En el Greenbelt Forest Preserve, crece un
jardín. Allí, alumnos de preparatoria aprenden a plantar, cuidar y cultivar verduras. Pero
también crece la confianza en sí mismos, la
habilidad de trabajar en equipo y el conocimiento para comer saludablemente.
Todo es parte del Green Youth Farm, un
programa dirigido por el Jardín Botánico de
Chicago y el Distrito de Reservas Forestales
del Condado de Lake.
Gloria Ciaccio, vocera del Jardín Botánico,
dijo que la granja fue creada para ofrecer un
programa de capacitación laboral para la juventud. La granja Greenbelt en North Chicago se convirtió en la primera y se ha expandido a cuatro lugares en el Condado de Cook.
“Cuando la gente dice que trabajo en una
granja, no me creen”, dijo Carlos Rodríguez,
de 17 años, a quien le gusta traer tomates y
tomatillos a su casa en North Chicago.
Los alumnos de preparatoria entregan su
solicitud y pasan por una entrevista. Laura
Erickson, quien con su esposo, Kevin, trabaja
con los alumnos, dijo que hace 3 años los 20
alumnos que solicitaron entrar al programa
fueron aceptados. Este año, 90 alumnos solicitaron, pero 25 fueron los seleccionados.
Parte del programa consiste en mantener
el jardín que los alumnos comenzaron a mediados de mayo. Ellos siembran, quitan malas hierbas, riegan y cosechan. Kevin dijo que
los alumnos también asisten a talleres para
aprender agricultura orgánica y la cadena del
sistema alimenticio. “Lo bueno de este programa es que aprenden habilidades de jardinería que pueden usar en sus casas en sus
propios jardines”, dijo Laura.
El jardín es de acre y medio y cuenta con
más de 100 cultivos, incluyendo tomates, chiles, papas, berenjenas, cebollas, manzanos,
perales, vegetales y pepinos. También cuenta
con una variedad de plantas nativas. Laura
agregó que el jardín refleja lo que los clientes
piden, como los tomatillos. “Tratamos de producir lo que piden nuestros clientes”, dijo.
Mucho de lo que cultivan los alumnos se
vende en el puesto del Green Youth Farm, de
9 a.m. a 1 p.m. los sábados.

Laura dijo que muchos de sus clientes
reciben ayuda del programa Women, Infant
and Children. Los alumnos recientemente
fueron a una oficina local de WIC e hicieron
una demostración de cocina usando los vegetales que cultivan. También llevaron cajas
pre-ensambladas para entregar a los clientes

It’s all part of the Green Youth Farm,
a program run by the Chicago Botanic
Garden and Lake County Forest Preserve District.
Gloria Ciaccio, spokeswoman for the
Chicago Botanic Garden, said the farm
was created to offer a job skills training
program for area youth. The Greenbelt
farm in North Chicago became the
first site and has expanded to four sites
through Cook County.
“When people say that I work at a
farm, they don’t believe me,” said Carlos Rodriguez, 17, who loves to bring
tomatoes and tomatillos to his North
Chicago home.
Promoting the program at high
schools, students apply and go through
an interview. Laura Erickson, who
along with her husband, Kevin, works
with students, said three years ago, all
20 students who applied were selected.
This year, 90 students applied, and 25
were selected.
Part of the program is learning
to maintain the garden, which students began in mid-May and continue
through October. Students can be
found seeding and weeding, watering
and harvesting. Kevin Erickson said
students also attend workshops to learn
organic farming, what is compost and
the food system chain.
“The great thing about this program
is they learn tangible gardening skills
they can translate to home for their own
personal gardens,” Laura Erickson said.
The garden is 1½ acres and features
more than 100 crops.

Después de dos años de funcionamiento,
el Community Connections Center ubicado
en el lado sur de Mount Prospect parece gozar de un gran éxito, según la opinión de los

El centro comunitario abrió sus puertas
en el 2009 en un centro comercial cerca de la
intersección de las calles Algonquin y Busse.

Morgan said the village continues to
look at new ways to utilize the center.
“We want to build on the success
we’ve already had,” she said.

