellow
Mercado Bilingüe readers of their
own children, and it’s easy to see
that the tradition of using sports to
instill a sense of accomplishment
and “ganas” in our children is still in
full effect. I don’t have any children
myself but if I did, they would
definitely be playing little league, or
taking karate lessons, playing soccer
or some kind of organized sports.
Paul Flores, a reader of Mercado
Bilingüe and a teacher in Oak Cliff
who often coaches a youth basketball
team told me,” The students in
organized sports learn teamwork
and it provides another example
for young people to learn that
hard work and practice is needed
to meet goals. It also provides a
different outlet for them to express
themselves.” An expression of the
self is a great definition of the whole
idea behind sports and as bilingües
living a multi-cultural life, what kind
“self” do we bring to the sports we
play? This is a question we touch
on with this issue you hold in your
holds and we hope you send us your
impressions of the sport of baseball,
the role Latinos play in baseball or in
what way sports impact your life.

Texas, Rodriguez hit .304 with
217 homers and 842 RBIs. He
ranks second in club history in hits
(1747), doubles (352), and multihit games (490).

American League MVP in 1999
when he helped lead the Rangers
to the third of three consecutive

and Univision will be bringing us “El
Rey”, a bilingual television network
with Latino centric programs aimed
at the American Hispanic. Until
then, turn on your television and
you won’t see many Latinos or
Latino centric shows beyond the
usual Spanish language networks.
That doesn’t mean Latinos aren’t
trying – they’ve just taken to the
web instead. Here’s a brief list of
new and slightly older web series
made by Latinos, starring Latinos
and telling Latino stories. Some
are good, some are not but check
them out for yourself. You may
just find your new favorite show
this summer.
Venazulas, a modern American
Hispanic family living in suburban

teenage angst in the modern day
high schools of East Los Angeles. The
list of characters are nothing new:
there’s the soft-spoken do-gooder,
the jock with a heart, the bitchybut-most-popular-girl-in-school, the
sex-crazed jokester, the mysterious
outcast, the nerd and the cholo.
That last character is unique to
L.A. and perhaps it’s an example
of why East Los High
is not a good series.
It doesn’t matter
that half the cast give
less than average
performances or that many of the
scenarios that move the story along
seem implausible – what ends up
mattering most is the inability to
connect with any
character in the show.

Willie Jr and the colorful cast of
“barflies” who have no problem
giving Willie a piece of their mind
when it comes to Willie’s love
life. The flavor of the diverse
Latino communities that make up
Brooklyn, and the ways in which
their lives interconnect to create
an extended family, are smartly
woven into the comedic threads of
this show; you also feel like these
people really do exist somewhere
in New York. Web-series like East
Los High force the audience to be
an outsider looking in, whereas
in East WillyB you’re invited to
pull up a stool, order a beer,
everyone knows your name and
the hilariously witty antics ensue

This spring, the Baylor Health Sciences Library is pleased to unveil a
complete renovation of its public spaces, including a large beautiful
common area, featuring rotating art exhibitions by emerging and
established area artists. For the inaugural exhibit the library has
chosen to feature Oak Cliff native and Mercado Bilingüe’s resident
arts expert, Patricia Rodriguez. Patricia’s complex and colorful
paintings pulse with elegant organic forms including roots, stems,
and the flora and fauna of a dreamlike natural world. The artist is
inspired by the colorful sand mandalas made by Tibetan monks that
demonstrate the interconnectedness and impermanence of life.

Wordpress is a module that you

to install Wordpress templates.
Wordpress is a little harder to use
than Weebly, but it can offer much
more in terms of customization.
The Fax Machine
The fax machine, while still relevant,
is a piece of equipment that is dying
for an upgrade. Internet faxing
can reduce the need for a physical
machine and the extra fax phone
line. With this service, you are
provided a local number, or toll free
if you so desire. When a customer
sends a fax to your number, instead
of ringing on a machine in your
office, the fax gets delivered to your
email. Sending a fax is just as easy
as emailing a document. Smart Fax

Summer Eats!:
Bocadillos Para el Verano

Directions:
ummer is here and with the
temperatures already rising, no
one wants to waste a beautiful
sunny day slaving over a hot stove.
So, I wanted to share two quick
and easy recipes with you so you
can make better use of your time
relaxing and cooling down by
the pool.
Quick note before you begin: both
of these quick and delicious summer
recipes include pico de gallo, so you
can make a big batch for one and
save for the rest for later to use in
the other recipe or enjoy on its own
with tortilla chips.
Hot Dogs

