Who Are Emerging Leaders and Mentors?
The Church calls us to submerge, before we emerge. Emerging Catholic Leaders
are those who, having been plunged into the mystery of Jesus, are rising up and answering the call to be leaders in faith, worship and witness. They are living out their
baptismal call to holiness and inviting others to do the same as they seek to serve in a
public church ministry with the authorization of the hierarchy of the Church.
Emerging Catholic Leaders lead in a world that “stands in great need of witnesses, not so much of teachers but rather of witnesses. It’s not so much about speaking,
but rather speaking with our whole lives: consistency means living Christianity as an
encounter with Jesus that brings me to others.”
The MAC considers those who are in the process of being formed in ministry for
less than three years to be Emerging Catholic Leaders. As they embrace the Church’s
mission and serve as agents of the New Evangelization in a new Pentecost, in their
commitments to Christ and inspire others to do the same as they fuse ancient tradition with new methods of evangelization.
Our Emerging Catholic Leaders will not flourish without the guidance of a skilled
mentor. This is someone who is willing to say “imitate me as I imitate Christ.” Those
called to our mentor program are disciples as well as teachers who embark on spiritual accompaniment of new leaders in the Church. These mentors will companion new
leaders in their dioceses sharing their wisdom and experiences.
No hablar tanto, sino
imito a Cristo.”

cultural. Además es poeta y escritor. Su primer libro

Boot Camps
Thursday, February 4, 9:00 a.m.–11:45 a.m.
Called to be a Parish Catechetical Leader…Where
do I start!
provide both promise and peril in the practice of evangelization today.
You have been called to be a parish a catechetical leader.
What does that mean? Evangelization consists of three
moments: proclamation of the Gospel, initiation into the
life of the Church and the ongoing maturing of the faith.
How do we make sure it is not lost within the complexity of managing the many components of pastoral outreach or catechetical programming? This boot camp session is divided into four segments; Parish Catechetical
Leader as a person of Faith, Administrator, Community
Builder and Professional Catechist. We will explore the
gifts and challenges of each area and share practical best
practices.
Presenter: Thomas Ryan, Director, Loyola Institute for Ministry
Presenter: Mickie Abatemarco, Assistant Director of Professional
Development, National Catholic Educational Association
National Certification Standards Addressed: 2.6, 2.7, 4.1, 4.3
Co-Heirs, Co-Responsible, Co-Workers in the
Vineyard
This boot camp will focus on an emerging theology and
practice of lay ministry and lay ecclesial ministry for
the Church rooted in Baptism (co-heirs), our sharing as
laity in the mission of Jesus and the Church (co-responsible—quoting Benedict XVI), and the call to ministry
(co-workers).
Presenters: Jerry Tortorella and Mark Hoggard
Sponsored by the National Association for Lay Ministry
National Certification Standards Addressed: 1.3, 2.5, 3.6, 4.5
Digital Media and Spirituality
This multi-media and interactive bootcamp focuses on
the Church’s tradition of social communication and
its implications for the life of faith and ministry today.
Foundational for our faith is God’s act of communication through the medium of the Incarnation, in which
God’s very Word became human at a particular time
and place. Ever since, Christians have had the challenge of imitating God in proclaiming and animating
the Word through new media for new situations. This
presentation will explore the Church’s reflection on
media and communication from the time of the Bible
through Pope Francis, and it will do so to discern their
significance in our own context in which digital media

The Gospel of the Family
The church is the only institution in our society that
has the family as its primary focus. This boot camp
will explore how church representatives (lay ministers,
clergy, staff) can more effectively bring a family perspective to the diverse families we serve.

Liturgical Music 101 for the Non-Musician
The tradition of music and the liturgy in the Church
through the ages has brought us from mere vocal utterings to the organization of notes and rests on a page,
chant, harmony, great settings of the Mass Ordinary,
and songs, hymns, psalms and canticles in every musical style. Gain an appreciation for the development
of music in history alongside the use of music in the
Church’s liturgy. Become more familiar with the language necessary to collaborate with musicians who
plan the liturgy. Discover resources that help acquaint
a non-musician with the work of the musician who
teaches, leads and creates music for the liturgy.
Presenter: Dr. Lynn Trapp

RCIA: Rediscovering the Richness of the Rite
Even after three decades of use, the richness of the Rite
of Christian Initiation of Adults needs to be more fully
appreciated. This session, meant for veteran RCIA directors as well as novice team members, will explore the
RCIA, the rich options it contains, and the clear guidelines for its celebration. We will examine current pastoral
practice in light of the vision of the Rite, the National Statutes on the Catechumenate (USCCB 1986), and the recent
CARA survey on parish practices in Christian initiation.
All of this will better equip us to journey with those who
wish to know Christ and his Church.

Young Adults, Smartphones, and Ministry, Oh My!
Insights, Opportunities, and Boundaries
Speaker: Fr. Steven Bell
In this age, the smartphone is ubiquitous among young adults
providing them (and us) with entertainment, information, and
keeping in touch. In this mega workshop, we will strive to
make the most of this growing trend by answering some salient
questions. What insights do ministers need to know in order
to provide a faith experience that is accessible and amenable
to the lives of young adults? What opportunities are present
as we adapt to this new paradigm of communication? What
boundaries need to be fortified in order to create an authentic
and communal faith experience that attends to the deep needs
of young adults?