time you get a refill. There may be new information. This leaflet does not take the place
of talking with your doctor about your medical condition or treatment. If you have any
questions about DIOVAN, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?
Taking DIOVAN during pregnancy can cause injury and even death to your unborn
baby. If you get pregnant, stop taking DIOVAN and call your doctor right away.
Talk to your doctor about other ways to lower your blood pressure if you plan to
become pregnant.
What is DIOVAN?
DIOVAN is a prescription medicine called an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It is
used in adults to:
! lower high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, 6 to 16 years of age.
! treat heart failure in adults. In these patients, DIOVAN may lower the need for hospitalization that happens from heart failure.
! improve the chance of living longer after a heart attack (myocardial infarction) in
adults.
DIOVAN is not for children under 6 years of age or children with certain kidney
problems.
High Blood Pressure (Hypertension). Blood pressure is the force in your blood vessels when your heart beats and when your heart rests. You have high blood pressure
when the force is too much. DIOVAN can help your blood vessels relax so your blood
pressure is lower.
High blood pressure makes the heart work harder to pump blood throughout the
body and causes damage to the blood vessels. If high blood pressure is not treated,
it can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure and vision problems.
Heart Failure occurs when the heart is weak and cannot pump enough blood to your
lungs and the rest of your body. Just walking or moving can make you short of
breath, so you may have to rest a lot.
Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction): A heart attack is caused by a blocked artery
that results in damage to the heart muscle.
What should I tell my doctor before taking DIOVAN?
Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions including whether you:
! have any allergies. See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of ingredients in
DIOVAN.
! have a heart condition
! have liver problems
! have kidney problems
! are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. See “What is the most important
information I should know about DIOVAN?”
! are breast-feeding. It is not known if DIOVAN passes into your breast milk. You and
your doctor should decide if you will take DIOVAN or breast-feed, but not both. Talk
with your doctor about the best way to feed your baby if you take DIOVAN.
Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor
if you take:
! other medicines for high blood pressure or a heart problem
! water pills (also called “diuretics”)
! potassium supplements
! a salt substitute
! nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen or naproxen)
Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of your medicines with you to show to your
doctor and pharmacist when a new medicine is prescribed. Talk to your doctor or
pharmacist before you start taking any new medicine. Your doctor or pharmacist will
know what medicines are safe to take together.
How should I take DIOVAN?
! Take DIOVAN exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
! For treatment of high blood pressure, take DIOVAN one time each day, at the same
time each day.
! If your child cannot swallow tablets, or if tablets are not available in the prescribed
strength, your pharmacist will mix DIOVAN as a liquid suspension for your child. If
your child switches between taking the tablet and the suspension, your doctor will
adjust the dose as needed. Shake the bottle of suspension well for at least 10 seconds before pouring the dose of medicine to give to your child.
! For adult patients with heart failure or who have had a heart attack, take DIOVAN two
times each day, at the same time each day. Your doctor may start you on a low dose
of DIOVAN and may increase the dose during your treatment.
! DIOVAN can be taken with or without food.
! If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next dose,
do not take the missed dose. Take the next dose at your regular time.
! If you take too much DIOVAN, call your doctor or Poison Control Center, or go to
the nearest hospital emergency room.
What are the possible side effects of DIOVAN?
DIOVAN may cause the following serious side effects:
Injury or death to an unborn baby. See “What is the most important information I
should know about DIOVAN?”
Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension). Low blood pressure is most likely to happen if
you also take water pills, are on a low-salt diet, get dialysis treatments, have heart
problems, or get sick with vomiting or diarrhea. Lie down, if you feel faint or dizzy.
Call your doctor right away.
Kidney problems. Kidney problems may get worse in people that already have kidney disease. Some people will have changes on blood tests for kidney function and
may need a lower dose of DIOVAN. Call your doctor if you get swelling in your feet,
ankles, or hands, or unexplained weight gain. If you have heart failure, your doctor
should check your kidney function before prescribing DIOVAN.
The most common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people with high blood
pressure include:
! headache
! tiredness
! dizziness
! stomach (abdominal) pain
! flu symptoms
Side effects were generally mild and brief. They generally have not caused patients to
stop taking DIOVAN.
The most common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people with heart failure
include:
! dizziness
! joint and back pain
! low blood pressure
! tiredness
! diarrhea
! high blood potassium
Common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people after a heart attack which
caused them to stop taking the drug include:
! low blood pressure
! cough
! high blood creatinine (decreased kidney function)
! rash
Tell your doctor if you get any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away.
These are not all the possible side effects of DIOVAN. For a complete list, ask your
doctor or pharmacist.
How do I store DIOVAN?
! Store DIOVAN tablets at room temperature between 59° to 86°F (15°C-30°C).
! Keep DIOVAN tablets in a closed container in a dry place.
! Store bottles of DIOVAN suspension at room temperature less than 86°F (30°C) for
up to 30 days, or refrigerate between 35°F-46°F (2°C-8°C) for up to 75 days.
! Keep DIOVAN and all medicines out of the reach of children.

Pollo con Arroz Sazonado con Mango
INGREDIENTS:
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts,
flattened if very thick
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
1 package Uncle Ben’s Ready Whole Grain
Medley Brown & Wild Rice
2 large, ripe but firm mangos, peeled,
pit ted and diced
1 green onion, thinly sliced
⅓ cup shelled roasted and salted pistachios
3 tablespoons dried cranberries
pinch or dash cinnamon
pinch or dash allspice
INSTRUCTIONS:
Season chicken on both sides with salt
and pepper. Stir together rice, mango, onion,
pistachios, cranberries and spices in a medium foil pan or on a very large piece of heavy
duty foil. Place about ⅓ cup of rice mixture
in the center of each chicken breast. Bring in
the ends and sides to enclose, then tie with
kitchen string to seal in filling. Grill over me-
dium-high heat for 5 minutes on each side,
then place chicken on top of remaining rice
mixture. Cover with foil or seal foil package,
leaving room for air to circulate. Grill for 5
minutes more.
Serving Tips: If desired, slice chicken into
medallions to serve.
Cook Time: 15 to 20 minutes
INGREDIENTES:

y durable. Pon aproximadamente ⅓ de taza
de la mezcla de arroz en el centro de cada filete de pollo. Junta las orillas y los lados del
pollo para encerrar la mezcla, y amárralo con

