Weekly Message
Let us encourage one another
You may have noticed that since Easter, we have been taking the first reading from the Acts
of the Apostles. Outside Easter, our first reading comes from the Old Testament readings
that point to promises that would be fulfilled in the New Testament. All of the promises
were fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Messiah who died and rose again. During Easter, we celebrate the joy of the resurrection that empowered the disciples to witness to Jesus without
fear. The Acts of the Apostles offer invaluable information about the life of the early Church
who were united in heart and soul (Acts 4:32), sharing everything in common because they
loved each other. Through their sound teaching and living, they were able to make more disciples. Many of
them were persecuted in Jerusalem, and so they fled the city and moved to other places where they continued to tell the story of their salvation. Many who heard them came to believe them.
One of those who shared his gifts and property with the disciples was Joseph, to whom the apostles gave the
name “Barnabas,” meaning “son of encouragement” (Acts 4:36). All through the Acts of the Apostles, Barnabas was true to his name, being a source of encouragement to the community. He was particularly helpful to
Paul, who was a former persecutor of Christians. After Paul’s conversion and his three years in Arabia, he
visited Jerusalem, but the disciples were afraid of him. It was Barnabas who encouraged Paul and introduced him to the community and helped him to be accepted (Acts 9:26-30). Paul and Barnabas became
great companions as they journeyed through the Roman territories to share their Christian faith with people.
In today’s first reading, Paul and Barnabas “strengthened the spirits of the disciples and exhorted them to
persevere in the faith, saying, ‘It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of
God’” (Acts 14:22). Paul received encouragement from Barnabas, and he passed it on to others. There is so
much good in encouraging other people and assisting them to bring out the best in them. How could this be
done except through love? Do you encourage other people? Or do you just wait for them to make mistakes
that will lead to their downfall?
Just like Barnabas who encouraged Paul, there are many Christians who today encourage others to be better
Christians. As I think of this, my mind goes to those who serve as a sponsor or godparents of those receiving
the sacraments of initiation. The role of a sponsor is to prompt and encourage the candidate in ways that
edify and ensure the spiritual progress of the candidate. To be a sponsor is a very serious responsibility in
the Church that requires prayer, faith and active support. I was pleased to see some of our youth who received the Sacrament of Confirmation a year or two ago now being sponsors of those who made their Confirmation two weeks ago. My prayer is that each Christian will be encouraged to fan into flame the fire of
love that Jesus has instilled in us in the sacraments so that we may support each other on our journey of
faith.
In today’s gospel, Jesus gave his disciples a new commandment to love one another. This “new commandment” of love is only new in the sense that it sets a new standard, “as I have loved you.” The love we have for
one another is to be raised to a higher standard as we compare it to the love that Jesus has for us. He laid
down his life for us out of love for us. He saved us while we were yet sinners. He forgave and made excuses
for those who persecuted and killed him. That standard is what we are called to strive for. May Christ help
us to embrace this new standard of love so that our world will be a place to receive and give mercy in love.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
This Sunday’s “Youth Jubilee” previews July’s World Youth Day in Krakow. Its theme from Matthew 5:7, “Blessed are the merciful,” echoes Pope Francis’s warning that “the practice of mercy is waning in the wider culture.” In countercultural witness,
therefore, “the time has come,” says Francis, “for the Church to take up the joyful call to mercy once more. It is time to return
to the basics and to bear the weaknesses and struggles of our brothers and sisters.” Jesus affirms the same in today’s Gospel.
“As I have loved you, so you also should love one another” (John 13:34). Francis concludes, “The Church’s very credibility is
seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love.” Jesus too asserts, “This is how all will know that you are my disciples,
if you have love for one another” (John 13:35). Thus, mercy “makes young” the Church, the world, and everyone. “Mercy is the
force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope” (Misericordiae Vultus, 10).

Word of Life
“By radiating charity and mercy to all our neighbors,
we provide those much-needed islands of mercy. Together, we stand against the wind of the throwaway culture and
brave its sea of indifference, sustained by Jesus who is, as Pope
Francis has called Him, ‘the living face of the Father's mercy.’”