Seven Signs of a Modern Disciple
Speaker: Jeff Cavins
We have all heard the word ‘disciple.’ Yet, what does this
mean? What exactly is the expectation? Being a disciple is
actually the call made to every Christian, including you. In
this fascinating talk, Jeff Cavins offers seven signs that indicate
whether someone is in fact living (or attempting to live) as a
disciple. Cavins takes us back 2,000 years and reveals what life
would have been like for a disciple of a rabbi--and shows how
Jesus took this very model and made it the model for those
who would choose to follow him. If you are looking to take
your spiritual walk to the next level, join Jeff Cavins for this
practical and insightful walk through the Jewish and Christian
pedagogy and practice of discipleship.

Keep The Fire Burning Without Burning Out
Speaker: ValLimar Jansen
“There is no way I can take care of my family on this one salary,
I’ll have to get another job.” “On this salary, I won’t be able to
retire until I’m 90 years old!” “I cannot stay healthy working
these hours.” “I cannot have meaningful, committed, personal
relationships with these hours.” “There’s no way I can maintain my faith, my spirituality and my prayer life working these
hours.” Ever hear someone make these statements? Perhaps
you have spoken these words. Know anyone who works for
the Church and is underemployed, underpaid, overworked or
just plain stressed out? ValLimar will present a retreat and a
catechism for the body, mind and soul. With her unique style
of song, story, proclamation and reflection, she will use proven

Crucifixion: How a Cruel Form of Capital
Punishment Became a Symbol of Abundant Life
Speaker: Rev. Donald Senior
Crucifixion was a cruel form of capital punishment meant to
discredit the cause of the one crucified. Early Christianity was
able to transform the meaning of the cross from an abject symbol of human suffering into a sign of abundant life. This presentation will sample examples in early Christian art and in
the New Testament that testify to this remarkable center of the

A Call to “A Church That Is Poor”: Re-imagining
Parish Life through Pope Francis
Speaker: Joan Rosenhauer
In his inaugural homily Pope Francis committed himself to
“embrace with tender affection the whole of humanity, especially the poorest, the weakest, the least important, those whom
Matthew lists in the final judgment on love: the hungry, the
thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick and those in prison.”
We can do no less! We are called to be missionary disciples,
proclaiming Jesus Christ through our witness through prayer,
learning, acting and giving. Using teachings from the Holy
Father, as well as prayer, music, media and dialogue, explore
what it means to be a Church that is poor and how that might
shape what parish ministry looks like in our church today.

The Rites of Purification and Enlightenment
Speaker: Rita Thiron
The Period of Purification and Enlightenment customarily
coincides with Lent. It is a time of more intense spiritual preparation and “is intended to enlighten the hearts and minds of
the elect with a deeper knowledge of Christ the Savior” (RCIA
139). How should this period be different from the period of
the Catechumenate? How do the rites of this period, particularly the Scrutinies, prepare the Elect and the entire assembly
to celebrate the paschal mystery and the sacraments of initiation? We will take a look at the ancient history of these rites,
their rich texts, and best practices for their proper celebration.

Catechist Formation: The Debt We Owe
Speaker: Carole Eipers
Catechist formation is not “something else we ask them to do,”
it is the foundation of effective catechesis and the longevity
of catechists. We will explore the why, what, when, and how
of catechist formation. Do we teach them as we want them to
teach others?

The Joyful Community: The Gift of Evangelization
from Black Catholics
Speaker: Rev. Mr. Art Miller
African American culture was formed by adversity. The only
way to survive the barbarism of slavery was by forming community, as difficult as it was. Even though slavery has ended
the sense of the need for community has not. This bonding of
and binding together creates a church that thrives and sustains
through adversity. In the Black church, community is the center
of faith, family and God. Forming community within the the
parish sustains the parish and evangelizes the entire community.

Saturday, February 6, 3:00-4:00 p.m. (en español)

El poder sanador de los sacramentos
Speaker: Rev.

Friday Evening Events
Pilgrim: Seeking the Way (featuring Tony Alonso,
Chris de Silva, and the MAC Choir)
The church is specifically described as the pilgrim
church, and for centuries it has pursued and sought
truth, life’s meaning, sacred shelter in times of difficulty, and above all, a greater understanding of God’s
presence among humankind. These quests, called pil-
2016 MID-ATLANTIC CONGRESS
grimages, can be internal or physical and have their
origins deeply rooted in biblical history and folklore.
This concept of traveling in search of the way toward a
more intimate relationship with God provides the basis of this contemplative prayer experience. Whether
you are a road-weary traveler on this journey or you
are contemplating that first step, join us for this musical journey, offering you encouragement, hope, and
strength along the way.
Tony Alonso‘s contemporary liturgical music appears in numerous compilations and hymnals, and he
has presented at liturgy, music and theology conferences throughout the world. Alonso is currently a doctoral candidate in the Graduate Division of Religion
at Emory University in Atlanta. Formerly, he served
as Director of Music for Campus Ministry at Loyola
Marymount University in Los Angeles.
Chris de Silva is a composer, arranger and recording artist with GIA Publications, and shares his gift of
music ministry at national conferences, diocesan and
parish retreats around the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. He has served at several faith communities in the Los Angeles Archdiocese and is presently