The lovely interior of Blue 60 (named
for its walls and location) coupled with good
drinks and food, make it a sports bar worth
visiting even if you’re not interested in the
game.
MOTIF: Tables are topped with images of
star athletes including Michael Jordan, Babe
Ruth and Lou Gehrig, sometimes accompanied by images of documents like the trade
agreement that sent the Bambino from the
Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees. An
artist recreated sports photos on the walls,
with murals featuring Walter Payton and Pat
Tillman in the back. The 16 flat screen TVs
are tuned to sports, with the booths in the
back having their own sets. The bar has golf,
bowling and boxing video games and electronic darts, with a dart league in the works.
CROWD: Families tend to come in for dinner, with the crowd getting younger as the
night gets later. Workers stop in for lunch.
The bar sponsors several local sports teams,
who hang out after their games.
SERVICE: Our server was friendly and attentive. She checked back regularly and was
good at offering drink recommendations.
Owner Steve Itsines is a regular fixture, walking around the bar chatting with every group
of customers and changing channels to put
on requested games.
LIQUID CONSUMPTION: The large beer list
features plenty of craft brews like Dogfish
Head and Breckenridge Vanilla Porter, which
disappointingly didn’t taste much like vanilla.
Blue 60 also offers a solid menu of signature
cocktails. The Mr. Freeze is a fruity mix of
vodka, Blue Curacao, blackberry schnapps,
sour mix and 7-Up. The Rock Star, a bright
red blend of tequila, raspberry liqueur, triple
sec and sour mix, has a refreshing citrusy fla-

The half-pound burgers are cooked to order
and served with fries, sweet potato fries, bleu

served with one of five sauces, including buffalo, Parmesan garlic and mango-teriyaki. If
you have a big group or just a big appetite, go
for The Ultimate Tailgate, a sampler featuring wings, mozzarella sticks, Blue 60 chips
and a soft pretzel.
The menu also offers some healthier options. Diners not interested in standard bar
fare can order an ahi tuna salad or veggie wrap
with roasted vegetables and goat cheese.
MUSIC: The bar is still waiting on its entertainment license, but wants to host karaoke and live blues and jazz bands.
PARKING: There are plenty of spots in the
bar’s free lot.
OVERALL: Blue 60 is a shrine to sports history and a great new place to watch it unfold.

singer Shakira are known worldwide, but not
just for their artistic talent. The energy these
stars bring on the stage is a sign of how their
careers have been driven by passion. That’s
why it’s no wonder that they would both take
on political issues that are close to their heart.
This month President Barack Obama appointed Shakira a member of the Commission for Educational Excellence for Hispanics. And this year Eva Longoria was involved
in producing a documentary that supports
the rights of migrant child laborers.

Longoria says she lent her support to “The
Harvest,” a documentary about child migrant
laborers, not just because of her Latin American roots but also because she wants to know
where her food comes from and take responsibility for it.
Much of the harvesting work in the United States is done by migrants from Latin
America, especially Mexico. But Longoria’s
interest in the subject didn’t spring from her
roots, but from concern over children growing up in the fields, the “Desperate Housewives” star says.
“I’mninth-generationMexican-American.
We have ranches in Texas, but you don’t have
to have that to have compassion,” Longoria
said. “I eat food and I’m a responsible human
being and if you are responsible, you have to
know where your food comes from.”
Longoria said a quarter of food eaten
in the United States is harvested by children. The documentary says that more than
400,000 children work in U.S. farm fields.
“You have to be aware of the practices that
are used to get the food we are eating,” said
the actress, who as executive producer of “The
Harvest,” raised nearly $1 million for the film,
which will be released on DVD this month.
“I’ve been involved with farm workers
advocacy for a long time,” she said, “but I recently found out, I didn’t know there were so
many children working legally in the fields.”
“The Harvest” tells the story of three children who work as field laborers in Florida,
Michigan and Texas to help their parents.
In the film, one of them, 12-year-old
Zulema Lopez, notes that she started working at such a young age, she doesn’t even remember her first day. She adds that picking
onions in Texas from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., she
made $64 a week.
The child field workers work under an unforgiving sun and in paralyzing cold and run
the same risks and suffer the same deprivations as adult laborers, the film shows. Lopez,
for example, recounts how she had to throw
dirt on a wound to stop it from bleeding. The
film also explains how migratory work makes
it difficult for children to receive a proper
education.
The film has been shown to members of
Congress to put a face on a bill sponsored
by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, D-Calif., that
would raise the minimum age for field work
in the U.S. from 12 to 14 years. It also seeks to
create penalties for labor infractions against
young field workers and reduce their exposure to pesticides.
“We want to use the film to change policy,”
Longoria said. “Children shouldn’t have to
choose between school and work.”

