DANCE: Weaving life with movement
World Dance Alliance/Americas Dance Event
August 11– August 14, 2011
Guatemala
Hosted by
in affiliation with
World Dance Alliance-Americas
Centro de Danza e Investigación del Movimiento,
Universidad Rafael Landívar, Guatemala, Central America.
The Event will take place in two locations. It will begin at Centro de Formación de la
Cooperación Española in La Antigua Guatemala and it will proceed to the main campus
of Universidad Rafael Landívar in Guatemala City. This activity will coincide with the XIV
Festival del Centro Histórico (Historical Center Festival) and the presentation of
Traditional Dances in the province of Sololá.
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
From August 11 – 14, 2011, the World Dance Alliance/Americas (WDA) in affiliation with the
Centro de Danza e Investigación del Movimiento of Universidad Rafael Landívar in Guatemala
will host a World Dance Alliance/Americas Dance Event with the theme DANCE: Weaving life
with movement. During the event the Executive Board Meeting WDA/Americas will be held as
well.
The theme DANCE: Weaving life with movement encourages a broad participation and
exchange between dance professionals and other related professionals who work in building
human, harmonic and creative societies through movement and dance. The theme also seeks to
stimulate reflection around dance as a personal and communal experience that carries within
itself the joy of discovering life through movement.
To this end, the General Dance Event invites proposals for scholarly papers, panels, master
classes, forum and performances that address issues related to the general theme divided as
follow:
1. Community Dance:
This theme includes research and/or field experience with dance in community and its
benefits to diverse groups and societies. From this perspective, this section also includes
research and experiences with traditional dances.
2. Teaching the teachers:
a) This theme includes research and/or practical experience related to content and
practice in teaching dancers and teacher training programs for those who teach
dance students and dancers, from beginners to professional level.
2
b) It also includes research and/or practical experience with dance in the K – 12
Curriculum at school settings. In addition, research and/or practical experience
related to dance in education with different populations will be considered.
3. The status of the artist
This theme asks participants to look at policy, legislation, organizations, networking,
experiences in struggle and success, improvements in the conditions of the artists and
the development of the arts in different countries of North, Central and South America.
While the Event certainly welcomes proposals which address issues of the theme DANCE:
Weaving life with movement, paper, panel, class, forum and performance proposals need not be
limited to or by the Event’s theme, which should be considered as a catalyst for discussion rather
than a restraint.

After studying at the MUDRA dance school and the Tisch School of
the Arts in New York, in 1980 Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker created
Asch, her first choreographic work. 1982 saw the premiere of Fase,
four movements to the music of Steve Reich, one of the most influential
pieces of choreography of the era. In 1983 De Keersmaeker set up her
Rosas company at the same time as creating the work Rosas danst
Rosas. The focus of her work is the relationship between dance and
music. She has used the music of composers from several periods.
While Rosas was resident at La Monnaie (1992-2007), De
Keersmaeker directed a number of operas. The relationship between
dance and words is another thread running through her work. Her
recent productions have been characterised by cooperation with
artists. In 1995 she established the P.A.R.T.S. dance school in
association with La Monnaie.

by ANNE TERESA DE KEERSMAEKER
I think dance celebrates what makes us human.
When we dance we use, in a very natural way, the mechanics of our body
and all our senses to express joy, sadness, the things we care about.
People have always danced to celebrate the crucial moments of life and our
bodies carry the memory of all the possible human experiences.
We can dance alone and we can dance together. We can share what makes
us the same, what makes us different from each other.
For me dancing is a way of thinking. Through dance we can embody the
most abstract ideas and thus reveal what we cannot see, what we cannot
name.
Dance is a link between people, connecting heaven and earth.
We carry the world in our bodies.
I think that ultimately each dance is part of a larger whole, a dance that has
no beginning, and no end.

International Dance Day
Backgrou nd
In 1982 the International Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute
(ITI/UNESCO) founded International Dance Day to be celebrated every year on
the 29th of April.
The date commemorates the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, who was born in
1727 and was a great reformer of dance. Every year a message from a well-known
dance personality is circulated throughout the world. The intention of
International Dance Day and the Message is to bring all dance together on this
day, to celebrate this art form and revel in its universality, to cross all political,
cultural and ethnic barriers and bring people together in peace and friendship with
a common language - Dance.
In 1995, in an effort to unite dance, the International Dance Committee entered
into a collaborative effort for the celebration of International Dance Day with
World Dance Alliance as their only official partner.
WDA Europe in collaboration with PAC Proietti Art Creations, since in 2007, are
sponsors and creators of the message.
MESSAGE DE LA JOURNÉE INTERNATIONALE DE LA DANSE
Historique
