It is within the family that lives its faith that

The New Saint Junipero
Serra and the California
Missions
Come learn about the newest saint in our Church,
the “Apostle of California”, who brought the Christian
faith and the very first Bible into our state. Learn
about his life as a Franciscan Missionary and
founder of the first nine Churches in California. Learn
about the history and legacy of the 21 original
California Missions and their role in the spiritual life
of our Church today, with special respect and honor
to the Native American of California to whom he
dedicated his live in loving service.
REVEREND GREGORY BEAUMONT
AND MR. DAVID BEAUMONT
Mr. David Beaumont has been

the director of the tour guide
association at Old Mission San
Fernando for over 10 years,

establishment and history of
the California Missions and

Wisdom at Play in Creation
B.05
The Family is Ground Zero
for Mission
This workshop will explore the Wisdom
Christology of Thomas Merton (19151968), whose hundredth anniversary of birth is
celebrated this year. Special attention will be given
to the beautiful prose poem Hagia Sophia which
draws on the Wisdom tradition of the Old Testament
books of Proverbs, Sirach, and Wisdom as well as
the New Testament writings of John and Paul. The
influence of Russian Orthodox theologians on
Merton's understanding of Christ will be highlighted.
Participants will be refreshed at the well of Merton's
vision of Christ as Incarnate Wisdom.
Pope Francis describes the family as “the
privileged place for transmitting the faith” and
therefore is ground zero for mission. It is where the
seeds of God’s love are first planted and nurtured.
However Jesus challenges us to take that love, cross
boundaries and share it in ever-widening communities
of missionary disciples. Using the example of the Holy
Family, participants will reflect upon how to make the
family the hotbed for mission, including practical
suggestions on sharing the joy of the Gospel at home,
work, school, parish, neighborhood and beyond.
REVEREND STEPHEN COFFEY, OSB
DEACON GUSTAVO ESCRUCERIA
Father Stephen Coffey is a Benedictine
monk of the Monastery of the Risen Christ
in San Luis Obispo and an ordained
priest. He is a candidate for the Doctor of
Ministry degree in Christian Spirituality
from Virginia Theological Seminary and is
writing a thesis on Theological Reflection
for Spiritual Directors. His ministries

“It must be restated that nobody in the Church of
Jesus Christ should feel excused from receiving
catechesis. This is true even of young seminarians
and young religious, and of all those called to the
task of being pastors and catechists. They will fulfill
this task all the better if they are humble pupils of
the Church, the great giver as well as the great
receiver of catechesis” (Catechechi Tradendae—On

Evangelization and Catechesis in a
Bilingual and Multi-Cultural Context:
Challenges and Opportunities
Pope Francis’ vision of evangelization gives us a deeper insight into
pastoral life and in particular the catechetical process. His papal
exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, presents the Church with a
renewed emphasis on content shaped by our social contexts and a
pedagogy of “encuentro.” This talk will look at how we can turn
around some of the challenges of faith formation ministry in multicultural and bilingual parishes into opportunities for greater parish
unity and more profound faith formation experiences for our
students and catechists

The Word of God:
Unpacking it Using the
Lectio Divina Approach
Pope Benedict XVI wrote in his Book titled The Word
of the Lord: We find ourselves before the mystery of
God, who has made himself known through the gift
of his word. This word, which abides forever, entered
into time. God spoke his eternal Word humanly: his
Word ‘became flesh’. This is the good news. In that
book, the Holy Father recommends using the “lectio

presentation we will learn and practice the “lectio
divina” method as a way to get a deeper
understanding of the Word of God.

Becoming Cultural Mystics:
A Theology of Popular
Culture
Sister Nancy introduces participants to a theological
understanding of the more profound human
experiences expressed in popular film, music and
social media. Her theological framework stems from
a Christian anthropology that seeks to address the
existential questions of humanity, draw them out of
the popular cultural experience and provide a
theological intellectual examination through a
sacramental imagination. This leads to a deeper
awareness of the presence of God at work in the
world and in common human experience.

But I Don’t Speak Spanish:
Six Strategies for Ministry
with Hispanic Youth
In the Central Valley, it is estimated that 75% of
Catholics are of Hispanic descent. This means that
most youth leaders who minister in the Diocese of
Fresno serve Hispanic youth, even those who minister
in English. As we consider ministerial approaches, it is
important to realize that there is not one Hispanic
reality but a diversity of realities for Hispanics. This
diversity includes the first generations from Latin and
Caribbean countries, second generation United States
-born Hispanics who are mostly bilingual and bicultural,
and third, fourth (and so on) U.S.-born generations of
Hispanics who are often more comfortable
communicating in English (or only speak English). To
serve within this diverse context, this workshop
proposes six strategies for youth ministry designed to
join the uniqueness of each generation with the
Christian narrative and the life of the faith community.

We are One Family in Faith
What do you think about the family in faith?
Jesus was speaking to the crowds (Matt 12). Then
someone told him that his mother and brothers had
arrived and wanted to speak with him. Jesus replied,
“Who is my mother? Who are my brothers? And he
continued, “Here are my mother and my brothers.”
Who are his mother and his brothers? We are his
mother, his brothers and sisters. How are we his
mother, his brothers and sisters? By doing God’s will,
we become one family.