in the advisory board of the White House
regarding Hispanic education will be to promote new programs for preschool education
for Latinos.
In her first day as a member of the commission, Shakira stressed the importance of
educating children six years and younger, a
“crucial period to guarantee a successful life
as adults.”
“There is no better or quicker investment
than the one that affects the education of our
children when they are young”, said the artist.
Many of the Hispanic children who decide
not to continue with secondary education, or
that don’t attend college, do so mainly “because they didn’t have access to a good preschool education program”, she said.
In her speech before the commission,
Shakira was “delighted” to share the lessons
learned from 15 years since the creation of
her “Pies Descalzos” foundation, which provides education and food to children of poor
areas in Colombia and Haiti, among other
countries.
“Mi greatest challenge in this commission
is to share the experience I’ve had working
with children living in extreme poverty,” said
the singer.
When asked why she wants to get involved
in the education in the United States, the Colombian singer said that she “cares” about the
North American country. “In my own way,
I have also lived my own American dream,”
said the winner of seven Grammy Latino
awards, who has a home in Miami (Florida).
The singer, who also collaborates with the
ALAS foundation in Brazil and is a goodwill
ambassador for UNICEF since 2003, has

(EFE) — With 70 years which he just celebrated, 43 of which he has spent on the stage,
he has never failed that agreement, which is
why his concerts usually last for hours and
hours, while the charro sings — about love
and heartbreak, nostalgia, jealousy — with
his powerful throat, and gives away smiles to
the first rows.
The tactic has not failed him even in those
days when his career was just starting to take
off, nor in the top of his throne, where “Don
Vicente” is still admired and respected by colleagues and spectators.
The so-called “Charro de Huentitán”
keeps intact the desire to continue singing,
as he said some time ago: “I haven’t thought
about retirement because I was born for this;
in fact, I should be the one paying to sing because it’s a vice for me, especially when the
public has supported me for so long.”

Humble beginnings
Although he now treasures sales of more
than 42 million copies with 77 albums,
Fernández is of humble origins. He was born
on February 17, 1940 in Huentitán el Alto, in
the Mexican state of Jalisco.
He had to abandon elementary school to
work and bring money home; later he would
work as a farmer, boot cleaner, mason, dish
washer, painter and keeper of horses.
His interest in music took him to the country’s capital, Mexico City, where he received his
first pay for singing in 1960, 35 pesos (about
three dollars today). It was for his participation in the program La Calandria Musical.
Three years later, Fernández said “I Do” to
“Doña Cuquita,” as his wife, Maria del Refugio Abarca, is known.
His first album, “La Voz Que Usted Esperaba,” would come in 1968. Since then, he
has added to his repertoire songs like “Volver,
Volver,” “Las Llaves De Mi Alma,” “Por Tu
Maldito Amor,” “Aprendiste A Volar,” and
“Lástima Que Seas Ajena,” which have become classics.
Fernández also made his incursion in the
film industry: he filmed his first movie, “Tacos Al Carbon” in 1971. For twenty years he
participated in around thirty movies, the last
one being “Mi Querido Viejo,” in 1991.
His retirement from movies and soap operas, where he has also appeared, is final, said
the maestro.
In “Mi Querido Viejo” he shared credits
with his son, Alejandro, who is also a musical idol in Mexico, at times of ranchero music and at times of pop music, and one of the
most desired men in the country.
Father and son toured together in the
United States and Latin America in 2002,
culminating in a tremendous way the following year at the Foro del Sol in Mexico City before an audience of about 55,000 people.
In 2003, the veteran singer was diagnosed
with prostate cancer, but he was able to beat
the disease a year later.
He has two other sons, Gerardo and Vicente, and a daughter, Alejandra. Vicente Jr.,
who has been singing for some years, was
kidnapped in 1997, and his captors cut two of
his fingers to press for ransom.
For years, it was believed that Vicente was
the father of Rodrigo Fernández, the result of
a ten-year romance with Mexican actress Patricia Rivera, until the boy underwent DNA
testing which proved negative.

Con su último disco bajo el brazo,
“Necesito de ti”, Fernández hace de
nuevo las maletas para irse este año
de gira por Estados Unidos, España,
Italia, Francia, Holanda, Inglaterra,
Alemania y Portugal, por ahora.
El cantante recibió este año el Grammy al Mejor Álbum Regional mexicano, por su último trabajo, “Necesito
de ti”. Lo ha dicho alto y claro, y lo
mantiene: “El día que yo crea que lo
logré todo, ese día me retiro al rancho,
pero todavía tengo mucho por hacer”.
Aunque ahora atesora ventas por
más de 42 millones de copias de los 77
discos que ha lanzado, Fernández es de
humilde cuna. Pero la inquietud por la
música le llevó a viajar a la capital del
país, Ciudad de México, donde recibiría en 1960 su primer sueldo por cantar, unos 35 pesos (equivalentes a unos
tres dólares de hoy).