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE EASTER CHURCH BANNERS
The beautiful church banners we have in the sanctuary carry the theme of
Coronation. This liturgical art has been used by many Christian churches for
centuries as part of the clergy vestments, paschal candle, funeral pall and on
many other liturgical items. We are very blessed to have a group of talented
parishioners who spent a lot of time creating these beautiful Coronation banners. We thank God for the talents they generously share to this church.
Simply put, the design symbolizes Jesus Christ as the King of Kings (Rev.
19:16), the Eternal High Priest (Heb. 6:20) and the Victor (1 Cor. 15: 57).
The Crown has traditionally been a symbol of authority and sovereignty. Head coverings, like crowns, are also seen as symbol of victory like you
would see with the wreath or garland. The Holy Scriptures refer to Jesus
Christ as the Eternal High Priest (Heb. 6:20). In the original design, two
bands of fabric called lappets hang on each side of the crown in the same
manner as those on a bishop’s miter. A priestly crown or frontlet called the
tzitz was a golden plate or tiara worn by Jewish High Priests. Like the Levitical priests, Jesus offered a sacrifice to satisfy the Law of God when He offered Himself for our sins (Heb. 7:26-27). Unlike the Levitical priests, who
had to continually offer sacrifices, Jesus only had to offer His sacrifice once,
gaining eternal redemption for all who come to God through Him (Heb. 9:12).
The coronation design is printed three times on each banner. The repetition of the pattern has no
relevance to the meaning of the design. Although the local artists’ decision to print it thrice on the
banner is based on the dimensions of the sanctuary space, which dictates the length of the banner, I
have given the three crowns on each banner a spiritual interpretation: the three-fold office of Christ,
who is Priest, Prophet and King.
A triumph of flowers, including Easter lilies, is the ideal, joyous frame to the Coronation design. The
Easter lily symbolizes hope, purity, and peace and is commonly associated with the resurrection of
Christ.
Below the crown is a plant or tree. It is not clear what kind of plant or tree it is. Several plants and
trees are used to symbolize Christianity or Christ himself. The cedar (of Lebanon), for example, is a
symbol of Christ. It is also identified with the concepts of beauty and majesty. You may also be able
to find what looks like a scepter held upright at the center part of the design which includes the trunk
of the tree. It may not be the intention of the original artist, but a scepter would certainly be appropriate in a coronation design.
As for the vase, it could be an element of the design that is of minor importance. It must suffice to
mention that anything that is added to Church art or decoration, no matter how little the significance,
especially in the antiquity, has some connection to Christian teachings and tradition. They commonly
serve to explain the development of our modern ecclesiastical utensils and adornment.
Let us continue to learn our faith through the symbols and the liturgical art around the church. May
we solemnly celebrate the great mysteries of our redemption through liturgical art and clothe the liturgy with utmost beauty.

PASTORAL COUNCIL: NOW ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS
Beginning this week and continuing through May 20th, 2016, our parish community will be nominating persons to be considered for membership on our parish’s Pastoral Council. The actual selection in a “Discernment Process” will take place
on Sunday, June 5th, 2016 at 2:00 P.M.
Why a Pastoral Council?
You’ve probably heard about Pastoral Councils. You may have wondered why Pastoral Councils have been mandated in
our archdiocese. Let’s chat briefly about the reasons for a Pastoral Council.
The Second Vatican Council gave the big push for Pastoral Councils. The bishops said that “pastors should promote the
dignity and responsibility of the laity in the Church.” They further advised “priests to listen to the laity...so that with them,
they would be able to read the signs of the times.”
What’s more, Vatican II reminded the laity that they belong to the priesthood of the faithful. By Baptism and Confirmation, the laity share in the priestly mission of Christ. They don’t need anyone’s permission to participate in the Apostolate
of the Church. They have their “go” signal right from Christ. This “go” includes the right and responsibility to participate
in the decision-making process of the Church.
What is a Pastoral Council?
There are actually three Parish Councils: the Finance Council, the Stewardship Committee, and the Pastoral Council. The
Finance Council is administrative and fiscal in scope, the Stewardship Committee focuses on the giving of Time, Talent,
and Treasure and the learning to be stewards of the gifts of God, while the Pastoral Council is the “Wisdom Community”
of the parish where the people listen to the needs of all. The primary purpose of the Pastoral Council is to be a consultative body for the Pastor.