8 hot dog wieners
8 hot dog buns
1 tbs butter
Sour cream, as needed
Mustard, as needed
Dash of Cholula or Tapatio
hot sauce
Pico de Gallo

1 medium tomato
1/2 medium onion
1 jalapeno pepper
(optional)
Cilantro
Salt, to taste
1. Chop tomatoes, onions, cilantro and jalapeños to make the.
2. Mix them up or leave separated and set aside.
3. Divide the butter and spread
evenly on the inside of the hot
dog buns.
4. Lay the buttered side down
flat on a medium-hot skillet to
toast the buns; check frequently. Flip to the other side when
the inside is nice and toasty.
Leave on for a minute just to
warm up the outside of the
bun and remove.
5. Slice open the hot dog wieners
and lay flat on the hot skillet,
pressing down with a spatula
to heat evenly. Grill on both
sides until heated through.

Dallas Zoo
will give animal enthusiasts valuable
hands-on keeper knowledge.

ake this summer one to
remember by signing up for summer
camps at The Dallas Zoo. These
programs for kids ages preK through
twelfth grade are designed to engage
both mind and body in hands-on,
original activities that cannot be
experienced anywhere else.
Camps start on June 24 and run
through Aug. 16.
Campers will be able to explore the
Zoo like never before with closeup encounters, behind the scenes
tours and the ability to observe and
investigate animal behaviors. Here
are just a few of the options:
PreK: In Ready, Set, Go WILD,
campers investigate to find out who
hops, swings, runs and slithers in
the animals world and learn about
animal movements.
K-1st grade: The Animal Athletes
camp will let campers meet the Zoo’s
most amazing animal athletes and
discover who are the top jumpers and
sprinters, who has amazing strength
and how they compare to the best of
the best in the animal world.
Grades 4-5: Keeper Camp gives
children an opportunity to find out
what it would be like to be an animal
keeper at the Dallas Zoo. This camp

Las raíces de VW
El aprecio que tengo por la marca
Volkswagen surgió cuando estaba en
el último año de secundaria y fui a
mi primer encuentro de VW clásicos.
Un amigo tenía un sedán modelo
65 y me convenció para que fuera
al encuentro anual “Bug In” que se
realizaba en el Texas Motorplex de
Ennis, Texas. Fue entonces cuando
me enamoré del sedán VW clásico
(anterior al modelo 67) y comencé a
apreciar los Volkswagen en general.
Con el correr de los años,
Volkswagen se ha convertido en una
marca europea muy respetada que
produce vehículos con mucho estilo
y de buen rendimiento. El CC Sport
Plus 2013 es uno de ellos.
Estilo dinámico
Una de las mejores características
del Volkswagen CC 2013 es su
estilo de lujo. Este automóvil es
atractivo y accesible. Su destacable
diseño empieza con el techo súper
bajo y la inclinación del parabrisas,
que hacen que el CC luzca como si
estuviese avanzando cuando está
perfectamente detenido. Las luces
delanteras Bi-Xenon y las llantas
de aleación de 18 pulgadas con 5
rayos le otorgan al exterior una
terminación muy agradable.
A pesar de que el CC es bastante
largo y proporciona bastante
espacio en el interior para las
piernas, el techo bajo y las líneas de
perfil agresivas le otorgan un estilo
europeo elegante y de lujo. De esta
forma, Volkswagen ha creado un
automóvil relativamente accesible
(nuestro bien equipado vehículo de

luce más costoso de lo que es en
realidad.
El estilo de lujo del CC 2013 continúa
en el interior del automóvil. El tablero
y el área del sistema de información
y entretenimiento son de una
combinación de aluminio pulido,
plástico sintético blando y bandas
de aluminio de color. Los asientos
delanteros de cuero artificial con
ajuste eléctrico y calefacción (a los
que VW llama “V-Tex”) se sienten
mucho más cómodos de lo que
verdaderamente son.

que sea un placer manejar el CC Sport
Plus, algo que distingue desde hace
mucho tiempo a Volkswagen. Este
motor cuenta con una transmisión
automática de 6 velocidades DSG®
y alcanza los 200 caballos de fuerza
y las 207 libras-pie de torsión. Para
un sedán familiar, estas cifras de
rendimiento son suficientes para
que el automóvil funcione bien. El
cálculo de economía de combustible
según la Agencia de Protección
Ambiental es de 22 mpg en ciudad
y 31 mpg en carretera (promedio de
25 mpg).