The artist, who has a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame, has the respect not only
from the public, but also from his professional colleagues. Some years ago, he was mentor
to pop singer Christian Castro, who wanted
to try something different in his career and
give his music a traditional twist.
Fernández was Castro’s guide teaching
him not only to sing ranchero songs powerfully, but also to dress and act like a charro.
He recently met with many familiar faces
— Thalia, Luis Miguel, Juanes, among oth-
ers — to record “Somos El Mundo,” the Latino version of “We Are The World,” recorded
in Miami under the lead of Emilio Estefan to
benefit the victims in Haiti.
He lives in his natal state, Jalisco; in Zapopan, located in the metropolitan area of Guadalajara, one of the most conservative cities
in the country.
His great and enormous ranch is called
“Tres Potrillos,” in honor of his three sons; beside it is the Vicente Fernandez Arena, with
capacity for 40,000 people where all kinds
of musical, theater and sporting events take
place.
This year, the singer received a Grammy
for Best Mexican Regional Album, for his
latest work, “Necesito De Tí.” He has said it
loud and clear, and he maintains it: “The day
I believe I have achieved it all, that day I will
retire to my ranch, but I still have a lot to do.”

Mexican comedian “Capulina” passed away
MEXICO (AP) — Mexican comedian Gaspar
Henaine Pérez “Capulina”, whose career included numerous humor movies and multiple
television programs over six decades, passed
away Friday, September 30. He was 85.
The spokesman for the Asociación Nacional de Actores, Gustavo de Anda, said that the
actor died in a hospital in Mexico City where
he had been for several days. De Anda added
that he did not know the cause of death.
Henaine had been hospitalized for pneumonia and suffered complications for a gastric ulcer. His family had started a campaign
to find blood donors because of the transfusions he underwent.
Capulina participated in almost 100 movies and excelled in Mexican entertainment
due to his humoristic ability, never resorting
to profanity in his jokes, which earned him
the nickname of “The King of White Humor.”
The Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y
las Artes expressed sorrow in its Twitter account for the actor’s death.
De Anda said that the wake for the actor
would take place from Friday night in a funeral home in Mexico City.
Henaine was born in Chignahuapan,
Puebla, January 6, 1926, the son of Lebanese
immigrants. After trying his luck as a singer
as a teenager, in the groups Los Excéntricos
del Ritmo and trio Los Trincas, in the early
1950s he met Marco Antonio Campos Contreras, known as “Viruta,” with whom he began a prolific career on the radio.
Together they formed a comedy duo that
reminded of Laurel and Hardy, for their humor
and both their looks. The duo had great success
in movies with more than twenty films.
After a professional breakup with Campos
Contreras, Henaine started to work alone,
making comedy movies mostly for children.
He was known by his hat, which was
missing the top and showed the crown of his
head. Henaine shared the stage with Roberto
Gómez Bolaños “Chespirito” and acted along
Mexican wrestling icon “El Santo” in “El Santo Vs. Capulina.”
Capulina also became a TV star with several shows among which is “El Gran Circo de
Capulina,” which aired during the decade of
1970 and would make him a pioneer, touring in a circus named after him. “El Circo De
Capulina” toured for the last time in 2001
and in it he shared the stage with his son,
Antonio.

with “Las Aventuras De Capulina,” a popular
weekly comic, which also began publication

In 2009 Capulina was honored with a
statue revealed in his natal Chignahuapan.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Elena, his
daughter Maria Elena and his son Antonio.

Henaine Pérez “Capulina’’, cuya

Rosemont to debut
new haunted house

Want to know how it feels to be in the
home of a real-life serial killer?
Then Rosemont’s new haunted house is
the place to be this fall.
A ghoulish castle with a giant skull atop
the entrance and two skeletons on each
side of the doorway will greet visitors to the
12,000-square-foot tented haunted house
that brings to life the story of Dr. Henry Howard Holmes.
Holmes — actual name Herman Webster
Mudgett — was one of America’s first documented serial killers who notoriously lured
women from the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair
and murdered them at his Englewood hotel.
Holmes was made famous by the nonfiction book “The devil in the White City” by
Erik Larson. The Internet Movie Database
says a film version with Leonardo DiCaprio is
in development for a 2013 release.
“He basically would lure women from
the Colombian Exposition and offer them a
place to stay … all the rooms were designed
for murder,” said Mark Kaschube, head designer of Rosemont’s new haunted house that
opened Oct. 1.
Modeled after Holmes’ “murder castle,”
the haunted house features chutes, secret
passageways and torture chambers, and creates an atmosphere that is meant to heighten
peoples’ basic fears. It includes a live cast,
and “Holmes” himself might make an appearance.
“This guy was dropping people alive into
baths of acid and selling (the bodies) to medical schools,” Kaschube said. “He would skin
people alive. He was selling organs. We are
hoping to bring a lot of that to life, and for
people to experience what it might have been
like to be in H.H. Holmes’ house.”
Dubbed Screams In The Park at Rosemont, it’s the latest attraction in the village’s
new $30 million restaurant and entertainment district under construction on villageowned property south of Muvico Theater,
north of Balmoral Avenue, and east of the
Tri-State Tollway.
The freakish venue will remain open
through Halloween, Oct. 31. There is no age
restriction though parental discretion should
be used for children under 12 years old,
Kaschube said.