A Pastoral Council is not a lay pressure group. It is not simply a “democratization” of the parish. Furthermore, it is not just
a new linkage of existing parish organizations. Finally, it is not the parish Finance Council or the Board of Directors of the
“Parish Corporation.”
On the positive side, the Pastoral Council is a living model of the parish as a worshipping community. Therefore, it reflects
or witnesses to the family of believers who are formed by proclaiming the Good News by celebrating the Eucharist and by
being “inspired” by the Holy Spirit. Thus, the Council members come together as workers who live the liturgy, build up
the Church, and serve the Gospel. They gather in a communion of shared responsibility in the work of the Church.
Pastoral Council members, as chief consultants to the Pastor, do not “represent a constituency” among the people as in
some “legislative or corporate models,” but rather represent the needs of all of the people of the parish. The Council
reaches out to determine what are the issues that are impacting the lives of the parishioners and then, through a process of
prayer, study, dialogue, and, most importantly, discernment and consensus, recommend practical conclusions regarding
these issues, ways in which the parish can minister to the needs of the parishioners.
The Pastor, as the delegate of the bishop, has the authority and responsibility to make decisions regarding the running of
the parish and the building-up of the faith community. The laity, by virtue of their Baptism, has the right and responsibility to participate in that decision-making process primarily through the process of consultation.
At all levels in the Church, consultation is at the heart of the decision-making process. Consultation recognizes that all the
baptized, by that fact, are called to share in the building up of the Church, each in a way proper to the person.
Thus, the Pastoral Council is the structure provided by the Church which enables all who share the responsibility for making the parish alive in Christ. This is always done with “truth, courage, and prudence and with reverence and charity […]”
towards all.

Youth Ministry News
Youth Fundraiser: Thank you for your support of our religious articles and jewelry sale earlier this month. We raised
just over $1,000.00, which will benefit scholarships and financial assistance for youth to attend summer youth events
(Archdiocesan Youth Conference and C.S.I. – Houston). If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to help
our youth, you can drop that off in the Parish Office to the attention of Carissa Bull.
“Youth Nights”: There are two fun and faith-filled youth events this week. We will have a high school “Sports
Night” on Sunday, April 24th from 6:30pm – 8:00pm in the Family Life Center. Our middle school youth will gather
for an “Open Room / Rosary Walk” in the Youth Room on Thursday, April 28th from 6:00pm – 7:30pm. Parents and
youth are invited to join our new “Remind” text message groups for timely information and updates about our high
school youth and middle school youth events (see below!).
“POWER HOUR” Adoration: Please make plans to join our next Eucharistic Adoration event on Monday, April
25th from 7:00pm – 8:00pm in the church. Fr. Felix will lead this worship experience, which is open to ALL parishioners and families… although the event is especially geared to our youth! This will be an opportunity for prayer and reflection, along with a special message and music to enhance this time of worship! We will follow the adoration with a
complimentary pizza dinner in the Family Life Center until 9:00pm.
Formation / CCE Classes: This year was truly an amazing time in the life of our parish… We had 1,053 students
participating in our Formation programming, which was a 13% increase over last year! There were also 335 students in
our sacrament preparation programs for Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation. We are only able to meet the
needs of our parish families through the generous stewardship of our adult catechists… We are already planning for
next year; if you are interested in helping with one of our 2016 – 2017 Formation programs, please contact Mike Smith
at (281) 446-2933.
Eucharist Preparation Classes: If you need to be re-interviewed for First Communion, please contact the Formation
Office as soon as possible. Your blue sacrament book should be completed, so be sure to bring it with you to the makeup interview!
2016- 2017 Formation / CCE Registration: Our second “early registration” event for next year’s formation and sacrament preparation classes is scheduled for Saturday, May 7th from 2:00pm – 5:00pm in the Family Life Center. The
third (and final) “early registration” date is Saturday, June 4th from 2:00pm – 5:00pm in the FLC. There will also be a
“late registration event” in August; however, space is very limited at that time… Please DO NOT WAIT until August.
Please note these will be the only opportunities to register for classes. Payment in full is expected at the time of registration; however, no one will be turned away due to an inability to pay… All you need to do is talk to Fr. Felix, and he can
approve a tuition waiver.