WORKSHOP WILL BE GIVEN IN HMONG.
D.61
Nurturing the Hmong
Community
This workshop explores ideas for how the
Hmong Catholic community can grow.
CHENG HER
Before he died Jesus gave us new commandment.
“Love one another as I love you.” How can we love one
another as Jesus loves us? Jesus washed his disciple’s
feet and said, “I washed your feet, you ought to wash
one another’s feet.” (John 13, 14) This is a model of
action to love one another in our daily life as Jesus did.
Also, in contrast Paul talks to us of love in 1 Corinthians
13. “Love is patient, love is kind… love never fails…
faith, hope, love remains, these three; but the greatest
of these is love.” Love is open to others and to God.
When we love others we are open to newness of life
each day, we encounter others and God. We are not
satisfied with our own interpretation of life.
Cheng Her is a catechist for the Hmong
Catholic Community and is a convert from
Shamanism to Catholicism since 1988. In
2006 he finished the New Wine diocesan
program and was the coordinator for the
Hmong program on TV Channel 49 until
2014. Cheng is currently in his third year of
Diaconate formation program.

A.23

REVERENDO JON PEDIGO, STL

debería sentirse dispensado de recibir la catequesis;

a nosotros. Nuestra respuesta a esta pregunta tiene
ambas consecuencias para el mundo. Nosotros

¿Cierto o No Cierto?

B.81 Living as a Fulfilled Single
Person
The period before the “big commitment” of marriage
or consecrated life can be a scary and lonely time for
may young adults, but this time can also prove to be
very fruitful. It should be a time of preparation,
maturing and of deep encounter with God and
neighbor. The great fallacy is that another can fulfill
you.
MARY BIELSKI
Mary Bielski was born in Indianapolis into
an active Catholic family. Her younger
years were filled with activity and outward
success, but inside she struggled with her
relationship with God and life. After a
strong conversion her freshman year of
college, her life changed and she felt a
“total call” sweep into her life and heart;
she declared her second major at Marquette University in
Theology. Mary currently lives in South Bend, Indiana. In 2009,
Mary felt God’s call and took a leap of faith, leaving her job and
immersing herself full-time in ALL4HIM Ministries.
Her prayer is that you will encounter the tender love of the Lord
and be set free to live All for Him.
C.81 And It was Good
Justin will explore Scripture on the story of Creation;
the beauty and mystery of male and female. What is
complementarily between men and women as well as
the mystery behind our sexuality. God saw what He
had made and it was good. “We believe that in the
Sacrament of Marriage, God has given us the gift of
experiencing His covenant. In the marriage covenant,
husband and wife live together in light of the covenant
already established by God and Israel…” (Taken from:
Love is our Mission: A preparatory Catechesis for the World
Meeting of Families Philadelphia 2015.)

D.81 Balance
Many times we become busybodies in the Vineyard
of the Lord and burn out. We do the work of God, but
somehow it feels God is not working in us. This
conference will illustrate the danger of speaking a lot
about God and little to Him; as well as give practical
ways on how to live a Christ-centered life rooted in a
life of prayer. “Prayer is work and work is prayer”.
I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever
remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit,
because without me you can do nothing. John 15:5

Welcome:
Diocese of
Fresno
Young
People!
Get ready, to be swept away by the enthusiasm, energy, spirituality and relevant
content at Youth Day and our Young Adult Congress Track 2015! Aside from a great
band, two national speakers, awesome local speakers, our Bishop and Jesus in the
Eucharist, there is an opportunity for connecting with other young people from our
Diocese at large!
During our 2015 Youth Day, we will take a closer look at how all Catholic teaching
about sexuality, marriage and the family flows from Jesus’ teaching on how to be
happy. It’ll be as if we’re taking a condensed “snapchat”, starting with creation and
smoothly make our way to the present time! There is a direct intentionality about the
way we are designed and by loving God’s plan for us, we will be able to live and fulfill
our mission of love here on earth!
Come and be part of the big things happening in our Diocese! It might even change
your life! #dofyd2015 #fresnoyoungcatholics

ARMEE YOUNG MINISTRIES
ARMEE Ministries originated in December 2008 by a
group of NET Ministries Alumni in Turlock, California.
What started out as a strong desire to come together
for corporate prayer through Praise and Worship,
turned into a full blown worship ministry. Every
Monday evening, people of all ages from all over the
Central Valley gather for fellowship, spiritual
nourishment, worship and Adoration. ARMEE has
since then ventured into other
projects such as leading music at faith
events and retreats, recording an
album, and even opening for Catholic
recording artist Matt Maher. ARMEE’s
mission is simple: Deepening people’s
love for Christ through fellowship,
spiritual nourishment, and worship, in
Adoration and Reconciliation, while
enriching their love of the Mass and
the Eucharist, and inspiring them to
greater Evangelization.

D
411 on Dating
We are surrounded by noise all day long…our
phones, our music, friends, homework, and
so many other influences around us. When do we
make time for God? We join ARMEE Ministries, who
show us how to make time for prayer and use social
media to find God and make Him known!
Dating in today’s world can be a challenge.
How do we engage in respectful, loving
relationships as Christian young people? We come
together to learn how to value ourselves and those with
whom we are in relationship.