“I’ve been in the Halloween business for
over 25 years,” he said. “When we design
haunted houses, I think one of the most important things is that there’s a theme. You just
can’t have a body in a bathtub for no reason.
Without giving anything away, we use a very
simple formula. We take peoples’ basic fears
and maximize their potential.”

It’s the first time Rosemont has put on a
haunted house.
“The mayor, he’s a kid at heart and he has
always wanted to bring a haunted house to
his city,” said Kaschube, a Lemont dentist
who has known Rosemont Mayor Bradley
Stephens for years. “Both of us have the same
vision of bringing something over the top.
This is the trial run. We haven’t even opened,
but there’s great enthusiasm out there.”
Kaschube said the haunted house will be
integrated into the village’s restaurant and
entertainment district next year as well.
One of the district’s key draws will be an
outdoor plaza where the village will offer yearround events, including an ice-skating rink
opening this winter, a farmers market, concerts, fairs, festivals and exhibition sports.
“This haunted house is definitely going to
be on the map rather quickly,” Kaschube said.

Medias Blancas con un nuevo líder
El Mánager Robin Ventura no se arredra por su falta de experiencia
CHICAGO — (AP) El currículum de Robin
Ventura carece de líneas que citen experiencia como mánager. Pero eso fue lo de menos
para el gerente de los Medias Blancas Ken
Williams. ¿Por qué?
Williams tomó en cuenta las dotes de líder
y la inteligencia que Ventura exhibió durante
sus 16 temporadas como jugador en las Grandes Ligas, 10 con los Medias Blancas. Virtudes
que Williams consideró al ofrecerle el puesto.
Ventura, quien fue presentado como el
39no mánager en la historia de la franquicia,
firmó un contrato por tres años.
“Esta contratación no tienen nada de diferente a la de Ozzie Guillén, en la que él tampoco tenía experiencia como mánager. Esto
es lo adecuado para nosotros”, dijo Williams.
Ventura reemplaza a Guillén, su ex compañero que ahora dirige a los Marlins.
Guillén fue coach en Montreal y Florida
antes de asumir como piloto de los Medias
Blancas, luego que los Marlins ganaron la Serie Mundial en 2003.
Dos años después, llevó a los Medias Blancas a su primer campeonato de Serie Mundial
desde 1917.
Ventura, de 44 años, había trabajado en la
TV y recién en junio pasado fue contratado
como asesor del director de personal de los
Medias Blancas, Buddy Bell. Reconoció que
se sorprendió y hasta se mostró aprensivo
cuando Williams le propuso el puesto.
Decidió que era el paso correcto, especialmente en el equipo donde emprendió su carrera, en la que se destacó por su bateo oportuno, buena defensa en la antesala (6 Guantes
de Oro) y poder desde el lazo izquierdo (294
jonrones, 18 de grand slam). “Es cierto que no
tengo experiencia como mánager, pero creo
que al final de mi carrera demostré que tenía
la capacidad de poder hacer esto”, dijo.
Chicago viene de una decepcionante campaña con marca de 79-83.
Los cambios de post temporada no fueron
un factor en la decisión de Ventura, y dijo que
no considera que el equipo se encuentre en
una etapa de reconstrucción.

Uno de los principales retos de Ventura
será revitalizar las carreras de Adam Dunn y

manager of the White Sox, got a threeyear contract.

Williams said.
Ventura replaces Guillen, his former
teammate and friend, who was released
from the final year of his contract and is
now managing the Marlins. Guillen was
a major league coach in Montreal and
Florida before getting the White Sox job
after the Marlins won the World Series
in 2003. Two years later, he guided the
White Sox to their first World Series
title since 1917. His relationship with
Williams became fractured over the last
two seasons.
The 44-year-old Ventura dabbled in
TV work and was just hired in June as
an adviser to White Sox player personnel director Buddy Bell.
The White Sox are coming off one of
their most disappointing seasons with a
79-83 record after they were expected to
be a contender with a $127 million payroll. Offseason moves were not a major
factor in Ventura’s decision, and he said
he doesn’t consider the team to be in a
rebuilding stage.