Summer Study CCE: Our two-week summer intensive program is scheduled for the last two weeks of June: Monday,
June 20th – Friday, June 24th (6:30pm – 9:00pm) and Monday, June 27th – Friday, July 1st (6:30pm – 9:00pm).
“Summer Study” is open to all incoming students, Kindergarten through High School. If you are interested in helping
teach one of the elementary, middle school, and high school classes, please contact Mike Smith or Carissa Bull for more
information about serving as a catechist. We are required to have at least two adults in each class, and free training is
provided! You do not have to be a professional teacher to be a catechist. All that is needed is a heart for young people
and a desire to share the faith God has already put in your heart.

Year of Mercy: The Seven Corporal Works of Mercy
Visit the Imprisoned
Ivana T. Meshell, Director of Adult Faith Formation
This week we look at the sixth Corporal Work of Mercy: Visit the Imprisoned. Some
people think of the incarcerated as a lifeform not worthy of any sort of respect. We
must remember that God loves all people and desires their eternal salvation, including those who have made poor choices and committed heinous crimes. God’s mercy
extends even to those who have not earned it and do not deserve it. This does not
mean that people should not suffer punishment nor that they should not be held accountable for
their actions. It means that they are people first, and no matter what they have done, they still retain
the original human dignity that God has placed in each one of us. While in the United States last
year, Pope Francis visited Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility in Philadelphia and greeted the inmates. During his Holy Thursday homily this year, Pope Francis addressed the prisoners, saying:
"Jesus loves us, without limits, always, until the end. The love of God for us doesn't have limits. He
never tires of loving anyone." God’s attitude toward us is to call us to repentance and change. Christians are to offer hope both to perpetrators of violence and crime and to their victims.
CBS News did a story on “60 Minutes” entitled The Incarceration Nation. They described the incarceration rate in the United States of America as the highest in the world. While Americans represent
about 5 percent of the world’s population, nearly one-quarter of the entire world’s inmates have
been incarcerated in the United States in recent years. Imprisonment of America’s 2.3 million prisoners costs taxpayers more than $63 billion a year. Within three years of being released, 67% of exprisoners re-offend and 52% are re-incarcerated, according to a study published in 1994. The rate of
recidivism is so high in the United States that most inmates who enter the system are likely to reenter within a year of their release. Part of the reason for this high incarceration rate is that fact that
Americans view imprisonment as a form of punishment. In countries where a serious effort at rehabilitation is made (such as in modern-day Germany), there are far more success stories than tragedies.
The imprisoned are not throwaway people, and it is a great sin of society when we lock people up
and forget about them, ignoring their plight and not doing what we can to have a good system of
both punishment and reformation. Pope Francis realizes this state of mind and takes care not to forget these men and women who are so often neglected. He reminds us that they have souls, too,
and deserve our time and attention. For a time, I worked on staff at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic
Church, where there was a great emphasis on prison ministry due to the fact that St. Maximilian
died in a Nazi prison camp in World War II. Not everyone can do this kind of ministry; yet, along with
hospital ministry, prison ministry is by far one of the greatest needs in our archdiocese. We don’t
have enough priests, deacons and laypersons to minister to our Catholics in prison, let alone offering faith and hope to those who are not Catholic. Part of the reason many people end up in prison in
the first place is because they are caught in a cycle of poverty, ignorance, and hopelessness. Our
archdiocese's Office of Correctional Ministries provides pastoral services to those in prisons and
jails and to their families. We also reach out to the victims of crime and violence, as well as the families of law enforcement personnel. Crime and violence touch the entire Body of Christ in one way or
another. Correctional Ministries seeks to bring Christ's healing to everyone affected.
If you have ever been personally affected by crime, we pray that you will find peace and reconciliation through this ministry. Learn more by contacting Fr. Ron Cloutier, Director, Houston Office of
Correctional Ministries, Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston; 2403 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, Texas,
77021; (713) 741-8732; www.archgh.org/Correctional-Ministries. Please pray for those imprisoned,
advocate for better treatment, and visit if you are able. It is a corporal work of mercy.

¿Animas tú a otras personas?
