Excuses Offered by the Sad (continued) Many times, the disgust is disgust because we want to be disgusted, like restive horses who jump backwards not because there may be an occasion for fear, but because they themselves create the fear. The example of Jonah: “I am greatly afflicted. Lord, take my soul for it is better for me to die than to live.” And the Lord says, “Let go of your anger. You will not see Ninevah destroyed after 40 days as was predicted.” Jonah believed that all of Ninevah might speak ill of him as one who prophesied false things. If so, then go to Mary St. Louis de Montfort once asked, “When will the Church be renewed?” He responded, “When the Church breathes Mary as the body breathes air.” That gives us much to reflect on as we begin this yearly time of renewal, the Season of Lent. If we want to convert deeply and to become authentically holy, then we too must go to Mary. There can be no conversion and no growth in holiness without grace, and God has freely chosen to give us all graces through Mary. Thus in order to find grace, we must go to Mary – more and more and more. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta deeply believed this as well, and thus complete entrustment to Mary was at the very heart of her life. Mother Teresa told her Sisters, “The more we abandon ourselves to her totally and without reserve, the greater will be the number of great saints in our Society – for nothing is impossible for those whose Mother she is.” Fr. Joseph Langford, the founder of the priestly branch of Mother Teresa’s Society, wrote that many people have tried to imitate Mother Teresa in her prayer and her love for the poor, but “they do not share in the depth of her relationship with Jesus crucified,” because “they don’t have her relationship with Our Lady.” If we want deep union with Jesus then let us entrust all that we are and have without reserve to Our Lady. To be able to invite her into our life and to entrust everything to her was Jesus’ gift to us from the cross. (cf. John 19:25-27) Our Lady will take everything with all of its imperfections and stains. She will purify our offering. She will embellish it with her graces and merits. She will then offer it to her Son. As a result our lives will give to God the greatest possible glory. She will use all the value of our good actions and dispose of them as she sees fit, and thus our lives will also enrich the Church in the greatest possible manner. Let’s surrender everything to her so that our lives are no longer ours, but totally and without reserve hers. Let’s seek to be led only by her. Mother Teresa was often seen with a rosary in her hand even when she was not praying it. When asked why, she stated that she wanted to be constantly led by Our Lady, as if by the hand. What can we do so that this becomes ever more true in our lives? I list here a few things. 1. Pray. When Our Lady comes from heaven she is always inviting us to pray. There is a certain urgency in her words. At Fatima she said, “Pray, pray much.” Her words were accompanied by a powerful and penetrating grace that led the three children to spend hours daily in prayer, a prayer that profoundly transformed them, and we can be sure that it had a deep, beneficial influence upon the world as well. A beautiful practice is to wake up a bit earlier in the morning, and to begin our day by entrusting ourselves to her. Let’s pray the rosary, being open to listening to her while meditating upon her and the mysteries of her Son’s life. Let’s reflect on the Gospel of the day, listening attentively, like her, to her Son. If you are already doing this, then ask Our Lady to take you even deeper. Her desire is to lead us to daily Mass, daily Communion, Eucharistic adoration, and an ever deeper spirit of prayer in the midst of our daily activities. 2. Conversion and penance. Through prayer Our Lady and the Holy Spirit are able to speak to our hearts and we are able to perceive their guidance. This guidance, always given in peace, is a hope-filled invitation to conversion. This conversion is (continued on page 6) Intentions of Pope Benedict XVI for the Month of March General: That the role of women may be more appreciated and used to good advantage in every country in the world. Mission: That in the light of the letter addressed to them by Pope Benedict XVI, the Bishops, priests, consecrated persons, and lay faithful of the Catholic Church in the Popular Republic of China may commit themselves to being the sign and instrument of unity, communion and peace. P. If so, then go to Mary (continued) essentially interior repentance, which is a radical turning away from all that is evil, and a loving submission with all of our hearts to God. It is accompanied by an unlimited trust in the infinite mercy of God. We hope from Him not only the forgiveness of our sins but an unimaginable holiness of life. This interior repentance can be expressed in many ways but divine revelation insists above all on three: fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. Fasting expresses our conversion in relation to ourselves, prayer in our relation to God, and almsgiving in our relationship to others. This interior repentance should lead us as well to the frequent practice of the Sacrament of Penance. The children of Fatima led by Our Lady filled their lives with so many little sacrifices for the salvation of others that the totality of their lives became a holocaust to the merciful love of God. Through this prayer and penance Our Lady communicated to them a deep holiness of life. When Jacinta is canonized she will be the youngest non-martyr saint in the history of the Church. Our Lady can do the same also for us. 3. Read about Our Lady. There are many good works that can inspire us to have a deeper confidence, love, and abandonment to Our Lady. The following are some that many have found particularly helpful: works by St. Luis de Montfort, The Secret of the Rosary, The Secret of Mary, and True Devotion to Mary; St. Maximilian Kolbe’s Aim Higher; Marian Shrines of France; and Fatima in Lucia’s Own Words. This total entrustment of ourselves to Our Lady gives her great joy because it gives her the freedom to be able to act within our lives, to protect us, guide us, and to use our lives for the salvation of others. At the same time it is a source of tremendous joy and hope for us. What a beautiful thing, that our lives no longer be ours, but only hers. What beautiful things she has in store for us. She will bring us into deep intimacy with Jesus, who is ever making “all things new.” Let’s live the best Lent of our lives. Let’s go to Mary. Fr. Vamos a María.