Las firmas financieras se lanzan a la
caza de los hispanos

os hispanos son el grupo demográfico de más rápido crecimiento en Estados Unidos. También son los menos
inclinados a invertir o a tener cuentas 401(k)
u otras formas de ahorro de jubilación, según
recientes informes.
Varias compañías de servicios financieros
se han propuesto cambiar esta tendencia y
están haciendo un mayor esfuerzo por atraer
a trabajadores hispanos.
Pero convencer a este grupo que invierta y
ponga dinero en cuentas de jubilación podría
ser complicado, dicen algunos académicos
y expertos en retiro. No solo muchos trabajan en industrias con bajos salarios, sino que
la idea de acumular fondos para la vejez no
siempre condice con una cultura en la cual
se cuidan entre sí.
“El retiro es un concepto ajeno para muchos trabajadores hispanos”, dice Elli Dai,
director de servicios de Wells Fargo Institutional Retirement and Trust, filial de Wells
Fargo & Co. “El énfasis está en cuidar de la
familia extendida con la esperanza de que
algún miembro cuide de ellos cuando ya no
puedan trabajar”.
En 2010, había 50,5 millones de hispanos
viviendo en EE.UU. Solo 10% de ellos tiene
cuentas de retiro individuales (IRA) o similares, y 24% tiene cuentas 401(k) o de ahorro, según un informe difundido a finales de
julio por el Pew Hispanic Center, un centro
de investigación independiente. En comparación, 35% de los blancos tiene cuentas
IRA o similares, y 45% tiene cuentas 401(k)
o de ahorro.
Según estudios, la falta de acceso es una
parte importante del problema: ya sea debido a su condición migratoria o a la clase
de trabajos que tienen, los hispanos están
entre los grupos con menos probabilidades
de tener acceso a un plan de retiro.

Los hispanos tenían 50% más de probabilidades que los blancos de retirar dinero de sus
cuentas por emergencias en el mismo año,
concluyó el estudio.
Incluso en el segmento de ingresos más
altos en la encuesta de Ariel/Hewitt —un
salario de $120,000 o más— los hispanos
habían ahorrado la menor cantidad para la
jubilación: un promedio de $150,000, comparado con $155,000 para los afroamericanos,
$161,000 para los blancos y $223,000 para
los asiáticos.
“Para muchos, (planear para el retiro) es
algo completamente nuevo”, dice Arnoldo
Mata, director de investigación del Hispanic Institute, una entidad sin fines de lucro
de Washington.
La firma de corretaje Edward Jones está
entre las compañías que tratan de cambiar
esa dinámica. Además de reclutar más personal latino, la firma patrocina conferencias
de grupos como la National Society of Hispanic MBAs y la Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting, en un
intento por destacar su filosofía de inversión
y atraer nuevos clientes.
Por su parte, ING Groep NV ha reescrito
el material específicamente para ahorradores hispanos en vez de simplemente traducir
documentos al español. También ha dictado
seminarios a dueños de pequeños negocios
en mercados con población hispana considerable para explicarles las ventajas de reclutamiento y retención cuando ofrecen a sus
empleados planes de jubilación. ING también
aumentó la cantidad de representantes bilingües de servicio al cliente tras descubrir que
los usuarios hispanos tienden a pasar más
tiempo en el teléfono que otros grupos.
Este enfoque ha sido exitoso, dice X. Rick
Niu, jefe de marketing de la división de jubilación de ING. En un empleador, que no
identificó, la participación en cuentas 401(k)
entre empleados hispanos subió de 27% a
61%, dice.
Aun así, algunos académicos dicen que
concentrarse en los planes 401(k) para mayor seguridad en el retiro no funciona, lo cual
está reflejado en las grandes sumas que retiran los hispanos mucho antes de jubilarse.
Karen Richman, antropóloga de la Universidad de Notre Dame, sugiere que los bancos

the least likely group to have access to
a retirement plan. But even when they
do have retirement accounts, Hispanic savers are among the most likely
to take out loans or hardship withdrawals, incurring taxes and additional penalties that eat into their savings,
studies show.
Some experts say a better option
would be for employers and banks to
impose stricter limits on when employees can withdraw money from their
employer-sponsored retirement accounts. Others suggest a concept called
a “tanda” account, in which informal
groups of people contribute to a pool
of money, and each takes a turn withdrawing funds at an assigned time.
Second Federal Savings, a community bank that serves the large Latino
population on the southwest side of
Chicago, considered formalizing tanda accounts as a retirement option, but
shelved the idea during the economic
crisis. Still, Mark Doyle, the bank’s senior vice president for community development, says tandas could present
a viable way for banks to encourage Latinos to save for retirement.

