T
he "struggle" of the weekend's readings is a
struggle stay with one's purpose. The first
reading is one of the "Suffering Servant
Songs" from the middle of the scroll of Isaiah. This part of
the book was written, we think, by a nameless poet who
believed that one way to understand "why we are here" is
to look at what keeps coming up causing us discomfort. A
one-time thing may be a fluke--an accident. But when a
painful issue consistently presents itself, time and time
again, maybe I should pay attention. It may be telling me
what my life is really about. Isaiah saw Israel's "role" in
the world as one of "drawing the Gentile nations to the
One, True God of Israel. If they ever gave up in disgust,
even though the Gentiles hurt them, beat them, pulled their
beard, struck and spit on them, they would cease to be
"Israel," for to be Israel meant to be a "draw-er of the
world to the One God." The second reading says that the
poor are there to help remind us of who and what we are
supposed to be. We all know we should be kind and generous and help the needy, so when a beggar raises his
hand, it is a poignant reminder--demanding us to BE the
person we've been called to be. In the Gospel, Jesus realizes that "living out His purpose," will involve pain and
death. Peter doesn't like that, and wants to convince Him to
find a softer way...but there is no other way! Jesus must
struggle to be true to Himself, and Peter will have to
learn to struggle to become the disciple and leader Christ
calls him to be. He got a rocky start, but got it right in the
end.

L

of her devotion took root in early Louisiana.
As first a French and then Spanish colony,
Louisiana was throughout its colonial period
a reflection of the larger Catholic Atlantic
world where the respective Crowns decreed
that only Catholicism would be practiced."

oday’s readings again challenge us to
look at our lives. Just as Pope Francis is
asking us to look deeply into our hearts
and souls to see how we live our faith. Jesus tells
the Disciples plainly that having faith in him is not
simply an activity that we engage in with our
minds. It involves a commitment of our whole
selves, soul and body. It is not enough just to say
the words. Our actions and words must be how we
live our faith. We have been having Ministry Fairs
these weeks. Is there a way you can put
your faith into action? Stop by the tables
and see.

L

What a blessing our guests had
from the Bread Of Life Ministry. Our guests were not just
served and given food for their

the Bread Of Life Ministry
served spiritual lasting nourishment for the soul filled with
love, compassion and hope.
Oscar read inspiring passages
from the bible and delivered a
soul stirring message that
touched our guests. The day
was extremely hot and the
guests were hungry for food
for their bodies they were
quiet and listened and seemed
to absorb the message from
this awesome God filled man
who is so on fire for the
Lord. Oscar and Alicia arranged to have the message
delivered in both Spanish and
English. God's presence surely

Reflections from The Joy of the Gospel
Espacio para el Papa Francisco
Reflexiones de La Alegría del Evangelio
“I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting, and
dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather
than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security” (49).
seguridades” (49).
“Before all else, the Gospel invites us to respond to
the God of love who saves us, to see God in others
and to go forth from ourselves to seek the
good of others” (39).
“Whenever we encounter another person in
love, we learn something new about
God” (272).

Human trafficking and technology
La tecnología y la Trata de Personas
Teenagers spend a lot of time online, making them prime
targets for human traffickers. Using online ads that promise money and adventure in exciting, glamorous cities,
traffickers attract young women and girls. Parents should
be aware of the serious dangers online, and monitor what
their children are doing—what sites they visit, social networks they may belong to, and who they are connecting
with online. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Human