países con culturas tan diferentes, como Israel e Irán, por ejemplo, estar interesados en
mis libros? Cuando comencé a usar los medios de comunicación social, sin ningún tipo
de ayuda o planificación, fueron dos cosas las
que me guiaron: la curiosidad de saber quién
lee mi trabajo y el desafío de escribir desde
una plataforma diferente.
Mi participacion en redes sociales ha sido
instintiva. Pero, para mi sorpresa, hace poco,
al iniciar una sesión en Facebook, me di cuenta de que tenía más seguidores que Madonna.
En el momento en que escribo estas líneas,
la cantante que admiro y respeto tiene seis
millones de “Me gusta”, mientras que yo estoy cerca de los 6,5 millones. ¿Cómo puede
un escritor —relativamente desconocido en
Estados Unidos— llegar a tanta gente? Hice
una pequeña lista en relación con ello.
A. En el principio existía la tradición
oral. La gente se contaba historias, reía y
lloraba junto con el autor, hasta el siglo XV,
cuando se inventó la imprenta. Las ideas
comenzaron a viajar mucho más lejos y a
una velocidad mucho mayor, y el autor de
esas ideas se convirtió en un personaje abstracto.
B. Nace la torre de marfil de la literatura. Interferir en la vida humana sin haber visto jamás sus caras es un atributo de los dioses, y la mayoría de los escritores comenzó a
pensar que encajaba en esa categoría. Conscientes de que podían ejercer su influencia
sin ser vistos, alimentaron el mito de la sabiduría que estaba por encima de los mortales,
en algunos casos debido a la timidez, o a la
arrogancia, o simplemente porque creían que
ya no reflejaban su propio trabajo. Al mismo
tiempo, los lectores estimularon esta relación distante: la palabra impresa se convirtió
en “la verdad”, la perspectiva final.
C. Internet destruye la torre. A finales del
siglo XX tuvo lugar una ruptura radical. De re-

pente, el autor y el lector podían
otra vez estar en contacto, en
tiempo real.
Y yo pensé: ¿por qué no
aprovechar la oportunidad?
Comencé con un blog y luego
me concentré en dos redes sociales, Facebook y Twitter (que
recién había sido lanzada. Yo
vengo twitteando desde 2007).
Podía hablar con la gente que,
por la naturaleza de haber leído
mis libros, entendía mi alma.
D. El lenguaje cambia. Por
supuesto, podría usar estas redes sociales solamente para promocionar mis libros, ¿pero con qué fin? El
arte de escribir, no se limita a la impresión de
libros, sino al acto de comunicar un mensaje.
Una voz interior me dijo: “no seas prepotente. Lo que uno y cualquier otro escritor quiere
es ser leído por el mayor número de personas
posible. Así que utiliza este lenguaje y consíguelo”. He creado lo que llamo “lectura en 20
segundos”, adaptando historias y reflexiones
para el período de tiempo más largo que una
persona dedicará en un sitio web.
E. El lector ya no es pasivo, sino activo. Al
descubrir quiénes eran mis lectores, también
comprendí que teníamos muchos intereses en
común. He creado varios temas de discusión
en mi blog, que van desde
el matrimonio a la piratería
en Internet. También abrí
una página para que puedan intercambiar comentarios sobre mis libros entre ellos, sin ningún tipo
de censura.
F. El lector es ahora un compañero, un
acompañante de viaje.
Es tu compañía lo que
ellos quieren, no la de
uno de tus colaboradores, y los lectores pueden identificar, casi de inmediato,
quién es el que está del otro lado de la página web, porque ya han leído tus libros y
conoce tu alma.
En la actualidad, dedico tres horas de mi
día a esta interacción. Aunque la mayor parte
de mis actividades que tienen que ver con mi
carrera literaria es delegada a gente que pertenece a mi entorno, como mi agente, mi editor y los vendedores de libros, tengo el tiempo y el placer para este contacto directo.
Y cuando te gusta lo que haces, las cosas
siempre funcionan.

To my surprise, when I recently logged on to Facebook, I noticed I had more
followers than Madonna.
How can a writer — relatively unknown in the USA — reach so many
people?
A. Ideas began to travel much farther and at much greater speeds, and
the author of those ideas became an
abstract character.
B. It is an attribute of the gods to
interfere with the human life without
ever showing their faces, and the majority of writers began to think they fit
this category while readers encouraged
this distant relationship and then the
printed word became the “truth.”
C. By the end of the 20th century suddenly, the author and the writer could
be in touch with each other again — in
real time. And I thought: Why not seize
the opportunity? I started with a blog,
and then focused on two social communities: Facebook and Twitter (which
had just started — I have been tweeting
since 2007).
D. An inner voice told me: “Don’t be
pushy. What you and any writer wants
is to be read by the largest number of
people possible.” I created what I call
“reading in 20 seconds,” adapting stories and reflections to the longest time
period a person will spend on a Web
page.
E. As I discovered who my readers
were, I also understood that we had
many interests in common. I created
several discussion topics on my blog,
ranging from marriage to Internet piracy. I also opened a page for them
to be able to comment on my books
among themselves, without any kind
of censorship.
F. The reader is now also a companion, a fellow traveler. It is your company they want, not that of a member
of your team, and readers can discern,
almost immediately, who is on the other
side of the page — because as they’ve
read your books, they’ve learned a lot
about your soul.
And when you like what you do,
things always work out.
